Applesript finding phantom photos in iPhoto

I am trying to build an AppleScript based app for analysing iPhoto Libraries and have fallen on the following difficulty with the following simple script
tell application "iPhoto"
set all_pictures to every photo
end tell
Run against a test library containing 6 events and 257 photos, returns 14 events and 416 photos.
Now the test library was obtained by massively deleting (in iPhoto) from a large (4000 photo) library.
- The trash has been emptied,
- All possible <command-option> rebuilts have been done
- the "Originals" folder in the test library has 435 photos in 26 subfolders
So 2 questions
- why is there such a discrepancy between what iPhoto shows and what it stores?
- why is there a 3-way discrepancy between info displayed in iPhoto, given by Finder and returned by Applescript?

Thank you for this interesting suggestion. Unfortunately I have encountered two difficulties while carrying it out:
1) dragging 'the folders' is proposed. Now these folders are buried inside the iPhoto library, and not readily accessed although they can be found by using 'view the contents of the package' on the library folder. Once dragged I notice that (predictably) all modified images, keywords, albums, folders slide shows and so on are lost. This is a bit too radical for my purposes since I value the work put into transforming a bunch of photos off the camera into an organised collection.
2) my workflow involves
a) duplicating the complete Libray when it reaches a DVD's worth,
b) that up and keeping the duplicate as an on-line archive and then
c) trimming the loriginal library to keep the last month or so of pictures for ongoing work. In this way the keywords are allways available as well as all other added value to the Library.
The suggested method does not work with this.
I now have 15 iphoto 'archive' libraries and I wanted to perform a full inventory at album level (# of photos, time period). Hence the applescript mentioned in the first post. So the question remains: why is the - apparently deleted - stuff still lying around in ALL the libraries?
Sorry if long-winded but it is a simple problem leading to many complications

  • How can I find double photos in iPhoto'11?

Hey, how can I find double photos in iPhoto'11? Only know that it displays doublets when I use the import function in iPhoto'11.
    Thanks

Thanks for the answer.  After I posted this question, I saw there were other discussions.  I do see everything is there, but it is time comsuming to view each individual picture to make sure I put it in the right catagory!!
I did send feedback to apple,  but I see people have been asking them to fix this problem for the last 7 months or so, and it is still not fixed.....so what is good about the new version!!?

  • I can't find my photoes in iPhoto application.

i cant find my photoes in iphoto...

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Cant find iPhone photos in iPhoto

I'm not able to find the photos that are on my iPhone in iPhoto. When the device is connected to the Mac, I can see the photos on the phone only. Please can you advise?

Photos in the camera roll are "imported" to the computer from the iPhone, they are not really synced. On the Mac, you would use iPhoto to transfer the pictures to the computer.
Pictures that you have on the computer would be the ones that you would sync to the iPhone using iTunes. Photos are placed in a folder on the computer, that folder is selected in iTunes and then you do a sync. When that is done, the pictures are copied to the iPhone. Then, any changes that you make to the folder on the computer will be changed on the iPhone during the next sync process.
Anything that is significantly different for a Mac can be explained by Allan, since he is a Mac, I'm a PC

  • Cannot find deleted photos from iPhoto in time machine!

Help wanted, I am unable to recover lost photos from iPhoto in Time machine.

  • Finding imported photos in iphoto 2

this past march, i created a new library on my external lacie for my photos in iphoto - to free up some space on my machine. since march there were many times when the lacie wasn't connected to the powerbook but i was still able to import my photos from my camera onto iphoto. i never really checked where they were being imported or stored. today i wanted to make take those imports and put them on the lacie so they wouldn't take up room on my hd - the library manager showed the library was located in /volumes/lacie disk/iphoto library. so thought i should start from scratch and create a new library on the manager to include those photos from the hd with the ones in the library of the lacie.
i deleted the library in the manager and chose it again from the lacie- this time it said 'album datafile for this library could not be found' and all of the pics from the library were gone. i got the pics back by importing them all again from the library on the lacie but they didn't include the last imports that had happened when the lacie was not connected (march until now- about 300 photos)
i tried to rebuild the library and got doubles of everything, but still no recent imports
i have tried to search for some of the specific pic numbers of all those in the finder as well as spotlight but to no avail. have i lost them forever? are they stored somewhere i just can't get to? if someone can help i would be so grateful.

iPhoto Library Manager is a third-party application that's used for convenient access to multiple iPhoto library folders, once you've added them to its catalog. It does not automatically scan for candidates and your description sounds like you didn't have it managing all of your various photo libraries. Removing a library from that catalog does not delete the library from your hard drive, and rebuilding an iPhoto Library folder doesn't automatically add it to the list of managed libraries. Your description makes no mention of an iPhoto malfunction, so I'm not sure that your rebuild was necessary.
The library you rebuilt was the original default iPhoto Library folder (in your Pictures folder). Is that the one you had intended to rebuild? One normally would rebuild a corrupt photo database. If your problem is that you downloaded photos unintentionally to the wrong photo collection, then no database rebuild can correct that. You'll have to export images from one, import them into the other, then delete the photos that were successfully exported.
If the rebuilt library contains the same images as the original, then move one or the other to the trash to regain the disk space.

  • Where oh where do I find my photos in iPhoto 5?

I poke around and I get a bunch of folders with years on them. A click of a particular year only yields a few photos. They've got to be somewhere, right?
I need to know because I want to FTP them from my Mac to my PowerBook.
    Thanks.

Select the photos in iPhoto and export them to a desktop folder (file menu ==> export) and FTP from there

  • How do I find duplicate photos in iPhoto

I have so many duplicates in iPhoto that my library files is way too large by thousands of photos. I need to find a way to weed out duplicate photos. Anyone know how?
    Thanks,
    Barb

Where are you seeing these duplicates?  If you're seeing them from withing the iPhoto window then you can use one of the apps listed below.
If you're seeing those "duplicate" files via the Finder then you don't have duplicates.  iPhoto will have a minimum of 2 files in it's lbrary for each file imported.  So don't relay on what you see via the Finder regarding duplicates in the iPhoto library.
    T
hese applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only duplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the most versatile and best all around iPhoto utility to have.

  • How can I find sent photos from IPHoto?

There doesn't seem to be a way to see what photos I sent to whom on IPhoto. I sent a photo today to someone but I can't find it anywhere. This is not a good thing.  Does anyone know how to find these emails that were sent? Thanks.

iPhoto is not an email client and the mail feature is a handy way to send a snap to Grandma rather than a replacement for an email app. It does not have an outbox, for instance. You can opt to bcc yourself on photos though or simply use an email client.

  • Tip for Finding Lost Photos from iPhoto

Wow, what a surprise.  After rebuilding my library and still not finding my lost photos, I installed Picasa for Mac, and voila, it found every photo on my hard drive I'd ever done and in warp speed!  I couldn't believe it, I had just about given up!  It was easy then to transfer them to iPhoto which I am much more familiar with for editing and emailing.

    Bonnie,
thanks for your answer here about picasa which I have downloaded and watching all my images flash by.  And I think I am through with iphoto.  The hours I have spent every time it decides not to open and even all the hints here about rebuilding etc.  nothing was useful or it was for one or two times.  I'll just have to get used to picasa.  I am sure the time will be better spent there than hours lost like today.  I wanted to add pictures to a pages document only to find iphoto library empty and the one I had copied stopped at 2010.  I am a photographer so you know I've done lots since 2010.  You are a lifesaver.  Much gratitude for you.

  • Is there a way to find duplicate photos in iPhoto?

I'm sure I have plenty but not sure if this application or some other can accomplish this.

  • I saved photo into iPhoto slideshow, but now I can't find it.  I wanted to open it in iPhoto so I could edit the photo and make it lighter.  How can I find the photos I saved into iPhoto slideshow?

I need advise about saving photos into iPhoto.  When I chose to save a photo, I chose it to be saved into iPhoto slideshow because that's the only choice I had that mentioned iPhoto.  Now I can't find the photo in iPhoto.  What did I do wrong?

  • How do I find my photos that are stored in iphoto on my mac?

How do I find my photos that are stored in iphoto on my mac?  I don't want to access them through iphoto, I want to access them individually.  I have always done it previously through searching for the img number.  But it no longer works!

That's half-correct. Direct access is supported.
Find the photo in iPhoto, then go to the "File" menu and click "Reveal in Finder" - it takes you directly to the image file. Or right-click on the photo, and choose "Edit in External Editor" which opens the original file in other software, like Photoshop, if you have it.
And it's dangerous to move, rename or delete the original file or folders after you found it, but safe to do other things.

  • Where do I find my photos on the time capsule?

I use an Airport Time Capsule and now I want to go back and find some photos in iPhoto-library but I can't find them?

If you are asking about Time Machine backups, it is not possible to "browse" individual photos in the backed up library if you are using the Lion operating sysem or later.
All that you can do is restore the entire library, then go hunting for the photos that you want.
When you choose to restore the library, you will have the option to replace your current library with the library in the backups, or restore as a separate library.
