Applet development problem

hi...this is my first post in this forum....
my problem is very strange...im a newbie at applet development.....when i wrote the following program:
import java.applet.*;
import java.awt.*;
public class Display extends Applet
Image img1;
Image img2;
public void init()
img1=getImage(getCodeBase(),"Images/Duke.gif");
img2=getImage(getCodeBase(),"Images/Sctonly2.gif");
public void paint(Graphics grph)
grph.drawImage(img1,10,20,this);
grph.drawImage(img2,10,20,this);
now on compiling this program, the compiler gives the following error...
illegal start of expression: public void init()
im completely stumped....why is it giving this error and what to do to correct this.
thank you

Remove the { before the method declaration public void init(){}
and a } after grph.drawImage() method call.

    Applet running problem in ie 6.0 under Windows XP
    I have a PC running Iternet Explorer 6.0 running under Windows XP. I have developed an applet using JDK 1.3 which is running fine with applet viewer , but it is not running in ie. I have installed Netscape navigator and Opera 5. the applet is running fine in both of these browsers but somehow it is not running in IE.
    Later on I upgraded my JDK to 1.4. It also displays use Java2 (V1.4.1) for <applet> (requires restart) tck marked in Advance section under Tools-Options menu of IE.
    I have also tried and set various options in my Control Panels Java Plug-in but all in vain. I have searched the sites for this solution but no one answers specifically.
    I know its a small problem due to discarded JVM in IE under Windows XP but give me solution for that.
    Thanks in Advance

  • Applet repaint problem

    Hi
    I have problem with repainting. I add components to panel, then in action listener remove them and add a different component. After that the panel is empty, but when I resize the applet, the component appears.
    Do you have any ideas what's wrong?

  • Applet socket problem in client-server, urgent!

    Dear All:
    I have implemented a client server teamwork environment. I have managered to get the server running fine. The server is responsible for passing messages between clients and accessing Oracle database using JDBC. The client is a Java Applet. The code is like the following. The problem is when I try to register the client, the socket connection get java.security.AccessControlException: access denied(java.net.SocketPermission mugca.its.monash.edu.
    au resolve)
    However, I have written a Java application with the same socket connection method to connect to the same server, it connects to the server without any problem. Is it because of the applet security problem? How should I solve it? Very appreciate for any ideas.
    public class User extends java.applet.Applet implements ActionListener, ItemListener
    public void init()
    Authentication auth = new Authentication((Frame)anchorpoint);
    if(auth.getConnectionStreams() != null) {
    ConnectionStreams server_conn = auth.getConnectionStreams();
    // Authenticates the user and establishes a connection to the server
    class Authentication extends Dialog implements ActionListener, KeyListener {
    // Object holding information relevant to the server connection
    ConnectionStreams server_conn;
    final static int port = 6012;
    // Authenticates the user and establishes connection to the server
    public Authentication(Frame parent) {
    // call the class Dialog's constructor
    super(parent, "User Authentication", true);
    setLocation(parent.getSize().width/3, parent.getSize().height/2);
    setupDialog();
    // sets up the components of the dialog box
    private void setupDialog() {
    // create and set the layout manager
    //Create a username text field here
    //Create a password text field here
    //Create a OK button here
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
    authenticateUser();
    dispose();
    // returns the ConnectionStreams object
    public ConnectionStreams getConnectionStreams() {
    return(server_conn);
    // authenticates the user
    private void authenticateUser() {
    Socket socket;
    InetAddress address;
    try {
    // open socket to server
    System.out.println("Ready to connect to server on: " + port);
    socket = new Socket("mugca.its.monash.edu.au", port);
    address = socket.getInetAddress();
    System.out.println("The hostname,address,hostaddress,localhost is:" + address.getHostName() + ";\n" +
    address.getAddress() + ";\n" +
    address.getHostAddress() + ";\n" +
    address.getLocalHost());
    catch(Exception e) {
    displayMessage("Error occured. See console");
    System.err.println(e);
                                  e.printStackTrace();
    }

    Hi, there:
    Thanks for the help. But I don't have to configure the security policy. Instead, inspired by a message in this forum, I simply upload the applet to the HTTP server (mugca.its.monash.edu.au) where my won server is running. Then the applet is download from the server and running fine in my local machine.

  • Re: Development problems

    I've seen this sort of behaviour on two occasions.
    The first is when the partition being started does not have enough memory
    and rather than complain as you would normally expect simply grinds to a
    halt. Its worth checking the ftexec and node manager log files to see if
    this is the case.
    The second is when an ftexec process is being started for the first time
    and the node upon which it is starting is very busy. Every now and then
    the partition workshop will sit there with the ftexec pending with no
    discernable activity going on. In this case I would normally expect an
    exception after about 10-15 minutes. If I then attempt to re-run the
    application everything is normally fine.
    We are currently running Forte 3.0.G.2 and we use sequent symmetry boxes
    for our server.
    One other thing worth checking is whether it is the machine causing the
    problem, or, the workspace you are running from. We have had some
    interesting problems with a single workspace in a repository getting
    completely confused, which, when integrated wipes out all the other
    workspaces in the repository as they are updated.
    Good luck.

    We recently started having problems running one of our applications fromthe
    partition workshop in development, but it ONLY seems to be on one persons
    machine. When running the application from this particular machine, it
    appears to start running, but then just sort of goes off into lala land &
    never dies or raises an exception or any sort of error. If we bring upthe
    NT task manager, the ftexec seems to be getting cpu time for awhile, but
    then it just stops getting cycles??
    I had him create a new workspace(I was able to run the application on my
    machine from his old workspace) which didn't matter. Other developers can
    run the same application from their machines too?? We have NT 4.0 clients
    running Forte 3.0.J.1 & a the rpserver is running on Digital Unix 4.0.D.Any
    ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks!

    Douglas,
    I concur with Len. Try trc:os:1:1 and 5:5. I suspect that it's a
    memory problem, especially if the same workspace works on other
    machines.
    Len,
    Boy, once you became an internationally recognized FORTE consultant, I

    I suggest you turn on some extra logging and collect dayta while itruns. Some
    likely symptoms are missing files or memory problems.

  • Looking for proper SIM card for applet development

    Hi,
    I would like to develop some applet on the SIM card. And does anyone know where I can get the proper SIM card?
    I have a bit search for test SIM card and blank SIM card, but I am not sure which one can be used for applet development. It seems that Gemalto provides some development suit that includes some sample cards. But the suit is too expensive and maybe I don't need the tools they provide. I don't want to buy the wrong one, so it would be very helpful if any of you has some provider information or links!!
    Thanks in advance!!

    maybe I don't need the tools they provide. You do as you will need a tool to install your applet on the SIM card
    I don't want to buy the wrong one, so it would be very helpful if any of you has some provider information or links!!Are you just want to write applications or wanna be able to install them too on real cards ? If the purpose is just writing of apps then oracle and ETSI have provided everything, you don't need to buy any additional tool. But yes for dubuging you will need some third party tool or write your own one : -)

  • Applet Flash problem

    I have an applet and a flash in two frames in a HTML page. The applet and the falsh app communicate through the Javascript code with in the HTML pages. The flash app does not work as it is supposed to when the applet is present in the Parent HTML page. When I removed the applet, the flash app seems to work ok. But the applcation that I am working needs both of them together. Plz suggest me a solution if you know of any flash and applet related problems.

  • Need help with applet related problems

    First of all hello to everyone. I'm new to this forum. I usually can solve my problems google-ing around, but this time I just ran out of ideas.
    I'm trying to develop a jni applet that can run native code for performance. I used netbeans so far and the applet works great when run from within the ide. At some point a managed to make the applet run inside firefox and iexplore, however somehow i screwed something up and now i can't make it run anymore. I don't really know what i did but i think it may be related to these lines in the console since everything up until awt works fine in the applet:
    basic: JNLP2ClassLoader.findLibrary: Looking up native library: jawt.dll
    network: Looking up native library in: C:\Users\Gladiator\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\10\1082924a-7851bf5e-n\jawt.dll
    basic: Native library jawt.dll not found
    Ofc i may be wrong.
    This also my be a local problem because a friend of mine tried the applet himself and said it's working.
    All the jars are selfsigned.
    below i posted the console output in case you want to take a look. Also I am interested about the "try again.." messages that seem to pop over and over again.

    I am sorry for bold, i came here to ask for help. I used bold to differentiate output from my questions since i couldn't find tags.
    I already validated jnlp using JaNeLA and got only optimization suggestions.
    As I said in first post, this works for a friend of mine, so it's possible a local issue with my java or something ...
    Also i reinstalled jre/jdk 7.0, then uninstalled and installed latest jre/jdk 6.
    Hope I didn't leave a bad impression, i just want help.

  • [APPLET][Heritage] Problem with classes

    Hi, I'm developping a simple JAVA Applet and I have a problem
    I have a class called LUIweb which is the main class. Here is a part of it.
    public class LUIweb extends JApplet implements Runnable {
    public void run() {
    DisplayMessage("JAVA rocks");
    public void DisplayMessage(String message){
    jtextArea.append(message);
    middlePanel.removeAll();
    middlePanel.add(textScrollPane, BorderLayout.CENTER);
    middlePanel.validate();
    middlePanel.repaint();
    It displays the message "JAVA rocks" in my JTextArea. But when another class from the same package calls DisplayMessage, nothing is displayed in my JTextArea
    public class Data_net extends LUIweb{
    public void Test(){
    DisplayMessage("NON");
    Have you got any idea to fix that?
    Thank you for you help

    OK,
    You are using a separate thread to update the gui. As swing is not multithread safe, this is not good. Anytime you want to change the gui, you must do it on the gui thread. This means without extra help, you should only change the gui from within a Listener, such as a MouseListener, KeyListener, etc, etc.
    In your case, you are updating the not from the gui thread (not from a Listener), and so you must ask the gui thread to do the work for you when it has time.
    This means you need to use SwingUtilities.invokeLater or SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait.
    Since the sequencing is important to you in your code, you should probably use invokeAndWait, such as
    public void run()
              SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait( new Runnable()
                     public void run() { DisplayMessage(Language.CONNECT_DB); }
              Data_net Donnee_net=new Data_net();
              SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait( new Runnable()
                     public void run() { DisplayMessage("Connecting to "+Donnee_net.GetHost()+
                                                       " with user "+Donnee_net.GetUser()+"...\n");
              Donnee_net.Test();

  • Applet development in Internet Explorer Vs AppletViewer

    hello, i have build rmi chatting applet.
    when i test my applet with appletviewer, it work finely
    but when i try it in internet explorer 6 it can do properly
    like in appletviewer. what's wrong with it?
    for information, i build my applet with jbuilder 5 and i have
    setting my html file so ie6 can recognize my applet with <object>
    </object> tag. what's problem exactly with my development?

    If you look in the Plug-in console (right click on the icon on your task bar in Windows) you will probably see that you have a Security Exception because unsigned applets are not allowed to connect to other hosts.
    Solutions
    1. buy a certificate and sign the applet
    2. for testing, use PolicyTool to grant the required SocketPermission(s)
    Search the archives for details of how to do either.

    Matthew

  • APPLET DELETION PROBLEM: CARD TERMIN AL ERROR

    Hello.
    I have developed several on-card packages. First is the library package (package1), containing no applets. And the other package (package2) contains serverApllet that uses libraries from the package1. The strange problem occurs during the deletion of the serverApplet package2. It has to be deleted first, only then a library package1 can be deleted.
    I've implemented uninstall() method of the serverApplet, that sets all references to the library instances to null and requests Objects deletion. The problem is:
    that after calling:
    delete -r |package2  //i.e. server package deletionJCOP Shell always returns JCException:
    jcshell: Error code: -6 (Card Terminal error)
    jcshell:Communication problems: nullIt allways happens, when I am deleting package2. After i connect to the same simulation session, there is no more serverApllet package2, i.e. it was deleted. Then a library package1 can be successfully deleted.
    Could anyone tell me what might be the reason of such an error?
    Now i am trying the deletion only in simulator. I am not sure in trying it on-card, because i am not sure that i will be able to delte it from the card.
    Thanks for a help,
    Best regards,
    Eve

    Yes, your advice was very useful for me. I had to read JCVM and JCRE specification
    one time more. And i found out that certainly to make applet and its package deletable:
    1 .no references to static memory can remain (i.e. must be set to null);
    2. in case the shareable interface is used, we must have in mind that no references to server SIO objects must remain. Regarding this second sentence i have to poin, that i found out the example in Java Card Kit v2.2.2 with A, B and C applets using shareable interfaces and static references.
    I hope this might help people, who might koin the same problem.
    Thanks, lexdabear.
    Best regards,

  • Applet display problem

    Dear Sir/Madem,
         I have developed an applet which renders vector drawings from DXF format file. My applet is working fine in appletviewer as well as in Internet Explorer 5 when accessed locally. But when I try to access it from Webserver, just JApplet's GUI appears on the screen. It doesn't render drawing. It also doesn't show icons images of JButtons.
    My applet is accessing my drawing files and icon files for button,(both are on server) properly.
         I have useed jdk1.3.0, java2D API, JApplet ,JPanel as main
    drawing render area.
         Currently the applet resides at following address.
    http://www.samvid.com/WebCadViewer/ViewerDemo.html
         I have to fix the problem urgently.
         I appreciate your help / suggestion.

    are you sure about the image loading ?
    you should use something like that:
    (new ImageIcon(getClass().getClassLoader().getResource("image pathname"))).getImage()

  • Applet Image problem

    Alrighty Ive made a splash screen for my game in .JPG format. Which is fine and works with java. I have it loaded in an applet and compiling it works fine.
    The problem is that when I run the Applet(HTML file) the splash screen dosent get displayed. The code for the image is written insde a class (code is fine because when I compile it , it works perfectly), the reason is mostly because its easier to organize. I tried drawing the image inside the actuall apply code and this works at run time as well as on browser.
    So I need your help to get it working on browser!
    Class code :
    Image splash = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit ().getImage ("Images/splash.jpg");
    g.drawImage (splash, 0, 0, null);
    This is basicly in a draw method wich gets called by the applet.
    Thanks!

    See if these references help.
    Check chapter 28 of the Plugin Developer's Guide for splash screen info. Here's the doc for Java 1.4 (1.5 doc is slightly different):

  • Applet font problem between linux and windows

    I just want to share my experience in several project i've taken part.
    In some projects, where all are developed under linux environment (suse 9.2),
    we use jasper report for report generation and use the web applet for our clients to print.
    They print ok in linux env, with the netscape 7.1, courier 10 font and jvm 1.4.2_06b version.
    But when accessed from windows env, with the same browser and the same jvm version, the applet and the print out are different from those of lin env. The headers and footers are missing. When the we edit/lower the header and footer size at the jasper report file, then they appears @ the window env.
    So strange that the font handling between win and lin differ (still my assumption). I'vent been able to solve this problem totally since the client must stick with one OS else the print out will be different.
    Quite dissatisfied, coz i really think i could code once the report and run it anywhere in the applet and behaves in the same way.
    Could anybody help ? T-T
    Regards,
    Albert Gan

  • Opening and closing a frame from an applet security problem

    can I open a frame or a window from an applet and close the frame by using
    System.exit(0) for the frame or will it throw a security problem.

    I am using system.exit(0) to exit the JVM.
    dispose()
    Releases all of the native screen resources used by this Window, its subcomponents, and all of its owned children. That is, the resources for these Components will be destroyed, any memory they consume will be returned to the OS, and they will be marked as undisplayable.
    If this frame have to be close and open again don't use dispose.
    there is no check whether a frame is active? what you can do is set the the new frame to null (frame = null) and also when you dispose it, this will let you know if the frame is active or not.
