Applet in a Tomcat and Tapestry web application

hope this is the right forum...
My problem is that I have an applet (as a jar file) which needs to have access to other jar files. My relevant project structure looks like this:
context
|--res
...|--applets
|--WEB-INF
...|--lib
So the jars the applet needs access to are stored in the lib folder of WEB-INF. Somewhere I read that this is the only location for jars needed Server Side, is this correct? I know that WEB-INF is not accessable for the Applet (Client Side) and thats the problem... But I also don't want to dublicate the needed jar files.
I think this is a general problem when developing webapps (with applets) using Tomcat, so is there a common way to handle this?
Thanks for helping...

I already found a solution. For everyone who has the same problem, i used the ant builder to make a jar file of my applet. In the ant builder property file you can specify other jars to be "unzipped" and included in the applet jar (attribute: zipgroupfileset)

  • What's the difference between a web site and a web application?

    I'm stumped trying to come up to a difference between a web site and a web application for myself. As I see it, a web site points to a specific page and a web application is more of some sort of 'portal' to content and information.
    But where I'm stuck is that a web application is still viewed through a browser (is it not?) and a web site can still view content dynamically, making the line between web site and application prety gray.
    For instance, does a web site using ASP.NET or AJAX (I assume ASP.NET is AJAX's proprietary sibling, if not, ignore ASP.NET AND concentrate on the AJAX), becomes a web application because it can retrieve data dynamically and asynchronously or would a website
    using PHP and a CMS be more of a web application because it forms the pages on request, based on the request of the client and its content in its databse?
    Or maybe I'm totally wrong here - what differenciates between a web application and a website?

    This is totally personal and subjective, but I'd say that a website is defined by its content, while a webapplication is
    defined by its interaction with the user. That is, a website can plausibly consist of a static content repository that's dealt out to all visitors, while a web application depends on interaction and requires programmatic user input and data processing.
    For example, a news site would be a "website", but a spreadsheet or a collaborative calendar would be web "applications". The news site shows essentially the same information to all visitors, while the calendar processes individual data.
    Practically, most websites with quickly changing content will also rely on a sophisticated programmatic (and/or database) backend, but at least in principle they're only defined by their output. The web application on the other hand is essentially a program that
    runs remotely, and it depends fundamentally on a processing and a data storage backend.

    There is no real "difference". Web site is a more anachronistic term that exists from the early days of
    the internet where the notion of a dynamic application that can respond to user input was much more limited and much less common. Commercial websites started out largely as interactive brochures (with the notable exception of hotel/airline reservation sites).
    Over time their functionality (and the supporting technologies) became more and more responsive and the line between an application that you install on your computer and one that exists in the cloud became more and more blurred.
    If you're just looking to express yourself clearly when speaking about what you're building, I would continue to describe something that is an interactive brochure or business card as a "web site" and something that actually *does something that feels
    more like an application as a web app.
    The most basic distinction would be if a website has a supporting database that stores user data and modifies what the user sees based on some user specified criteria, then it's probably an app of some sort (although I would be reluctant to describe Amazon.com
    as a web app, even though it has a lot of very user-specific functionality). If, on the other hand, it is mostly static .html files that link to one another, I would call that a web site.
    Most often, these days, a web app will have a large portion of its functionality written in something that runs on the client (doing much of the processing in either javascript or actionscript, depending on how its implemented) and reaches back through some
    http process to the server for supporting data. The user doesn't move from page to page as much and experiences whatever they're going to experience on a single "page" that creates the app experience for them.

  • Netweaver administration and SAP Web Application Server r the same?

    Hi All,
    I am a Basis Consultant & new to Netweaver,..
    I am interested in Netweaver administration..
    1.I am confused wheather netweaver administration and SAP Web Application Server r the same?(or WAS is just another component of Netweaver).
    2.Do we need to administrate all the components of Netweaver(EP,BI,etc.,)seperately as an Netweaver Administrator?
    Thanks in Advance ,
    Malti

    Hi Malti,
    You must first download and read this document and then read 'help.sap.com' for what is netweaver.
    <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/e1515a37-0301-0010-b2bb-99780cb4cafa">Introduction to Web Application Server</a>
    The above mentioned document is a crisp guide to what is WAS.
    Further I got this from the sdn/netweaver webpage
    SAP NetWeaver is a web-based, open integration and application platform that serves as the foundation for enterprise service-oriented architecture (enterprise SOA) and allows the integration and alignment of people, information, and business processes across business and technology boundaries. It utilizes open standards to enable integration with information and applications from almost any source or technology. SAP NetWeaver is the foundation of SAP xApps and mySAP Business Suite solutions, and also powers partner solutions and customer custom-built applications.

  • One IDP and multiple web applications

    Continuing to look at the configuration necessary to enable SAML on my 2013 farm, I have two web apps which i would like to have SAML running on, both leveraging the same 3rd party IDP for authentication. As I dug into the various stages of configuration
    there is a part that establishes the SharePoint site realm identifier...researching what this is for, i found an article by Steve Peschka (http://blogs.technet.com/b/speschka/archive/2010/04/27/how-to-create-multiple-claims-auth-web-apps-in-a-single-sharepoint-2010-farm.aspx)
    in it he talks about if you have one IDP but multiple web apps that must use that IDP.
    Am i correct in understanding that when steve mentioned "You can only associate a token-signing certificate from an STS with one SPTrustedIdentityTokenIssuer." That the TS cert I import from my IDP is unique and is only able to be linked to one
    Web Application...unless i create a URI that makes Sharepoint aware of the additional web app?
    Going further...I can't just import another copy of the TS cert and set it to another name unique from the first one?, once this is done i could then create a new unique realm for that additional web app with that other cert. Then when configuring the web
    apps it would list two IDP's for me to choose from and i would assign them individually to on or the other.
    His article covered 2010 not sure how 2013 works with this stuff...new territory for me here so forgive my lack of knowledge on how this all comes together.
    Also, is there some sort of configuration necessary for Office web apps farm to work with SAML or is that handled through S2S communication and is beyond SAML?

    Right, so your IDP will have a single certificate which will be single-instanced on the SharePoint farm. Steve's article is accurate for SharePoint 2013 and I've used this method with ADFS. It should be no different, on the SharePoint side, with other IDPs.
    WAC is beyond SAML. The S2S/JWTs take care of it.

    Hello Friends
    I have created a site using project web database. But when i try to edit anything and trying to open in access, access asks me ot enter username and password. and when i done with that, error message says "Microsoft access could not open webapplication
    http://myserver/Projects. please verify that the server is available"
    but server is already available and this is the reason i can access myserver.
    please help me to resolve thi issue..
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello there,
    Did you get your issue fixed?
    I just encountered the same issue as above. Using SharePoint2013+SQL2012 though. It works before but all of a sudden, I start receiving this error :(
    There is another site that I published as a test still works for me though.
    Aside from the error message above, I also receive "The record source 'Projects' specified on this form or report does not exist.".
    Any clue would be appreciated.

  • Oracle Portal and EJB Web application

    Hi,
    Can anyone tell me how to make portlets in Oracle Portal from the jsp files which are a part of EJB application ?
    Problem here is OC4J is accessed behind Apache so the provider testing url(eg http://localhost/servlet/xxxx) gives page not found error.So portlets cannot be made.
    Hope somebody has some solution on this.
    Regards,
    Mandar.

    Hi Christopher,
    I am trying to do the same as you have said,I am trying to access the EJB from JSP's that run on JServ.However I am getting this error when I try to use RMI
    com.evermind.server.rmi.OrionRemoteException: Invocation error: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.crm.Dao.Customer.CustomerDataHome; nested exception is: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.crm.Dao.Customer.CustomerDataHome
    But the same code runs fine if run the jsp from Orion server.
    My code in jsp -
    Properties env = new Properties();
    env.put("java.naming.provider.url","ormi://localhost/autoglobal");
    env.put("java.naming.factory.initial","com.evermind.server.rmi.RMIInitialContextFactory");
    // env.put("java.naming.factory.initial","com.evermind.server.ApplicationClientInitialContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL,"admin");
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS,"j2ee");
    InitialContext ictx_t = new InitialContext(env);
    CustHom = (CustomerDataHome)ictx_t .lookup("CustomerData");
    CustRem =CustHom.create();
    The above error is when I am using com.evermind.server.rmi.RMIInitialContextFactory .
    If I use com.evermind.server.ApplicationClientInitialContextFactory I get the following error
    javax.naming.NamingException: Error reading application-client descriptor: No location specified and no suitable instance of the type 'com.crm.Dao.Customer.CustomerData' found for the ejb-ref CustomerData
    Hope to get some solution on this.

  • Accessing web application JAR files from applet

    I've got an applet which is part of a web application.
    All the web application JARs are in the webapps/myappl/WEB-INF/lib directory, and I
    can't seem to place anything in that directory on the archive attribute of <OBJECT> tag.
    I'm running into trouble because I'm sending objects from the servlet to the applet and keep getting classnot found during deserialization because I've missed some jar file on the archive attribute. I've had to copy lots of jar files up to where the codebase in the HTML file is to make this run. My question is this.
    Is it better to just change the tomcat security policy file (catalina.policy in tomcat conf directory) so that the JARs are directly accessible and I don't have to copy them from WEB-INF/lib???? Has anyone done this before? What would the line look like?
    I'm assuming that I have to follow the instructions (THAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND)
    at the bottom of the policy file. Can someone help me out here????
    should I have something like
    grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/myappl/WEB-INF/classes/-"
    { permission java.security.AllPermission; };
    grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/myappl/WEB-INF/lib/-"
    { permission java.security.AllPermission; };
    Will this allow me to place references to jar files (and the classes directory) in the archive attribute, such as
    <OBJECT .....  >
        <param name="archive" value="../WEB-INF/lib/applet.jar,../WEB-INF/lib/someapp.jar,../WEB-INF/classes" />trailer for catalina.policy is
    // You can assign additional permissions to particular web applications by
    // adding additional "grant" entries here, based on the code base for that
    // application, /WEB-INF/classes/, or /WEB-INF/lib/ jar files.
    // Different permissions can be granted to JSP pages, classes loaded from
    // the /WEB-INF/classes/ directory, all jar files in the /WEB-INF/lib/

    // grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/-" {
    //   permission java.net.SocketPermission "dbhost.mycompany.com:5432", "connect";
    //   permission java.net.SocketPermission "*.noaa.gov:80", "connect";
    // The permissions granted to the context WEB-INF/classes directory
    // grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/classes/-" {
    // The permission granted to your JDBC driver
    // grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/lib/driver.jar" {
    //   permission java.net.SocketPermission "dbhost.mycompany.com:5432", "connect";
    // The permission granted to the scrape taglib
    // grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/lib/scrape.jar" {
    //   permission java.net.SocketPermission "*.noaa.gov:80", "connect";
    // };

    Thank you for your reply.
    As I mentioned in my first post I had seen a couple of posts mentioning ServletContext before, but dismissed them as I am not using any servlets of my own. However, since you showed me exactly how it was used I realised I could probably just use a dummy servlet to get this information.
    The following page suggests a couple of techniques for doing just this.
    http://www.jguru.com/forums/view.jsp?EID=1087411
    So I think that's me sorted, cheers.

    So far I understood that Web Start can be used to deployed / update only Client Applications.

The standalone app. should send some information to my web app (which is not a problem), but then the user can be at this web app. for a while and then once he sees something he likes here, he can select it which should take him BACK to the standalone application. My question is whether something like this is possible?
    If so, then how do i do it.
    Also the web app and the standalone app run to 2 separate machines and 2 different JVM's.
    Any kind of help will be great.
    Thanks

    Well let me describe the scenario in detail
    We have a standalone java application that is good to search for data across an enterprise database. We also have another application which is web based and uses jsp's and servlets and is good for displaying data in different ways, let's say different kind of graps. Now the user will typically search for something using the standalone application and once he finds what he is looking for, then he might say that he wants to graph the selected data using this web application. Now this part is not too difficult as the standalone app can simply POST the selected information to the web app and the web app can then plot the graph. However, the tricky part is that this web application has the capability to allow the user to select let's say a bar and then get additional info. on that bar. Now to get this additional info. the web app. must contact the standalone app and tell it what bar was selected to get the additional info.
    so my concern is how does the web app contact the standalone app. or even KNOW about this web app. Also, RMI is pretty flaky and i would much rather use web services to accomplish it. If that is the only way to go that is.
    Hope that helps.

  • Single Sign on using SAML between JWS application and Web Application

    Hi,
    We have two applications one is swing based Java Web Start application and other is a normal web application. We are trying to enable single sign on between both the applications. Can SAML be used to enable single sign on? If yes, can some one let us know how to do this?
    Thanks,
    Rama

    Thanks. But it is based on two WEB applications deployed on two different weblogic domains. What I am looking for is one application which is launched using Java Web Start(JNLP) and other a web application. The Java Web Start application uses its proprietary authentication implementation and the web application used DefaultAuthenticator of weblogic. Hope this detail will help you to answer my question better. I should have given this information earlier.
    Thanks.

  • Creating Extranet and Intranet in a single web application?

    I'm confused ... again! Maybe you can help.
    Microsoft's best practices for setting up SharePoint 2013 is to utilize a single web application in a single web application pool.
    My Network Topology
    I am setting up my intranet AND extranet in a back-to-back perimeter network topology using Claims and Kerberos Constrained Delegation. I will have a dedicated AD instance on the DMZ which my clients will be added to. My corporate users will access the site
    via ADFS using their credentials on our internal network. There will be only a One Way Trust wherein the extranet AD will trust the corporate AD. We will be using Host named site collections and giving clients their own URL. They will basically be accessing
    a single list and perhaps a page that gives them some reports about tasks across a few sub-sites and the a status of a single workflow on the root site of their site collection.
    My SharePoint Topology
    I would like to follow MS' Best Practice as stated above but I'm not clear on a few things.
    1. Does it matter whether my extranet or intranet is on the Default Zone? I'm thinking that the intranet should be on the default since that is where Search crawls and that's the only place where search will be used in any way.
    Is it possible to have two sets of permissions on a single web application, one for internal and one for external, without extending the default zone to create the extranet and thereby creating a new IIS website (webapp) in the process?
    Thank you!

  • Can I use the search engine and run a web application under the same iPlanet 6.0 virtual server?

    I've got an iPlanet 6.0 SP2 virtual server with the search engine enabled, which was tested and working. I then deployed a web application to it (mapped to "/"), and the web application works fine but now the search functionality is completely broken. Browsing to /search results in a directory index being displayed. Is there some trick to getting the two working together? I tried shuffling NameTrans directives around, but can only get either the search or the web app working, not both.

    Ok, I'm going to answer my own question now...
    The issue has been resolved after some additional experimentation on my part. There were two causes for my problem:
    1. The NameTrans directives in obj.conf are in the wrong order when Java and Search are enabled from the administration interface.
    Here's the admin server generated obj.conf I started with initially, when the web application was working, but requests to the URI "/search" returning a 404 error:
    <Object name="default">
    NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/search-ui" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/plugins/search/ui" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/mc-icons" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/ns-icons" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/manual" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/manual/https" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="es-search-nametrans" from="/search"
    NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
    NameTrans fn="document-root" root="$docroot"
    </Object>
    Here's my obj.conf now, which works perfectly:
    <Object name="default">
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/search-ui" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/plugins/search/ui" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/mc-icons" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/ns-icons" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/manual" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/manual/https" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="es-search-nametrans" from="/search"
    NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
    NameTrans fn="document-root" root="$docroot"
    </Object>
    The "servlet" NameTrans directive needs to go below all others which map a URI to a function or directory (but before "document-root"), or they break. This is consistent with the iPlanet documentation on NameTrans, but the admin server doesn't get it right!
    2. The developer who wrote the web application uploaded a directory named "search" in the root of his application, which caused the server to display a directory index of "/search", instead of executing the search function. I believe this issue is covered in an iPlanet knowledge base article.

  • Configure Service Principle Name for Application Pool account and web application?

    Hello Community
        On WS2012 Server running Sharepoint 2013 Server when you
    configure SPN you configure it for the SQL server object "MSSQLSvc" (domain account)
    and the user object "HTTP" (domain account).
        The question is if you also should configure SPN for the Application Pool account and
    configure SPN for the web application, how do you configure SPN for the Application Pool
    account and the web application?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut

    The Web Application is only an IIS Site. You're configuring the SPN for the Domain User running the IIS Application Pool (that the Web Application (IIS Site) leverages).
    So you would just need to use the format of:
    setspn -A HTTP/webAppUrl domain\iisapppoolacctusername
    setspn -A HTTP/webAppUrl.fqdn.com domain\iisapppoolacctusername
