Applet Init Performance

Hi,
I am new to Applets.
Every time I access an Applet browser downloads all related classes. Can I do something so that if the classes are not modified then the browser uses the cached copy instead of downloading again and again?
Thanx in advance.
San

Thanks dekassegui,
Your suggested method was useful.
I have my own jar files and also a weblogic.jar file. I have used your method for all my jar files and it works fine. But I have no idea how should I include weblogic.jar in that cache list. It is not under the same CODEBASE as my jar files. Most of the time taken by applet init is for classes from weblogic.jar
By the way I am using Weblogic 7.0 and my client GUI is an Applet that connects back to an RMI server hosted by Weblogic.

  • Applet inits very slow on jre 5.x

    I have a JApplet that inits fine under JRE1.4.2_0x - it loads in 2-3 seconds even when accepting the certificate and jars are caching for the first time. When I update to JRE 5.x though, it takes about a minute until I get to the dialog to accept the certificate, and then it takes several minutes more for the applet to init.
    Once I accept the certificate, and jars are cached, then it loads fine even under JRE 5.x, but this initial process is so slow that it is not acceptable for our users.
    It seems to be related (and maybe I'm wrong) to the JAVA spinning logo that gets displayed on JRE 5.x plugin. When I get that screen (because I must first accept certificate) then it is very slow, and when I don't get that screen (because certificate have been accepted and jars are cached) then everything works just fine.
    Has anyone come across this issue ? If anyone knows how to turn off that initial screen, I would love to know how.
    thanks in advance !

    thanks for your reply. I have fixed it by forcing that spinning logo to not show up - to do so, you can specify your own image (gif or jpeg) to be displayed in that area. Now that not all CPU time are taken up by the spinning logo, my applet loads just fine.
    I will test the Mustang later and let you know, but even with JRE 5, you can fix it by specifying a special applet attribute ("image").

    Hi dudes,
    i have a problem with applet.. it's no a true problem, but it's an annoying problem. I have an applet that work in IE. When it's start with focus on and with maximixe window the applet load very slowly and CPU usage in very busy (88%-100%). When i start the applet with window minimized, it's load very fastly. • Add Approver - applet performance when 'Add here' pressed

    Hi -
    We have recently upgraded to SRM 5.0 (classic) and are noticing that the Add hoc approver functionality is quite slow when using the graphical view.
    Steps:
    - for a sc to be approved, go to Approval Preview
    - click 'Add Approver'
    - on any of the 'Add here' entries, press
    The perofmance problem is when the 'Add here' is pressed - for the graphical view, i.e. using the applet, the performance can take 15 sec. and sometimes longer.  But, if in table view, the performance is o.k. at about 5 sec.
    This leads me to believe that the problem is with the applet (as opposed to for example the agent assignment causing problems, as is the same agent assignment with both ways).
    Just wondering if anyone is noticing the same issue - I have found nothing in OSS nor in this forum.
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Keith,
    We are also in the process of implmenting SRM5.5/EBP5.0.
    Just throwing out some ideas...since the graphical view is using a Jave applet could cause be due tp the jre version?   Parhaps upgrading ot he lates jre will solve the problem.
    Thanks,
    PS.  Where in Canada are you?

  • OutOfMemory error in java.awt.image.DataBufferInt. init

    We have an applet application that performs Print Preview of the images in the canvas. The images are like a network of entities (it has pictures of the entities involve (let's say Person) and how it links to other entities). We are using IE to launch the applet.
    We set min heap space to 128MB, JVM max heap space to 256MB, java plugin max heap space to 256MB using the Control Panel > Java.
    When the canvas width is about 54860 and height is 1644 and perform Print Preview, it thows an OutOfMemoryError in java.awt.image.DataBufferInt.<int>, hence, the Print Preview page is not shown. The complete stack trace (and logs) is as follows:

    Drilling down the cause of the problem. The OutOfMemory occurred in the constructor of DataBufferInt when it tried to create an int array:
    public DataBufferInt(int size) {
    super(STABLE, TYPE_INT, size);
    data = new int[size]; # this part produce out of memory error when size = width X height
    bankdata = new int[1][];
    bankdata[0] = data;
    The OutOfMemory error occurred when size is width * height (54860 X 1644) which is 90,189,840 bytes (~86MB).
    I can replicate the OutOfMemory error when initiating an int array using a test class when it uses the default max heap space but if I increase the heap space to 256MB, it cannot be replicated in the test class.
    Using a smaller width and height with product not exceeding 64MB, the applet can perform Print Preview successfully.
    Given this, I think the java applet is not using the value assigned in javaplugin.maxHeapSize to set the max heap space, hence, it still uses the default max heap size and throws OutOfMemory in int array when size exceeds the default max heap space which is 64MB.
    For additional information, below is some of the java properties (when press S in java applet console):
    browser = sun.plugin
    browser.vendor = Sun Microsystems, Inc.
    browser.version = 1.1
    java.awt.graphicsenv = sun.awt.Win32GraphicsEnvironment
    java.awt.printerjob = sun.awt.windows.WPrinterJob
    java.class.path = C:\PROGRA~1\Java\jre6\classes

    java.runtime.name = Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment

    javaplugin.maxHeapSpace = 256M

    javaplugin.vm.options = -Xms128M -Djavaplugin.maxHeapSpace=256M -Xmx256m -Xms128M
    javawebstart.version = javaws-1.6.0_17
    Kindly advise if this is a bug in JRE or wrong setting. If wrong setting, please advise on the proper way to set the heap space to prevent OutOfMemory in initializing int array.
    Thanks a lot.

    I assumed that one element in the int array is 1 byte. ..Your assumption is wrong. How could it be possible to store 32 bits (4 bytes) in 8 bits (1 byte)? (a)

  • Applets and memory not being released by Java Plug-in

    Hi.
    I am experiencing a strange memory-management behavior of the Java Plug-in with Java Applets. The Java Plug-in seems not to release memory allocated for non-static member variables of the applet-derived class upon destroy() of the applet itself.
    I have built a simple "TestMemory" applet, which allocates a 55-megabytes byte array upon init(). The byte array is a non-static member of the applet-derived class. With the standard Java Plug In configuration (64 MB of max JVM heap space), this applet executes correctly the first time, but it throws an OutOfMemoryException when pressing the "Reload / Refresh" browser button or if pressing the "Back" and then the "Forward" browser buttons. In my opionion, this is not an expected behavior. When the applet is destroyed, the non-static byte array member should be automatically invalidated and recollected. Isn't it?
    Here is the complete applet code:
    // ===================================================
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class TestMemory extends JApplet
      private JLabel label = null;
      private byte[] testArray = null;
      // Construct the applet
      public TestMemory()
      // Initialize the applet
      public void init()
        try
          // Initialize the applet's GUI
          guiInit();
          // Instantiate a 55 MB array
          // WARNING: with the standard Java Plug-in configuration (i.e., 64 MB of
          // max JVM heap space) the following line of code runs fine the FIRST time the
          // applet is executed. Then, if I press the "Back" button on the web browser,
          // then press "Forward", an OutOfMemoryException is thrown. The same result
          // is obtained by pressing the "Reload / Refresh" browser button.
          // NOTE: the OutOfMemoryException is not thrown if I add "testArray = null;"
          // to the destroy() applet method.
          testArray = new byte[55 * 1024 * 1024];
          // Do something on the array...
          for (int i = 0; i < testArray.length; i++)
            testArray[i] = 1;
          System.out.println("Test Array Initialized!");
        catch (Exception e)
          e.printStackTrace();
      // Component initialization
      private void guiInit() throws Exception
        setSize(new Dimension(400, 300));
        getContentPane().setLayout(new BorderLayout());
        label = new JLabel("Test Memory Applet");
        getContentPane().add(label, BorderLayout.CENTER);
      // Start the applet
      public void start()
        // Do nothing
      // Stop the applet
      public void stop()
        // Do nothing
      // Destroy the applet
      public void destroy()
        // If the line below is uncommented, the OutOfMemoryException is NOT thrown
        // testArray = null;
      //Get Applet information
      public String getAppletInfo()
        return "Test Memory Applet";
    // ===================================================Everything works fine if I set the byte array to "null" upon destroy(), but does this mean that I have to manually set to null all applet's member variables upon destroy()? I believe this should not be a requirement for non-static members...
    I am able to reproduce this problem on the following PC configurations:
    * Windows XP, both JRE v1.6.0 and JRE v1.5.0_11, both with MSIE and with Firefox
    * Linux (Sun Java Desktop), JRE v1.6.0, Mozilla browser
    * Mac OS X v10.4, JRE v1.5.0_06, Safari browser
    Your comments would be really appreciated.
    Thank you in advance for your feedback.
    Regards,
    Marco.

    Hi Marco,
    my guess as to why JPI would keep references around, if it does keep them, is that it propably is an implementation side effect. A lot of things are cached in the name of performance and it is easy to leave things laying around in your cache. Maybe the page with the associated images/applets is kept in the browser cache untill the browser needs some memory and if the browser memory manager is not co-operating with the JPI/JVM memory manager the browser is not out of memory, thus not releasing its caches but the JVM may be out of memory. Thus the browser indirectly keeps the reference that it realy does not need. This reference could be inderect through some 'applet context' or what ever the browser uses to interact with JPI, don't realy know any of these details, just imaging what must/could be going on there. Browser are amazingly complicated beast.
    This behaviour that you are observing, weather the origin is something like I speculated or not, is not nice but I would not expect it to be fixed even if you filed a bug report. I guess we are left with relleasing all significatn memory structures in destroy. A simple way to code this is not to store anything in the member fields of the applet but in a separate class; then one has to do is to null that one reference from the applet to that class in the destroy method and everything will be relased when necessary. This way it is not easy to forget to release things.
    Hey, here is a simple, imaginary, way in which the browser could cause this problem:
    The browser, of course needs a reference to the applet, call it m_Applet here. Presume the following helper function:
    Applet instantiateAndInit(Class appletClass) {
    Applet applet=appletClass.newInstance();
    applet.init();
    return applet;
    When the browser sees the applet tag it instantiates and inits the new applet as follows:
    m_Applet=instantiateAndInit(appletClass);
    As you can readily see, the second time the instantiation occurs, the m_Applet holds the reference to the old applet until after the new instance is created and initlized. This would not cause a memory leak but would require that twice the memory needed by the applet would be required to prevent OutOfMemory.I guess it is not fair to call this sort of thing a bug but it is questionable design.In real life this is propably not this blatant, but could happen You could try, if you like, by allocating less than 32 Megs in your init. If you then do not run out of memory it is an indication that there are at most two instances of your applet around and thus it could well be someting like I've speculated here.

  • Trying to Imitate the html POST  method with an applet

    I am trying to imitate the POST method with an applet, so that I can eventually send sound from a microphone to a PHP script which will store it in a file on a server. I am starting out by trying to post a simple line of text by making the PHP script think that it is receiving the text within a POST-ed file. The reason I am doing things this way is in part because I am, for the time being, limited to a shared server without any support for servlets or any other server side java.
    The code I am trying is based in part on an old thread found elsewhere in this forum, concerning sending data to a PHP file by imitating the POST method:
    link:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=530399&messageID=2603608
    someone named "harmmeijer" provided most of the answers on that thread. If that person is still around hope they take a look at this,also I have some questions to clarify what they said on the other thread..
    My first attempt at code is below. The applet is in a signed jar file and is trying to pass a text line to the PHP script in the same directory and on the same server that the applet came from. It is doing this by sending header information that is supposed to be identical to what an html form would send if it was uploading a .txt file with the line of text within it. The applet displays one button. When you press it, it sucessfully starts up the postsim method (defined at the end), which is supposed to send the info to the PHP script at the server.
    I have two questions:
    1) I know that the PHP script is starting up, because it prints out a few messages depending on what happens. However, the script does not recognize any file coming down the line, so it does not save anyting on the server, and prints out a message saying the no file was uploaded.
    Any idea what might be going wrong? I'm not getting any error messages from the applet. I've tried a few different variations of the 'header' information contained in the line:
    osToServer.writeBytes("--****4353\r\nContent-Disposition: form-data; name=\"testfile\"; filename=\"C:testfile.txt\"\r\nContent-Type: text/plain\r\n");
    The commented out line below it shows one variation (which was given in the thread mentioned above).
    2) You'll notice that I've commented out the two lines having to do with the input line:
    //InputStream isFromServer;
    and
    //isFromServer = uc.getInputStream();
    The reason is that the program crahes whenever I put the latter line in - to the extent that Opera closes down the JVM and then crashes when I tried to exit it.. I must be doing something horribly wrong there! I first tried using isFromServer = new DataInputStream(uc.getInputStream());
    becuase it was consistent with the output stream, but that caused the same problem.
    Here's the code:
    public class AudioUptest1 extends Applet{
    //There are a few spurious things defined in this section, having to do with the fact the microphone data is evenuatly going to be sent. haven't yet insterted code to get input from a microphone.
    AudioFormat audioFormat;
    TargetDataLine targetDataLine;
    SourceDataLine sourceDataLine;
    DataOutputStream osToServer;
    //InputStream isFromServer;
    URLConnection uc;
    final JButton captureBtn = new JButton("Capture");
    final JPanel btnPanel = new JPanel();
    public void init(){
    System.out.println("Started the applet");
    try
    URL url = new URL( "http://www.mywebsite.com/handleapplet.php" );
    uc = url.openConnection();
    //Post multipart data
    uc.setDoOutput(true);
    uc.setDoInput(true);
    uc.setUseCaches(false);

    Hi All,
    I was trying to write a signed applet that helps the
    user of the applet to browse the local hard disk and
    select a file from the same. The JFileChooser class
    from Swing is what I used in my applet. The problem
    is with the policy file. I am not able to trace the
    exact way to write a policy file which gives a total
    access to read,write,delete,execute on all the drives
    of the local hard disk.
    I am successful in signing the applets and performing
    operations : read,write,delete & execute on a single
    file but failing to grant permission for the entire
    file.
    Any help would be highly appreciated.Which policy file are you using? there might be more than one policy file.
    also, u have to specify the alias of the signed certificate in the policy file to grant the necessary priviledges to the signed applet.

  • Applet working on JBuilder but not on appletviewer!!!!!

    I ve made a keybord.Here some buttons are missing. The user presses the buttons and shapes a word!When the jButton22 is pressed(Comparison button) the applet tells him if the result is true or false and displays an image(imageIcon foruser in jlabel forusers) with the correct result!!The jlabel for users is setVisible(false) and setVisible(true) when the comparison button is pressed and the result is wrong.My problem is that the jlabel works fine in JBuilder but when i run the applet in appletviewer the jlabel forusers isnt showing!!If i minimize and maximize the window then the label appears and from that point is working properly!Any suggestions would be appreciated!Thank you!!

    Applet5_jButton25_actionAdapter(Applet5 adaptee) {
    this.adaptee = adaptee;
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
    adaptee.jButton25_actionPerformed(e);
    }

    I performed some testing on your program, and get an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException on one of the buttons. So, I guess there have to be some implementation logic error.
    Since I have no idea what your program is trying to achieve, here's what you can do:
    1. Try to shorten your program.
    2. Add your code piece by piece.
    3. Perform some logic testing.
    4. Repeat steps 2 & 3.

  • Need help with applet related problems

    First of all hello to everyone. I'm new to this forum. I usually can solve my problems google-ing around, but this time I just ran out of ideas.
    I'm trying to develop a jni applet that can run native code for performance. I used netbeans so far and the applet works great when run from within the ide. At some point a managed to make the applet run inside firefox and iexplore, however somehow i screwed something up and now i can't make it run anymore. I don't really know what i did but i think it may be related to these lines in the console since everything up until awt works fine in the applet:
    basic: JNLP2ClassLoader.findLibrary: Looking up native library: jawt.dll
    network: Looking up native library in: C:\Users\Gladiator\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\10\1082924a-7851bf5e-n\jawt.dll
    basic: Native library jawt.dll not found
    Ofc i may be wrong.
    This also my be a local problem because a friend of mine tried the applet himself and said it's working.
    All the jars are selfsigned.
    below i posted the console output in case you want to take a look. Also I am interested about the "try again.." messages that seem to pop over and over again.

    I am sorry for bold, i came here to ask for help. I used bold to differentiate output from my questions since i couldn't find tags.
    I already validated jnlp using JaNeLA and got only optimization suggestions.
    As I said in first post, this works for a friend of mine, so it's possible a local issue with my java or something ...
    Also i reinstalled jre/jdk 7.0, then uninstalled and installed latest jre/jdk 6.
    Hope I didn't leave a bad impression, i just want help.

  • Applet Method Signed?

    Hello,
    I'm relativly new to the applet world so sorry if my question looks stupid.
    I'm currently working on a Java applet that performs a screencapture and save it to the client file system.
    To be able to capture the screen and write it , i had to sign the Applet.
    It is what i did using : Keytool and Jarsigner tools.
    So on my test applet , in the Init() method , i perform my screencapture and save it. It works well if the applet is signed , if not i have security exception that is normal.
    Then i tried to move my code to another method. I removed it from the Init() and create a new method i named CaptureScreen() . And i copied my previous code in that method.
    In my HTML Test page, i have embedded the applet using <APPLET> tag and add a HTML button that triggers a javascript that calls my method.
    MyApplet.Capture();
    My problem :
    When i call this method on the signed applet i got a security exception.
    java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.awt.AWTPermission createRobot)
    If the same code is called in the Applet's Init'() method i don't have it.
    So i guess i have to sign the Capture() method too. But how to do that? How to sign a specific method?
    Thanks a lot in advance for your help
    Youki

    Hi
    You don't sign methods. You sign the whole .jar file. So if you signed the file again after the adding the captureScreen() method, the applet .jar file should be OK.
    Not sure but I guess the problem occurs because the calling script is not signed.
    See http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/guide/plugin/security.html
    (I can't find the same information in newer plugin developer guides though.)

  • Applets and Text Area

    Howdy,
    I would like to display two variables. How hard could it be?
    Is there something I am missing? Something I havent decalred?
    The init method creates a simple button and text area. Then when the button is clicked
    it perform an action. Calls a method within action then I want to print the results.
    Im very new to Applets. Any advice
    Button Btn;
    TextArea ta;
    double var1;
    double var2;
    public void init(){
    testBtn = new Button("Start");
    TextArea ta = new TextArea("Click the 'Start' button to run the test", 4, 30);
    add(Btn);
    add(ta);
    public boolean action (Event e, Object args){
    if (e.target == Btn){
    // a call to a method, value comes back then I display the variable in the Text Box
    ta.append("Variable 1: " + var1);
    ta.append("Variable 2: " + var2);
    return true;

    This version should run just fine. Some comments:
    1 - the action method has been deprecated, ie, it isn't used anymore. What we do now is add an ActionListener to the button. When the button is pressed java looks in the actionPerformed method to find out what to do. The java tutorial has a good lesson on this, recommended.
    2 - I added a main method so you can run this on the command line like an application. Also you can run it as is with appletviewer.
    /*  <applet code="AppletTest" width="400" height="400"></applet>
    *  use: >appletviewer AppletTest.java
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class AppletTest extends Applet implements ActionListener
        TextArea ta;
        Button addTextButton;
        double var1, var2;
        public void init()
            ta = new TextArea(4,30);
            addTextButton = new Button("add text");
            addTextButton.addActionListener(this);
            Panel north = new Panel();
            north.add(addTextButton);
            var1 = 123.92;
            var2 = 12.5;
            setLayout(new BorderLayout());
            add(north, "North");
            add(ta);
        public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
            Button button = (Button)e.getSource();
            if(button == addTextButton)
                ta.append("Variable 1: " + var1 + "\n");
                ta.append("Variable 2: " + var2 + "\n");
        public static void main(String[] args)
            Applet applet = new AppletTest();
            Frame f = new Frame();
            f.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter()
                public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e)
                    System.exit(0);
            f.add(applet);
            f.setSize(400,400);
            f.setLocation(200,200);
            applet.init();
            f.setVisible(true);
    }

  • Problem of dynamically change components in Applet

    Hello, All,
    I need to dynamically change Applet components. For example, remove a button, and replace it with drop down list etc. I use remove and add methods to perform the task. But it does not work. Applet just become blank. And repaint does not help either. Any of you know how to solve the problem. I will really apprecation that.

  • Closing browser window from an Applet?

    I've written a series of applets that perform different functions. I placed a button on each applet with the purpose to close the window in which that applet is running. However I don't even know where to start looking to find out how to make my applet close it's own browser window. I know how to open a new browser window from an applet but not vice versa.
    Can anyone help please?
    Mark.

    Right, I sort of tracked down some code that uses getMethods to allow me to invoke a Javascript command. It is not pretty and took a little bit of editing to get to work but it does the job without putting JS stuff into my HTML.
    However it is causing some problems. If I open one of my other applets it will only let me close that window and the previous applets ceases to respond at all. I think this may be because the invoke gets the JSObject which is the window and somehow having more than one applet open in different windows is causing it to get confused and is locking the first window and only responding to the second.
    I have seen a much simpler method that uses:
    import netscape.javascript.*;
    and JSObject to get the window but my compiler complains about the import. Any further suggestions or an example would be welcome as my current solution is a bit limited as you can effectively only have one window open at a time which doesn't suit my needs.
    Many thanks.
    Mark.

  • Simple button applet help

    ok, i'm working on a project involving buttons, and i finished it and it compiles fine, but when i run the applet (using textpad), nothign shows up.
    i decided to make a new applet of only the frame and buttons, and i got the same problem. here is the simple one.
    import java.util.*;
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.event.*;
    public class framek extends JApplet
         public static final int WIDTH = 600;
         public static final int HEIGHT = 300;
         public void framek()
              JFrame myWindow = new JFrame();
              myWindow.setSize(WIDTH, HEIGHT);
         Container contentPane = myWindow.getContentPane();
              contentPane.setBackground(Color.blue);
              contentPane.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
              JPanel button = new JPanel();
              button.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
              JButton convert = new JButton("Translate");
              button.add(convert);
              JButton delete = new JButton("Delete");
              button.add(delete);
              contentPane.add(button, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
    i might have made some mistakes in the shortening of my project (such as variables that arent used) but i just need help with getting the buttons and background things to show. I used very similar programs in a textbook and on the web to check and they worked fine on textpad, and this doesnt. its probably a very simple thing that i forgot but i cant find it yet, as i am fairly new to swing.
    any help is appreciated thanks
