Applet read/write to drive?

I'm considering learing java to create a applet that people can use while playing a game. I read somewhere that applets can't normally read/write to a drive. Is this true? How could the information the users put in be saved on their side for future use? Do I have to go with C++?

Your answer is "yes, but".
Your applet can access the user's drive if you "sign" it. You may already have found that out in your research. What that means is, the first time the user loads your applet, a dialog box will come up asking the user if they want to allow your applet to do that.
This may cause the user to become suspicious, especially in these days where worms and viruses are on the front page of the newspaper. However if your users are your friends and acquaintances -- or have some other reason to trust you -- then that may not be a problem.

  • Applet read/write files

    Hi,
I have a problem to use getCodeBase to get the URL. Actually, I am pretty confused on running the applet in our intranet.
Let me explain my problem here, I have mapped a network drive(G:\personA) in my machine and my applet and all the files are in G:\personA\classes. In my coding, I have tried to specify my files paths such as G:\personA\classes\index.txt and I can run the applet without any problem either with Eclipse or from a web site http://personA//report.html. But the other members in this company cannot run this applet thro' this web site( http://personA//report.html). The problem is "No class found", can't find the path G:\personA\classes\index.txt.
So I decided to change my code by reading/writing files thro URL i,e : http://personA/classes, but when I run my applet, I got the following exception :

I think a trace would help, guessing is fun but won't solve your problem:
To turn the full trace on (windows) you can start the java console, to be found here:
    C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4...\bin\jpicpl32.exe
In the advanced tab you can fill in something for runtime parameters fill in this:
    -Djavaplugin.trace=true -Djavaplugin.trace.option=basic|net|security|ext|liveconnect
if you cannot start the java console check here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\userName\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
I think for linux this is somewhere in youruserdir/java (hidden directory)
add or change the following line:
    javaplugin.jre.params=-Djavaplugin.trace\=true -Djavaplugin.trace.option\=basic|net|security|ext|liveconnect
    for 1.5:
    deployment.javapi.jre.1.5.0.args=-Djavaplugin.trace\=true -Djavaplugin.trace.option\=basic|net|security|ext|liveconnect
    The trace is here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\your user\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\log\plugin...log

  • How do I give myself read/write access/permissions for my external drive?

Im a brand new Mac user, so please stay with me.
I have an external drive and I can't delete, modify, ANYTHING on it. When I go to "Get Info" it says "You can only read" under sharing & permissions. How do I change this?

When you get info on the external drive, at the very bottom is a box you can check
    "Ignore ownership on this volume"...
If you check that, then see if you can delete and move things around.
If that doesn't work then try clicking on the + sign and adding you as an admin so you can Read & Write.

  • How do i change read/write permission on an external hard drive?

how do i change read/write permissions for an external hard drive?

If, on the otherhand, you are trying to write to a drive that is formatted NTFS (for Windows), and can't.
    You have two choices...
    1. Reformat the drive. Either Mac OS format, if you are using this only on your Mac. Or ExFAT, or FAT 32 if you intend to use it on both a Mac OS computer and a Windows unit. note: ExFAT is not suported by XP.
    2. Install one of the drivers necessary for the Mac to write to a NTFS volume. Unless you want the experience of having the support for this being one that is sporadic, avoid this. I used to be a strong proponent of NTFS-3G, until I started having the problems with Lion, that many users warned us about. Go this route only if you find you must use NTFS on your drive. Paragon and Tuxtera are the sources for these.

  • Being able to 'Read & Write' on an external hard drive on the Mac

    Hi there,
I can't seem to be able to add things to my external hard drives on my MacBook Pro. I can with my USB stick but not with the larger external hard drives. Could someone help me change the permission settings to allow me to 'Read & Write' rather than just 'Read Only'.
    Thanks
    Nadia

How is this drive formatted? If it is NTFS then it is read-only. In order to use it on the Mac you will have to repartition and reformat the drive. On the other hand if it is properly partitioned and formatted for the Mac and the drive has become read-only then there is a different solution.
    For the first alternative:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    For the second alternative:
Fix No Access Permissions on HD.

  • HELP !!! External hard drive MBA/PC read/write

HELP !!! I have justbought an MBA and want to be able to read/write to an external hard drive netween both the MBA and PC.  Help!  Do I need to partition the hard drive or is FAT (FAT 32 ?) format still the best method?  Grateful for any advice

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
As you know, OS X hasn't got NTFS write support. If your external drive is formatted in NTFS, you can install a third-party application to be able to write in the external drive like Paragon NTFS.
However, in my opinion, that's not the best option. OS X supports two filesystems which are compatible with PCs: FAT32 and exFAT. FAT32 is a filesystem which is limited to files smaller than 4 GB, and exFAT is like FAT32 but without this restriction so, if you can, format the external drive with exFAT.
To do it, first you have to copy all the files you have on the external drive to a Mac or PC, because you will lose them from the external drive. Then, format the external drive on a PC. If you do it on a Mac, PCs won't recognize this external drive. exFAT is compatible with Windows XP SP3 or newer and Mac OS X 10.6.5 or newer

  • Formatting external drive for read/write PC/Mac & files greater than 4GB

I'm on Snow Leopard and deliver an external drive off-site to a video editor who needs to read/write to the drive and return the edited files and then I need to read/write all over again. All video files are greater than 4GB. How would I go about this? Third party applications like MacDrive create too much overhead when processing video files. FAT32 limits file sizes to 4GB.

    Hi WillDuffy;
Your requirement of files greater than 4GB eliminates FAT.
In your case since you don't have access to the PC, I am afraid you are forced to use the NTFS. This will require you to use the reverse engineered effort called NTFS-3G to be able to write to the disk from your Mac. Sorry.

  • Why is external hard drive read-only on one Mac, but read/write on another?

I have a Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive.  I bought it to be compatible with both Windows and Mac, which it currently is.  It works just fine on my PC and my MacBook.  However, recently, I bought a MacBook Pro.  The Seagate drive shows up as read only on the MacBook Pro, though it is read/write on my MacBook.  It's formatted NTFS, yes, but it already works on my MacBook.  What's going on here?

Nope, one of the selling points of the drive was that it came ready to work with both Mac and Windows (the product description says there is an NTFS drive installed for use on Mac).  No hacking or installing on my part.
But I think I figured it out.  Apparentely, Mavericks comes installed with something that does not allow it to write NTFS no matter what (well, unless you go through a whole bunch of technical stuff to rewrite the software).  My old MacBook was Leopard.
I'll just reformat the external hard drive for Mac, and if I ever need to use it on a Windows, I'll install HFS+ Explorer on the Windows.  Oh well.

  • HT1549 How do I read write to an external drive?  I am under admin account and cannot read write to any folder on the external drive.

I have a Mac Mini with Mavericks installed, as well as a PC running Windows 7.  I want to be able to read write from both computers to an external drive on the Mac.  I created 2 folders on the drive and named them Movies, and TV Shows.  The content of those folders are the respective files. I set up both folders to be shared on the Mac under system preferences, and then mapped the drives on the PC.  I also created a user account with admin privileges on the mac that matched my PC.   I then copied a Music folder to the root drive instead of using external, and set up sharing as well.  File Sharing is selected for all three folders, however the music folder is the only one which allows me to change the permissions to allow read write to everyone, or to create individual user accounts to connect with read write permissions.  The options to add users or change permissions are simply grayed out for the two folders on the external drive, so not only can I not write from my PC, but I can’t even do it on the Mac with the administrative user logged in. The folder on the root drive is fine but I cannot make any changes to the external drive at all.  Get info for any folder on drive shows read only.  SMB and AFP are selected for all folders under options.  I can access all three folders from PC, but can only add files to the Music folder. I cannot do anything from either computer to the folders on the external drive.

Try Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility - select the drive and run Repair Disk.

  • External Hard drive suddenly will only read! How can I make it read/write again?

    Hi folks,
I'm working with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 320gb External Hard Drive on the imacs here at my university. I have it formatted to ExFAT so that I could use it with my pc as well but I've never had to so far so it's only ever been used on the uni imacs.
It's been fine for working on media projects until suddenly when i came back to uni after the Christmas break I went to continue working on a film project and realised the external hard drive now said read only??
One thing I did was to put all of my work from last semester (which is everything that was on the hard drive into a single folder) could that have caused the problem?
And does anyone know how i can reset my permissions to read/write without causing damage or risk to the files on the hard-drive as I can't clear the disk (i have no where else to store the 185gb of video footage).
I'd really appreciate it if anyone could tell me how i can fix it? I know how to do all of this on my pc but i've no idea with the mac as i only use it for my media projects here in the university.
    Thanks!
    DrF ;-)

Out of curiosity , will this method also work for an external drive formatted to NTFS.. I have a lot of data that I have nowhere to Float while re-formatting the drive , so If this method would allow me to keep the data and still fix the problem that would be great !!  At the moment the drive is formatted to NTFS and permissions say Read/Write , but I can only Read.. Very Frustrating as my mac drive is running low on space and performance is being affected.. Any help appreicated !!

  • Make external hard drive read/write

Not quite sure if there is in the right section but oh well.
    Here's the story:
SeaGate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive (1.5TB) (THE FOLLOWING INFO WAS TAKEN FROM ITS APPLICATION: ("SEAGATE DRIVE SETTINGS")
    Drive Info
    Model: FA GoFlex Desk
    Firmware: 0D19
    Volume Info
    Format: Windows NT Filesystem
    Capacity: 1397.26 GB
    Available: 1224.35 GB
    Used: 172.91 GB
    Mount point: /Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive
So it seems to slow down my iMac (10.6.8), 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.5GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (memory) (1st Generation 17 inch) a fair bit. Could this be because of the Format? I have no idea why it says that. When I first installed it, it asked what OS I'm going to use it for. Not quite sure if I chose both or just Mac. But those files have somehow dissappeared.
Now in Disk Utility...the RAID tab, Format says it is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but then in the Erase tab it says Format: Windows NT Filesystem
Which format is it set to!?!?!?!?!?!?!
    Now to the main point:
I also have a new 13" MacBook Pro. When I plug it into it, I only have Read Permissions. How do I make it have Write Permissions as well?
Sorry for the long essay...I hope you can help me. I might have two problems here.
    1. Is the format correctly set up for my iMac?
    2. How do I set it to have Read/Write permissions on different computers?
    Thanks.

The Format is incorrect for Mac use, as you guessed.  Go into Disk Utility again, highlight the external har drive in the left hamd column by clicking on it and select the "Erase" tab, up and over to the right.  Then select the Format below that will be installed as "Mac OS Extended (Journeled)".  THEN, OK the erasure.  That should clear things up.
Note: your Windows PC will NO LONGER be able to read the external hard drive.  It will be formatted for OS X use.
    Hope this helps

  • Can only read external hard drive, not write to

    Hi
I have a Mac Book Pro and a 60GB external Hard Drive which I use to transfer files between my Win PC (!!) and my Mac. transferring files from PC to Mac is fine using the HDD but when I try to copy files from my Mac to the HDD it says I cannot write to the drive as it is read only. How do i make it writable as well as readable. Its formatted as Windows NT Filesystem if that helps.

    mp_photo wrote:

    Hi,
    that is the culprit.
Mac OSX is only capable of reading from NTFS drives but can not write to them.
    Possible solutions:
Reformat the external drive to FAT32 (using Disk Utility and 'MS-DOS'),
but be aware of the the size limit of 4GB for a single file
    use MacFuse: http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
Caution: reformatting the drive will delete all files on it, so make a backup before.

  • How to edit (read/write) an external hard drive that is attached to a router

    Hi everyone.
I have Macbook Air (2013) with OSX 10.9 Maverics, and Netgear WNDR4500 router with WD external hard drive attached to it. My problem is that I don’t have writing permissions. When I’m trying to change something in the hard drive, it says “The operation can’t be completed, because you don’t have necessary permission”. Under Get info / Sharing & Permissions, it just says “You have custom access”, and there is no option to change privileges to “Read & Write”.
I would appreciate if anyone could help me with this.
    Thanks!

I don't use TM, but as far as I know, the only way it will work wirelessly is with a Time Capsule. Check the info here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/2.html
which is from one of the subheadings here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I would guess that you'd be able to write to the drive once you have it attached via a cable (FW, USB, etc) to your Mac (not your router).
