Applet: writing to file

hi there.
i need serious help on using an applet and writing the user response into a text file.
issit possible in the first place? cos i read at a lot of sources saying applet cant write to file?
any help is much appreciated
thx!

Where do you plane on writing the file to server where the applet is or on the client machine? Applets can only write to files that are on the same filesystem or on the same machine that it was loaded into the browser from. So if you want user to run this applet and have it write out a file you will have to get them to download the .class file and then run it from their computer.
here is somthing might help a bit more.

Please give more detail about what you want to.

  • Applet writing on a output file

    I am new to JAVA and I've got jdk 1.4.1 downloaded.
    I am thinking it is possible to have a JAVA applet
    which writes on a output file.
    In order to do that, I tried to use the code below, where the Applet "write.class" should display a string on a painted area and write to file "myfile.txt".
    Now compilation is OK (no error or warning messages), and I tried to incorporate this Applet into a HTML code (by using the sintax <applet code="write.class" width=200 height=50> </applet>).
    When I open the HTML document using Internet Explorer the Applet is run, but the file "myfile.txt" is not created.
    Can somebody explain me what is going wrong?
    Any suggestion or comment is welcome and appreciated.
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class write extends Applet {
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    g.drawString("The Java Applet is Writing!",20,30);
         main();
    public static void main(){
    FileOutputStream out;
    PrintStream p;
         try
              out = new FileOutputStream("myfile.txt");
    p = new PrintStream( out );
              p.println ("This is to be written to a file");
    p.close();
         catch (Exception e)
              System.err.println ("Error writing to file");

    applets are not allowed to write to the local file system.
    you wouldn't like something that came with a web site without your confirmation fill up your hard drive, would you?

  • IDES for writing Java card applets and converting the applets as CAP FILE.

    I have developed a JAVA CARD APPLET , FindMFValueJCA.java . It gets compiles in net beans 6.0 But while converting the applet to CAP file i am getting some errors. Is there any other IDES which take care of converting the CAP files

    What's the Java version you are using?
    As the java card tool kit has version dependencies. If you are using java_card _kit 2.2.2 then 1.5 is fine.

    How do I make an Applet read a file on my web host?
    I am wanting to put a file on my web host that has usernames and user details and other stuff on it...
    I was wondering whether anyone knows how to make the Applet open a file on my webserver, check if the username exists, if not add to the file the username and details?
    thanks

    URL myURL = new URL(getDocumentBase(), filename);
    InputStream myInputStream = myURL.openStream();

    Use output stream for writing..

  • Applet witing to file

    I have a quick question. I have a signed applet. In the applet I am trying to write to a file
    FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(m_File)
    this throws an error. Even though the applet is signed. I found this information:
    In Java2 JDK1.2, reading or writing a file, are not permitted for applets unless explicitly allowed by a permission in a policy file. JDK 1.1 is much harder to implement because your Applet must be digital signed to be trusted. With JDK 1.2 you can also apply security constraints to Java applications.
    Do I have to create some permission file (POLICYTOOL)?
    Can I just use the java.io.FilePermission with "write"?
    thanks in advance

  • Applet saving dll files

    we have an applet which uses native components (dll) via jni. its a secure signed applet and accesses the cilients local file system and writes the needed dll to users temp folder on load.
    we do that with policy settigs
                       Policy.setPolicy(new Policy() {
                   public PermissionCollection getPermissions(CodeSource codesource){
                        Permissions perms = new Permissions();
                        perms.add(new AllPermission());
                        return (perms);
                   public void refresh(){
              });while applet is running you can not delete the dll (locked file) which was writtnen by the applet (which is a good thing)
    I guess because of the recent windows security updates (or sun changed something) we now can not write the dll file directly. we somehow achieve it by writing it as a temp file:
    if we use File.createTempFile("wrapper", ".dll",new File (tempFolder)) we can write it as a temp file which is a strange thing.
    and now while the applet is running, the temp file can be deleted.
    Can any one tell me about the changes that was made by microsoft or sun which causes these differences.

    hi, do do you know some url where I get information
    about how to make an applet for uploading files by
    drag and drop?
    thanksI would assume you can search the net to find such a URL better than anyone else here could, since you supposedly know more details about what you're looking for. I won't even bother to write a sample Google search URL - you can do that. Use your brain a little.

  • Applet accessing local files under Vista

    I have a signed applet that accesses files on the client machine. This applet is not able to open files when running under Windows Vista (I get an "Access denied" message). I found that in C++ there is a function called GetTempPath, which returns a path to a directory where and OCX control can access files. So here is my question:
    Is there some Java function that will return the path to the directory mentioned above?
    Thanks for your help.

    Sorry, DrClap, but...
    Post 1: "I have a signed applet that accesses files on the client machine. This applet is not able to open files when running under Windows Vista (I get an "Access denied" message)." While he mentions temp files/dirs, that is not, IMO the issue, because...
    Post 6: "Under these OSs [XP, 2000], my applet uses a directory called c:\program files\mydir. This applet is not able to access files in the same directory under Windows Vista, access is denied in this case." The specified directory is not a "temp" dir as typically returned by the system parameters that I've ever seen, so I'm assuming he's using this explicitly. In which case, access is denied writing to it. In which case, it appears to be a signed applet permission issue.
    While the java.io.tmpDir system param may be giving an issue to, that doesn't seem to be the key point in what I'm reading. Otherwise it's not written entirely clearly.

  • Access denied error while writing a file to the file system - myfileupload.saveas() throws system.unauthorizedexception

    hi,
    as part of my requirement , i have to perform read and  write  operations of  few files [ using the file upload control in my custom visual web part] and on submit button click.
    but while writing these files - with the help of  fileupload control - and when i use  myfileupload.saveas(mylocation);
    - i am saving these files into my D:\ drive of my server , where i am executing my code -, am getting access denied error.
    it throws system.unauthorizedexception.
    i have given full control on that folder where i was trying to store my attached files. and also  after following asp.net forums,
    i have added  iusr group added and performed all those steps such that, the file is saved in my D:\ drive.
    but unfortunately  that didnt happen.
    also
    a) i am trying the code with runwithelevatedprivileges(delegate() )  code
    b) shared the drive within the  d :drive where i want o save the files.
    c) given the full privieleges for the app pool identity- in my case , its
    network service.
    the  other strange thing is that, the same code works perfectly in  other machine, where the same sp, vs 2012  etc were installed .
    would like to know, any other changes/ steps i need to make it on this  server, where i am getting the  error.
    help is  appreciated!

    Hi Friends,
    I have gone through scores of examples and i am failing to understand the right thing to be done to copy a file from one directory to another. Here is my class...So let's see... C:\GetMe1 is a directory on your machine, right? And this is what you are doing with that directory:
    public static void copyFiles(File src, File dest) throws IOException
    // dest is a 'File' object but represents the C:\GetMe1 directory, right?
    fout = new FileOutputStream (dest);If it's a directory, where in your code are you appending the source file name to the path, before trying to open an output stream on it? You're not.
    BTW, this is awful:
    catch (IOException e)
    IOException wrapper = new IOException("copyFiles: Unable to copy file: " +
    src.getAbsolutePath() + "to" + dest.getAbsolutePath()+".");
    wrapper.initCause(e);
    wrapper.setStackTrace(e.getStackTrace());
    throw wrapper;
    }1) You're hiding the original IOException and replacing it with your own? For what good purpose?
    2) Even if you had a good reason to do that, this would be simpler and better:
    throw new IOException("your custom message goes here", e);
    rather than explicitly invokign initCause and setStackTrace. Yuck!

  • How do I update a file in an Applet's JAR file from the Applet code

    Here's my problem.
    My applet is using a serializable history data in which I am storing in the applet's JAR file. When I run the applet, I read the file with "getResourceAsStream()" and run my program with that hist data. When my applet is closed, I need to update this file from my Applet's code and I dumfounded about how to do that.
    Is there any way to update a file in the Applet's JAR file through the Java Applet code? (i.e. OutputStream?).
    Would appreciate any advice people have.

    Just place a copy of the file on the local hard disk and update that. When you start the Applet you try to read from the hard disk. If the file exists then no problem otherwise copy it from the jar to the hard disk.

    Please let me know if anybody faced similar issue earlier.
    It was working perfect earlier, but suddenly error started.

    No proper findings, but issue resolved.
    Problem i found that we got a domain change and service values were not refreshed until we apply new patch.
    So when we applied patch level 6 on BI WEBAPP& BI BASE S URL for ADS got refreshed and we faced the issue.
    After resetting the URL to new domain problem got resolved.

  • When downloading iTunes, I got a message about error writing to file and it told the file. Then it said to verify that you have access to that directory. I have no idea how to fix it. I could really use some help, please.

    I was trying to download iTunes on my computer, and while doing so, I got this message: Error writing to file: C:/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Apple/Apple Application Support/Apple Versions.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory. I have downloaded iTunes numerous times and I have never had this problem. If anyone knows what's going on, I would really appreciate the help.

    Well, there's definitely a mac and a Windows version. And you're at the right page. I think the problem is that someone forgot (or decided not to) to update the text at teh bottom of the page to have Mac and Windows.
    Just push the button, you'll get the Mac update no problem.

  • "Error writing to file" when installing Oracle9i

    I am fairly new to Oracle and have not been able to install Oracle 9i on my Redhat 7.2 box. In three attempts to install I have encountered the same error at some point, usually early on 5% or 10% into the install.
    The error is:
         "Error in writing to file /usr/oracle/product/9.2.0/olap/wrksht/wks.jar"
    However, it has not happened on the same file each time. I have stopped the installation of that component, but it encounters the same error on other files. I have tried redownloading the oracle disks and reinstalling, but to no avail. I read on one posting that Oracle needs to have glib2.2(rather than glib1.2) installed, so I downloaded it and will be trying that later today. If anyone has encountered this error and knows how to solve it I would appreciate the help. Below I have listed my computer configuration and I have attached the portion of the install log that identifies the error that takes place.
         Thanks

    This isnt the correct forum for this question. Use tags when posting code.  Post the contents of the .txt file and what unexpected characters you are getting.
