AppleTV: buggy, unreliable

I have been using AppleTV to stream Netflix mostly, but like being able to show my iPhoto pix and of course iTunes movies. I have encountered an number of bugs using Apple TV which are annoying and disappointing considering the high quality of most Apple products. These are 2 specific problems that continue to recur:
1. I get an error message which says either "Netflix is unavailable at this time" or "An error occurred loading this content, try again later." I might assume that there is a problem either with Netflix overloading or a problem with the Internet or my network, BUT fortunately, I also have a Panasonic Blu-ray player with a network adaptor and using that I can access my Netflix movies just fine. If AppleTV says "Can't load this content..." the Panasonic loads it okay.
2. Apple TV can't seem to be able to pick up a streaming movie where I left off half the time. I assume regarding Netflix that the point where I leave off viewing is stored at the Netflix site and not locally, but why can't Apple TV find it? My Panasonic disk player can always find it.
The problem with "An error occurred loading this content, try again later" error was discussed in this forum in a long thread and though there were various suggestions none of them fixed the problem. This issue was reported by multiple users. It has been a problem for some time but Apple hasn't supplied a fix as far as I can see. The failure to find where I left off is getting worse. There is also the problem of long hesitations in some movies, though I can't quantify that it seems much worse when I'm using Apple TV. What is my question? Are these known problems, is Apple working on them, and are there any workarounds? I have tried rebooting the AppleTv unit and that only works sometimes. The "Unavailable at this time..." thing fixes itself after a period of time, usually.
I love Apple TV, I like being able to access iTunes movies and Netflix and my iPhoto collection. But why is there all these problems?

I've maybe had that message once in the 7 months that i've had the device. It could be a combination of things causing it, I have heard others having the issue. When accessing Netflix it always seems to remember where I left off though.
Have you tried restarting your router, rebooting and/or restoring ATV? If you're on wifi, have you tried ethernet?

  • What is the best way to allow multiple presentations/presenters iOS devices to a video device(single projector)

I am sure there are several ways to do this but I am rather new to iProducts. The instructor wants to allow students to present either from their own devices or from a mac mini where the presentations had been sent to prior to the class.
At first glance it seemed that an AppleTV would work great for this but I have been told that AppleTV is unreliable when it comes to multiple iOS sources.(Likely trying it out anyways.)
The other method I am looking at is to either grant the class' roll access to a DropBox account or use a 3rd party attachment email service to get all the students presentations to one place. Then its a as simple as using Splashtop or some other remote desktop app/software. Only thing there is the instructor wants the students to use their OWN devices to control the mini/presentation. I can only assume this is a bad idea, but I really don't know.
I have heard but have been unable to confirm that the new mac minis can be controlled from an iPad without additional app downloads, is this the case?
I guess I am at the very start of putting this together but does anyone here have any thoughts or advice?
Also, just throwing this out there, I am a PC guy but seeing how easily Macs set up and integrate in commercial jobs is about to guide me to making a switch.

Sir, here is 10 points! This is the perfect solution for what we are trying to do. I am not sure if the instructor will want to replace their projector although I bet I'd be able to convince them that they'd spend just as much and get half the functionality trying to save the existing projector.
Do you know if Epson is working on a mirroring function? Or if any other company has some sort of dongle or box(and an app) to accomplish this with any brand projector? I am still searching for these answers somewhere online but likely coming up on a dead end.
Also, have you had any experience with AirServer or Reflections?
Thank you again for the article, very very informative!

  • HELP: License for Adobe Bridge!

    Hi,
I am trying to find information on Adobe Bridge's license. I am wondering if you can purchase this as a stand-alone for use as a DAM. Many of our non-creative departments require access to our assets so need a central management console everyone can login with.
We have been seriously looking at: http://www.assetbank.co.uk/demos/
However Id like to know if Bridge is capable.
Any help on people using it as an Asset Manager (for not just media files) I'd like to hear what your suggestions are compared to other DAM products out there.
    Much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Nick.

Bridge is an extremely buggy unreliable piece of software. I would not expend much effort trying to purchase it, standalone or otherwise.
Read this forum and you will get an earful!

  • ITunes match not syncing normal playlists correctly

I have iTunes match enabled on my computer and on my iOS device. I made a playlist that consists of 195 songs on my computer. I opened Music on my phone, and I see the playlist there with all 195 songs no problem. I open iTunes on my computer and delete a few songs down to 128. My iOS device still shows 195 songs.. I restart iTunes and my iOS device and iTunes still shows 128 songs, and my iOS device shows 195. I hit update iTunes Match on iTunes on my computer and all those songs I deleted are back and it is showing 195 songs on the computer now too. How do I update my playlist using iTunes Match? Is the service this buggy/unreliable?
I also noticed I have reset my play count on iTunes on the computer and it is all back too. It is like any changes on iTunes on the computer are not updating to iTunes Match.

I am also having problems with smart playlists on OS7 iphone 4s with mountain Lion on my mac
I have two smart playlists, one for music not played in 6 months, the other for zero plays, the other criteria for the lists are media type 'music' and track time ' less than 15 minutes.
These two playlists have 619 items and 108 items respectively in my mac but on the phone it shows 2962 items (for both lists) and a cloud symbol next to the track - although scrolling down, there are some tracks that do not have the cloud symbol - these look like the original 619 and 108 in the lists
Other smart playlists are fine and appear to be not affected

  • Why do we keep a specific Arch64 subform?

Arch x86_64 has been mainstream for more than 3 years now.
And for at least more than the last two years, it's even more mainstream than i686.
Then why do we keep a specific Arch64 subforum?
And we have it together with some other architectures (i586, ppc) that not even a handful of people use them?

It seems odd to me, maintaining a forum for an entirely separate architecture simply because of 3 proprietary packages.
It is not that they are proprietary.
It is that they are either-or/and buggy, unreliable, do not respect personal data and privacy, and for more than a year now have extremely well-behaved replacements.
    For example:
    - wine
    ----> buggy
    ----> unreliable
----> has excellent replacement -> VirtualBox
    - skype
    ----> buggy
    ----> unreliable
----> no respect for personal data
    ----> no respect for privacy
----> all your calls are being monitored-recorded
----> the same for all your file transfers
----> the same for all your chats
    Why?
Because your consumer habits-preferences are worth billions of euros to the content-making companies (ie RIAA music studios and MPAA movie studios) so that they can produce more target-oriented material.
----> has excellent replacements -> pidgin, kmess, amsn etc.

  • Crucial M500 960GB Dead, no longer seen in Bios?

I have a Crucial M500 960GB SSD drive that I think might have died. I've used it in my desktop since late 2013. The drive on two occasions this past 4 months just vanishes from my bios. I would have to reset the pc like 20 times or more for it to show up. The last time it happened I figured out if I pulled the PC power cord from the PC and held the power button down to drain the residual power in the PSU and the motherboard, this would sometimes allow the drive to be scene on bootup. The bios no longer shows the device as being attached. So I trouble shooted this by installing the SSD in another completely separate pc with also a different sata cable. No dice as that pc also doesn't show a drive attached. I then today bought and tried a Startech USB 3.0 to 2.5 sata HDD/SSD cable thinking maybe I could access my SSD through my laptop via USB 3.0. This didn't work will the crucial, but I did verify my laptop could read a Sandisk Extreme 60gb drive SSD drive I had sitting on a shelf. My crucial m500 came with firmware MU02 and I believe I updated it a year ago or so to MU03. I remember reading something about if the firmware wasn't updated the drive could possibly stop working because of write cycles or something like that. I see crucial is already on firmware MU05 for this drive. Anybody have any ideas as to what my issue might be. DesktopI7-3770k MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard16gb Crucial Ballistix RamXFX R9 290 Seasonic X-series 850 Gold PSUWindows 8.1 64 bit  Other Desktop I tried it onI5- 4430MSI Z87 MPower16gb Crucial Ballistix RamXFX R9 290Seasonic X-Series 850 GoldWindows 7 64 bit

I also have a 1TB crucial SSD M500 or M550, the one with 960 GB and crypto support. I have been using it for less than a year.Unfortunately it appears to be extremely buggy, unreliable and slow.Luckily I bought it as a second drive on my MBP (in place of the DVD player).I use it for hosting virtual machines and backing up my primary system disk.I experienced issues with that drive several times, always the same kind: at first the drive disappears. This disk utility diagnostics finds the disk but says the partition/filesystem is badly damaged and needs to be repaired. I suspect it experienced some random error, like bit flipping, which for this size is actually not surprising.Last time, instead of running the repair or reformatting, I waited for a bit, and reran the disk utility test.Surprisingly, the test ended up passing with no fail.I was almost happy not to have to backup/restore but tried again the test procedure, just to be sure. This time it failed with another error than the first time. So I tried another time and it failed with yet another error!!I must stress out the fact that I used the clicked "verify" not the the "repair" button of this disk utility, which to me means, nothing should be changed during the check pass. Last but not least, the performances of this disk are disappointing: When running vmware fusion with vm image on crucial drive, fusion is awfully slow. This is surprising because the crucial appears as connected on a SATAIII 6Gb/s, while the primary is only connectd at 3Gb/s, but crucial is MUCH slower. Actually, booting with this drive as 2d drives slows down the boot noticeably compared to a boot with only one drive. All this is very disappointing...

  • Why are "Signatures" so Unreliable and Buggy?

    Using OS 10.5.4
Ok, why are the Mail "Signatures" so buggy and unreliable? I opened Mail today and when I go new Message my signature do not show up. They worked fine yesterday.
I went into the Preferences and under "All Signatures" it shows that I have 2 signatures, but when I click on my 2 different mail accounts (below "All Signatures") the signatures are missing.
I didn't change anything to make them not work so what's up?
Also when I create a new message I can't choose a signature from the little drop down in the email. Why is that?
Very frustrated signatures have never worked properly.
    Thanks

Your signatures are stored as webarchive files in your <home>/Library/Mail/Signatures folder. There should be a webarchive file for each signature and they in turn are referenced in a SignaturesByAccount.plist file within the same folder. It is possible that the plist file has become corrupted and/or the signature files are corrupted. Move the SignaturesByAccount.plist file to the desktop and then re-create your signatures to see if that resolves the problem.

  • RV320 - Buggy, slow performance, unreliable POS

    Hi
This has been a frustrating experience to say the least. I've spent way too much time trying to get this thing to work properly, to no avail...
    1. Performance gets slow (EXTREMELY slow) when the RV320 uptime is more than 24 hours. Reboot it and it runs acceptable. This clearly indicates some kind of errors with the firmware.
    2. Buggy UI (invalid SSL certificate, Chrome won't even let you admin this thing). The source code for the UI is truly horrible, but i'm not surprised. I'm surprised it works at all.
    3. No firmware updates for OVER A YEAR now (but RV320 hasn't been EOLed). Release notes mentions known issues, but Cisco clearly isn't interested in fixing them.
    4. Slow performance (both WAN and LAN) as mentioned above, can't even stream movies over LAN. I'm seeing 30-60 Mbps throughput over local network, when it's supposed to be a gigabit router... (Yes, I've turned off all security features which could slow things down such as SPI, etc). Yes, I've tried MTU sizes in multiples of 28, I've tried everything.
Cisco promises performance, security and reliability for RV320. But in my experience, you can only pick one of the three.
I've heard somewhere on this forum that a alpha firmware is available, please send it to me and I'll try it out.

With reservations, I tried this router.  The reservations came from reading of the obvious resource leak in the firmware.  I bought it anyway.  I get exactly the same behavior.  I have to reboot each morning.  Not a solution.  I have a VoIP phone system also; I cannot afford to lose Internet connectivity.  I updated to the 1.1.1.19 firmware of 2014-12.  Didn't help.
I have had the same DLink gateway for about ten years, but, I need something faster now. It actually has some better features and a better user interface than this Cisco unit.
BTW, I can't connect to it with Chrome; Chrome login just return to the login screen; I have to use Firefox.
It is a shame that Cisco put their name on products such as this.  I have had the same experience with other Cisco SMB products (Did someone say Linksys?).  Their commercial products are very nice.
I decided not to frustrate myself as an engineer trying to make it work; I got an RMA to return it,.  Haven't had it but about a week.
On the upside, I got about 60Mbps throughput on my Cox connection, which is 2x what I could get with my old DLink.

  • Has anyone else noticed how buggy and unreliable Safari has become?

I could barely even submit this question from within Safari, without reopening the page in  a fresh tab. What is going on there? It seems Apple is starting to abandon it's high standards for this Web Browser.
I should add, that I have two completely different Apple Computers, and this poor experience is exhibited across both of them.

Complaining without seeking a solution is not really going to get you anywhere.
But to answer your question, no problems with Safari and I have never had.

  • Why is Creative Cloud so buggy and unreliable?

Not only that, but try to get any meaningful assistance on weekends.   It seems that Adobe, in spite of the ridiculous prices it charges, only owrks part-time.  Some of us actually have to work on weekends and the inability to get real assistance is crippling. Some Adobe products are good, but their arrogant treatment of their clients will not do them any good.

While it is true that regional support offices answer their phones during regular business hours Mon-Fri, on-line chat is available 24/7.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the Cloud.  I haven't had any major problems with CS6 apps either.
Exactly what problems are you having?
Which products are not working for you?
Which operating system do you use?
The more details you provide, the better chance you'll have of getting a solution.

  • Possible to stream movies from external HD- Airport Extreme- AppleTV?

    Hi Folks,
I'm new to these boards so 'hi'. I have looked all over Google and various other forums for this answer but haven't received anything definitive.
I'm basically trying to find out if it's possible for me to connect an external hard drive to my Airport Extreme Base Station, and have that stream movies to my Apple TV?
The main reason for wanting to do this is my only computer is a MacBook Pro which only has a 120gig hard drive on it, and I only typically have 20-30gig free at any given time after applications etc. I want to store all my movies in one location, was thinking of buying a 1TB hard drive and connect as above.
I don't want to shell out for the hard drive if this won't work though. I'm frustrated at myself because this is what I thought the internal hard drive of the Apple TV did and thats why I bought the 160GB version, but everywhere I read people say DO NOT store movies on the Apple TV because it's really buggy. So what is the 160GB??
Any help, guidance, and tips would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Frank Drebin

AppleTV can only access media that iTunes is aware of by virue of them being added to it's library.
The files that iTunes knows about can be on any drives that your Macbook can access, internal, external or newtork based.
AppleTV relies on iTunes to fetch data either to sync or stream and cannot connect to external or network drives itself.
A drive attached to your base station may well work but it will depend on your network being up to the task - iTunes must be running, fetch the data from the drive across your network, then send it to AppleTV.
AppleTV is not designed as a storage device. It has 2 modes of media playback - synced and streamed. Syncing media stores a copy or mirror of a media file on it so it can be used when iTunes is not running - the 160GB lets you store many more media file copies thn the 40GB. For streaming, which iTunes is required for, and which transfers data on the fly for AppleTV from the computer or connected drive via itunes, the size of the AppleTv drive is irrelevant.
While what you want to do would probably work, for streaming to run smootly without dropouts the network would need to be up to it - in most cases it will, in some it won't.
Your other option of course is to store most of your movies on an external USB drive and plug that into the MBP when you want to stream or sync to AppleTv. You just need to change iTunes Preferences to not copy files into it's library thus not filling up the MBP drive. Same method you'd use for adding files from a drive attached to your base station. An alternative is to create a new itunes library completely on an external drive.

  • Apple TV is not connecting to Netflix and is acting buggy.

After the recent Vimeo update.  I can access iTunes Movies, TV Shows, etc. but I can't sign into iTunes, I get a message saying "Can't sign into iTunes because Apple TV can't get the network time."  Further AppleTV keeps flashing back and forth from being connected to Wifi and not connected, it's not our network, 5-10 other devices are working rock solid.
Any ideas if there is a known bug with the latest update?

Yes I've rebooted the device several times.  I'm not able to try Ethernet where it's located, but I would be surprised if it were interferrence because it has been working flawlessly in the same location for weeks.  Plus I can access other content in the device without issue, previews of movies, TV shows, etc. but I can't purchase them because it won't accept my Apple ID... throws an error message about the Time.  Can't access Youtube, Vimeo, Netflix, etc.
I'm a software developer and this feels like a buggy roll out of an update...

  • Why is the mail application so unreliable?

I have made my move to a Mac laptop this year after being overrun with iOS devices in my house. The MacBook Air I have is an awesome machine. One of the main things I got it for is for business productivity. The simplest of things I should be able to do is communicate over email, but the native mail application is so unreliable it is embarrassing. I have a yahoo account that I was able to setup fine enough. Every time I send an email it is a gamble as to whether or not it is sent or not. That is unacceptable. The mail accounts I setup on my iOS devices seem to be bulletproof and it boggles my mind that the mail client on the Mac OS is so bad. I wasted time with the support lines on several occassions and all they could tell me is tht sometimes after I send an emal it can get stuck in between sending and getting off the yahoo server so there is no record it has been sent and no copy in drafts. What an awful answer. It has gotten to the point where the only way I am confident to use email is on my iPhone or through the web browser on the yahoo site. I am really unhappy about this and would like to know if other people see the same problem.

I'm spending hours with the techies on my server, which is the cable company we contract with. First I kept getting the message that Mail didn't recognize the server but it would connect when I clicked Connect. Then it started letting me receive messages but not send. Now I can't do either, and the company has no help for me. I have run the disk utility verify and repair options and it tells me all is well.
I don't want my emails anywhere on the web, just here at home. The cable techs have gone over and over the technicalities on their end and have concluded that Apple Mail is the problem. I find evidence of that in much online grumbling, but here I find only self defense.
    How could you help me?
    1. Admit that your software has bugs. Tell me some things I could try to get my email working again. I'm finding such protocol elsewhere on the web but it all seems to relate to earlier versions of OSX.
    2. Show me where I could upgrade to a less buggy version than 6.2. This is my second laptop in the past year (first one stolen) and each had different problems with Mail. The first one kept losing mail. Messages would come in and then be gone when I'd go to answer them. Important items I would not delete. That's not happening with this one -- it just keeps losing connection with my server.
Please stop pretending that anyone who has problems with Mail is afflicted in some way. There are problems, and I'm very shocked that Apple, who used to be one of the good guys (at least in my book), seems to to be stuck on a policy of self righteousness. Guys, your halo is tarnished with Apple Mail -- time to realize that and cope.

  • Unreliable USB Airport Disk

I thought the Airport USB disk would be great - so far it is nothing but frustrating and unreliable.
At times I find I am unable to see any disks at all. I'll click the disk in finder and will simply see "connecting..." in the finder window - but it never connects and the lists stays blank.
Other times I will see the disk show up in the finder window, but as soon as I open the disk I get a blank finder window with a never-ending spinning wheel at the bottom right of the finder window.
It never loads or shows the directory. If I go back to view the base station (in finder) it will say "Connected as guest"
In both situations, clicking "Connect As..." in finder windows does nothing at all.
In airport disk utility I have enable file sharing "with a base station password" with guest access "read and write".
Is it simply that Airport Disk is buggy and not ready for real use - or am I missing the proper sequence of doing things? I have yet to figure out why sometimes it works, and others it does not.
I've tried powering everything off, and powering up in this sequence: 1. USB HDD 2. Aiport Base Station 3. iMac -- and I still cannot connect to the drive.
I look forward to your suggestions and comments!
    Thanks!

unfortunately I found this out the hard way too.
I have 2 western digital TB (1,000 GB) external drives.
At first I could not access them reliably from a AEBS (gigabit).
unplugging the AEBS and plugging it back in seemed to help for a few minutes, but nothing I could count on.
I discovered that if I hooked up the drive to my comp and formatted in extended or extended (journaled), it does just fine when reconnected to the AEBS.
NOTE: if you have a TB (1,000 GB) drive, you will need to partition it into at least 2 partitions, then repartition back into 1 before it will format that size reliably in 1 big space.
if, however, you would like more than 1 partition, feel free to make as many as you would like.
I have not played around with the amount of partitions the AEBS can recognise, but feel free to experiment and let us know!
    good luck.

  • AppleTV v Roku - So far, Roku wins

I switched from Roku3 to AppleTV 4 months ago.   I regret the decision as I have found AppleTV to be buggy and constantly drops the wireless network . Also, the basic functionality and user interface is worse (which is surprising for Apple products).
With Roku, the subtitles can be turned on or off at the time of movie or series selection. With AppleTV, you have to go all the way out to settings and subtitles are either on for all actions or off.  Which is a total pain as I need subtitles for Danish TV series but not for watching US content.  What AppleTV shows in terms of descrtiptive content on netflix is far less than what Roku shows.  With Roku, I get much more information about the movie or series I am selecting (cast, plot, country or orgin, etc).
I don't like that I have to back all the way out of what I am watching to turn off AppleTV.
About the only advantage to AppleTV is that I can access my MacBook content but as I do that rarely, I juse netflix mostly and it is constantly telling me that netflix is unavailable until I reset or restore. It is possible that my AppleTV unit is just defective (other than my 2010 iPod, I have yet to buy an apple product that was not defective and needed to be replaced ( iphone, ipad, macbook, shuffle, nano - seriously!!!!! every one has failed in the first months) I really think that Roku is the better product.

If you are unhappy with the Apple TV and still within the return period, simply return it.  If too late to return it, sell it and go back to the Roku, that obviously serves your needs better.
What was the reason for switching from the Roku to the ATV to begin with?  Seems like it as an uninformed or simply a bad decision.
