Appleworks 6/no pictures

For first time I had trouble opening pictures, got only blue square w/? in center. Sent email telling them and got this reply:
"Hi Beverly,
We're sorry you're having trouble.
Appleworks is a discontinued mail program; not entirely sure what the quirks of it are, but they’ve replaced it with newer software.
It's seems likely this is the reason you're having some trouble viewing some of our images.
Updating your software is the first step! Thanks for your interest in Tasting Table.
All the best, Nick"
Anyone know what they're talking about. Never had trouble before their site!!!
Hopefully,
Beverly

The reply doesn't appear to come from Apple.

  • Appleworks the big picture?

As a classroom Geography teacher, I very often make big charts in Appleworks(eg 4 pages across and 5 down etc). I can pull a piece of clipart or photo over the total number of pages, When I print out I can trim the pages and make one big chart. I know Appleworks is being replaced by pages but cannot see how something like this can be done in Pages.
    Any ideas
    Thanks
    Dave

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Dave
iWork, not just Pages, was announced a "building the successor to AppleWorks" but it's not there yet. Until iWork contains spreadsheet, database, draw & paint modules/applications, most of us won't consider iWork a replacement for AppleWorks. In the meantime, I use AppleWorks for what it does & iWork for what it does.

  • Appleworks' pictures are brighter than Pages'

Trying to future-proof all my old Appleworks .cwk documents, I open them in Pages and save them as Pages documents.
    Fine.
Except that the pictures within the old Appleworks documents are much better than the same in Pages - deeper, truer and more vivid colours.
I can successfully Edit/Copy a picture in Appleworks and then Paste it over the 'same' picture in the Pages document and so restore the former glory.
But I've lots of documents with lots of pictures within them - historical portraits etc.
Why are the Pages' pictures so disappointingly flat?
And is there any way to have them all of the same quality as those of Appleworks without Copy/Pasting across each one individually?
On advice from there I've moved this question from the Appleworks forum. Thanks Barry.

That's somewhat unusual. If you want to future-proof your documents, you should preferably save them in a format that has a high probability of being readable in 15-20 years' time, e.g. Word doc, Open document or PDF. We have no idea for how long the present version of Pages documents will be readable.

  • How do I move a graphic-box in a document I imported from AppleWorks?

I imported a book which I wrote in AppleWorks without problems into Pages '08. On one page of this book I had created a box, using the graphics tool, and moved it to the back so I could read the text inside it. It is now in the Pages '08 version of my book, but because of editing and additional writing which I've done, it appears on page 295, not 297 where it belongs. In AppleWorks I could simply select it and drag it into place. In Pages '08 I can't figure out how to select it. It's just there.
    Help desperately needed.

Here is an AppleScript which, in a single call will
    • extract the embedded picture files
    • strip the annoying description of the 'background' pictures from the Index.xml file.
So, we may open the Pages document, it will be free of the oddity and the picture files are available in the folder "importés_sétropmi" on the desktop.
    --(SCRIPT recupPictures]
Save the script as an Application (Bundle Application if you want to use it on a MacIntel)
    Store it on the Desktop.
Drag and drop the icon of a Pages document imported from AppleWorks on the script's icon.
The script will move the embedded picture files in a folder named "importés_sétropmi" on the desktop.
Then it will strip the Index.xml file from the block of datas describing the embedded pictures.

  • How can I convert my Appleworks 6 word processor and spreadsheets files to Pages and Numbers for OS 10.9?

My disc drive on my 6 year old MacBook died.  I bought an iMac with OS10.9, but it will not allow me to open Appleworks files from my backup drive.  Does anyone know of a method to transfer or open  Appleworks 6 files in Pages or Numbers for OS 10.9?  I need those files.
    Thanks

    Hello,
    > It coped much better with my Draw documents than the older version
Normally, I have added many functionnalities, retrieving the bitmap, gradient, ... But there remains some problem when a group/frame shares some shapes and a picture or when a shape crosses differents pages, the result can be become bad, ...
    > a number of lines missing on page 3
I suspect there are here, ie. if you select in page 3 the big gray square with two ellipses and remove it, there seem to reappear ( I do not know why this square insists to hide the other shapes even when I put it in background, ....)
    > the lines are very much thicker than they should be
All objects are thicker than they should be, mainly because I need to create a embedded Odg for each shapes. This will change in LibreOffice 4.3 because we have added in the parent library of libmwaw, functions to create shapes directly ; at least for line, rectangle, ellipse, probably not for other shapes...
    > I can add that to my page when it gets out of beta, (Perhaps you could announce it in this forum as it is relevant to AW and I don't want to keep checking the LO website.)
Ok, I will try to add a message when LibreOffice 4.2 will appear ( note: as I only write an extension used in LibreOffice, I also do not keep checking the LO website, I only check now and then that all is working ).

  • Printing date in the actual picture?

Hi, I have iPhoto on two machines. One older and one newer. However, I cannot figure out how to save an image with the date -in- the image. My wife wants to print photos that included the date taken on the picture. Is there a way I can do this in iPhoto?
Our old camera automatically printed the date in the image, but the new one seemingly does not. The file has the information on the date and time taken, but we cannot figure out how to get that information onto the image itself.
    Help?
    Thanks,
    -Josh2

Josh2, hi, do you have AppleWorks?
I just tried it, if you don't have too many photos to add dates to...
Open AppleWorks, click on the Drawing Starting Point. Go up to File>Insert, locate the photo you wish to date, Then click on the top left button on the tool bar, it looks like A on a graph paper background. Figure out how to choose your font color, adjust your text frame to the proper size, type the date and any comments. Click Save up in the File Menu. I made some cutesy prints. "Don't we clean up Good?" That sort of thing.
My Kodak digital has the date on photo option , it has just saved me money. Get out your instructions. If it can do it, it will tell you how to set it.

  • Problems with AppleWorks drawing docs under Snow Leopard

Since I installed Snow Leopard, I've encountered two major problems:
(Problem 1) AppleWorks gets corrupted when dragging a picture file (.jpg or .png) from the desktop into a drawing document. Various dialogs (e.g. "Format : Document..." or "Format : Ruler : Settings ..." or "Options : Object Size ...") become uneditable. These dialogs will display blank boxes instead of the given object settings, and nothing can be entered into these boxes. AppleWorks must be shut down and restarted in order to continue work.
(Problem 2) When a formula (i.e. an equation) has been created in a MathType window, selected and copied, it takes ages to make AppleWorks the active application (spinning rainbow coloured ball appears and keeps spinning for a long while). Thereafter, it takes another century to get the formula appearing in the AppleWorks document when selecting the command "Edit : Paste".
Everything worked still fine under Leopard; under Snow Leopard it's a desaster.
    p.s.
I've produced thousands of work sheets for my Maths teachings using the Drawing module of AppleWorks in combination with MathType (Design Science). Now I'm stuck since there is no decent successor of AppleWorks available:
    * iWork doesn't feature a drawing module.
    * EazyDraw doesn't collaborate with MathType (i.e. no OLE; inserted formulae cannot be edited by double-clicking).
    * OpenOffice doesn't collaborate with MathType.
    * Micro$oft Office doesn't feature a drawing module.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't use AppleWorks as much as I used to & I've never had a need to use MathType, but I just tried dragging 3 images - a .png, a .tiff & a .jpg - to a new AppleWorks draw document. I had no problems resizing them using Format > Scale by percent & I had no problems using any of the other dialog boxes you mention.
Some basic troubleshooting you might try:
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them. You should do this step anytime AppleWorks crashes or you force quit it.
The slowness is likely the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.
Could you send me a copy of one of these worksheets? Perhaps I can see if I can easily duplicate one in Pages/Numbers/Keynote. Even though iWork doesn't have a draw app, all of the apps do have basic drawing capabilities.

  • Where can I get Appleworks?

Recently I had to replace the hard drive on my 333 mhz iMac (running OS 9.1). When I got it back, I realized that the Appleworks application, which had come pre-installed, was now gone. Where can I get a version of Appleworks to run now (and which version is it)? I don't suppose it would be on any of the disks that came with the iMac when I first bought it (when it had OS 8.5).
While I'm at it, where can I get a version of Word to use? I have the Student/Teacher Edition of Office 2004 on my iBook, but that needs at least OS 10.2. Is there an older version for OS 9? I think that Office 2001 is the one to use but it's kind of expensive.
    Thanks in advance.

Check the System Install CD. AppleWorks v5.0.3 should be on there. If so, you should be able to custom install.
You may need to use TomeViewer.

  • Cannot open Appleworks at all

When I try to open Appleworks it doesn't do anything. It pretends like it will open but then doesn't. I can't tell where it is getting hung up. I tried to use Peggy's advice and delete the preferences but that didn't work. I don't have it on my dock. Any help would be great. Thanks!

For others reference this is the original post I started with from Peggy..
--The best, first step in trouble-shooting a misbehaving application is to delete its preference files. Preference files often become corrupted through no fault of the user - it just happens. Although it sounds scary or drastic to do this, it can only help the application. When any application is launched, it looks for its preference files. If it doesn't find any (just like the very first time you started AppleWorks) it will build new ones.
First, quit AppleWorks if it is running. In all instances, you don't want to trash the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bar. You will need to reset any preferences you had changed, but AppleWorks' preferences are simple.
]•In OS X you want to move the AppleWorks preferences found in HD/Users/username/Library/Preferences/AppleWorks & the com.apple.appleworks.plist found in ~/Library/Preferences/ to the Trash, then empty the Trash & restart AppleWorks.
]•In OS 8-9, the preference files to Trash are found in HD/System Folder/Preferences/AppleWorks. Then empty the Trash & restart AppleWorks.
Should AppleWorks still not work as before or expected, the next step is to make sure AppleWorks and the necessary support files are installed and where AppleWorks "expects" to find them.
]It is not uncommon for users to move the AppleWorks application from the AppleWorks 6 folder to a more convenient location, separating it from its necessary folders - AppleWorks Essentials, Clippings & Starting Points. The AppleWorks 6 application & the above mentioned folders must be in a folder named AppleWorks 6. Not keeping all these "parts" together will
"break" translators, spell check, updaters, etc. If you do want to have AppleWorks available in another spot, make an alias from the File menu and put the alias wherever you'd like. You can even have several aliases.
]If you cannot find all of the "parts" or have inadvertently deleted some, you will need to reinstall AppleWorks using the "Easy Install" option. There is no need to remove the existing AppleWorks files, the installer will merely install what is missing. --
I am quite puzzled by the fact that my harddrive is full. I use the laptop mainly for the internet. I am a stay at home mom so I don't have huge data on my computer. I guess it came with like 60 G and I only have about 4 left. That is crazy to me. Where did it all go??? I have about a years worth of pictures and maybe 100 songs but the only program I have added is the full version of photoshop which isn't even a Gig. I seriously have saved maybe 20 documents on this thing. I run Quicken and use the calender but it just seems so crazy that it would be full already!!!!

  • Custom "Lock Screen Picture" not functional?

Hi, the Remote Desktop manual method of changing the lock screen picture still doesn't work for me.
    Am I doing something wrong?
Method from Apple Remote Desktop Manual:
1 Create a picture using a graphics program, such as AppleWorks.
2 Save the picture in PICT, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, or any other QuickTime-compatible static image
    format.
QuickTime-compatible movies or QuickTime VR objects cannot be used.
3 Name the picture “Lock Screen Picture”.
4 Copy the “Lock Screen Picture” file to /Library/Preferences/ on the client computer.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The method listed in the manual has never worked and still doesn't, as far as know, with 3.1, though I haven't tested it with 3.1 myself yet. The only working solution I have found is to swap out the Lock.jpg file located in
    "/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/LockScreen.app/Contents/Resources".

  • Snow Leopard and Appleworks not working well together ...

Still a dedicated fan of Appleworks mostly because I use the vector drawing program for my design business. But, even though it works in OSX.6, it is much changed. The drag-drop images from web sites print out in dot-matrix quality. Every clicked on object becomes a "grouped picture". Therefore the object has to be ungrouped and then regrouped. The resize and rotate tools don't work. If there were other great drawing programs out there I would consider them, but I am considering going back to OSX.5. Also finding that some web sites don't like OSX.6 with Safari and my HP printers have terrible quality now and HP will not support Snow Leopard and older printers. Any other Appleworks users having problems? Thanks.

This may fix the resize & rotate issues.
AppleWorks changes the resolution of all graphic formats except PICT to 72 dpi. There are a couple of things you can do improve the print quality of images.
    1. Turn on Fractional Character widths in Preferences > General > Topic: Text. This is a text setting, but it does improve the print quality of images.
    2. Open the image in Preview or GraphicConverter & Save As... a PICT to use in AppleWorks.
PICT is generally the best format to use for inserting or pasting into AppleWorks. I find the resulting graphic can be resized somewhat & the resulting saved AW file is much smaller than if using JPEG or TIFF.

  • How do you wrap text around an image in Appleworks Word Processing?

I need to do figure this out as soon as possible as it’s for a piece of college work due next week, so I’ll appreciate any answers you have to offer. All the help (online and otherwise) I’ve come across instructs me to go to non-existent ’Options’ or ’Tools’ menus - all I have is File, Edit, Format, Text, Outline, Table, Window and Help, none of which has an obvious solution. Ctrl-clicking on the picture only gives Help or Scale By Percent. Cheers for your help.

    Trinity Bourne wrote:
When I go to 'text wrap' it asks me for a gutter number (which don't really understand). It doesn't matter what number I type in it always says 'invalid number' and won't wrap the text.
"gutter" is a printers term that refers to the amount of (white) space between columns, or in this case between the edge of the floating object and the text wrapped around it. AppleWorks default value for this is 5 points (5/72 inch).
AppleWorks should accept any value from 0 to 255 for the Gutter, and should round decimal values to the nearer integer value.
In the example, the selected image (top left rectangle) had been set to "regular" wrap and the gutter left at 5 points. The rectangle to the right is set to "regular" and the gutter increased to 15 points.
The oval on the right has the same settings (regular, 5 point gutter) as the selected rectangle; the one on the left is set to "irregular" wrap with the gutter setting left at 5 points.
The left justified text in the example aligns itself along the right of the objects according to the regular/irregular setting: irregular follows the contours of the image, regular the outline of the 'box' containing the image. Irregular is available only for objects you have created using the AppleWorks Draw tools—imported/pasted images will include a white background filling the rest of the box.
Note the lack of text between the left margin and the left edge of the selected rectangle. this is due to the space between margin and object is too small to accomodate any of the words (currently in the space between the two rectangles) that would fall into that space.
Regarding the "invalid number" error message you are getting—I suspect this is a corrupted preferences issue. Some possible solutions are discussed in this thread, located by clicking the "more options" link in the search box (above right) then searching the AppleWorks Forum for "invalid number" (including the quotation marks).

  • Picture files open in OpenOffice only.

The xls files i downloaded from the internet will not open in Appleworks 6.
I downloaded OpenOffice, and now any picture file automativally open in OpenOffice only.
Before I installed OpenOffice, all of my picture files automattically opened in Photoshop 11.
Why do my pictures (files), regardless of being in jpg, tif, etc., open in Open Office instead of Photoshop??
I can now open them in Pshop by dragging them to Pshop icon, but if I just click on the picture file icon,
they allways again open in OpenOffice.
Its mad, and I am considerring I have to get rid of OpenOffice.
    Any sugestions would be appreciated.
      Apologies for shocking grammar!
    Thanks, Karel.

Click once on any JPG picture and hit command-i to open the Info pane.
Expand the 'Open with' section if necessary. Select Photoshop in the drop-down menu and then click 'Change all'.
    Repeat for other file formats.

  • Vanishing pictures in the database

I have an AppleWorks (6.2.9) database which contains some multi-media containers with pictures.
One picture in the database (usually the same) disapears regularly. Somtimes it is gone after scrolling through the database sometimes after reopening. In rare occasions it even reapears (so the data seames to be somewhere).
    This happens with all layouts.
Putting this (or an other) picture again in container does not help for long, soon it will be "lost" again. Moreover putting the picture again, sometimes has the effect that the next picture(s) also get "lost".
Also Appleworks crashes in irregular intervals when opening this data base. The database then is lost I have to go back to an backup.
Or if I want to use this database for a serial-letter (right English word?) AppleWorks crashes.
Deleting the preferences had no effect.
And I do not use an Unicode keyboard-Setup.
The database contains about 150 "files" with one-two pictures each. The pictures are JPEGs of about 720x720 Pixels. The database file is about 10MB in total.
If there is no "solution", is there an more recent Database application I can buy that can import (content, layouts, ...) of the Appleworks database (Filemaker...)? Continue like that becomes to dangerous for me, it crashes to frequent and there is a lot of work in this database.
    Thanks

    Hello
The AppleWorks database containing multimedia fields are highly prone to corruption.
It seems that your database IS corrupted.
My point of vue is that for important tasks assuming multimedia fields it would be better to use something like FileMaker.
Alas, only embedded datas may be transferred from AW database to FM one.
The two apps where created by Claris, they have some resemblances in the patterns but the functionnalities are highly different.
Switch from AW database to FM one would not be trivial but when it will be done, you will have a stable tool.
Maybe one day iWork will offer a database application able to import AW database but, at this time it is simply a dream.

  • Appleworks  putting text and photo in an email

I am a new jack to the Mac world.
I have been trying to place a saved online photo within the body text of an email I wish to send out. So that the photo appears within the body text of the email when opened.
I do not want to send the picture as an attachment.

This isn't really an AppleWorks question, more of a Leopard one (or Mail and Address Book): however -
A picture added to an email is an attachment. If you place it within the text, most modern email clients will display it within the text: but a few will simply display it as an attachment with an icon. This is a matter of the capabilities of the receiving email client, or how it is set up by its user, and there isn't anything you can do to change that.
