Applications Won't Stay Active

Ever since I installed Leopard, all of my applications like Safari, Microsoft Word and Mail deselect themselves after about 15 seconds. For example, if I am typing an email, the screen suddenly goes slightly grey and I have to click on the open application to bring it back to life. Any suggestions?

I have about 2000 pictures and the apps that can't be moved to the SD card along with some music I haven't moved yet.  I have available about 4GB of space left.  I wanted to save space on the phone and use the 58GB available on the card. The music that's on the card will stay but the apps won't

  • Menu bar items won't stay active

For some reason when I try to activate some menu bar items, they won't stay active long enough for me to write or click a button. For example, when I click on the Fantasical calendar app, I can write and schedule a calendar event, but when I launch say the small window in the menu bar for Day One diary, it won't stay open. When I use the keyboard shortcut to activate Alfred, the app launcher, that window also won't stay open in order for me to write my input. I hope this is coming across clear. If need be I can do a screen capture to illustrate the problem. This is very annoying, and I really need to fix it. I ran disk repair a couple of times, but I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?

Okay, I figure what was causing the problem. I used the Console app log of OS X and it revealed that app called Dragon Express was stopping other menu bar apps from staying open. The problem was driving me crazy because it kept me from using some apps like Alfred and the QuickNotes feature in SOHO Notes. Anyway, just thought I'd post this just in case anyone has the problem.

  • I have created a second user on my imac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Anyone else have this problem?

I have created a second user on my iMac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Everything works fine with the main user. Anyone else have this problem?

    Hi again, ;o)
I found this advice in another thread (here), which you might find helpful...
Unregistering the iMac from .Mac syncing and re-registering it (replacing the computer's information with the .Mac information) resolved the issue.
The .Mac sync information was Reset (i.e. recopied in it's entirety) from the MacBook (the 'good' computer) to .Mac prior to unregistering and re-registering the iMac, so a fresh copy of the sync could be loaded from .Mac to the iMac.
I hope this helps the others who have had this problem.

  • Applications won't stay downloaded on SD Card

After the update, all my applications I moved to the SD Card were "shadowed" out on my screen.  When I clicked to open the applications, it would tell me the app didn't exist.  I took the card out, put it in my computer, copied the card to my desktop and reformatted the card.  Then transferred all the apps back to the card and it still didn't work.  I then had to uninstall all the applications and reinstall and transfer back to the SD card.  One by one the apps started to delete themselves from the SD card again.  The applications will not stay downloaded on the SD card.  Is anyone having this issue after the update?

  • Firefox sync won't stay active, requires initial setup every time!

I have three computers using firefox sync, all macs. I set up my first firefox sync normally, then installed sync on the other two computers using my login credentials. Then I noticed that as I made bookmark changes that the other computers weren't updating or were updating incorrectly. I go to 'tools' and notice that sync isn't even on! It says 'set up sync' So I go through the steps again and I'm syncing again. The problem is that I'm having to set up again, and again, and again. Somehow sync is not staying active. Always 'set up sync' .

When I am THERE it works. I can add the printer, print to it, do anything I want and its fine until I walk away.
Eventually delete the printer from the list and add from scratch using the IP-Printer option.
Also check the network settings of your Mom's Mac. Make sure that your network is on top of the list and eventually disable "Ask to join new networks"

  • Application Won't Stay Hidden

This is so basic but I can't find the solution anywhere.
DVD Studio Pro all versions for as far back as I can remember have this really annoying habit of popping up in front of any other open application multiple times through out the burning process. As an editor, I tend to use DVDsp as a background application and wish it would stay that way so I can continue with other projects. Does anyone know how or where I can configure those types of settings?
Chime in if this has annoyed you as well.

On the contrary, when I burn I don't want any other applications running.

  • My Applications won't stay in the Dock

Since I downloaded lion, I couldn't keep any applications on my dock. Except the ones that were already on there.. I tried to keep my firefox on it and wouldn't work either, I right clicked it and clicked options it didn't say anything, it only said "open at login and show in finder" I tried dragging the applications but it still won't work. Please help me, it's really annoying just searching the applications in spotlight!

Maybe a permission problem?  Use Disk Utility to repair permissions, see if that helps.

  • IPod touch applications won't stay open

I just bought a used iPod touch. The first day put applications on it, and everything worked fine, then suddenly some of the applications would open log enough to see the title screen, then it would go back home. I restored the iPod to the factory settings, re-installed the apps, and everything worked fine for a little over a day, then the same thing happened. I don't have any windows open in safari, and I still have almost half of my memory left.

I have the same problem as well with an itouch that I purchased for my niece. The first one I bought, the apps never worked after I downloaded and some songs wouldn't play either. So last Monday I exchanged it and got a new one. The apps worked on this one along with the music until she unwrapped it Christmas morning (about 4 days). Now the app will flash up then quickly return to the home screen. I also received a touch for Christmas and put the apps on mine and so far am NOT having that problem, so I don't think it's a computer problem. I scheduled a support call with apple but it will be January 4th before they can get to me! If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • Mail application won't stay open!!!!

I have tried deleting and creating my email account and I have restarted my iPad. Still when I open my mail app it immediately closes. I can see my emails so I know it's actually working, but before I can open them it closes. I use the same ap on my iPhone with the same email and it works fine. Please help!!!

WOW! This helped out tremendously! About a month ago my 5s stopped downloading emails on it's own. It also would take at least ten attempts to open and then close out the app. It would flash on the screen as if opening up and then not actually open. However, it would show it was "open" when I would go to close out of apps running in the background. FRUSTRATING! I've done hard restarts, backed it up, etc. I'm hoping the Load Remote Images was the problem.
What is the Load Remote Images for anyway?

  • Iphone won't stay on long enough to activate

I just got my iphone today (charged via wall outlet 45 min and still connected) and the screen won't stay on more than 5 seconds. It has the charged symbol but won't stay active long enough to even consider attaching to the usb for activation!
I tried resetting with no success.
    Any suggestions...
    Thanks

When you turn it on, does it ask you to slide the
    bottom to unlock?
What do you see when you turn it on?
it says "activate iphone connect to itunes".
at the bottom it has a "slide for emergency" calling...actually i had to turn it on twice to get you the info.
it does have a closed lock at the top of the screen though.

For the past few months, my Mac has been acting weird. EVERY time I boot up the computer, Messages opens automaticallly (I am runing OS X 10.8.x). I quit the app, but it just re-opens a few seconds later! It just won't stay off! I've looked it up online and nothing helps. I have no idea what to do!!!

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Screensaver won't stay on?

My screensaver comes on like it should, or comes on from hot corner, but won't stay on. I've tried a number of things including:
    Trashing the prefs file (Library>ByHost>com.apple.screensaver.....plist)
Starting from they DVD and fixing permissions and verifying/repairing the startup volume,
Quitting all applications (I thought it was Time Machine or Chrome, but no)
Making sure "wake for ethernet" is off.
    Disabling Bluetooth.
It'll stay on for a minute or less, and then stay off. So I'll come back and my display will be on. I have some major ghosting now.
It also wakes up if I set the display to go to sleep.

Sounds like some process is waking it up.  You may think you quit all your apps but some apps spawn other processes of their own.  Look at your Activity Monitor.  Select All Processes for the Show popup menu.  Now you will see all the processes that are running.  Do you recognize any related to your own stuff?
As for waking from sleep.  You could look at the Wake Reason codes in the kernel log and see if it is on this list to suggest a cause.  Or just install PleaseSleep which tries to force the system to obey your energy saver preferences.

  • The publishing settings page does not open when I click on the domain name and the iWeb application will not stay on the dock.

    Hello,
I have been trying to help a friend who is having problems publishing her website. (She has done so previously using Mobile me)
There seem to be a couple of things wrong with the application,
1     if I drag the application icon onto the dock, it won't stay there
2     I wanted to change where her site is published to (she has bought a domain name and has a hosting service now) but when I click on the domain name I do not get the "site publishing settings page" so we can't enter the new details.  All that comes up is the main page of her website.
I would suggest uninstalling and re-installing Iweb, to see if that clears the problem, but as Iweb came pre-installed with her Imac, I am not sure that we can do this.
    Any ideas please?
she's using and imac 24 in (approx 4 years old) and running osx 10.5.8

NO - not correct.  Even if you are still using iWeb 08, you can still publish to another host and not MobileMe.  You do this by selecting the option 'Publish to a local folder" and this will publish the site to your desktop and you can then use an ftp programme such as Cyberduck to upload your site to your host.
MobileMe will not be here after the end of June, so you will have to find alternative hosting.  They are not taking any new subscriptions.
On new Macs, iLife 11 is pre-installed, but only iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are included, not iWeb and iDVD. The Apple Online store is not selling the boxed version of iLife 11 any longer, so if you want to upgrade to iLife, then you'll have to look online at Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for a boxed set of either iLife 09 or iLife 11.  Both contains iWeb 09, which is what you would want.
