Applt unresponsive in Mac OS X

This one is driving me nuts.
For some obscure (to me at least) reason, my swing applet is totally
unresponsive in OS X, although it works just fine in Windows. Here's
the story:
~ Original version developed over a year ago, using JBuilder. Original design was not very complicated - little user
interaction, mainly feedback text, progress bars and a cancel button.
Since the IDE lacks a GUI-creation feature, opted for GridBagLayout
mode, manually coding it. Worked perfectly well in both platforms.
~ About three weeks ago the client updated specs for the applet, and it
involved a great deal of additional GUI stuff. Refused to code that
manually, so I decided to use NetBeans (currently 6.5.1) for the new
version. Creating the new GUI was a breeze, really, and I had it up and
running in a couple of days. Everything looked nice and dandy up to
here.
~ Next day, when I tried the applet on a Mac, I hit the
no-java-1.6-for-OSX wall. Looked it up on the net and found this blog by
Jim Blackler
that explains why. Followed the directions, which involve setting
NetBeans to work with JDK 1.5, and yes, the applet showed, but the GUI
was completely distorted and it was unresponsive.
~ Great idea: download NetBeans for Mac and work from there. Long story short, the resulting applet worked perfectly well in Windows but was still unresponsive in Mac.
~ In an attempt to return to "known grounds", I changed the layout
model back to GridBag, which led to a less-than-perfect result but
still functional (in Win, that is). Tried again on the Mac and,
although the GUI looked the intended way, it was still unresponsive.
~ Suspecting a bad java install on my Mac, I tried it on another one, with
the same result. I even downloaded the newer Update 3, but there was no
change.
~ After a bit of exchange at the Apple forums, I reinstalled NetBeans for Mac and debugged the applet
with it. BTW, I went back to the GridLayout model and fixed it for Mac, and that's the version
I debugged w/NetBeans. Funny enough, the applet ran like a charm from
the IDE! In a heart-pounding minute I built/signed the jar and tried it
in Safari, just to find that the darn thing was again unresponsive. Of course, it shines in Windows.
Just to make things clear, by "unresponsive" I mean that the GUI
elements do not respond to user interaction. I know for sure the applet
is running - since the original version I included an optional Trace
window, which let me make sure that everything runs well all the way to
the start() method.
I would gladly show any code here, but the thing is I don't think
there's anything wrong with it - it runs well in Windows and the Mac NetBeans IDE. Actually I
woudn't really know what to show. I guess it must be related to some configuration issue which I'm missing.
Thanks in advance to anyone with a good idea!

Good morning to both, and thanks macrules2 for your post.

I haven't read the entire thread (I know, I'm lazy), but there is one other place that stack traces can be dumped, and it's the console located in Applications/Utilities/Console.appChecked all of the logs and no, there's nothing in them. I even re-tested the applet from Safari and checked again (there should've been new entries) and nothing. Weird, I know.

I realize this is an ancient source but there is an example of running a signed applet here http://java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/Programming/JDCBook/signed.html#appli I really think you want to run this in appletviewer and see what's going on, this just has to be some sort of traceable error.
After playing a bit with the settings (thanks for the link, btw) I was finally able to make it run in appletviewer from terminal... only to find out that yes, it works well, meaning no error/stack dump. Back to square one.
I think I'll follow your idea of adding things to the dumb applet I made yesterday until it fails too... Rather lengthy and boring process, but I see no other way out at this point.
I'll post whatever I find out. In the meantime, thank you so very much for your help.

  • Keyboard and trackpad temporarily unresponsive after mac is woken from sleep or battery runs out

I am having problems after my battery runs out completely or when I open my macbook  a day later with the battery charged. If my battery runs out, after I plug it in and turn it on, the first thing that appears is the login page and there is a dark grey background instead of my normal blurred background, and the user picture is shifted to the right. After I enter my password a small white bar at the bottom loads and my normal login page loads, but this time my keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive. I have to wait for the display to go to sleep, close my macbook and then open it for my keyboard and trackpad to work. Sometimes I have to repeat this process more than once. The same thing happens when I wake up my computer with full battery after a nights sleep, and instead of being able to wake it up just by opening the lid I have to turn it on with the power button. Please help I know this isn't normal behavior. I have already reset the SMC and PRAM with no success and this problem was there before and after I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite.
    Thanks

I'm having same issue with my PB as Scott. Much appriciated if someone could help.

Why is it that when I re-save a TIF file in GIMP that I get an image preview, but not with Adobe PS?
You've been blaming this on Apple since CS6 and over the versions I've grown to really resent your response on this forum.
Why does GIMP, a free program save thumbnails correctly but the most expensive image editing program cannot?
I'd at least like an answer to the GIMP question. Why does it work and PS does not?

  • Dreamweaver CS6 / CC crashes after Mac OSX 10.9.3 update.

Updated today to Dreamweaver CC, and the issue persists. My 'local' files are stored on a Windows Vista server on the LAN.
Everything worked OK until 2 days ago, so I'm almost sure the issue is related to the OS update.
I can open a file, work on it for a while, and after a few minutes, Dreamweaver  'hangs' and can take up to 10 minutes to be responsive again.

  • Leopard partially freezes up.

I'll return to my brand new 24" iMac to find network activity is dead, the Dock is completely unresponsive (mouseover does nothing, likewise any other attempted interaction), command-tab is dead, the Apple menu can be accessed, but nothing results from it, I cannot bring up force quit either from the KB shortcut or the Apple menu, some programs will have the spinning beachball of death, others that can be accessed (by clicking on their window, if I'm lucky and it's not covered by a hung program's windows) but upon closing a window or quitting the app it too hangs.
This has happened six times now over a two week period.
To summarise: the Mac's networking is unresponsive (other Macs on the same LAN are fine, it isn't anything other than this one Mac), the Dock is totally frozen, Force Quit cannot be accessed, and apps hang when I do anything more serious than look at them.
I can no longer trust this new Mac to stay up and running while I am gone. This is but one of many annoying issues I am having with it. I've been through three wipes of the HD and clean reinstalls of Leopard to try and fix earlier problems (which still continue to occur). This is also my second iMac. The first was declared DOA in under eight hours. So I'm not having a lot of luck here.
Also - these forums appear to be suffering serious issues. It took several tries to try and post this message. I am getting the errors:
"500 Unable to insert thread into the database: No operations allowed after connection closed.
Resin Professional 3.0.23 (built Mon, 22 Jan 2007 02:25:17 PST)"
"Not allowed to post messages more than once every 30 seconds." (but I haven't)
Plus upon login I was asked to create a user account???
Oh, and the drafts saved are incomplete. Nothing is working right with these forums.

What are you calling a clean install? This article explains the different installation options available:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
If you mean erase and install, it does sound like you have a hardware issue if you are getting partial freezes with no non-Apple devices connected to the computer and no non-Apple software installed. If any of these conditions is untrue, you have to eliminate all other potential causes this way after backing up your data at least twice to verify you definitely have a hardware issue with the computer. Bad RAM can cause such issues as my FAQ* here explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
And can often start without warning because no RAM can be tested for errors accurately. If it reports errors in a test, you can believe it. If it doesn't report errors in a test, you can't believe it.

  • Firmware Graphics Update

I installed the latest Max OS update and was prompted to install this firmware graphics update. The wireless mouse and keyboard were not recognized and I couldn't select Update to start the install. I then connected a USB mouse and keyboard and this worked. This firmware graphics update has been updating for the last 30 minutes or so.
What I am getting is a picture of my desktop and the circular progress meter going. I don't think it should be taking this long. Has anyone have any solution to this? Prior to me selecting the Update the message stated that I wait until the update is complete and I shouldn't power cycle the iMac.
iMac 24 Inch display 2.8Ghz, 2600 graphics card

Chuy I recommend the following (best advice I can offer w/o having done this update on that system:
    1. worry (I loathe Firmware updates that don't behave they way they are sposed to...)Touch nothing.
    2. grab a strong drink if you drink .. Carefully check that you followed all the firmware update instructions precisely from the beginning (even check the apple site on another computer - I'm surprised: usually the instructions say - in step #1 *First remove all non-apple devices*, USB, Firewire etc etc...*)
    3. call the /your local Apple dealer/superstore and ask to speak to a genuine wizard or guru Give your name (make sure you *get all their names* and write them down)
    4. seek their advice:
ask what will happen if you end up with an unresponsive/unbootable mac...after following their advice.. and how you will fix it. Write down their advice, read it back, then follow it precisely - after thanking them by name.
    5. If it works, ring back, ask for them by name , get the store's support email address, thank them profusely & drop a brief email To ATTN Manager*support.... CC Wizard thanking them in writing. (everyone likes appreciation).
    6. If it doesn't work, ring back, ask for them by name, get them (no-one else) and plot a 'fix' strategy....
    Repeat from step 5.
+Finally, it's not required but it'd be nice if you posted back here...+ (I'm assuming you're getting email via another method)
Best wishes & best of luck (no - it shouldnt take THAT long w/o warning you first)

  • Travailler sur un time lapse pro

    Bonjour,
    merci d'avance,

  • Mac Pro flashing power light (unresponsive)

    Hello,
Twice this week a Mac Pro Quad 2.66 has become unresponsive after being left unattended. I have revived the computer by resetting the System Management Controller (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1806).
It's obvious this is not normal. Should I bring the computer in for repair? Is there something else I should be doing?
    Connected to the computer are:
    - Two Lacie Electron 19 Blue III monitors
    - Lacie usb drive
    - Lacie firewire 400 drive
    - JVC DV-HRS2 Mini DV deck (firewire)
    - both ethernet ports are being used
    Thanks,

    Hello,
No USB hubs or USB/FW on the monitors. The lacie drives are older models and don't have the On/Off/Auto switch.
I think this happens when the computer and drive go to sleep. I will try to change the cables and plug the drives in one at a time.
    Thanks Hatter.
    The hatter wrote:
A device that doesn't support sleep and loses communication. And LaCie. USB devices and cables. Any USB hub.
Could be as simple as a USB cable; Firewire cable... does the Electron have USB and/or FW ports also?
LaCie recommends unplugging everything, shutting down, no power cord even and let sit a couple minutes.
Try without your peripherals and then try one at a time.
The big problem is if you are doing a hard restart w/o repairing your drives, whether you safely eject your drives first.
LaCie cables and power adapters can be a problem as I said, but any hub, mouse, keyboard can cause a problem but most often the mouse moves but you can't do anything and system is unresponsive.
No you don't need to take it in. I doubt Apple Hardware Test would find anything either.

I can't get my Mac to turn on? Our power went out and it is now unresponsive.  I have tried the usual way to power it up but am not getting anything. Does it need to be reset?

    Which Mac model?
When you say not getting anything - do you mean no sounds, beeps, etc?
It is possible that your Mac's motherboard or power supply are damaged.

  • Everytime I put my Mac Mini to Sleep, Finder becomes completely unresponsive.  How do i fix this?

    Hi,
Everytime I put my Mac Mini to Sleep, Finder becomes completely unresponsive.  I've tried several Terminal commands to kill/quit/relaunch it, but nothing seems to work.  Once my Mac has been put to sleep there is nothing I can do to get it back after I have woken it up.  I always have to restart my computer, and even then, I have to hold the power button to shut it down because it will never fully shut down from the restart.  I have a feeling that Finder is still running in the background and not allowing the mac to shut down.  I'd rather not have to reinstall my OS.  Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this problem?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Hi Andrew, what all is connected USB wise?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for Sleep/Wake problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Opening .toast files causes my MAC to become unresponsive

    Hi,
My Macbook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010 -  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 -  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 - NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB - Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)) has recently developed an extremely frustrating problem, it occurs whenever I try to open a .toast file, whenever I do my MAC just hangs and becomes so slow it is unusable and I end up having to power off manually.
I am a picture researcher so I often need to grab stills from my DVD collection. The way I like to work (which has always been the most effective and reliable means of doing my job up until last weekend) is to rip my DVDs, compress the TS folder to a single-layer DVD sized image file using Toast Titanium. I would then open the .toast file and transfer the compressed audio and video TS folders to a folder on my external hard drive. This has always been the best way for me to maintain a balance between image quality and file size.
Since last weekend however, when I was ripping and compressing about 15 discs toward the end of the session my MAC was unable to open .toast files without hanging for ages and becoming unresponsive.
I have since upgraded to Lion, upgraded to the latest Toast Titanium and upgraded my Little Snitch as I thought this could be causing the problem, but nothing has helped I still have the same problem.
If anybody has experienced this, can shed any light on what is happening and hopefully offer a solution to the problem I would be most grateful.
    Thanks is advance,
    Michael.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
[[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
[[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
