Applying a gradient to my object results in a tiled pattern.

Hi,
I'm not sure how to explain this, and have had trouble trying to find help because I don't really know how to describe what's happening.
I created a diagonal gradient that I applied to a rectangle with rounded corners. I added the gradient to the swatches pallet. I then created another rectangle which was immediately filled with the gradient swatch. However, the gradient created was shaped like the rectangle and did not line up with the object, thus creating a tiled pattern of the swatch inside the rectangle. Attached image "gradient.jpg" shows the first (normal) gradient and the second (tiled) gradient.
I moved the rectangle and observed that the gradient did not move with the object. It's like the gradient is stuck to the page and so the tiling pattern changes depending on where I move the rectangle.
Does anyone know what is going on and how I can get rid of it? I just want a rectangle with a regular gradient across the fill.
I'm using Illustrator CS4 win.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Steven

Thanks for the quick reply, Wade.
Fantastic - it worked just fine. The only thing I noticed is that the swatch doesn't retain the -45 degree angle. Is this something I have to specify in the gradient pallet each time I apply the swatch? Actually I just tested it and worked out that a graphic style contains both the gradient information and the angle.
Thanks again for your help.
Cheers,
Steven
BTW, were you able to view the image I attached? When I view my post, it has the word QUEUED after it and I can't select it. Sorry, first time I've attached an image... Actually, just worked out there's an 'insert image' button in the editor, so I'll use that from now on. Cheers.

  • How do i apply one gradient across multiple live paint objects??

    I need to apply a single gradient acros a number of live paint objects but am finding it annoyingly hard to find a way.  I know that normally, to apply a gradient across multiple objects, you would need to make them all into one compound path but does this apply to live paint groups in any way??  Can what i need to achieve actually be done??
    Thanks for any help given

    1. With the Live Paint selection tool, shift-select those shapes you want to unify with a gradient.
    2. Fill this (multi-shape) selection with your gradient. Now each shape is filled separately.
    3. With the gradient tool, drag across all of the selected shapes.
    "Annoyingly hard." Is that different than "hard"?

  • How do you apply a gradient to Levels Gamma in CS2?

    In Adobe Photoshop versions 5 and 7, while retouching photographs I was able to change a levels gamma setting on a selected area, then make the levels change gradual from one side to the other by using the gradient tool. This enabled me to compensate for a gradual fall-off in brightness across an area of the photo. But in version CS2 (Windows XP Professional), the gradient tool seems to work only for added colors, not for the levels gamma.
    Does anyone know how to apply a gradient to a levels gamma change in CS2?  I can't seem to get it to work either on non-layered levels or on a levels layer.

    Has it ever worked? If so, what's changed? (provide comments in description field): No

    Recent System Hardware or Software change?: Not Applicable

    Thanks for your reply -- this is a novel approach I haven't enough experience to figure out for myself!  Chalk one up for the forum!   In the meantime, I think I've found the "missing link" from the simple way I did it in Photoshop 5 and 7 to a similar way in CS2 -- I surveyed all the Gradient Presets, and found one which lookied exactly like the oft-repeated black-to-white preset, but which the tool-tip revealed is actually a "levels" preset.  By selecting it, I was able to use the gradient tool to apply my levels change gradually across a selected area (or across the whole image if nothing is selected).  This way I avoid having to edit masks.
    But thanks for steering me on to a new way of thinking that I need to explore!

  • Gradient Across Multiple Objects?

    I have a few dozen paint stroke objects that I'm wanting to apply a gradient to so the outlines fade from one color to another, but over all the lines as a whole rather than individually.  I've tried a number of approaches but none have been successful.  Does anybody have some good ideas on how to achieve this?  Thanks.

    Motion is likely to not allow grouping several objects if those objects contain various filters, or a mixture of groups with other objects... and ... the disclosure triangles are dialed down. If you collapse all the items you select, then grouping of multiple objects works.
    It is possible to create  image masks for each "stroke" (without the need for grouping the stroke objects together.) You can add as many Image Masks as you need. It's usually just more convenient to group all the objects together and use a single mask with the group.

  • Applying a Gradient Feather with a Drop Shadow...

    Howdy,
    I am currently working in Indesign CS3 and I have an outlined image in my document and I am applying a gradient feather so that the image fades from opaque to transparent at the bottom. If I apply a black colored drop shadow to the object the image's color changes slightly because the shadow's color darkens the image where the gradient feather's transparency fades away.
    I have checked the box in the shadows menu so that it "Honors the other effects" but it seems to apply no change in the darkening of the bottom of my image. Has there been a fix for this or an update that will eliminate the shadows color effecting my images color?
    I was just wondering if you could fix the program so that the shadow takes the gradient feather into consideration and does not interfere with the objects color? Or even add a gradient feather feature to the drop shadow effect itself?
    Any suggestions for fixing this other than creating a shadow for the object in Photoshop and importing it into my document. Placing the shadow behind my image and applying a gradient feather that fades out earlier so that the shadows color does not interfere with my image.
    Anything on this subject I would be thoroughly grateful for.
    ~Thanks!

    Ok sorry this is confusing! Here is the image that I am talking about. I am working in InDesign on a catalog for softball uniforms. I have a ton of these uniform images that I'm attempting to apply a gradient feather as well as a drop shadow. But the drop shadow is effecting the color of the uniforms. I was just wondering it this can be avoided.
    Image #1 has both the feather and the drop shadow applied to it. The shadow at the bottom where the image feathers shows through and changes the color of the image. I was just wondering if this can be avoided. You can see the difference it makes when the shadow is not applied on Image 2. I have made sure the drop shadow effect "honors other effects" but it doesn't seem to affect it showing through the feather. I am just wondering if it's possible to avoid having the drop shadow show through the feathered end of an object.
    Thanks for your help everyone!

  • Why does applying a gradient to text turn it black, but the text accepted the gradient fill?

    This seems utterly illogical.  The text now has the gradient fill in its fill slot.  But it's black.
    Thoughts?
    Reasoning?

    You cannot apply a gradient to individual characters, hence at the character level if you started with green type, applied a gradient, your type would turn black (no matter what the original color was) and would not show a gradient.
    You would preferably delete that fill (to keep your postscript clean), and then click on "Type No Appearance" . Thsi taeks you to the object level of Type, and apply your gradient here.

  • Two gradients on one object?

    Hi,
    Is it possible to apply to Linear gradients on one object? For example one LinearGradient from left to right, another from top to bottom?
    kaliif

    No, the fill variable accepts only one Paint (Color, LinearGradient, RadialGradient) object.
    Now, you can do your own [Custom Paints|http://today.java.net/pub/a/today/2009/07/30/javafx-custom-paints.html]...
    Or just use a fast workaround, by superposing two rectangles with transparent gradient:
    var group: Group = Group {
      content: [
        Rectangle {
            x: 0 y: 0 width: 100 height: 100
            fill: LinearGradient {
                startX: 0.0, startY: 0.0, endX: 1.0, endY: 0.0
                proportional: true
                stops: [ Stop { offset: 0.0 color: Color.ORANGE },
                         Stop { offset: 1.0 color: Color.RED } ]
      onMousePressed: function (evt: MouseEvent): Void
        insert
          Rectangle {
              x: 0 y: 0 width: 100 height: 100
              fill: LinearGradient {
                  startX: 0.0, startY: 0.0, endX: 0.0, endY: 1.0
                  proportional: true
                  stops: [ Stop { offset: 0.0 color: Color.rgb(0, 0, 0xFF, 0.5) },
                           Stop { offset: 1.0 color: Color.rgb(0, 0xFF, 0, 0.5) } ]
        into group.content;
    }(partially re-using Gradient reference's example).

  • How to find out the PATTERN, GRADIENT and BRUSHED objects?

    How to find out the PATTERN, GRADIENT and BRUSHED objects information in illustrator active document file. And also how to find the CMYK and RGB color information in illustrator file through javascript. Could you please provide any examples.

    I tried using the below code. But for both "cmyk" and "grayscale" pattern it gives only CMYK. Kindly check and advise.
    Code:
    var docRef = activeDocument;
    for(var i=docRef.inkList.length-1;i>=0;i--){
      var inkRef=docRef.inkList[i];
      var inkRefName=inkRef.name;

  • Problem with applying fills & strokes to grouped objects in Illustrator CC

    I have this problem that I deal with everyday & I can't figure out how to fix it.
    I am always struggling with applying fills & strokes (or changing fills & strokes).
    It seems like I always have to ungroup the objects first (even if I never grouped them in the first place), or I have to clear appearance first. Sometimes I have to ungroup several times, even if it is only one object by itself, not grouped with anything else.
    I think It may have something to do with the pathfinder... like the pathfinder is creating groups when I use the divide filter.
    Even when I use the direct selection tool, to select just the object I want, it wont let me apply the fill or stroke that I want.
    Also, it seems like it has several layers of appearance... when I ungroup the object, it changes appearance (the fill or stroke changes).
    Also, if I eyedrop the object to apply its appearance to another object, the "hidden" appearance is the one that gets appled to the new object.
    The closest discussion I could find was about compound paths, but I think this is a different issue, because when I go to compound paths in the menu, it doesn't give me the option to release anythig.
    I have this problem ALL DAY LONG, every day. Please help!!

    Thanks for your reply!
    I see what you are saying, and I think is some cases that could be a helpful trick - but the problem I'm having is slighlty different.
    The object that I want to change doesn't show the actual appearance... it only shows its underlying appearance after ungrouping several times, and then when it is completely ungrouped, it visibly changes to another fill & stroke. This happens even when the object is not grouped with anything... it is just grouped to itself i guess & I am not grouping these items, they just become grouped somehow - I think because of the pathfinder. I often have to ungroup 3-5 times, which is a hassle in iteself... but sometimes I actually need to grouping to keep items togther so I can manage all the ojects & move them around as needed.
    So... the method you are suggesting could possibly solve the issue, except I don't know what the fill & stroke is until I ungroup everything, so I can't create the swatch off to the side to match it. The other thing is, it seems like I would be creating a lot of swatches, since I use lots of different fills & it seems like it would be a lot of extra work.
    Here is an example of 2 objects before using the pathfinder. Please note how the object selected & the fill & stroke boxes all jive:
    Now here are two images after using the pathfinder tool (I added another object to get the problme to happen). Please note how the fill & stroke boxes do not match the objects selected:
    This is what happens when I try to change the fill to green (the fill does not apply):
    I thought it had something to do with compound paths, but as you can see below, the menu doesn't give me an option to release compound paths:
    The final image is what happens after I ungroup the objects:
    I don't understand:
    1) why pathfinder is grouping these objects
    2) why the strokes & fills change & why the fill & stroke boxes don't match the actual fill & stroke.
    3) why I can't change the fill or stroke without ungrouping (even when using the direct selection tool).
    4) why the fill & stroke change again after ungrouping

    Yup! Apply what you want to one object, then copy the object,
    then
    shift+ctrl+alt+v the other objects to paste attributes (or
    Edit>Paste
    attributes).

    What color management settings? Color mode? This sounds like you are simply not using the proper profile.
