"New Smart Object via copy" via JavaScript?

I'd like to know how to copy a smart object but, so every smart object is independent.
I know you can copy layers via layer.duplicate() but that function just copies a instance of the object instead of creating a new object. So how would you do it?

Install Scriptlisener Plugin and do menu layer>Smart Objects>New Smart Object via Copy
javascript action manager code looks like this

Look quit a bit like Michael's above append one may execute faster the the other.

CS3 New smart object via copy not working

1. I open an image in Photoshop CS3 from camera raw (CR) as a smart object.
2. I right click on the layer and choose "new smart object via copy."
3. I double click on the thumb nail to open the image in CR.
4. I make new edits on the image in CR.
5. I click OK.
6. In CS3 both the new layer and the original layer show the edits done in # 4.
I uninstalled and reinstalled CS# to no avail.
I am running CS3 on a Win Vista 64 bit.
If anyone can make a suggestion, I thank you in advance.

I should say I am trying to learn this software and stumbling through Mr. Kelby's 7 Point System book.
I found my error. I was highllighting the layers not clicking the eye icons off and on.

New Smart Object Via Copy

Hello Everyone.
I have a smart object, and, If I apply Control "J" Or Drag It to the New Layer Icon, It will Duplicate the Layer.
And If I Go to Layer-Smart Objects- New Object Via Copy, It dose the same thing.
What Is the Different between Control J, or Go to Layer- Smart Objects- New Smart Object Via Copy.

You can have duplicated smart object layers that share a common embedded object and you can have duplicated smart object layers with independent embedded smart object. To get independent embedded object you need to use Layers>Smart Objects>New Smart Object via Copy. There are several way to create duplicate smart object layer with shared embedded object. No they don't.
Acrobat may be bundled with Creative Suite collections but the APIs has nothing in common other than the use of JavaScript. CS apps use the ExtendScript system, Acrobat has its own internal API and an SDK for inter-application control.
PDF is an end-destination format - the page content is not designed to be edited, so while there are tools in the user interface to allow touchups and corrections to page objects those features are not available for automation. The JavaScript engine does not have access to the low-level document structure, it can only see markup (comments and form elements) and a limited range of document properties.

Photoshop smart object layer will not open in ACR when I double click

I have a raw file opened up in photoshop, duplicated it, made them smart objects, when I click the smart object icon on the file, i get another copy of the file in photoshop, the file doesn't open up in acr, is there a setting i'm missing?

If you dupe that smart object layer you still have one smart object change one the other also changes. If you want two smart object for the save image so you cab have two versions of raw conversions you need to use menu Layers>smart Object>New smart object via copy..

Bug? Camera Raw Smart Object Can't Be Edited

I have a problem where a raw file placed as a smart object can't be re-edited in CS3. Here's how to replicate the problem:
1. Open a JPEG or TIFF as a Smart Object (may happen with other file types).
2. Go to Layer > Smart Objects > New Smart Object via Copy.
3. Double-click the top smart object and make changes in Adobe Camera Raw.
You should now be able to hide/show the top layer (the final)
to see the bottom layer (the original.)
4. Double-click the top smart object layer to see that it properly opens Camera Raw allowing you to make edits (this works for now but will stop working when we encounter the bug in a moment).
5. Save the file and close it.
6. Re-open the file and double-click either of the smart object layers to edit them. Instead of Camera Raw dialog opening, the image in the window changes to the original unedited version. This is a bug and doesn't happen on every image, but it always happens on at least some of my images.
There have been times when it works, but the next time I open the file it stops working. Some of my files allow editing later without problems. Truly weird. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a workaround?
I have applied all updaters, so that means I am using Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 with Camera 4.4.1 on Mac OS 10.5.2. I have also trashed preferences for Photoshop and Adobe Bridge. I've also Purged the Adobe Camera Raw Cache in the Bridge. This happens on both my Mac Pro (3GB RAM) and MacBook Pro (4GB RAM) so it's not just one machine.

Stumbled on your post while searching on a similar issue. I'm not sure if I precisely understand yuour problem, but here's my experience when dealing with TIFFs and JPEGs embedded as Smart Objects in CS3...
If the Smart Object layer contains a TIFF or JPEG that has already been edited and saved in Camera Raw (i.e., the embedded file has Camera Raw XMP metadata in its header), then Photoshop will open the Smart Object's contents in Camera Raw... with one provision. You have to make sure that in your Camera Raw preferences, under "JPEG and TIFF Handling", that both boxes are checked for "Always open JPEG/TIFF files with settings using Camera Raw".
If those boxes aren't checked, when you try to edit the contents of a Smart Object layer containing a TIFF or JPEG with Camera Raw settings in its header, instead of opening the embedded file for editing, Photoshop seems to simply revert to displaying the layer without the settings applied. I'm unsure whether this is a bug or intended behavior, but it seems to be one of the symptoms you describe.
On the other hand, if you make a Smart Object layer from a JPEG or TIFF that does not already have Camera Raw settings in its header, Photoshop CS3 will never open that layer's contents in Camera Raw, regardless of what preferences you have checked. Instead, the contents are opened in a separate window as a temporary .psb file. The only way I've found to do Camera Raw editing in these cases is to export the layer, edit the exported file in Raw, and then re-import it via Replace Contents.

How can I duplicate a smart object and then edit it, without affecting the original?

I have a vector element from illustrator that I am placing in a tshirt mockup in photoshop. I have the layout essentially how I would like, but I am trying different color variations. I would think to just duplicate the first placement and then edit the color of the resulting copy, but this affects both the copy and the original. I looked into it a bit further, and found that I should try the "replace contents" option under smart objects, and that this would change the copy. So I go back to illustrator, made a copy of the original vector, and then made the color change I had in mind, and then saved it as a separate document that I could then use in replacing the contents of the copied. This however, is still affecting both smart objects!
I have tried this as both linked smart objects and embedded smart objects without success.
Ultimately, I simply want to maintain the position of the original layer with the duplicated and edited layers. If you know of a better way, please share!

I am able to create new smart object via copy, then create a variation on the original file linked in the parent smart object. Then I save that from illustrator with a different file name. Then I go back to photoshop and replace contents of the new smart object, linking it to the newer illustrator file.
This gets around the problem, but it takes a few more steps than the same thing did it in earlier versions of photoshop.

Spot Channels & Smart Objects in Photoshop CS4

I am trying to replace a smart object in Photoshop CS4 with a .psd, pdf or tiff image that contains a spot channel and it is not being honored in Photoshop
The Channel tab does not honor the "Spot Channel" from the replaced Smart Object image.
Question is: How can I replace a Smart Object and hold the spot channel?

I don't believe spot channels transfer from smart objects but there is a workaround.
1. Select Smart Object Layer. Layer: Smart Objects: New Smart Object Via Copy
2. Open the new smart object
3. Load spot channel as a selection.
4. Layer: New Fill Layer: Solid color.
5. Hide or delete all other layers.
6. Save and return to parent document
7. Load the smart object layer as a selection and hide the layer
8. Invert selection, save selection
9. Change the new alpha to the appropriate spot color channel
Let me know if that doesn't work.

Using Smart objects between documents

I know how to make smart objects within a single document, but Is it possible to use Smart objects between separate psd files?
I would like to create a master background file and have any changes made to this updated throughout all the other psd documents that contain this.
I cant find any info on this...Can it be done?

No a smart object layer contains a copy of the original in the layer. If you then change the orignal the copy in the smart object layer is not updated and if you change the copy in the smart object layer the original is not changed. Smart Object are independant from the original. It is posible to have multipal smart object layers that contain the same smart object in a single document. You can change the single smart object from any of the layers that its in. You can also have independant smart object layers of the same image. That the difference between dupeing a smart object layer and using menu layers>smart objects>new smart object via copy.

Smart objects pixelized

Hi all,
today i met a problem, which seems pretty mysterious to me.
When converting a few text- and freeform layers (or even a single freeform shape layer) into a smart object and scaling the smart object, it behaves as it was a common pixel layer (see image below).
Just can't find a way to fix it. Never encountered that problem before.

I resized up big time. Started by creating a 300x200 PSD file with three layers two shape layers and a text layer with layer style added. The layer style contained a stroke gradient overlay shadow and more. Fitst shape layer Pink Photoshop Cloud. Second shape layer Blue Photoshop Male shape. Top Layer Text JJMack. I then Photoshop new Document 3000x2000 ten times the size. Did menu File>Place and placed in the losopsd.psd file just hit enter did not to any transform.
Then three times with the placed smart object layer the target I did menu Layers>Smart Objecj>New Smart Object via Copy. I now had three more copies.
I double clicked on the smart object icon on the botom most copy in the layers palette
In Photosop menu Image>Size in the dialog checked Resample and Constrain not Layer Styles Bicubic set width 3000 click OK
Menu File>Save followed by File>Close
I double clicked on the smart object icon on the middle copy in the layers palette
In Photosop menu Image>Size in the dialog checked Resample, Constrain and Layer Styles Bicubic set width 3000 click OK

I clickcked once of the top copy in the layers palett, Then Ctr-T and changed the 100% in the width and height to 1000% and committed the transform
I selected the Left third rectangle 1000 Px by 2000 PX and added a layer Mask
Target middle copy Selected left 2/3 2000Px by 2000 PX and added a layer Mask Saved as PSD and Saved as Jpeg

Can I place a smart object and specify a layer comp?

I have many buttons, each as a layer comp, in a single file.
I do this because there are many common elements: layers for the button base, shared features, button gloss, etc.
What changes is the icon on the button, and possibly a supporting label.
I want to place these buttons on objects in other files.
So, I'd like to Place the file as a smart object AND SPECIFY THE LAYER COMP for the proper button.
Anybody?
Or maybe there is another approach?

In Illustrator rebuild your file so one layer has the shape needed for spot color, and the other layer has all your CMYK.
Copy and paste this into Photoshop as a smart object, rename the smart object to CMYK
Ctrl click on the layer name for CMYK > New Smart Object Via Copy, rename this to SPOT
Double click on CMYK in photoshop, in illustrator for layer properties turn off Print for the spot color
Double click on SPOTin photoshop, in illustrator for layer properties turn off Print for the cmky layer
In photoshop command click on the spot layer, in channels choose new spot channel.
turn off the visibilty for the layer called spot, you only needed this for the shaep of the marching ants
In summary Photoshop has a channels palette where spot colors need to be defined in order for them to print in a spot channel when seperating. Illustrator is different where you can mix spot and cmyk objects in layers.

Refresh underlying image of smart object

I made some basic adjustments in Lightroom and then opened the image as a smart object in Photoshop.
If I decide to make more changes in Lightroom how do I tell Photoshop to 'refresh' the underlying image?

LR and ACR store settings for the Adobe Conversion Engine in vasious places File MetaData, Sidecar files and ACR database to name some. If an embedded smart object is a RAW file the smart object has it set of Raw conversion setting. You can in Photoshop use menu Layers>Smart Objects>New Smart Object via Copy to create a independent new smart object layer. Once this is done in Photoshop if you double click on the copied layer leyer's smart object icon in the layers palette ACR will open on the new copy with its copied RAW Conversion settings. You can change the setting an have ACR update the copy's RAW settings. You will not have two different RAW conversions in Photoshop on layers you can blend together to bring out more detail. With Smart Objects you dealing with copies...

Vector Smart Object Text - P'shop

Hi Guys,
I am trying to make a text layer in photoshop and convert to a smart vector object, but it only gives me an option to convert to smart object, as opposed to vector smart object. The bad point about this is that the text becomes rasterised when exported to EPS or PDF (same with vector shapes within a smart object), unlike a regular vector layers which output correctly.
Is there anything im missing out on, or do I have to revert to importing all text from illustrator and set up my smart vectors like that?
