Apps auto-launch on startup, despite System Prefs and quitting before shutdown.
All apps that were open before shutdown are relaunching themselves upon startup.
This behavior occurs even if I quit each application individually before initiating system shutdown.
This behavior occurs whether I tick or untick the following settings within System Preferences / General:
• Ask to keep changes when closing documents.
• Close windows when quitting an application.
This behavior occurs despite none of the apps being listed within System Prefs / Login Items.
Examples of auto-launching apps (behavior occured just now with these): TextEdit, Dictionary, Calendar, Contacts, Safari, Firefox, Excel, Acrobat.
I am the administrator and only user on this machine.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box markedAllow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

Despite checking 'save and quit' before exit, I lose all tabs upon re-launch.
This kind of thing keeps me from making Firefox my default browser.
This never happens with Chrome. How perceptive.
Yes I do use CCleaner.
Under Firefox cleanup in CCleaner, I have the following unchecked:
--Internet History
--Download History
I have checked the following, assuming these are fine to clean up:
--Internet Cache
--Cookies
--Sessions
--Compact Databases
Have I checked or unchecked any of the above in such a way
that it would keep Firefox from retaining tabs between sessions?

ITunes auto launches on startup (no iPod/Phone connected)
For the last couple of weeks (perhaps longer) I've noticed iTunes launches itself whenever I restart my MacBook Pro.
There is no iPhone connected at the time.
Everything is up to date in software.
I've removed iTunes helper from my login items.
I'm at a loss.
Your assistance in resolving this matter would be very much appreciated.
Cheers!
DarcyI just tried restarting again, this time with iTunes last closed on my music tab rather than the store tab, where I realized it had been parked for some time.
iTunes still auto launched on startup, though after a longer delay than usual.
AND after I quit iTunes, it auto launched itself again. That was a first.
For what it's worth. -
Stop auto launching at startup??
How do I get Spotify to stop auto launching at startup of my desktop? I have looked all over and cannot find the option.
Thanks. Here's another "me too" followed by what I've done so far. In Windows 7, about three weeks ago my Spotify started loading at startup.I checked preferences, for some reason the option had changed on its own to load at startup. I reset to "do NOT load" at startupThe next time I rebooted, it started up on its own again. I checked settings, they had changed back again. Again I fixed my preferencesThe NEXT time I rebooted, it happened again! This time I not only changed the setting back to NOT load at startup, I also opened MSCONFIG and checked the TWO, count-em, TWO entries of Spotify to prevent loading at startup. Pop up box suggested restartiing the computer. I did, no Spotify loaded. Yay...for now...however,Two hours later I took my laptop with me on a business visit. When I turned on the computer, Spotify loaded AGAIN.I again opened MSCONFIG and found FOUR, count-em, FOUR entries of Spotify I had to check to prevent loading at startup. This is getting very frustrating. It's my belief that some recent upgrade to Spotify is causing this, as it only started a few weeks ago. Someone with Spotify needs to check into this! Help me Obi Wan!!

System Prefs and App Store behaving bizarrely since installing ML
Since installing Mountain Lion a few days ago I've been experiencing some troubles with my System Preferences and the App Store. When I try to launch "Security & Privacy" "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" "iCloud" "Software Update" or "Notifications" it gives me the error "To use the "[Name]" preferences pane, System Preferenes must quit and reopen at which point it launches in 32-bit mode and then I get the error "You can't open [Name] preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac". I figured an update may be available, so I try to launch the App Store and I get "App Store cannot be opened because of a problem. : Check with thte developer to make sure App Store works with this version of OS X."
However, if I login to the guest account on my computer I can launch the App Store and edit all my System Preferences no problem. I have already repaired disk permissions, made sure the "32-bit" box is unchecked, etc. and reinstalled the OS.
Please Help!

System Pref "Security" crashes before opening
Hi. I'm appending the crash report from my latest attempt to open the Security module of my system prefs. I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall the whole system to fix this. I haven't been able to open Security for about 6 months, but I use Little Snitch so it hasn't been a real problem until now, when I have to set privacy permissions on a couple of folders.
When I click, Security tries to open, hangs, and eventually crashes. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

After upgrading to OSX Maverick my Apple TV has taken control of my iTunes videos insisting I have to watch it on my TV. I have tried disabling home sharing on iTunes and on the Apple TV menu, I have also checked the disable Infrared facility in Systems Prefs Security. Even if I put the Apple TV in standby as soon as I hit a key on my iMac, Apple TV comes back on and on my Itunes screen I get the Apple TV logo imprinted on the screen, meaning I can no longer watch it on my MAC, I have run out of ideas. Can anyone help.
I think you're headed the right direction. There is an AirPlay icon (on mine it is up near the play/pause controls) that I believe is used to set the default desitination for the video to play.
I'd never seen your issue before, but opened iTunes on a recently-upgraded-to-Mavericks MacBook and it did exactly as you described. While the video was loading, I switched the AirPlay option to the computer instead of ATV and it began playing locally (after a delay as you'd mentioned). I then read this page, which is actually quite old: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1091073, which lead me to the icon near the play/pause button. It now has Computer selected on it, and defaults to play locally instead of the ATV even after quitting and reopening iTunes. I hope that is helpful. -
Having trouble getting Notes from iMac to sync with iPad and iPhone. On iPad and iPhone I deleted Yahoo mail account in prefs and recreated it as Add Other Account. This restored Notes that had not been showing up. Can I do the same thing on my iMac?
I'd add the new account first, unless you can lose all your eMails in that account.

Is there 3rd-party app to easily disable/enable certain System Prefs?
Hi there,
For some very odd reason, one (and only one) of my System Preferences won't open/launch - - my 'Keyboard & Mouse' pref.
I've repaired disk permissions, emptied all Caches, upgraded (from 10.4.8) to 10.4.9, and nothing works.
I'd like to now see whether, if I temporarily disable my 'MouseWorks" Sys. Pref., my 'Keyboard & Mouse' pref. launches... but frankly, I don't know how to do this.
It would be great if there were a little box I could check/uncheck in the MouseWorks pref. pane, to enable or disable this Pref., but there isn't.
I could go looking for it, but I don't know where to look, or exactly what I'm looking for.
So I'm wondering if there's a little app that would simply and elegantly allow me to turn all these prefs off or on, at the check of a button.
Can anyone advise me please?
Thanks,

Remember after moving stuff around, deleting stuff and just doing a whole bunch of tinkering around it is always a lovely idea to run disk first aid or some other helpful app (such a onyx, http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/onyx_tiger.html) which will repair permissions and tidy things up a bit.
Good luck. -
How do i disable firefox auto launch at startup in windows vista?
firefox automatically launches when i start my computer. how do i turn this off?
Try to disable it from msconfig.
read here how to find(if you did not known) system configuration (typing msconfig in search box):
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_vista.html
follow the instructions to go to startup tab,
then in '''startup''' tab '''unckeck''' firefox then click''' OK''' to save changes then click '''restart'''.
thanks again -
Firefox 4 auto launches on startup on MacPro
My friend just bought a Macbook Pro - OS X is version 10.6.7
When Firefox 4.0 was first installed it worked fine, but then suddenly everytime you logon FireFox browser window automatically opens.
ThanksTo test to see if there is a problem with the profile (location where Firefox stores user data), try creating a new profile for use with Firefox 4 beta 8. For details of how to do that see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows Creating a new Firefox profile on Windows - MozillaZine Knowledge Base]
If it works with the new profile, you can copy some of the old data such as bookmarks and passwords from the old profile folder, for details see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox Transferring data to a new profile - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base] -
System Pref. and Apple Menu Problems
I am having several problems. I can' open System Preference from the dock or HD folder. I can't open the Apple Menu. When I click on the Apple Icon, the desktop disappears for a few seconds and then reappears. I then can't drag any files or folders. Also, Appleworks quits as soon as I type a keystroke. I also can't enter a search or label file folders. This all began when I installed new HP printer software. I followed HP support instructions to uninstall the driver, trash the Printer Folder, trash com.apple.print files, repair disk verifications, disconnect the usb cable to the printer, and restart. Nothing helped and HP support now says its a system problem. I'm a new learner, not sure what to do and could use some help. Did I post in the right discussion area? Thanks!
Hi salem, if an "archive and install" didn't fix the problem it suggests that the problem MAY lie in the preference or library files in your own "home" user area.
(deleted - wouldn't work in this situation)
Head to your Home/Library/Preferences folder (NB - this is the Library folder inside your Home folder, not the one at the "root" level of the HD) and, for starters, drag to trash:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
any hp related prefs files that may be hiding here such as
hp inkjet utility prefs
hp inkjet toolbox prefs
hp printer selector prefs
RESTART and see if the problem disappears. If not we may have to find some more demons to exorcise!
Phone modems are a pain for those big downloads, eh! It is a good idea to actually save the package when you install them, just in case of situations like your present one. Software Update should have an option to allow you to do this (Panther and Tiger both do, I can't quite remember wrt Jag, though). Alternatively head to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads and download them directly from there.
Some Apple dealers will burn the relevant downloadable updates to a disc for you if you ask them nicely and pay them a small fee, thereby saving a lot of download time, too.
Cheers

Keychain, System Prefs and Safari problems...
Hi there.
I've had my powerbookG4 1.33 for over a year now and it is great, but recently I have had a couple of simple problems.
My hard drive failed and was replaced by Apple with the warrenty service.
When I got it back, the user and admin was set to Apple and I tried to change it to myself but was really unsuccessfull.
Today when I went to use my computer, Safari and I-tunes had reset all of their settings and deleted my bookmarks.
Safari starts up with some error message saying the Keychain could not but stored, reset it? So I've done that and tried to repair keychains with no success.
I did the software updates and then all my files from the desktop vanished!!!!! And I am still having Keychain error messages and it deletes bookmarks I made. Should I just format/reload it myself? It seems apple did a terrible job.
ALSO.... Microsoft word came with my software package but says the trial is expired. I know it is on the CD's but can't seem to install it either..
help!
Jason RichardLook in the /Users folder to see if your original Home folder ("Apple"?) is there, renamed. If it is, follow the steps in this Kbase article to retrieve your settings and data:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854
I don't know of any software packages from Apple that would include Word, although new Macs often come with "Office 2004 For Mac Test Drive" installed. For information on the "demo has expired" alert, see:

App Store ignoring System Pref. settings
Today I awoke to an App Store notification that there were updates available. I was given two choices, 1) Install 2) Later (with some options). I opened App Store app to see what updates were supposedly available and there was the one update I was putting off which was XCode. I didn't want to install it now. I knew that I had changed the App Store settings in System Preferences to olny check for updates but not act on them or download them so I opened System Prefs. and verified this. Sure enough, I had only one item checked (Automatically check for updates). Everything else was unchecked.
So, I have a few quesstions;
Why is App Store ignoring its own settings and download an app I didn't want yet?
Why did the notification only offer me two options (again ignoring its own settings)?
Why didn't the notification tell me which updates were available?
And some comments;
This is just an unacceptable way to approach updates, IMHO. I need control over what is going to be downloaded and when (bandwidth control and timing). I must know what is ready for update beforehand so I can understand what it means and be able to opt out or delay it to a point when I am ready (control over what is going to be updated vs what is not and when).
--Carl-First, open Disk Utility, select your hard disk, go to Partition and create a volume. Move your files to it. Then, press Command and R keys in boot, open Disk Utility, erase the Mac volume and reinstall. When the install ends, transfer your files to your account and delete the volume
