Arch Linux Kernel patch for kernels built from source?

I buitl I kernel from source because the hotplug thing was taking for ever
I really liked the arch logo. Is there a patch or is it possilbe to add the arch logo to the kernel?
Thanks

check out the PKGBUILD for the kernel:
run "abs"
and then go to /var/abs and edit the PKGBUILD for kernel26 to see how a kernel is built in arch

  • How to get patches to official/mainline arch linux kernel?

    Hi,
I'm maintainer of compcache PKGBUILD (compcache is ~ compressed virtual swap disk).
For proper work it needs to apply some patches to kernel....
I know there is an alternative to create another PKGBUILD for a custom kernel, but this seems to me an overkill.
I would like to include these patches directly into mainline arch linux kernel....
Is this good idea? How should I proceed then?
    Tibor

    Wintervenom,
I did not know about zen kernel at all, but though it would not be very good solution, it could be the best one. So I will post an recommendation to aur to compcache, that to get proper function of compcache one should use zen kernel...
But I 'm not going to install this kernel as compcache is not so important to me to replace mainline kernel...
    tomk,
It seems that compcache will not be completely included in linux vanila kernel before 2.6.34, so that means about six months... In the meantime, compcache will not be usable with mainline arch linux kernel...
And can you please advice me how can I submit such feature request?

  • Modifying the stock arch linux kernel and kernel timer frequency

so if i understand correctly, if we want to modify the stock arch linux kernel, we have to pull it off of abs. ie "ABSROOT=. abs core/linux" then modify the pkgbuild, uncommenting out make menuconfig and setting the pkgbase name to something different than stock. ie, "linux-custom" then update the checksums followed by importing the gpg keys, ie "gpg --recv-keys 79BE3E4300411886 and gpg --recv-keys 38DBBDC86092693E" for the kernel and patches. then run makepkg -s.
we can't just run make menuconfig on the current kernel that's installed?
and if we pull the linux kernel from abs to customize, does it already come preconfigured with all the arch changes and settings? like its no different than the current one installed?
i just ask because for the most part, i like the current arch kernel, there are just a few minor things i want to change but kept everything else the same as stock arch linux kernel.
also, i herd arch uses 300hz for its timer. whats the benefits and disadvantage of using 300hz over 1000hz for a desktop system?

orlfman wrote:we can't just run make menuconfig on the current kernel that's installed?
No you can't, because the kernel then has to be compiled so the kernel will run with the different tick rate.

As I understand it from the Wiki, the ABS pulls the PKGBUILD and other arch-specific sources from the ArchLinux script server. However, I don't use the ABS, but pull the files I need directly from the ArchLinux SVN and build using makepkg[1] after making the necessary changes.

You're in for a technical discussion here. This has a reasonably friendly discussion on kernel tick rates.
Basically, higher tick rates = a higher level of timing precision & higher processor load, lower tick rates = lower level of timing precision & lower processor load.
[1] Technically, I use the clean chroot manager package, which is a wrapper for makechrootpkg (which in turn is a wrapper for running makepkg in a clean chroot if I'm not mistaken).

  • How can I do a clean uninstall of packages built from source?

I want to remove older versions of Ruby (but not the one packaged with Snow Leopard) from my development machine. I have a couple versions that were built from source that are unused now. How can I do a clean uninstall of those types of packages? I don't think there is any "make" command that will uninstall, so other than just deleting the folders that I think contains the older versions, I'm not sure how else to do it. Any ideas?

mickey13, if its Makefile doesn’t have a target for uninstalling, then the next best thing would be to run *make -n install 2>&1 > /tmp/install* to get a list of what it does at installation time, and then edit the /tmp/install file to remove the files that it copied over on installation (or to undo the edits that it made to previously existing files).

  • Use Arch Linux Disc Just For GRUB?

I already installed Arch linux, and have it up and running just fine. I have a second hard drive that has no partitions or uses as of yet. Would it be possible for me to install Windows on /sdb, install GRUB with the Arch disk to /sda, uncomment out the WIndows entry in the GRUB .conf file, and get a working dualboot?

Let's clarify exactly what you want to do.
My understanding at this point is that sda is the main boot disk and that you currently have GRUB and Arch installed on it. You want to install Windows on sdb and you think that you have to overwrite GRUB on sda during the boot process to get Windows to boot properly. You therefore want to know how you can restore GRUB on sda after a successful installation of Windows on sdb.
If that's not the case, please clarify further.
If that is the case, then I don't think you need to do it that way. Set sdb to the main boot disk and then install Windows and the Windows boot loader normally on sdb. Once that's done, reset the main boot disk to sda and then edit GRUB to chainload sdb. This way you do not need to faff about with the Windows boot loader later if you decide to boot directly into Windows at a later date. The Windows installation remains independent on its own disk which is the easiest way to dualboot imo.
As for your question about installing GRUB from the liveCD, I think your actual question is whether you can overwrite the MBR of sda with GRUB from the liveCD (which is not the same as "installing" GRUB). I think you can by jumping to that step in the setup, but I am not sure and I suggest that you wait for confirmation from someone else who is.

  • Vista laptop and Arch Linux laptop competing for an IP address

Well, when I turn on my mom's Windows Vista: Home Premium laptop at any time while my Arch Linux laptop is on, Windows says that there are two machines using the same IP address shortly after her computer connects to the router, and then it boots my Linux notebook off of the router and cuts it off from wireless. Is there any way to prevent this? We are both using DHCP.
    Specs:
    Router: Linksys WRT54G
    IP: Dynamic, DHCP
Note: I connect to the router fine when her laptop is off, but I am forced to use a 25FT LAN Cable to get Internet when she is on.

Fight! Fight! Fight! Don't take that crap, Arch!
Anyways. I'm guessing something's messed up with your router. It should be making sure no two devices get the same IP. Worst case, you could give one or both a static IP -- I do this all the time anyways, because it's easier to work with.

  • Arch Linux being used for Point of Sale terminals?

There's a 90% chance that we're going to be getting in some new point of sale terminals for our retail store.  They're standard x86 platforms that include a touchscreen, a card reader, thermal printer, a cash drawer, barcode scanner, external screen, and the like.  It would be killer to install Arch on them and work them out to be completely functional terminals.  Have any of you guys heard of some good point-of-sale software for Linux?  I'm looking to do the basics, you know, scan a product, have it come up on a screen, calculate totals with tax, run a credit card, print a receipt ... that kind of thing.

  • Linux: Kernel Preemption, To Enable Or Not To Enable

The default 2.6.4 Arch Linux kernel .config has 'CONFIG_PREEMPT=y'.
Not everyone has been happy with kernel preemption, however.  There is an interesting discussion of this under the title "Linux: Kernel Preemption, To Enable Or Not To Enable at http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/2702
The text of the article is repeated here:
"A recent bug report on the lkml complained of significant performance degradation from enabling CONFIG_PREEMPT, kernel preemption. 2.6 kernel maintainer Andrew Morton [interview] pointed out that such degradation from enabling kernel preemption is not normal, instead likely from it triggering a bug. However, an interesting conversation on the merits of kernel preemption followed.
Andrea Arcangeli, author of the 2.4 virtual memory subsystem, bluntly suggested, "keep preempt turned off always, it's useless. Preempt just wastes cpu with tons of branches in fast paths that should take one cycle instead." Andrew Morton noted, "preempt is overrated." However, he went on to point out that kernel preemption has been very useful in detecting locking bugs. He added, "it has been demonstrated that preempt improves the average latency. But not worst-case, because those paths tend to be under spinlock."
Robert Love [interview] replied directly to Andrea's comments saying, "I think you are really blowing the overhead of kernel preemption out of proportion," going on to agree with Andrew's statements. He further explained:
"I also feel you underestimate the improvements kernel preemption gives. Yes, the absolute worst case latency probably remains because it tends to occur under lock (although, it is now easier to pinpoint that latency and work some magic on the locks). But the variance of the latency goes way down, too. We smooth out the curve. And these are differences that matter."
There is more discussion and feedback with the article (including the original bug report).

I like preemption. it the "democracy" heaven of processes and threads. This post was interesting, but the point is this bug..?
if the bug is found, who can say that preemption in the kernel is not a good idea?
    thanks for posting though ;P

  • Arch linux for Ubuntu users

    Hello everyone,
When using Synaptic on Ubuntu it usually sets everything up for you so all the installed software tends to work out of the box without any need to change around configuration. Is the package manager in Arch Linux as integrated as the one from Ubuntu?
    Thanks
    Frank

I'm new to the linux scene (about 1 month now).  My most used distro (and my fallback if I mess up another distro on a seperate partition) was Ubuntu, until I figured out the basics of Arch.  After this enlightenment, I find Arch to be much easier to work with in terms of customizing apps, having the right libraries I want, and to just do daily functions.  I love to always check for updates to the system.  Ever notice in ubuntu there are about 30 repositories you have to sync with? In Arch there are the 3 basic repositories (extra, core, community) and multilib if you are on 64bit.  Working with pacman is much more efficient and controlled than apt-get imho.
One thing I hated with apt-get is that you add in 3rd party PPAs that are slow.  With Arch and its pacman + yaourt(aur) there is really no need for these 3rd party repositories as everything you can imagine is probably available in official repositories or built by the community.  Go check out https://aur.archlinux.org/ this is one of the coolest community made pool of apps around.
As mentioned before, the pacman doesn't hold your hands so be prepared to google and learn what some packages do.  For example, I am running gnome and install a KDE app called amarok.  Pacman will install everything (including KDE and qt libs) to get amarok started.  However, the only things it doesn't install (but it does tell you what) is extra depencies.
    Optional dependencies for amarok
libgpod: support for Apple iPod audio devices
libmtp: support for portable media devices
loudmouth: backend needed by mp3tunes for syncing
ifuse: support for Apple iPod Touch and iPhone
So, basically I just read through pacman's output, and either google or make a decision on what is needed.  This way my system is controlled tightly and I know more about the system.  In the future if I buy an ipod and want to sync, I'll remember there are some optional depencies available for this.  I can type "pacman -Qi amarok" and it will show me what it depends on as well as optional depencies.
Sorry for going on for so long but you get the point.

  • Arch linux time and date weirdness

A while back I unplugged my arch linux hard drive for a certain reason, and that froze the time on it, so I had to reset the time when i booted it back up.  Now, whenever I boot up I get an error message about "the last session is in the future" and I can't boot.  I adjusted the bios clock to a few months a ahead and that fixed it, but of course that's not a permanent solution.  because of this time error some secure sites like gmail and my online banking site are inaccessible because of invalid certificates.
How do i fix this problem?

    k_ibou wrote:
when you receive that message you will be prompt to enter you root password to solve the problem. And it give you the command.
    So I recommend you:
    1)  to set up the bios with the right date and hour.
    2) boot to archlinux and do as I said above. You must read carefully the text, you will see a comand.
    3) If you have more than one partition if probably that you must do it again for the partition that is set in future. Just copy the command and change / for that you need to repair.
    4) when you boot to your DE do this in console: # date --set "Y/M/D h:m"
I think with that should be ok, you can check your rc.conf in the option of hardwareclock
I tried both k_ibou's and Mardoct's solutions and neither worked.  I still get the the "...in the future" error upon booting.  I also tried one other solution, but apparently hwclock is not the same as BIOS clock.  I need to boot into Arch with the CORRECT time in the BIOS, so that I don't get that "future" error when I reboot.  I saw no command outside of "mount -o -n remount,rw /", which doesn't seem to actually do anything.
