Architects office server: Xserve or Power Mac?

We're about to purchase a dedicated server for our office. At the moment a maximum of 11 computers connect to the server locally. Over the next couple years this may go up to say 15 (all Macs except for one PC). We work directly off the server, the main applications being Vectorworks (CAD & modelling), and Artlantis (model rendering), iCal, Microsoft Office and Retrospect.
We also run an extranet but use is limited, just a wiki available when people are out of the office. And we have AFP running for a couple of people when they work from home, but they download files to their machine before working on them.
So our main requirement is local performance/speed over the network. The server is in use 8am-7pm each day so admin can take place at any other time and we don't need hot swappable drives. Our current disk use is 160 GB although only 80 GB of that is our actual data (although disk use seems to be accelerating with our ability to make ever more detailed models).
Our first thought was to get an Xserve but installation requirements has made us think again.
It'd be nice to have the ECC RAM but even this would seem of limited use to our type of needs.
Would the two gigabit ethernet ports make any difference to us?
Would there be any day-to-day advantage in configuring the Power Mac with two hard drives as opposed to one?

ECC RAM isn't going to make much of a difference in a file serving situation.
Would the two gigabit ethernet ports make any difference to us?
Maybe. There is essentially no difference between the two built-in gigabit ethernet ports on the XServe and a PowerMac with a second Apple gigabit ethernet card installed, so you can get the same physical configuration on a PowerMac.
The only advantage, though, is that *if your switch supports it* you can configure the two ports into a single trunk, giving your server a 2GB connection to the network. This should improve performance when multiple users are accessing the server. This will only work if your switch supports 802.3ad Link Aggregation.
You also gain a degree of redundancy - if one link fails for any reason you can continue to use the second link.
Would there be any day-to-day advantage in configuring the Power Mac with two hard drives as opposed to one?
Day-to-day? no, but having two drives that are mirrored will make a big difference when one of the drives fail and your server keeps ticking.
With a single drive setup, if that drive fails your server is offline and you run the risk of losing the data on that drive. By mirroring the drives you can keep running with your data intact until it's convenient for you to swap drives.

  • How do I install windows home server on my power mac?

My power mac g4 is the graphite version I think and I put the disc in my computer and booted up and I pressed alt on my windows keyboard ( i think its options on a mac keyboard) but when I got to the screen where it displays the options to boot from the only one I saw was the hard drive? I tried putting my xp disc in too and that didn't show up either?

If you just want to share files, that can be done with Mac OS X File Sharing. It is already available in "regular" Mac OS X, and all you have to do is turn it on.
For best performance, you can attain "near Hard_Drive" speeds using Gigabit Ethernet cabling and Gigabit Ethernet Switches. Wireless in quite a bit slower.

  • Very odd problem with CS2 on Power Mac G4

My office has 18 identical Power Mac G4s (1Ghz dual processor, 768MB RAM) all running OS X 10.4.9 and Adobe CS2. All except one that is, which for some reason InDesign and Photoshop always quit on startup with unexpected errors, or an unusual error saying that the application is still shutting down so cannot be opened.
I'll skip some of the troubleshooting details, but basically we've tried clean installing the OS on a separate drive and putting CS2 onto the clean install with no optional extras and it makes no difference. We tried swapping hard discs with a machine that was working fine, and the same machine continued to have the same problems while the other machine was fine. We then swapped out RAM, graphic cards, and removed all unnecessary devices and no difference, meaning logically the problem must be with one of the processors or the logic board. We sent the machine off to Apple TWICE and both times it came back with no problems found. Adobe won't help as it must be a hardware problem, and Apple won't help cause they can't find any problems. We offered them money to just exchange the logic board and processors, but they said no.
As a last resort, we tried installing CS1, foolishly assuming that as it was different software it might actually work. It actually worked even less well as Illustrator won't run either.
Does anybody have the faintest idea what the problem might be, and how we could go about fixing it?
    Many thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. We'd actually joked that the desk might be cursed, but honestly figured that if there was a low voltage problem then it would show up in other ways. The machine's been in use for over 4 years and this is the first time it's ever shown any issues. Even now it's just those 3 applications, and always at start up.
I'll try moving it to a different desk anyway and see if that helps, failing which we may have to bite the bullet and buy a new one, but we've already splashed out on 18 machines worth of OS X licences, CS2, Office, Font Folio etc. so they're not going to give us the money lightly...

  • Microsoft Office 2004 Crashing with Leopard on Power Mac G5

I'm running Leopard 10.5.1 on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) Dual 2.3 GHz. I have Microsoft Office 2004 installed and it keeps crashing. And I have installed all of the available updates for Leopard and Office 2004. Is anyone else having this problem? Office 2004 is now essentially unusable because it often crashes during save or exit.

    We have a similar problem.
10.5.2 Server, 10.5.2 Client, MS Office 2004 (All latest patches)
Its an intermittent problem that freezes MS Office when navigating through the "Save" Finder. It only appears to occur when trying to navigate through server folders and only affects MS office, all other apps are fine.

  • I've got a 10.5.8 power mac G5 but would like to upgrade to new software, lion and office 2011, but that requires an intel processor. Is this a lost cause? If not any ideas what it might cost me?

Okay looks like I didn't understand the format for these questions. I have used my Mac BookPro almost exclusively for work and my Power Mac for my home recording studio but now want the Power Mac to be a second computer for my work. So I need to upgrade to Lion and install office 2011. So, considering my subject line, any help offered is appreciated.
    Thanks.

The max OS for all Macs with a PowerPC processor is Leopard OS 10.5.x.
If you are going to consider getting a newer, but used, Mac, here's the requirements for Lion.
    Lion 10.7 System Requirements
        •    Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (most models released since late 2006 - early Intel-based Macs with Core Solo or Core Duo processors aren't compatible)
        •    2GB of memory (recommend at least 4GB -- and ideally even more, as you'll see benefits in many computing tasks)
        •    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended) for Lion download from Apple App Store; or Leopard 10.5.x if using Lion on USB drive
        •    7GB of available space (10GB recommended)
     Cheers, Tom

I can see my folders by clicking the X next to my name on the Inbox Folder.  So I have my folders now, just cannot see them in the left colum or see multiple windows on Outlook.  At this point, I can use the folders, just with limited functionality.  Thanks -Gina

  • Will "Tiger Server - Xserve Install DVD" install on non-Xserve Mac ?

    Hi All...
I had four G5 Xserves (now sold) but I still hold and own the Tiger Server DVD and Licences. I am buying an old Mac Mini that had Tiger originally installed, but has been upgraded to Leopard... my question is will my old DVD "Tiger Server - Xserve Install DVD" let me install on a mac OTHER THAN an Xserve... I am suspicious as the Licence starts off with "XSVR-...." which makes me think it may be a special install DVD configured for the Xserve only... ???
    Appreciate a confirmation either way..
    Thnx
    MOKA

Thanks very much for your comments... It does not have any other comments on it other than Version 10.4.3 and Mac OS X Server Xserve Install DVD.
I think you are likely correct and I will give it a try
    Thnx again !!

  • Cannot upgrade XServe G5 to Mac OS X Server 10.5

I have a XServe G5 running Mac OS X Server 10.4.11. I have a Mac OS X Server 10.5 Install DVD with a 10.5 Server Unlimited Client license. When I try to upgrade the installer starts and after I select English language it says that Mac OS X Server cannot be installed on this computer. I have even pulled the hard drive and put it in another XServe G5 as a second hard drive and get the same message. The only issue I can think of is that the Install DVD says that it is part of a hardware bundle. It came with a new Intel XServe that qualified for the free upgrade to OS X 10.6 server so the license is unused. This doesn't make much sense though because all of the documentation says that it should work on my XServe G5 and I even looked at the code and it looks like it will work. The firmware on the G5 is up to date, there is plenty of RAM and HD space. Since this happens so soon in the process it looks like it's drawing from a bad machine code which it shouldn't be. Any ideas?

You may be right but that's not what the documentation that comes with the DVD and the documents on the DVD state. The Getting Started PDF on my DVD says:
What You Need to Install Leopard Server
To install Leopard Server, you need a Macintosh desktop computer or server with:
An Intel processor or PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor
At least 1 gigabyte (GB) of random access memory (RAM)
At least 20 gigabytes (GB) of disk space available
An active connection to a secure Ethernet network
Check on all of those. I also looked at the code in the install package and it does return bad machine codes on certain models but not any XServe.
If I need to contact Apple I will, but that is never even implied in the documentation.

  • Turning Mac Mini into an office server

My question - do I simply use iTunes sharing? Or can I point my MacBook to the new shared library? Which is preferred.
iTunes sharing is one approach.  iTunes will have to be running
at all times on the "server" and it will allow you to selectively maintain
local media storage on various devices.  As a shared library, the
one issue with that is that only one device can access it at a time.
The configuration that I use, is I have a pair of two 2 TB drives
connected to my Airport Extreme base station.  Each contains my
complete iTunes folder (one is backup).  All my Macs open that library
when openning iTunes.  As I said, downside is I can't connect with two
different devices, but in my case that is not an issue.
When I want media for the road on my MBP, I have a smaller iTunes folder
on that that I copy the desired files to.  With that guy, I just hold down the
option key when openning iTunes and select the desired library.
Also, do I keep my iphone/ipad apps on my MacBook for syncing, or should they live on the MacMini? Never done this before so any advice helpful.
You should use only one computer for syncing, as the chosen computer
will have the back up files for the device (contacts, messages, etc.).
Using iTunes sharing, the apps and such will be on the computer
used for syncing.  In the scenario I use, they are stored on my network
drives and the backup is stored on my "syncing" computer.

  • Will office 2008 work on a power mac G5?

Hello I have an older Power mac G5 , was wondering will Office 2008 on it ? ( I have a co worker that has an unused copy for $10)

It should. I think Office 2008 was the last version for the PowerPC architecture.

  • Local Server Admin app on G5 power mac

Apologis if this is obvious, but just installed 10.5.8 server on a recycled G5 1.8GHz late 2004 power mac.
Seems to work well, but no idea how to locally admin the machine.
Trying to run Server Admin loads the program, but majority of menu options are greyed out and clicking 'new server admin window' doesn't actually open a server admin window. Means I can't manage any services locally on the machine. This is from the user admin account set-up during installation.
I can run it from an user admin account setup after installation was complete, but not from the account created during installation.
I can also run server admin remotely on my laptop.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks
    Andy

G5 Power Mac with OSX server (I think 10.5)....When using Alt or pressing C to start-up from a Snow Leopard installer......Am I missing something?
A Power Mac G5 CANNOT run Snow Leopard (10.6x).
Any use of a Snow Leopard disk WILL fail to install, format WILL produce a non-booting drive (without extra steps) and repair with a SL Disk Utility may worsen a damaged drive directory.
We also have a Time Machine backup from the Friday night before the failure.
However, we still can't start-up from the DVD to restore the Time Machine backup.
What you need to be doing is booting to the real, currently installed OS install disk and using the restore function available with it and Time Machine.
Without the install disc of the currently used OS, you're chances of recovery without reinstall may be slim.
Repair of a drive directory may be possible using fsck. Start by booting to Safe Mode.
    Read more here:
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk ...
Anyhow, stop mucking around with Snow Leopard in a G5.
Unless, of course, what you are really talking about is a Mac Pro, then we need to start all over again as a Mac Pro and a G5, save for a cosmetically similar case, are completely different.

  • Re-Purpose Power Mac G5 - Media Server, Time Machine & HD Video Playback?

apologies if this is a novice ill-informed post. i tried to find more info via a search, but didn't find a succinct answer for this.
i have a Power Mac Dual G5 2.0Ghz PCI-X w/ 3GBs Ram running Leopard. i am looking at getting a new Mac Pro or iMac Quad Cor 27" after the new year. i am also considering getting an Apple TV in the near future as well. My wife has an Intel MacBook running Leopard (upgrade to SL when I uprgade to a new machine) and we run a Airport Extreme Wireless network.
my question is this: can my G5 Tower be a good machine to pull triple duty as a media server (Itunes, Photos, etc..), Time Machine BU destination and HD Video playback to my rear projection HD TV?
i notice that it has trouble playing back HD Video. so it seems like a Video Card upgrade would be needed (Radeon X850 XT 8X AGP?), as well as, Drive Expansion (like the Sonnet G5 Drive) to facilitate additional storage.
i hate to dump my G5, if i could re-purpose. on the other hand, i don't want to invest much into an end of lifed product.
any advice or other thoughts to consider appreciated.
    thanks,
    lance

Well, It has so many options, but people that can only punch a TV remote get turned off.
I can create a Bootable clones, I can only update changed files or everything, or only certain folders, I can Time it for whenever, I can have it wait until an external Network or other drive is connected to do it's thing, it gives me far better reports of any problem(s)... I think it'll be 10 years or more before any other Bacjup APP catches up to where TB was 10 years ago!
I have a choice of about 20 different Backup options, including Apple's Time Machine... there is no comparison though many other than Apple's provisions can be quite useful & do work, just that none do as good or are updated as fast!
Even TM works if you're a drone or something!
In which case TriEdre has an even better inerface to TM clled Back in Time.

  • Power Mac G5 Information Direction (From Desktop to Server)

I have a Power Mac G5 Desktop computer. It has USB and Firewire ports. I am currently using it as a home computer, but with the recent purchase of two laptops, I've decide to use this computer as a web server. I don't necessarily need to bother everyone here with the "how to's of this", but if someone can lead me in the right direction. I have some computer skills, but I am new to the mac. I love it by the way. There is also the problem my dad and I are facing with a recipe database on Filemaker Pro. We want to publish that on the web. I have many questions and so few answers. Thanks
    Hold That Thought

Thanks so far for writing. My questions are pretty
    general.
I know Macheist is offering a web page creator
program right now in their special bundle offer. Is
this something I should use to create a web page for
    the macintosh platform?
I can't offer any advice on RapidWeaver that's in that bundle - I've never used it. I'm maybe a bit old-fashioned; I prefer to hand code my web pages.
What FTP program, firewall, automatic restart
    hardware, switch should I use?
For FTP, my personal favorite is Transmit. There are other fine FTP programs such as Fetch and Interarchy.
If you have a DSL or cable router hooked up, many of them have built-in firewalls. I have one from Belkin. The Linksys ones are also very popular. The DSL or cable routers will usually have a 4-5 port switch built-in.
I have no knowledge of automatic restart hardware, so I can't recommend anything there. On a related note, I'd strongly recommend getting a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for the G5. In the event of a power failure, the computer won't immediately shut off, which is bad for it and your files. Instead, it'll run on the UPS's battery for a little bit, giving you the chance to shut it off properly, or the OS can shut the computer down when the battery runs low. UPS's also work as surge suppressors and line conditioners in many models. The model you'll need will depend on which G5 you have, how much battery runtime you'd want, and what peripherals you need to run as well.
Is the software firewall protection in OS X
sufficient enough for the software firewall?
Probably. It wouldn't hurt to use the firewall in your router at the same time, though.
My dad is in WY and I'm in OH. I want to be able to
use a database he has and have that database update
on his database, when we tried using the public web
sharing today, we were able to see each other, but
    not our files? Why?
When you're using the webserver, only files in /Library/WebServer/Documents/ or ~/Sites/ will be visible. These would be accessed at http://youripaddress/ and http://yourip_address/~your_username/, respectively. Of course, there are default pages in both of those locations, so you won't be able to get a directory listing unless you rename or delete the index.html file.
Browsing through the other computer will only give you read access, so you won't be able to update his database via your web browser, unless you setup FileMaker to interface with Apache, and I have no experience with that.
OS X also ships with an FTP server which would allow you to upload changes to your dad's computer. I don't recall how to set it up, but I'm sure you could find instructions on how to do that elsewhere. If you go with this route, turn on both FTP Access and Remote Login. This will allow you to use Secure FTP (SFTP) and Secure Copy (SCP), both of which will encrypt your data transmissions.
I bought the PowerMac from a friend, how do I find
out exactly what is in this machine? I have two
other laptops, should I call apple and beg them to
    look up the serial number?
Go to the Apple Menu and choose 'About This Mac'. There's a button on there for More Info. This launches System Profiler (or you can just go to /Applications/Utilities/System Profiler), which gives you a very detailed report of your computer.
I have many more questions, but i'll start with
    these. Again, thank you.

  • Using a Power Mac G5 as a Gateway

I have Mac OS X Server v10.6.8 Snow Leapord server installed on an XServe and have things set up in the following order:
ISP -> Router -> Switch -> Server and other machines
