Archive Logs in every 15 minutes(Oracle 11g 64 bit  EE on Linux RHEL 4

In our production database we have very few transactions may be of few MB's in whole day but it is generating archive logs constantly in every 15 minutes(may be sometime in 14 minutes also) of file size 50 MB each and this way consume 4 GB of space in a day for archive log which is way above than expected.
I have checked archive_lag_target and value of this is 0.
Any clue why it is creating 50 MB archive log file after every 14-15 minutes?

It's easy enough to reduce redo log file size without downtime; just add new smaller redo log files, switch logfile a couple of times and drop the old redo log files.
However, if the redo logs are filling up before they switch, then this will probably only make matters worse.
If the redo logs are switching before they are full then maybe you also need to consider log_checkpoint_interval and log_checkpoint_timeout settings.
If the redo logs are filling up before they switch then use the techniques suggested by a couple of the other posters to track down the guilty SQL.

  • Issue in executing contains Query(Oracle 11g Enterprise E on Linux RHEL 4

    Oracle Version: 11.1.0.6.0
We are facing problem in executing contains Query :
1.When length of string inside contains clause goes beyond 4000 it gives error ORA-01704: string literal too long
2.We try to modify query by breaking it into multiple contains clause but it was not giving good performance (performance degrades as number of contains clauses increases.)It seems accessing same index multiple times becoming costly and taking more time. (We can see same domain Index has been accessed 3 times for 3 contains clause ()
3.We used multiple varchar(4000) type bind variable in single contains clause but giving error
ORA-29902: error in executing ODCIIndexStart() routine
ORA-01489: result of string concatenation is too long
4.We used bind variable of type clob but giving error

ORA-29902: error in executing ODCIIndexStart() routine
         ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
         DRG-50857: oracle error in drexrstart_clob
    I read from article
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/text/pdf/ot11g_new_features.pdf
That we don’t need to modified query as we had to do with SDATA(as we are doing in above examples) and optimizer will realize that query can be satisfied by the text index and will “push down” the filtering of rows into the text index processor rather than doing table access for filtering on sdata column but when I tried to write that query it was doing table access to filter for filter by column.
    My Questions:
    a.     Is it possible as mentioned in above point(point number 5) that we don’t need to write SDATA query in contains clause and optimizer will use composite index automatically.
    b.     Is there any workaround for using string literal > 4000 char in contains clause.
    c.     Why performance degrades lineally when using multiple contains clause.
    d.     Can we use in clause in SDATA and write query like this:
    i.     SDATA(queryid in ( 'q1',’q2’))
    /* Table */
    create table ContentStore (ResourceID raw(16), QueryID VARCHAR2(38),IFID VARCHAR2(38),ISTimeStamp number,ISProtocolName VARCHAR2(100),ismimecontenttype varchar2(100),ISToBeDisplayed number(1),IndexedMetaText CLOB)
    /* Index */
create index idxMeta on ContentStore (IndexedMetaText) indextype is ctxsys.context filter by queryid,IFID,istimestamp, isprotocolname, ismimecontenttype, resourceid, istobedisplayed order by istimestamp desc parameters('filter ctxsys.null_filter section group GRP_system2 sync(every "sysdate+1/(24*4)" MEMORY 209715200 PARALLEL 2) storage my_text_storage memory 209715200')parallel 2
    /* GRP_system2*/

    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/text/pdf/ot11g_new_features.pdf
That we don’t need to modified query as we had to do with SDATA(as we are doing in above examples) and optimizer will realize that query can be satisfied by the text index and will “push down” the filtering of rows into the text index processor rather than doing table access for filtering on sdata column but when I tried to write that query it was doing table access to filter for filter by column.
    /* 6.My Questions:
    */

SQE is really breakthrough for me but I dont know why it is not working in my case.I tried it onOracle 11g installaion with window and Linux both but did not get success.

  • Forcing log switch every minute.

    Hi,
I want to force a log switch every one minute how can i do it?
What should be the value of fast_start_mttr_target?
Does a checkpoint force a log switch?
Do i need to only reduce the size of redo log to a small size?
How can i make sure that a log switch will happen after a particular time period for ex. 1Minute,2 minute.
I want to force a log switch every minute because i want to send the archive redo log to standby database so that not more than 1 minute changes in database are lost. I am using 10g R2 on windows 2003 server.
I am unable to find a solution. Any help?

    Hi,
I want to force a log switch every one minute how
can i do it? yes with archive_lag_target parameter
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/onlineredo.htm#sthref934
What should be the value of fast_start_mttr_target?incremental or normal checkpoint "fast instance recovery/downtime concerned" introduced from oracle 8, this feature is enabled with the initialization parameter FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET in 9i.
fast_start_mttr_target to database writer tries to keep the number of dirty blocks in the buffer cache low enough to guarantee rapid recovery in the event of a crash. It frequently updates the file headers to reflect the fact that there are not dirty buffers older than a particular SCN.

Does a checkpoint force a log switch? log switch force to checkpoint ,checkpoint never force to log switch.
Do i need to only reduce the size of redo log to a
small size?depends yours SLA how far you can risk the data ,but it will effect yours database performance ,recommended to set the size of log which should imply the log swtich after filling to 20 mins, its a trade off risk vs perofrmance.

  • 6 Log Files every minute

I have a networked HP All In One Office Jet Pro L7500 running on Windows XP.
I removed all HP Software except the drivers. I was constantly getting messages from HP Monitoring SW that my printer was connected, disconnected, connected and on and on and on.
In addition, my temp folder would create 6 HP log files every minute. I hoped removing everything but the drivers would fix this - no.
I checked to see if there were updated drivers and I seem to have the latest.
How can this be fixed? My computer is freezing up if I do not delete these every few hours, also as it writes the files, my computer will slow down to a halt. The files are typically 1K but every 10 files or so will be around a 1MB.
    HELP!!
Next step is removing the drivers and buying a better printer without this issue and trust me it will not be an HP if that is the case.

This is worrying to me because
    A. nobody has answered yet
    B. I have the same issue with an HP Photosmart D7400
I love the printer and the network caqpability, but it goes crazy with the log files to where it will eventually clog the hard drive on my Windows XP machine.
HP should reconsider the banner across the top of this paqe saying "Join the Conversation" if the chance of people doing so are slim.

  • DB13: Execute Redo log backup of remote Oracle 11g database fails

    Dear Experts,
First of all I have to state I am not very experienced in administrating (Oracle) databases, but I would like to ask you all the following:
We run two SAP Systems with each their own database on the same host:
    1. SAP SRM ABAP system on Oracle 11g
    2. SAP NetWeaver WebAS Java (Portal) on Oracle 11g
We would like to schedule backups of the Java database in transaction code DB13 on the SRM ABAP system.
    Actions already taken:
    - We have maintained the proper database connection to the Java database and have set file system permissions correctly (according SAP Note 102570). Connection in transaction DB02 is fine and stats are showing for both databases.
    - We have maintained enviroment settings for <SID>_ORACLE_HOME and <SID>_SAPDATA_HOME and for the shell (csh).
    - Destination SAPXPG_DBDEST_<host> is maintained in SM59.
When we schedule a Redo log backup of Java System in DB13 and execute immediately, we receive the following error:
Process died due to signal 11
SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE mislukt voor BRARCHIVE - oorzaak: unknown
    Any tips?
Thanks in advance & Best regards,
    Jan Laros

    Hi Eduardo,
Thank you for your reply.. Today I am at another customer, so I can not check it. But is seems to me that the BRTOOLS are up-to-date as we installed the system fresh and imported the Support Package and kernel updates right afterwards.
I will check which BRTOOLS are used tonight, anyway.
    Best regards,
    Jan

  • Oracle 11g Express for Ubuntu Linux

Just like Oracle provided express edition for linux for 10g, will there be an easy to install express edition of 11g for linux? I mean via apt-get or debs or synaptic. Of course, synaptic being the easiest I have EVER seen oracle install on linux.
I want to try Linux as a developer, but installing 11g on linux the normal way is a pain. I do not want to spend days trying to install 11g on linux. I want to get busy doing something with 11g such as write queries and design databases.

    Yes, sigh.
If only people could write what they mean!My apologies for not being adept at the language. But we have both been wrangling with my lack of
language skills for years, so we should be used to it by now.
    >
Are you saying EE when you mean XE, perhaps? No. I meant EE using synaptic. Which does not exist. Which may explain why some people think the installation is difficult. The tools they have learned are not there and the fight to find or learn the alternatives is not pleasant.
And even the simple stuff may seem. difficult. Some people, including modern developers with IDEs, are very concerned about the difficulties of editing in Linux. In my Oracle on Linux courses, I see grown men near tears when I tell them to edit sysctl.conf ... you should see the visible relief when I describe gedit or kate.
You have been doing the baseline install for years - Back in the Red Hat 9 days, I'd been handing out the HJR Linux install (with your written permission) in my classes for years. So I expect us to get it done in a short time. Cookie-cutter boot, thru install Linux & Oracle, to tnsping shouldn't take us (you and me) more than 1.5-2.5 hours. (Especially if all we want is a basic data dump.)
But ... reading the docco, translating the steps into a manual sequence, and finding and running the synaptic equivalent to the documented rpm commands - aka a synaptic install - can take days. Heck, just reading the docco to get it straight under a certified distro can take days.
After that, OUI is simple, and (if the pre-reqs are clean) nearly fool-proof.
BTW - why do we have to fight with the pre-reqs? Why can there not be more variants of the SUSE-supplied orarun.rpm to do all that manual stuff?

    hello,
    have a look at this'
ORA-13711:Some snapshots in the range [string, string] are missing key statistics.
Cause:      Some AWR tables encountered errors while creating one or more
snapshots in the given range. The data present in one or more of these missing
tables is necessary to perform an ADDM analysis.
Action:      Look in DBA_HIST_SNAP_ERROR to find what tables are missing in
the given snapshot range. Use the ERROR_NUMBER column in that view

  • Log switch and checkpoint - Oracle 11g

    Hi
I've read a documentations and forum, but I can't find clean explanation. I'd like to ask - does switch log trigger checkpoint? I've heard, that from 8i version checkpoint doesn't occur on log switch, but can't find information
    in documentation.
    Thanks awfully for help.
    Regards

before 8i , logfile switch caused full checkpoint
8i and above , logfile switch no longer causes full checkpoint , it causes a "log switch checkpoint"
A log switch checkpoint write the contents of "some" dirty buffers to the disk
