ARD Viewing broken after Snow Leopard upgrade

Hi all!
Most of our Snow Leopard installs went fine, however, one Mac mini is still being troublesome. It's a Core Duo Mac mini connected via Ethernet. Viewing or Controlling the computer from ARD console gives a black screen. Console.app on the client computer reports that AppleVNCServer crashes (see attached log).
I've repaired permissions multiple times and reinstalled ARD client several times. Remote controlling via a simpler VNC client works when ARD is set to accept VNC connections on the client.
+sudo lsof -i :5900+ produces the following:
$ sudo lsof -i :5900
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
AppleVNCS 403 wildam 10u IPv6 0x03a921f0 0t0 TCP *:vnc-server (LISTEN)
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot!

Update: After having to re-explain the entire case because the last guy didn't write anything down, and after having to re-convince the 2nd level support guy that this is in fact a bug, I've got the case escalated to engineering, and they'll come back to me on wednesday next week (I can't, of course, speak directly to the engineer).
The problem presents itself with a fresh install of 10.6 and ARD Client 3.3.1 with a resolution of 1366x768. Symptoms are a black screen in the ARD console, with the text "Connecting…" flashing on the screen. The process AppleVNCServer crashes on the client at this time, see report over.
I'll keep you all updated!

  • Cursor focus in text fields in Safari broken after Snow Leopard upgrade

Hi, I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my Macbook. Since then, whenever I am typing in a text field in Safari (e.g. Gmail's compose message contents field), the cursor freezes. I cannot move the cursor with either arrow keys or the mouse. I cannot select text. The only way to move the cursor is to click on a different text field (e.g. the email subject field in Gmail) and then click back on the location I want in the first text field. But even after that, I cannot move the cursor within that field aside from typing characters -- I still have to click back and forth between different text fields.
I have not had this problem in Firefox.
This seems like a minor thing but it makes Gmail unusable in Safari, which basically means Safari is useless to me now. Still, I prefer to use Safari for general web browsing since it is much quicker, so I am hoping someone can recommend a fix (preferably not going back to Leopard, although that is an option via a SuperDuper restore).

    HI,
Other Safari users have experienced this issue but the issue resolved itself after uninstalling the Flash player plugin, then reinstalling, then repairing permissions.
Go here and follow the instructions. Uninstall Flash
Install the most recent version of Flash here.
    Now repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • MathType integration broken after Snow Leopard Upgrade

MathType 6.0 no longer seems to work with Keynote after I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to insert an equation from MathType it inserts the equation, but only as a HUGE image file that has to be resized. Worse, I can no longer edit equations in MathType once they have been inserted into Keynote. Even if I select and copy in Keynote and paste into MathType. Everything still works correctly on my machine that I haven't installed Snow Leopard on.
It's a big problem for me because my presentations use a lot of equations. Any ideas for a cure?

    Quit Keynote
    move the preferences file:
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Keynote. plist
    on the desktop
    restart Keynote.
Maybe you will be forced to re-link MathType.
Tell us if it restores a normal behavior.

  • Isight no longer works after snow leopard upgrade

my isight no longer is available directly after snow leopard upgrade on my macbook black. Anyone else with the same problem? The isight does not show up in 'about this mac' under USB and I tried resetting SMC and PRAM.

    Hi,
In Leopard there was an App called iSight Update app that was in Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services
This does not seem to be there in Snow Leopard.
An issue with some computers with the camera was that in System Preferences > Displays the Colours needed to be set to Millions.
Also check the Hard Drive/System/Library/Extensions folder and see that you have the Apple_iSight.kext (this is likely to handle the Internal iSights as well).
    One last thing.
Some Web sites can make use of the camera using Flash.
If that tab is still open the Browser may have use of the camera.
It sounds like you have done computer restarts and this will not be the case unless the browser is set to go back to that page.

  • Wifi problems since 10.5.8 Update. Even after Snow Leopard Upgrade.

Wifi problems since 10.5.8 Update. Even after Snow Leopard Upgrade.
Is there any way to use a 10.5.7 wireless .kext files on Snow Leopard? And where can I find the files?

Ok, I have the fix!! After several frustrating days it finally just works.
    The process:
Upgrade your Macs to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Powercycle your modem AND time capsule / airport TWICE
Reset your time capsule with a pin or paperclip on the back
Follow the prompts to setup your time capsule / airport access
    -- On your Macs
    Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP
Click "Renew DHCP Lease" then click "Ok"
    Click Apply
    Turn off Airport
    Turn Airport on
    IT WORKS!!!
One of the magical people at tech support walked me through it earlier today. The whole process took about 1.5 hrs because Show Leopard takes about an hour to install on one machine.
    Hope this helps-

  • Receiving email after Snow Leopard upgrade

Everything works fine after Snow Leopard upgrade 10.6.2 except I cannot RECEIVE email. I have checked with Comcast and verified my settings for both incoming and outgoing POP mail.

Hello and welcome to the Discussions.
I had no problems of this sort when upgrading to Snow Leopard or 10.6.2. Were you already running Snow Leopard in an earlier version, or did you upgrade from Tiger (10.4.11) directly to SL 10.6.2?
Quit Mail, and in the Finder open Home/Library/Mail. Locate any files named to include MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded. At the root level of the Mail folder you should find one named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3, but look in each POP account folder also. There if you find any other, including MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 delete them from each POP account folder -- they are not used in versions of Mail later than 2.1.3.
    Relaunch Mail and test.

  • Can't Print After Snow Leopard Upgrade

I have a home network centered around an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. The base station is wired to a Linksys network switch which, in turn, is wired to two computers - an Apple Dual G5 running OS X 10.4.11 and a and Mac MIni which, until yesterday was running Leopard. I have an HP Laserjet P1006 connected to the USB port of the AEBS and, until yesterday, everything worked fine. Yesterday, I ran the Snow Leopard Upgrade on my Mini and now the Mini won't print to the HP over the network. If I connect the printer directly to the MIni, it works fine; as soon as I reconnect the printer to the AEBS, the Mini will no longer print. The lights on the printer will flash but nothing comes out. I have downloaded the HP Printer driver update from Apple but this didn't help. I have reset the AEBS, to no avail. The G5 running Tiger has no problems with printing. And, my daughter just got a brand-new MacBook Pro loaded with Snow Leopard from the factory and she can print to the HP over the network without any problems.
    Any ideas?

When I upgraded iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6 it also stopped printing wirelessly to Brother MFC6490CW.
I thought I had this same issue with my Epson printer when wireless printing. Actually, in SL, wireless printing is very slow at least with an Epson. Takes about 5 minutes or so for wireless print to even start. When checking the printing status app, it will start out saying "printer ready." Then after a few minutes it will say "looking for printer." A few minutes later it will say "printing."
When I go into the next room where the printer is, the green light is "flashing" letting me know that "printing" has started.
So I guess what I am trying to say is to check the printing status app after you click "print." It's possible "Brother" is just as slow as "Epson."

  • PS3 and Safari crashes after Snow Leopard upgrade

How is everyone enjoying the crashes after their Snow Leopard upgrade? I can't save a photo using PS3, or download a photo to flickr or facebook without a crash. PS3 crashes, Safari crashes and work flow is at a crawl? Spoke with tech yesterday and they told me that this would stop if I downloaded Snow Leopard again, which I did, but the problem wasn't resolved. To top it off, I lost permissions on the iMac and can't use the computer. Please tell me where all of the accolades came from? Were the reviews done by people who actually work on their computers or by people who play on them? Oh, and another thing, lost my wireless access to the router and had to start all over. Be careful here, this has not been fun!

Excuse me, I meant to write CS3 instead of PS3.

  • Finder search "aliases" missing after Snow Leopard upgrade

I'm dealing with a crazy annoyance after upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard - currently running 10.6.2
I have 2 duplicate, external, 1TB WestDig Drives. I have no problems accessing these drives from the Finder, but if I use Finder search or Smart Folders, the corresponding folders on the external drives never open on the first try. I always receive the message:
+The alias “…” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.+
On the second try, search result folders open fine and I don't seem to have any further problems with a folder once it has been opened successfully from within search.
It seems that after my Snow Leopard upgrade every search on the external drive reveals "missing" folder aliases although the "aliases" appear as regular folder icons.
I tried re-indexing Spotlight but this did not solve the problem. I also trashed my plist files for Finder and Spotlight which didn't help either.
External Drive volume info from Terminal:
    +drwxrwxr-x 21 782 Mar 14 17:18 PHOTOGRAPHY ARCHIVE+
FWIW I've found others having similar problems on the Apple forums HERE and HERE. I've tried their suggested PathFinder workaround without success.
This is driving me bonkers because it renders Smart Folders somewhat useless. Additionally, these external drives work fine on my old installation of 10.5 Leopard
    Thanks for any help!

    HI,
    Try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Sharpness Control Crashes my Mac after Snow Leopard Upgrade - Help!

Hi everyone, I have a strange problem since upgrading to Snow Leopard.
Now, whenever I click on the sharpness control in iPhoto, for any photo, it immediately causes the screen to go haywire and the Mac completely freezes up. The only way I can continue is to hard reset holding the power button.
On restart, the Mac shows no sign of a crash, the crash reporter does not fire up and there is nothing to indicate a crash in the iPhoto log files.
All other iphoto controls seem to work fine. I can scroll through my library, everything there is perfect, tone controls, exposure, they all work just fine. As soon as I even touch sharpness, bingo I get an instant lock up.
Can anyone help as this makes my iphoto basically useless?
    Regards
    David

    David:
A first fix attempt should be to delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Relaunch iPhoto, reset your iPhoto preferences, background color, etc. and try again.
If that does't help launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #3 and #5.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • IDVD Quality Changed after Snow Leopard Upgrade

I created two different iDVD projects (slide shows with music) and burned them to DVDs - great quality, no problems with transitions, or quality of slides displayed. These copies were viewed in a BlueRay player, etc. After I upgraded to Snow Leopard I made two more copies without adding anything to the projects or changing the project settings. Quality is now terrible. The transitions are choppy, and each slide is displayed slightly less bright than it should be, then it jumps to a normal brightness, then goes back to a dimmer setting as the photos change. This did not occur on the originals before the OS upgrade. If I run the project on my MAC it all looks fine. This problem comes up after burning to DVD.
    Any ideas?

    Hi TJ1955
Welcome to apple discussions. Sorry to hear about the issues with burning to disc you are experiencing at the moment. I'm not sure I can help with this issue without being directly in front of your mac and seeing what's going on. So I'll simply supply you with the apple KB aticle detailing / troubleshooting burn issues to dvd.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1583?viewlocale=en_US
If you opt to return to the forum we'll also need more info on the mac model you are currently using and which third party items you have connected to it (if any). Lastly we will need to know how much available hard drive space is remaining on the boot volume (your main startup HD) as well as what type or brand of dvd's you are currently using and if it varied from the original /first burn.
As a final resort you may wish to try the following. Burn your iDvd project to a disc image from the file menu within iDvd (provided you have the available HD space). The disc image acts exactly like a dvd so use apple's dvd player to test for proper playback. Assuming it plays exactly as expected, then burn to Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Maxell Dvd-R at 4x. Please avoid using Memorex while we troubleshoot your issue here. This latter brand of dvd's tends to introduce additional variables into the equation making troubleshooting all that much more complicated. Thereafter, (assuming we resolve the issue) feel free to use whatever brand works best for you and your mac.
Hope this helps but if not come on back.

  • Lightroom and MAC Pro (intel) after Snow Leopard Upgrade?

I have heard several horror stories about serious operational problems with Lightroom and MACs after they have upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
I have been trying to get to the bottom of it, but all I have been able to glean is that yes, there are some issues, but I can't find out cause and effect.
Since I heard of the things I have not opened any Adobe Software, and won't until I can be assured that I too don't experience the same horror story.
Are there any people out there that have experienced any of these problems?  If so, do you know what caused them, and, more importantly, how to fix them?
Thank you for any help and direction you can provide.

Some users have reported that Edit in Photoshop CSx functionality is partially broken (e.g. Open as Smart Object launches Photoshop, but image doesn't actually open).
With Photoshop (and many other applications) there are reports of the application crashing when the user tries to save a JPG file.
    Source of problem? Snow Leopard
Is it really the problem that some would have you believe? Nope
Are there any workarounds? Ask Apple
BTW: I use Snow Leopard and don't have a problem recommending it to others.

  • Cannot Scan after Snow Leopard Upgrade

After I upgraded to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro & Mac Pro, I have not been able to scan from my HP Photosmart 8180 All-In-One printer. The printer works fine and I can connect to the HP for a scan; but, when I try to scan I get the same error during the scan on both computers. I have reloaded the original HP software drivers and made sure they were current prior to the above, so I need some direction on how to proceed.

Here - this might fix it:
    * Cause *
This issue might have occurred if you are trying to scan using the previous version HP Software and Drivers or due to the device driver/ software conflicts.
This issue may also occur if the previous version HP Software and Drivers are conflicting with the Generic built-in Drivers that are available in Mac OS X 10.6 or due to the communication error between the Printer and the Mac Computer.
    * Information *
The latest HP printer drivers, scan software, and utility for most of HP All-in-One Printers are included in Mac OS X 10.6 by default. So, no need to reinstall or download any HP software for full print, scan and utility functionality.
Scanning: The Scanning interface is now built into Snow Leopard and supported with the Apple Image Capture application. Instructions follow.
NOTE: HP Scan Pro software (from Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5) is not supported in Snow Leopard. The HP icon for HP Device Manager still in the dock after upgrade is not functional and should be removed.
NOTE: Scan support from pushing the Scan button on the printer is not supported with this version of the scan interface built into Snow Leopard. Scan functionality is supported by scanning directly from the computer.
    * HP Full Feature Software and Drivers for Mac OS X v10.6
However, in checking the Software and Drivers downloads page for your HP All-in-One Printer, I am glad to see that the latest version (10.3) HP Full Feature Software and Drivers are available to work with Mac OS X 10.6 Operating System for full Print and Scan Features.
Once you install the latest version HP Full Feature Software and Drivers, you can scan using the HP Scan.App application from your Mac Computer running Mac OS X 10.6.
    * Resolution *
In order to resolve this issue, I would request you to follow the steps provided below as they are mentioned and let us know the status of this issue.

    5. Follow any on-screen instructions.
    * Scan using the HP Scan.app Software in Mac OS X v10.6
After you install the latest version HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers successfully, please follow the steps provided below to scan using the HP Scan Software.
    1. Click on Go from the top menu bar.
    2. Click on Applications.
    3. Click on Hewlett Packard Folder.
    4. Double-click on HP Scan.App.
    5. Click on the Documents and then click on Scan.
    6. The scanned output will appear in Scan window and prompts you to scan another page.
    7. If there is any other page to scan, then please click on yes otherwise, click on No.
    8. In Scan Window, please click on Send option.
    9. Select the appropriate destination under the “Choose a Destination, or Task, for Scanned items” to send the scanned output and then click on Send to send the scanned output to the appropriate destination.
    * Scanning using the inbuilt Scan Interface
There are three ways to perform scanning using the generic built-in Software and Drivers from your HP All-in-One Printer:
    Ø Preview program
    Ø Image Capture program
    Ø System Preferences > Print & Fax
Important: After you open the scan interface, it is important to select the correct mode (Flatbed or Document Feeder) for the source of the scan image. Your HP All-in-One may have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or a flatbed lid. By default, Document Feeder will be the automatically selected Mode for any devices that have an ADF. You must select Flatbed if you want to scan directly from the glass flatbed and not the Document Feeder.
For more information about Scanning and Image Capture, open the Help menu from Mac OS X 10.6 and type in your question.
Method one: Scan from the Preview application
    1. Click the Apple Preview icon in the dock to open the Preview application.
    2. From the Preview File pull-down menu, choose Import from Scanner.
    3. Choose the HP Photosmart, Officejet, or Deskjet All-in-One.
The scan interface opens. Click Show Details to view settings and options.
Method two: Scan from the Image Capture application
    1. In the Applications folder, select and open Image Capture.
    2. In the list of devices on the left, click your HP All-in-One.
Networked devices appear in the Shared list.
The scan interface opens. Click Show Details to view settings and options.
Method three: Scan from Print & Fax > Printer browser
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. Click Print & Fax.
    3. In the list of printers on the left side of the dialog, select the HP All-in-One to view the options in the Print & Fax window.
    4. Click the Scan tab, and then click Open Scanner.
    The Printer Browser window appears.
    5. Click the Scan icon at top right of the toolbar to launch scanning.
The scan interface opens. Click Show Details to view settings and options.
Important Gotcha: If the Scan or Print icons do not appear in the Printer Browser window toolbar, you need to delete the current HP printer queue and add a new one, as follows:
    1. Close the Printer Browser window to return to the Print & Fax preference pane. Or, go directly to the System Preferences > Print & Fax pane.
    2. Select your HP printer in the list on the left.
    3. Click the - sign at the bottom of the list to delete the product from the list.
    4. Click the + sign at the bottom of the list to add the product back to the list.
    5. Select your HP printer, and then click Add to create a new print queue.
The next time you open the Printer Browser window, the Print and Scan icons should appear in the toolbar, providing access to Image Capture.

  • Rocketfish bluetooth keyboard can't auto connect after snow leopard upgrade

    Hi,
I have one of the newer model 2GHz Mac Mini's which I bought back in March. I've been using a Rocketfish model RF-ABTKB bluetooth keyboard (which I had been previously using on a windows system before getting the mac). Up to now, the keyboard had worked fine. Whenever I booted the mac, I'd use my bluetooth mouse to go to the bluetooth menu, scroll down to "Rocketfish Bluetooth Keyboard", and then select "connect" out of the sub menu, then would click the "connect" button on the underside of my keyboard and it would connect, every time.
I bought Snow Leopard on Friday & upgraded my machine. Since the upgrade, I no longer see the "connect" option for the keyboard in the bluetooth menu. The only option I see now in that sub-menu for the keyboard is "Open Keyboard Preferences...". If I go to the preferences window, click "set up bluetooth keyboard" at the bottom of the window and go through the pairing process again (going through the discovery process, entering the PIN that the mac generates, etc) it pairs and works fine (I'm actually using it to type this post). If I look at the keyboard sub-menu in the bluetooth menu after it's paired/connected, the "Disconnect" option is now available. The disconnect option itself is no surprise, it had been there in the past, but I thought it's odd that I can still see the disconnect option but not the connect option.
When I disconnect the keyboard (by either selecting that Disconnect option or by just not using it for 5 minutes & letting it go to sleep) the keyboard disconnects, the "shadow icon" fades on to the screen showing the keyboard is no longer connected, and I can go back to the bluetooth menu & still not see the same Connect option that used to be there before the upgrade.
My generic bluetooth mouse (doesn't have a brand name) continues to work with no issues. I called the support number for Rocketfish (which is really just a consumer electronics sub-brand of Best Buy), they said that their keyboard is fully compliant with Mac OS X and if the connect option is no longer showing up for the keyboard in the bluetooth menu, Apple must have done something that changed the way the mac is handling bluetooth.
Also, I did try removing the keyboard from the Bluetooth control panel in System Preferences and re-adding it from scratch, no change.
    Anybody have any ideas???

    Hello N:
I suspect that there has been some sort of incompatibility introduced. However, since this is an Apple forum, I recommend that you pursue the problem with "rocketfish." If is suggested troubleshooting steps, I might confuse the issue further as I would be focussed on Apple devices.
FWIW, no such problem has surfaced with Apple keyboards or mice. I am not trying to sell you one, I do not work for Apple.

  • Can't download files after Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hello all,
yesterday I upgraded my leopard to snow leopard, since then I cannot download files with safari (also tried firefox, camino). When I click some link it looks like its going to start downloading but it doesn't. Most of the links are .dmg files. I have tried these steps so far but the problem still occurs.
    1) Repair the Disk Permissions.
    2) Downloaded onyx to clean the system.
    3) Cleaned the safari cache and settings, as well as the plugins directory.
    4) installed firefox and camino but they act the same.
    5) I uninstalled iGetter (if I copy the link location and add it to iGetter I can download the file).
    6) I created a new User to check if the problem was system wide or with the user account. The problem is the same in the new user account as well.
Any ideas what to try next ?
    Thank you all in advance.
    John.
    ps: I have 10.6.2 and safari 4.04.

Try using your OnyX to clean the LaunchSevices caches, or use Terminal.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know
