Arm-elf
Hi,
Ive downloaded the cross-arm-elf packages from community. And I got a few problems with it:
First I needed the stdio.h file, which seems not to be included in the package...?
further, the arm-elf-ld is not configured to use sysroot..
I get these two error-messages when I follow the "gnuarm.org -> support" example -- which I thought would work. I find this pretty uphill to make this work, but I will dick deeper into it.
I've made et work partly by adding another include-directory
$ arm-elf-gcc -mcpu=arm7tdmi -mthumb -O2 -g -c hello.c
hello.c:1:19: error: stdio.h: No such file or directory
$ arm-elf-gcc -mcpu=arm7tdmi -mthumb -O2 -g -I /usr/local/arm/arm-elf/include/ -c hello.c
$ arm-elf-gcc -mcpu=arm7tdmi -mthumb -o hello hello.o -lc/usr/bin/arm-elf-ld: this linker was not configured to use sysroots
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
Anyway, please post fixes and let me know if I'm the only one who has this problem
the c-code is just a hello world one
#include <stdio.h>
int main(void)
printf "hello world \n"
return 0;
You are not alone to have this problem:
/usr/bin/arm-elf-ld: this linker was not configured to use sysroots
I got this when trying to compile a basic "blink" example program.
Does someone knows how to solve this ?
thx,
Olivier

Cross-arm-elf-gcc-base 4.3.2-1 misses libgcc.a
Hi!
I installed cross-arm-elf-gcc-base and cross-arm-elf-binutils and tried to cross compile a kernel.
LD arch/arm/boot/compressed/vmlinux
/usr/bin/arm-elf-ld: libgcc.a: No such file: No such file or directory
In fact it's missing in the package
Do I need to install anything else?
cheers
EDIT:
I build the cross-arm-elf-gcc-base package using ABS. I added the libgcc targets to the build and install line like this:
make all-gcc all-target-libgcc || return 1
make DESTDIR=${startdir}/pkg install-gcc install-target-libgcc || return 1
Now it works like it should

Create a cross compiler for arm
I am struggling with building a cross toolchain, essentially it boils down to building these packages (in thegiven order):
binutils gcc-base newlib gcc
When done I am trying to compile a dummy cpp algorithm (euler gcd/ggT search) with no includes.
What the cross toolchain spits at me is the following:
$ arm-unknown-eabi-gcc -march=armv5te ./euklidisch_ggt.c -o ./euklidisch_ggt.bin.armv5te
/usr/bin/arm-unknown-eabi-ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/gcc/arm-unknown-eabi/4.5.2/../../../../arm-unknown-eabi/lib/libc.a when searching for -lc
/usr/bin/arm-unknown-eabi-ld: skipping incompatible /usr/arm-unknown-eabi/lib/libc.a when searching for -lc
/usr/bin/arm-unknown-eabi-ld: cannot find -lc
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I wrote a little script to build it (as I got pretty much fed up doing it all by hund, round #7 just failed again)
Note: it is semi-automated, you will still be requested to give your passwd to agree with install and blah
Note: use it with arg "cleanup" to get rid of old installed packages (run as root)
Note: use it to compile as user
#!/bin/bash

I already read linux from scratch howto for building cross compilers, though partly it contradicts with AUR comments especially in regard to --with-sysroot and --with-build-sysroot
If someone can please shed some light on this, the gcc doc is not very helpfull
Note: I know that a bare metal arm elf cross compiler exisis in the archlinux repository but that is not sufficient as I need different targets with some special options (where can I get the PKGBUILD from packages within the ABS?)Current targets are armv7vfpv3 and armv5te softfloat, this compiler(s) (afaik softfloat and hardfloat can not be put into one compiler, correct me if I am wrong) will be used as basis for kernel compileing for these architectures plus the basic packages (afaik called bootstrapping).
And I knew it was not really newby stuff, but .. well .. after searching like 5 mins for an appropriate subforum I gave up and posted it just here, sorry
The point is this is the basis for a lot of core packages and I just want to do it right (and atm it ain't working at all )

Cross compiling for ARM (Android)
Hello, everyone. I just rooted my Android phone (an LG Ally), and decided that a fun way to try and use my newfound freedom would be to cross-compile some programs for it like Busybox, Lua, a fresh copy of Python, and possibly even pacman. (Being able to use makepkg to compile phone software would be awesome.)
I found the cross-arm-elf-binutils and cross-arm-gcc-base packages in community, so now the question is...how do I use them? From what I understand, it essentially comes down to bulding the software like normal, but using the executables from the cross-compiling package instead of the system installed ones. Is that basically right? Can you recommend any articles on cross-compiling in general, and for Android in particular? You should check out the Android NDK documentation. The NDK comes with a cross compiler specifically for android, with the correct versions of libraries, etc. It comes with some examples showing how to build stuff for it.
EDIT: There is also an AUR package for it.

Booting problems with systemd, lvm, linux-ck-corex
Hi everyone,
since Friday I got some complications while booting my system.
I use systemd, pulseaudio, bluez, network-manger, gnome and gdm as login manager.
Every partition (root, home) without the boot and crypted swap partition is within a lvm volume group.
Xserver with gdm starts but the login mask does not appear. (only the background, mousepointer, topbar with clock, energy etc. are shown)
Switching to the getty2 works, but after typing username and password, nothing happens.
Only some messages from systemd are poping up, saying it couldn't mount my home partition (timeout).
That explains why I couldn't login.
Shutting down the system via the powerkey works.
Starting via a system rescue disk, mounting everything (including my home partition) and chrooting works fine.
Journalctl shows that there are more problems.
The network-manager times out.
Gnome-shell with consolekit-daemon and Pulseaudio fails to communicate with bluez over the dbus.

If you're using an initrd, you may not have the appropriate modules installed. If you're not using an initrd, then the kernel probably needs LVM support compiled in (not as a module) and could be solved by fixing that. I have never used the ck-patchset, but this should give you an additional data point.
Also comment=systemd.automount will be deprecated soon as I understand it; if you have a need for automounting, x-systemd.automount should be used instead. -
USB wifi adapter can only handle one request or socket at a time
I have a usb wifi adapter that I bought recently. The strange thing is that if I'm doing only one thing that is using the network (e.g. downloading a file) it works good and fast. But say I'm downloading a file and I do ANYTHING else that uses the network (e.g. just opening a browser at google.ca), the download comes to a stop. Then if I close the browser, the download starts up again a couple seconds later, good and fast.
Another example is, say I'm in a Google Hangouts (video chat) session. As long as that is the only thing I have running, the chat works fine. If I open a second browser window, then the chat gets super choppy and pretty much un-usable until I close the second window.
So basically it seems like I can have only one open socket at a time, or else it can handle only one request at a time. Also, most webpages open very slowly as a result because the browser only seems to be able to download one static file at a time (e.g. js and css files needed by the page).
I'm sure it's a problem with the usb wifi adapter because I didn't have these problems when I was on a wired connection, and I have other devices using wifi (e.g. laptops and tablets) that don't have this problem either.
Rather than paste a bunch of output from commands, please kindly tell me what to run in order to gather any useful info.
Thanks,
Edit: The adapter is an ASUS USB n-53 (N600).
Last edited by Pacopag (2014-07-18 14:36:20)I was exploring the CD that came with the device. Turns out there are Linux drivers on it. I didn't install any drivers, as wicd detected it automatically. I'm wondering if changing drivers might help. Can someone help me interpret the installation instructions?
Here are the instructions

Any interest in a repo of cross-compilers?
I recently had to make a couple of cross-compilers for a project that I was working on and wondered if there was any interest in a repo for cross-compilers?
These are compilers that I know I can easily build (target triplet in brackets)
linux-32bit:
arm (arm-none-linux-gnueabi)
ppc (powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu)
mips (mips-unknown-linux-gnu / mipsel-unknown-linux-gnu)
sparc (sparc-unknown-linux-gnu)
linux-64 bit:
alpha (alpha-unknown-linux-gnu)
mips64 (mips64-unknown-linux-gnu / mips64el-unknown-linux-gnu)
sparc64 (sparc64-unknown-linux-gnu)
ppc64 (powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu)
hppa (hppa-unknown-linux-gnu) [probably...]
other:
windows (i686-pc-mingw32)
And some that I think can be done and would be quite interesting...
bsd (i686-pc-kfreebsd-gnu) - the start to the often suggested ArchBSD maybe...
hurd (i686-pc-gnu) - ArchHURD anyone? I didn't think so!
So, would these be useful for anyone and are there any other architectures people would like?
For those that are interested, my mingw32 compiler PKGBUILDs are here. They are quite different to those in the [community] repo...I'll be doing lots of stuff with arm since I'm starting to make some homebrew apps for nds.
But I'm already using:
pkg: cross-arm-elf-binutils
pkg: cross-arm-elf-gcc-base -
I have a LPC 229x evaluation board. I wrote a simple application with labview. It sends "Hello world" string to serial port.
When I build the project I get this error message:
Linker error occurred
/opt/ecos/gnutools/arm-elf/bin/arm-elf-ld: unrecognised emulation mode: structure-size-boundary=8
cported emulations: armelf
What's wrong here?
Thanks for your help.Hi,
LabVIEW Embedded passes this option to the linker: '-mstructure-size-boundary=8'. Apparently, the linker got confused with this option. It would help if we could find out the version you have of arm-elf-gcc (use 'arm-elf-gcc -v' in a console). Also, set a breakpoint in 'LEP_ecos_Phytec_LPC229x_ScriptLinker.vi' and capture the command passed to the linker so we can take a look at it. The command is passed into the Sys Exec Wrap VI as a string.

Good instructions for making a GCC cross compiler?
Hi
I think this might be the best place to ask this since people probably have been making cross compilers. I am interested in trying to make a cross compiler of GCC targetting Plan9/i386. There is an old 3.0 version of GCC (http://cm.bell-labs.com/sources/extra/gcc/) ported to Plan9.
The thing that confuses me a bit about cross compilers is the use of binutils for the target architecture. How does that actually work? The host OS/architecture would not be able to execute those binaries. It feels a bit like a chicken-and-egg issure and I am not really sure how to get started. I have been trying to read up a bit on the PKGBUILDs for cross-arm but the whole theoretical issue of how to actually get the thing working in the first place is still a bit unclear to me.
Some good instructions/links/help would be appreciated
I could post my temporary PKGBUILD here if people want to help out with the actual build...A small update to my attempts:
This is my binutils package, it has failed at multiple levels during my attempts. The binutils ported to Plan9 are relatively old so some stuff needs to be patched up to build. Now it fails on not being able to recognize arlex.o . This seems a bit odd I think.

Fortran code for iOS using GCC cross-compiler
Hello everyone!
I have some Fortran application, and i want to compile it for iOS. I'm new in iOS development and as i understand correctly i need to configure GCC (from gcc.gnu.org) with --target=arm-apple-darwin and --enable-languages=c,c++, fortran.
With --target=arm-elf, --target=arm-apple-darwin i got error, that it's not supported.
With --target=arm-none-eabi i got cannot compute suffix of object files: cannot compile Maybe is that because i'm setting wrong configure parameters.
My question is : what is correct ./confgiure parameters to create gcc cross compiler for iOS platform, which supports FORTRAN.
Is this the only (right?) way to build cross-compiler for iOS platform, or i could use existing LLVM-GCC? Thanks!jasonwryan, thanks for the reply,
I've read the ARM Dev Guide as suggested but I don't believe this will do what I'm aiming to achieve. It seems the ARM Dev Guide will install the arm-linux-gnueabi, which allows cross-compiling applications to run on LINUX built for ARM. I need something like arm-none-eabi (or arm-none-gnueabi - the whole naming scheme is a mess at the moment) which is an ARM compiler for "bare metal" ARM devices. I am aiming to program a simple ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller as opposed to an ARM microprocessor running Linux. Hence arm-linux-gnueabi is quite overkill from my understanding and it might even not work.
So, if someone could either confirm that what the ARM Dev Guide suggests is indeed what I need to program a bare metal ARM microcontroller, or recommend an alternative path, it would be very appreciated.
Thanks,

[solved: I am a dope] Can gcc and gcc-multilib coexist?
If I try to install gcc-multilib, it conflicts with my existing 64-bit gcc package. Is there a way for me to install it in another path or install the binaries from gcc-multilib as gcc32, g++32 etc?

I'm learning 32-bit assembly and the tutorial I am using has a small collection of example code and a little library which needs a 32-bit copy of libgcc.a.
libgcc.a is owned by gcc and not gcc-libs and so here I am, attempting to install the multilib package instead of the 64-bit version. The -m32 flag doesn't help. [edit: the -m32 flag to gcc, which tells it to compile for a 32 bit arch]
$ nosr libgcc.a
core/gcc
community/arm-elf-gcc-base
community/arm-wince-cegcc-gcc
community/avr-gcc
community/mingw32-gcc
community/mingw32-gcc-base
multilib/gcc-multilib
I tried to point out that gcc-multilib provides gcc. Everything gcc does, you can do with gcc-multilib. You can't have both installed at the same time (but you wouldn't want/need to, either).

Hi,
I'm trying to crosss-compile a rather large project to arm, more precisly N900.
The project contains boost_program_options and tinyxml, that might meen trouble
in the future but first the basic compiler
Tried the scratchbox on arch but that failed on install maybe, I'llretry.
So i've installed the cross-arm-elf-* packages and (in a perfect world) I would
expect to change the compiler in the makefile from g++ to arm-elf-gcc. But
that didn't do the trick.
arm-elf-gcc: error: makeutil/getdep.cpp: C++ compiler not installed on this system.
arm-elf-gcc -v tells me --enable-languages=c
Is there a c++ compiler for arm? Yes there is.
Installed the arm-none-linux-gnueabi-g++ but that one doesn't know #include <set>
Am I missing something?
So far very happy with arch, don't want to go back to debian just because of that.
greetings

> for a subset of the STL?
Yes, our releases include the STL as part of the C++ runtime library.
So the internal linking must be wrong. I'll have a closer look about that. -
I have compiled a few kernels in an environment in which it's designed to run on - but cross compiling is completely new to me. However - I will persevere because I have wanted to learn this for a while now.
The target system is an arm based board for a NAS. I am using QEMU to install and configure a Debian system but it requires a working kernel in order to boot.
I have installed the arm-elf-gcc-base package (which I assume is the toolchain - am I wrong on this?) but I don't know where to go from there.
How do I invoke this particular toolchain to compile a kernel for the target arch?
Any other pointers or 'gotchas' would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.Which board is it?
Even if you manage to cross compile, kernel will need some extra configuration or patching to boot in qemu.
I have Raspberry Pi and qemu needs custom kernel to boot RPi images, but it's almost useless since there is
no support for network adapter. I have never cross compiled anything for it, but you might want to read on RPi
kernel cross compilation since there is a lot of documentation and you probably need just a different toolchain.
What I'm doing is distributed cross compiling via distcc. That way most of work gets done on my laptop, but it's
still quite slow because makepkg doesn't support distcc pump for distributing pre-processing.
I'm using toolchain provided by Arch Linux ARM project because I run Arch on RPi. If you can find crosstool config for
your board, making toolchain shouldn't be too difficult. This should get you started. -
Do many FPGA/embedded developers use Arch?
I was wondering, since I'm a developer and considering Arch for my workstation, are there many FPGA, embedded etc. designers/developers in the Arch community or at least using Arch for their work?
I don't know, if Arch is as popular among software developers of many kinds (or should I say languages), as i.e. Gentoo is, but looking at the whole distro concept (minimalism, simplicity, configurability etc.) it should draw a lot them.
So.. it would be good to know, that, besides Arch/Linux specific support, help for that kind of development speciallity is also not far awayAnthony Bentley wrote:
In a general Unix sense, the biggest advantage over Windows for embedded development is definitely package management.
At a previous job, I wrote code for some Olimex ARM boards, to help a grad student with his thesis. He had set up a development environment on his home Windows PC, but later could not reproduce the installation on the lab computers: finding a cross‐compiled Windows ARM toolchain, compiling OpenOCD in Cygwin, and then configuring Eclipse to tie it all together.
On my OpenBSD laptop, I did “pkg_add openocd arm-elf-gcc”, wrote a simple Hello World in C, and got the board blinking an LED in no time at all. He was impressed.
So a great and simple way to make your distro more usable for embedded development is to create packages when they don’t exist. It’s pragmatic (because really, nobody wants to remember the right configure flags and recompile GCC again). Arch seems to have packages for quite a few embedded toolchains and/or communication software, which is nice.
I've packaged systemc to arch. I would like to have it on AUR. Thou I dont have the will to write all the flags of the package. I have something which works perfectly to my needs. I would happily hand the code if someone would like to place it properly in AUR. -
Cannot install ARM DS-5 Community Edition
I tried installing ARM DS-5 Community Edition
First attempt was adding http://tools.arm.com/eclipse to Eclipse. I got this error:
com.arm.ds.community.feature.feature.group [5.8.0.20111129_133554] cannot be installed in this environment because its filter is not applicable.
I did some Googling, and apparently CDT was needed, so I installed it via Eclipse, and I got these errors:

I'm using Eclipse 3.7.1, Build id: M20110909-1335
Anybody experienced the same thing? It is recommended that you download and install Eclipse IDE for C/C++ Developers. However, Eclipse Classic and Eclipse IDE for Java Developers can also be used.
Even if your host OS is 64-bit you must use the 32-bit versions of the Eclipse IDE and JRE/JDK 6
http://www.arm.com/products/tools/softw … nstall.php
I guess the culprit is the 64 bit Eclipse I'm using.
$ file /usr/share/eclipse/eclipse
/usr/share/eclipse/eclipse: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.4.0, stripped
So how can I install the 32 bit version?
