Array subset uses twice as much memory

I have been chasing a problem with running out of memory when manipulating large ammounts of acquired data.
My attached vi exhibits some very strange behavior.
My original code used "Array Subset" to clear the data in a shift register.
My revised code just uses an empty constant.
Question #1. Why should it take at least double (perhaps triple) the ammount of memory to store data using the Array subset method.
and.. Why is the memory allocated before the "Array subset" is used.
Question #2. Why am I seeing significant residual memory usage that is not being re-allocated

OK,
The origins of this discovery was unexpected memory "behavior" in an application containing in excess of 1250 vi's and is attached to NI-DAq's, CAN and GPIB based hardware.
We were storing 6 minutes of 50 channels sampled at 5khz and recived an out of memory error.
To stop it failing, we reduced the sample rate to 1khz and gathered some metrics
We did the calculatons on how much memory it should take to store this many samples (360x50x1000x8) = 144 meg
The memory profiler was showing that on first run the memory would rise to an additional 432 meg at the end of sampling and at the point where the shift register was "zeroed" it would drop back to only 144 meg. On the next run it would rise back to 432Meg again.
For intellectual property and simplicity reasons, I wrote a basic VI to demonstrate the problem we found.  I was not expecting it to be critqued for programming methods or whether or not it was a valid application.
The Fundamental problem is that Labview should not allocate 3 times the memory required and not give back a third of it on completion.  Debug or otherwise.
The condensed .vi was first written without the diagram disable, which was added later as a tool to aid peers and NI LV Guru's a way to easily see the problem.
On another note, Why doesn't Labview access virtual memory to store this data instead of using RAM and running out?
We are planning a code extetion to sream the data to TDMS to compensate for this "characteristic".

  • Why does Firefox use up so much memory? My Windows Task Manager shows it using 109 Meg just now asking this question. Thanks

Pretty simple: I want to know how I can keep Firefox from using so much memory when in use. 100-200 meg is common. Thank you

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.
    *[[Export bookmarks to Internet Explorer]]
You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.
    * [[Install an older version of Firefox]]

Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

  • Garageband 11: lagging or unresponsive interface; frequently crashes; and is using way too much memory

Since updating to the newest version of Garageband I've noticed a distinct slow down in interface and functionality; makes editing incredibly difficult having to wait 2-3 seconds after selecting a note or section; sometimes the whole app becomes unresponsive or just crashes altogether. It also completely maxes out memory usage (8GB!) My machine specs are below but I can't imagine why I couldn't run it. It boots up in about 5 seconds and before Mavericks I could run Logic, Garageband, MS Word, Adobe Edge Animate, and Adobe Muse without it breaking a sweat. Now it's running the fans at full blast using way more memory than is necessary.
    My Machine
The OS and Applications run off of a 120GB SSD and instead of an Optical drive I use a data doubler and a second internal (500GB HDD) for backups and extra storage - neither are anywhere near capacity.
Also, I'm not running any other apps, and even tried disabling network connections; no change at all. I do know that Mavericks uses memory differently (don't fully understand the benifit or how it works) but when I open Activity Monitor while running GarageBand it show's my "Memory Used:" at 7.99GB/8GB; but the pressure is still in the green. Could someone please explain to me how the memory usage differs now and why my machine needs to use all of the memory at once to run GarageBand when it is the only app open?
Why is it that 10.9 is substantially more taxing than 10.8 while claiming to be the opposite? What am I missing here?
    Please Help! :-)

    Since updating to the newest version of Garageband I've noticed a distinct slow down in interface and functionality;
Your question is a bit ambigious - the "Newest version" would be GarageBAnd 10.0.1, but the title of your question says GarageBand '11. Are you saying, you upgraded to GarageBand 10.0, but now GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5) is having troubles?
makes editing incredibly difficult having to wait 2-3 seconds after selecting a note or section; sometimes the whole app becomes unresponsive or just crashes altogether.
Perhaps a crash log could help. Or error messages from the Console window. Does the Console.app show any diagnostic messages, when this hanging occurs?
and before Mavericks I could run Logic, Garageband, MS Word, Adobe Edge Animate, and Adobe Muse without it breaking a sweat.
Have all these applications been updated to the latest, Mavericks compatible versions? And all other non-Apple applications?

  • How do I stop Firefox 5.0 being so slow and using far too much memory. I have disabled the plug-in container hoping this would help.

Firefox 5.0 quickly uses 256,000+ of memory and becomes slow enough to use 60% of a twin-code processor and fails to respond for many, many minutes (10 mins +). It is often quicker to kill it ans start again, but this is a pain as I can have up to 4 /5 tabs open.

Try a new Profile and see how it is.

  • IMac using up too much memory?

    Good morning everyone.
I have a mid 2011 iMac and have upgraded the memory to 6GB.  Once i upgraded the RAM the computer felt very snappy as I was able to do more at one.  Last night I noticed the lag especially in the finder that I experienced before the RAM upgrade.  I opened the activity monitor and noticed that on start up my Mac uses around 2.74 GB of Memory Used.   I have been monitoring the memory usage and have noticed that my system uses about 3.33-3.75 GB of memory when I have one Safari window up.  Is this memory usage  normal.  I have no log in items and I and the most that I am doing is using iTunes, Safari, Twitter and Mail at one time.
I am not the most savvy when it comes to the technical part of Macs but I noticed that the kernel_task is running around 423.9MB as I am writing this message.
Can someone please assist in understanding this issue I may or may not have?
    Much appreciated
    Alex

If I leave iTunes running on my iMac, which if I want to watch movies on my apple TV I have to, it takes all of my RAM. It did when I had 8 gigs, and it does now that I have 32. iTunes just loads the RAM to make the application run quick, but when you need the RAM for a project, you need to dump it first. I use Memory Scope from the app store. There is probably a better way.

  • Finder periodically using waaayyyyy too much memory

Since upgrading to 10.5.8 the Finder strikes me as being a bit odd at times. Sometimes it is using a lot of cpu cycles such as 50-80% for no apparent reason that I can find – not copying anything, etc. In trying to sus this out when I notice my machine working harder than I think it should be, I used Activity Monitor to look at the Finder processes. Under stats it showed a huge number of faults, I'm talking here in the 300 million range with Unix calls in the same rough range. Under Memory it showed 16,777,216.00TB under Shared Memory. This then changed to 00 and the same number popped up under Virtual Private, then in both this and Private, then disappeared, only to popup again shortly thereafter.
I've done a couple of restarts, done the permissions, etc. and it isn't always this way. But something seems amiss and I can't replicate it on demand.
Any ideas of help someone can offer?
    Thanks!

    Hi abrody;
You have to help me here for what I should be looking for. In Console under All Messages this was going on during the times I had the problem. Useful?

  • Firefox 4 is slow, it hangs and uses far-too much memory

I've just had to roll-back to Firefox 3.6.16.
For those with a similar problem, here's the link:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Firefox 4 became unusable. Firefox 3.6.16 is using about 110,00k of memory - but Firefox 4 was using, typically 160,000k but anything up to 200,000k causing my machine to hang as it struggled to find the memory.
The weird thing about the memory use was that it just kept on climbing - just a couple of tabs open, nothing special, but you watch the memory usage keep stepping on in about 200k increments.
There appears to be a major memory leak in Firefox 4, and until it is rectified it really is, for me, completely unusable. I had to use explorer to download 3.6.16 it was that bad.

This is a reply I made to someone else who also finds the same problem. We think it is not a memory leak, but FF4 caching page in RAM.
    Reply:
As I long time FF user (1st 20,000 downloaders) I am so disappointed with 4.0.
I find similar problem. 3.6.16 used approx. 6% of 2Gb RAM, 4 has been reported at 25%. Not caused by extensions as installed over 3.6 with no change in same few exts. Many other problems (e.g. 4 fails to remember allowed redirects & many undesired changes) so resorted to backup of 3.6. Not a definitive answer, but one sure to work is to install a totally portable version of 3.6.16 (or even 4 if you wish to play around with it), there are many portable versions available which do not mess with anything else on your machine, just Google Firefox Portable. I almost exclusively use Portable progs. for everything nowadays and if issue crops up it is as simple as deleting the folder it was installed in. Also it can be copied to a Flash Drive complete with all exts. & settings and used on any win os PC. This is a good recommendation. Hope this helps.

  • Ipod Nano using up too much memory

I plugged my friend's "Brand new" Nano into my Mac and it says that it is currently using 588 MB. The problem is there are no songs or pictures on it! So I guess my question is what could possibly be occupying the 588 MB? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No idea - but did you try to run the current iPod updater to restore it to factory conditions?

  • I keep getting a pop up saying Firefox is using far too much memory

If I try to download a video or film something that would have taken 30 minutes is now taking 10-12 hours.
My download speed is showing 4.79 MB/sec but it´s certainly not doing that.

This issue can be caused by the presence of leftover files in the Firefox program folder (defaults\pref) like a file firefox.js that overrides the update URL with a wrong link.
See my post here and do a clean reinstall and be sure to remove the Firefox program folder.
    * [/questions/826858]
    Do a clean (re-)install:
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Firefox using too much memory after an update

Since I updated to firefox 14, it started using WAY too much memory, which is 2GB+. This has never happened to me, and none of the solutions on the website have helped me. It starts off normally at about 80 MBs and then starts growing and growing. I have to restart firefox about twice an hour or more.

I also recently downgraded my flash player to a recommended version on this website since the latest version crashes too much, that was about the time when I updated firefox, not sure if that might be why this is happening
EDIT: Updated to latest version of flash again. Memory usage is still high

  • Help me please, I need to know why imovie videos use so much memory

There have been a lot of firsts for me this year. First time owning a laptop, first time owning a mac, and first time uploading videos to youtube. I got my macbook in april and it's my pride and joy. However, I'm having a huge problem with it.
I don't understand why the videos I make on imovie use up so much memory!! Now that I have an hd video camera it's even worse. First of all, I can't import my videos because there isn't enough space. Second of all, the videos I did manage to import were about 30-40 minutes total and are using up about 22GB! I thought my events, (which usually range from 20-50 minutes) were bad enough as they can be 1-2GB
    Here is my question:
Why do the videos take up so much space and can I change that?
any information would be very appreciated, I've spent hours scouring the web looking for answers and could not find anything. Thanks again!

    sofia castello-branco wrote:

They contain lots of data. You can reduce the resolution, frame rate, or length on movies to reduce their final size, but that won't help you much at import or while you are working with them.

My I-Phone 4 is using too much memory.  It shows Apps at 1.44 and Data & Documents at 1.68, not to mention "other" using up more memory.  I have tried eliminating apps but nothing changes.  How does one get rid of some of this "stuff" that is using up so much memory??

  • FPGA code using too much memory? getting error 52000

    Hi all,
I'm having trouble getting some FPGA code to run. What I am trying to do with the program is acquire data using DAQmx from two fgen's, and then use an FPGA based lock-in amplifier to find the frequency of these signals and their phase difference (It's actually only a slight modification of a lock-in amplifier available on the NI site). I keep getting error 52000 when I start up the program, indicating I'm using up too much memory somewhere. I don't know why this is, as even the lowest sampling rates I give to the DAQ do not keep this problem from happening. Could someone look at my code to see whats going on?
    Thanks,

  • Filtering and calculating averages of array subsets

I've got a 2-D array coming out of a loop and I need to calculate average for subsets corresponding to iterations 0-9, 10-19, etc..  Additionally, I need to filter out values above and below acceptable limits before calculating average.  Any suggestions for how to approach this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

My suggestion is to slog through each array subset, use a for loop to add up the values you want, keep track of the number of values, then divide out for the average.
Every tenth reading you could clear the sum and counts.
The results would be saved in an array that only adds a value every tenth loop.
You could keep track of the one to ten value separately from the number of values accepted ( a.k.a. Filtering).
So my slog suggestion would be a for loop, two counters ( # accepted values and one to ten count), an array to store the averages and a numeric to hold the sum.
The filter criteria would produce a Boolean that would toggle adding to the sum and adding to the # accepted values.
The Sum and the counters need to be shift registers, and as I mentioned, there would be some logic to clear these shift registers every time the 'one to ten' count got to ten

    * https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html
Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.
