As a Logic Pro X user, is using the Onyx utility advisable?
Hello, I am about to erase and reinstall my Mac Pro's boot drive, and will also erase and restore files to one of my two internal hard drives (the one where I keep my Logic Projects and some other files). My other internal HD contains samples, and the structure of it has not changed that much, so I don't plan to erase it.
After this process, I want to maintain the hard drives well after reformatting/reinstalling/restoring files, and I'm wondering if using a utility such as Onyx is a good idea for the boot drive, or unnecessary. I'm also wondering if any kind of regular defragging on the Logic Project drive is a good idea. Any thoughts?
Thanks.
P.S. Just to give a bit more background: I've owned this computer for 4+ years and have never erased it since buying. I've been experiencing a bit of bugginess with Logic (e.g., several "Deep Architecture - please unpack some folders" error messages, even though I don't use folders in my projects, or Midi Timeout errors, when I only have one MIDI driver installed (for an Access Virus TI). So for these and other reasons, I feel it might be a good idea to do the erase/reinstall. Regarding the internal hard drive with Logic Projects, my thinking is that, by erasing and dragging the folders/files back, I can effectively defrag the drive.
Hi Tim,
When I restore my Logic Projects, would it be better to restore each project to the root of the drive, rather than to "Productions" folders at the root of the drive? Or would doing this mess up Logic's internal directory? I
I would restore it exactly as it was on the older drive.. with folders etc, intact.. It shouldn't make any difference if you change the structure but, having said that, I've had weird issues when taking projects folders and moving them into sub folders folders (or out of folders) for reasons I do not fully understand and the real confusion comes from why it only sometimes happens and not always or never...
Therefore, I adopt the practice of.. "Lets not risk anything messing anything up" and just keep the structure exactly the same...
I recently began saving all the content to the project folder, whereas with some older projects I didn't save the sampler instruments/samples to the Project folder (but I always saved the audio files/midi files etc. to the Project folders).
I did much the same thing originally but then I had the opportunity (and time) to go back through all my old projects and re-save them with "everything included" and I am glad i did.... although in all honesty I didn't fully test all my older projects prior to moving them and re-saving them but again, that "healthy paranoia" of mine got the better of me and so I just re-saved every project "Just in case.." as i had one project that for some unexplained reason wouldn't load all the project's custom IR's used by Space Designer.. (even though they remained were they had always been located prior to the moving of the projects and so in theory, that shouldn't have caused any issues) and so that put me on guard so to speak.
I had been saving my Logic Project folders not to the root of my 2nd internal hard drive, but to folders titled "Productions A-F", "Productions G-L", "Productions M-R" and "Productions S-Z". All those folders were at the root of the drive.
I do a similar thing.. sorting out individual projects into grouping folders named in relation the the major overall project they are a part of. Example Grouping Folders named Movie XYZ, Album 123, TV Show ABC and so on... and projects sorted out and saved to those Grouping folders.. I personally find it a much cleaner way of keeping everything neat and tidy and have noticed no issues in doing so.
Cheers..
Nigel

Logic Pro quit unexpectedly while using the Altiverb 7 plugin.
Ever since I upgraded to the Altiverb 7, I'm getting this message: "Logic Pro quit unexpectedly while using the Altiverb 7 plugin".
Sometime I have to restart the Logic twice or more times. Even when Logic finally opens it takes about 30-45 seconds before it becomes functional - as it's loading the AUs. I have never experienced this with the Altiverb 6.
And yes... I asked the Altiverb people as well.
Thanks.
J.Are you using 10.7.5 as your info line states?
If so, see if you need this supplemental update.

Logic Pro quit unexpectedly while using the Logic Pro plug-in
I cannot open Logic at all now. It crashes stright away with the above error heading...!
Can anyone help with this?
Thank you
SimonIt's quite a long report but it looks like the important/relevant bits are at the top although it doesn't cast suspicions over any plug-in as far as I can see:

Logic Pro X Crashing while using Komplete Ultimate 9 Battery 4 Plugin
Hi Everyone!
I am encountering consistent crashes with Logic Pro X and Native Instruments Komplete Ultimate 9 Battery 4 Plugin. If I create about 4 tracks with a bunch of midi notes I.E. numerous kicks, numerous snares, numerous claps and numerous hi hats Logic Pro X will consistently quit when I go to Save As and then click save. I get the circle and then bam! Logic Pro states that “Logic Pro Quit Unexpectedly while using the Battery 4 Plugin.” I have inserted the crash image too. This only happens with the Battery 4 Plugin and does not occur with any of the other plugins in Komplete 9 Ultimate or any of Logic's Plugins. I have tried to Save As and Save Copy As with the outcome being the same crash. The fact that the crash occurs when I am going to Save As tells me that something is most likely occurring with Logic Pro X and not Battery...right? I really like Battery 4--to the point that I don't want to go back unless I must--and the drum sounds in Battery 4 are perfect for my electronic music that I produce. Any help is appreciated in advance. I have repaired my disk, updated Komplete with the latest updates and contacted Komplete which still has not responded (one week later) Here are my computer specs:
Imac 27” Mid 2011
1 TB internal HD with 800 GB free space
16gb ram
3.4 GHz
I7 Processor
Presonus Firestudio Interface
OS X 10.8.5
Logic Pro 10.0.6
Lacie 7200 RPM 500GB USB external HD for my Komplete 9 Ultimate Sample Library with 200 GB free space
Minipro SSD 250 GB Hard Drive for sessionThanks for posting DeeJayKeyz, it helps to know you are experiencing the same issue...although I wish none of us were. I have done the following to troubleshoot the Battery 4 crash issue in hopes of finding a solutions yet it still comes up:
Repaired Disk Permissions
Reinstalled Battery 4 app and library
Initialized Preferences in Logic X except for key commands
Trashed the com.apple.audiounitlugins
Trashed Logic's preferences via the Library
Set up a new administrator account in preferences>user and tried again…
With all the above troubleshooting, the issue eventually comes back. The most success I had was when creating a new user. BUT, I still experienced crashing on Logic Pro 9 every time and the crash would occur with the first save with Logic Pro X when using the Battery 4 Plugin on the new user account. Again, for the sake of repetition, Logic Pro 9 consistently crashed when "save[ing] As" and Logic Pro X would crash the first time I went to Save As, but would “save as” with no issues after the first crash when creating a new admistrator user. In both cases I had 16 tracks of Battery going, but it doesn't take more than 4 to re-create the crash. On a side note, if I change the tracks to Massive or Absyth I don't get crashes...just battery 4 for me so far. I have not tried it with Kontact as I have been spending too much time figuring out the Battery Logic issue. Bummed to know that I may experience this issue dow the road with Kontact :/ sure with Native Instruments and Logic would get their heads together to figure this out. I contacted Apple and dealt with Garry in support. He was helpful and came up with creating a new user. He did tell me to call back if I had any other crashes and this would be taken to a higher administration lever. But when I called back low and behold, I dealt with someone else who just blamed battery 4. I have to say though…using the "save as" feature and crashing while using a plugin appears to be a Logic problem…although I don't doubt there is a communication issue btw the two programs. -
Logic froze while I was working on something so I forced quit. Now every time I open LOGIC a message pops up that says:
"Error reading/writing file
“com.apple.logic.pro.cs”:
Logical end-of-file reached during read operation."
The only button option is cancel so I press it and another message appears that says:
"The Preferences are not loaded completely.
Do not save them, as you would overwrite the Preferences file with incomplete data."
Then when i close logic a box appears saying:
"The Preferences are not loaded completely.
Save them to "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" anyway?"
There are 3 button options to press; ok, cancel or dont save.
I press "don’t save" cuz I don't want to ruin anything.
I found a discussion located here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/9564253#9564253 that says if I delete the file "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" it will resolve the problem. If I do this will I loose or mess anything up at all, automation, saved channel strips customizations, saved effects, synth, or ultrabeat customizations etc? Or especially will I loose any work I've done? I have hundreds pieces of music files I've created. I'm scared to mess anything up with all the hours and months of work I've done. Is there anyway to fix this without loosing anything? I'm using Logic Pro 8.
Thank youYou can safely delete this file - its the preference file for control surface settings - you haven't said whether you're actually using a control surface or not, if so, you will have to set it up again. A new file will be created when you fire Logic up again, but of course it will contain default settings. If you have a complicated control surface setup, remember to keep a backup copy somewhere in case any future problems arise.
Other than that, you really have nothing to be scared about - hopefully your problem is as simple as that and there isn't an underlying problem (a corrupt hard drive, for example). You seem concerned about losing work, so I guess you want to think about backing that up on a regular basis too. If you're saving your projects to your system drive, do get an external one for this. And also check that you have plent of free space on your system drive - you need to keep about a quarter or third of it free for your OS and programs to run properly (some temporarily stored files can be quite large). -
Logic Pro quit unexpectedly while using AutoTuneAU_MM plugin
Hello,
I recently upgraded to OS 10.7 (for music reasons I've kept the OS in this range) and now when I'm working in Logic Pro 9.1.8 and I close a project or go to open a new project, I get:
Logic Pro quit unexpectedly while using AutoTuneAU_MM plugin
Process: Logic Pro [712]
Path: /Applications/Logic Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/Logic Pro
Identifier: com.apple.logic.pro

PlugIn Version: 5.1.0 (5.1.0)
I am using AutoTune 5 (because that's the only AutoTune I've found that has zero latency when recording). The AU Manager has validated all of my plugins including AutoTune 5. Not understanding why this keeps happening. Anybody experience this? Thanks in advance.

Mac OS 10.7.5

Logic Pro 9.1.8Yes, the plugin crashes – it is probably not compatible with later OS X versions. You might need a newer version than Auto-Tune 5, they are currently at version 7.

Downloading Logic Pro x user manual
I can't download the Logic Pro x user manual onto my ipad as Safari crashes half way through the download- is it just me or is there something up with the link? I have the smaller two manuals but can't get the main one.
Yes you can. (Sorry. The other post with the answer popped up as soon as I posted.
Thx -
I am looking for a way to automate index creation using Adobe Reader Pro without having to use the screen user interface, as the indexing has to be run by a batch process.

Final cut pro quit unexpectedly while using the CUDA plug-in?
Hello,
FCP 7 quits on Quicktime conversion export every single time.
Just to give some information as to how this issue started, we recently had to send our Mac early 2009 OSX 10.8.5 to get repaired because of permissions issues with the start-up drive. We had been running 10.8.5 and Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 for a while without any major issues. We also have a 3rd party graphics card installed, the Sapphire HD 7950 for mac which has been running for about six months and still seems to operate correctly. As part of the repair the Apple certified shop re-installed our OSX.
After they re-installed our OS, I ran Final Cut Pro 7 and realized that I was unable to export using Quicktime Conversion. Every time I try to export using Quicktime Conversion, Final Cut Pro instantly crashes saying "Final Cut Pro Quit Unexpectedly while using the CUDA plug-in". I asked Sapphire/AMD Radeon support what the problem was and they said this is a Final cut pro problem and not related to their card. Their response was "CUDA isn't supported by AMD hardware in MacOSX. My best guess is that either an option was turned on in Final Cut Pro to use CUDA, or the program is doing some sort of detection (possibly on installed NVIDIA Drivers). Without the NVIDIA hardware, the drivers would be running and hence the active but unsupported CUDA would fail."
Below is the log from the error that happens when I try to export using quicktime conversion. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I was exporting a QT Movie and bringing into compressor but there was a further problem of Compressor greying out the "submit" button, so that option wasn't available when I posted.
Your solution led me in the right direction to fix my problem. The Digital Rebellion application is very good and when I ran the crash analyzer, it still said the CUDA plugin was the culprit. But when I tried looking at the available plugins, it didn't show up. I ran a search for the plugin and found that there was a folder under Library>Frameworks>CUDA.framework. I copied that folder into a folder I made on the desktop (because I didn't want to delete something that the computer needed to run) and then deleted it from the Framework folder. I knew that our third party graphics card we installed didn't support CUDA, so I thought I'd be okay risking this; I could also replace that folder from the desktop if something major happened. I restarted and then tried exporting using QT Conversion. It worked!
Next problem then was Compressor. I needed to find out why compressor's submit button was greyed out. The application seemed to work fine, the version of compressor and Q master were the same, 3.5.3, but it didn't allow me to submit anything. I ran compressor repair from the Digital Rebellion application and it didn't change things. I read up a while on why this was happening and found on a support community that had similar issues. Many people on it said this update for Pro Applications fixed their problems:
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl949
So I think, now my computer is running the same way as it was before (except for Sorenson Squeeze which I need to fix). Thanks for the help! -
I could really use some insight into this please also how many gigs of RAM should my power mac have it only has two right now and logic tends to glitch up majorly.
My original question :
I purchased a powermac pro and it came with logic Pro 9 (but with out the additional suite of programs that comes with). How can I reregister or reinstall Logic Pro 9 to get those features? -

Does Logic Pro X actually work with the Roland VS-20?
Hi all. According to the support docs, the Roland VS-20 should work with Logic Pro X. I've installed the latest drivers, the latest Logic plug-in for the VS-20, and the latest VS-20 Editor. On occasion (and I have no idea what the magic formula is), I've gotten the controls and audio to work via the VS-20. However, more often than not, the VS-20 controls (transport controls and faders) do nothing, and playing audio results in a horrible screeching through the VS-20.
A couple of other points of info:
The VS-20 always shows up correctly in the Control Surface and audio settings of Logic Pro X.
The VS-20 works fine in Reaper 4 as well as when only using the VS-20 Editor.
I'm using Logic Pro X (10.0.3) on a 2012 MBPr w/ 2.6GHz i7 and 16GB RAM
Is anyone out there using this setup successfully?
Thanks!Roland was very helpful, even though their solution didn't actually work for me. I sent them the same info as above, and here was the reply:
We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble. The VS-20 is definitely compatible with Logic Pro X. Be sure that you have setup the VS-20 in Logic Pro X according to the following instructions:
Audio I/O Setup:
1. Select Logic Pro X in the menu bar and navigate to Preferences.
2. Click on “Audio...”
3. Under the Devices tab, set your Output Device and Input Device to “VS-20 44.1kHz”--if it is not already set.
Note: The sample rate of your Logic Pro X project must be 44.1kHz--as the VS-20 only operates in this sample rate.
4. Click “Apply Changes”.
5. Close the Preferences menu.
Control Surface Setup:
1. Select Logic Pro in the menu bar and navigate to Preferences.
2. Navigate to Control Surfaces and then click on “Setup...” A Setup window will appear.
3. Click on “New” and then select “Install…” An Install window will appear.
4. Select “Mackie Designs (Manufacturer) / Mackie Control (Model) / Logic Control (Module) and then click “Add”.
Note: If prompted with the message “No new Devices found”, click on “Add Manually”.
5. In the Setup window, expand the Mackie Control section and assign both the Out Port and Input Port to “CONTROL”.
Note: If the Setup window does not appear, right-click on the Mackie mixer image and then select “Hide/Show Inspector”.
6. Close the Control Surface Install and Setup windows.
The VS-20 is now setup for Logic Pro X.
We hope this information is helpful! Please let us know if this does not resolve your issue and include as much information as possible regarding troubleshooting you have done and results you have received. We are happy to help you.
Sincerely,
Roland Product Support
These steps actually resulted in a situation where some of the buttons on the VS-20 triggered sounds instead of their intended functions. I deleted everything and started over, this time picking the actual VS-20 option in the setup, and everything worked.
I should mention that I also (foolishly?) updated to Mavericks just before getting this to work. -
Logic Pro 7 And NODES - Do the versions of OS X have to match?
Hello,
I tried installing, off the logic pro 7.2 installation disk, the Node on my 10.3.9 ibook. My main computer has 10.4.5.
My question, can I run logic as a node on my ibook without upgrading to 10.4?
Thanks,
Jeff
PS I still have my logic 7.0 install disk.Hi, I forgot to mention that the node from the 7.2 disk was unable to be installed due to me not having Tiger.
Is there a way to use a 10.3.9 computer as a node for a Tiger & Logic Pro 7.2 computer? -

JalionI am not sure, but I can warn you not to buy the Rosewill enclosure with the Oxford 922 Chip...
http://www.rosewill.com/product/product.aspx?productId=81
That is what I have with a Seagate 160GB, 8MB Cache, 7200RPM, Ultra-IDE hard drive. It's fast, but it has A.D.D. It will fall asleep, even after playing with the hard drive sleep times... Also, it has a slow response time in Logic... I click record, and it takes 3-5 seconds for it to start recording. I get the spinning beach ball of death for that 3-5 seconds... shrugs
My friend bought this drive...
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/400+USB2/
And it works perfectly on my computer. No crappy A.D.D... Hope that helps.

*Note a few of my best friends have A.D.D. and I hope no one takes offense to that reference... it just seemed VERY fitting in my situation. -
I have the G Drive 1 TB (GEN4 1TB) external drive purchased in 2010. I need to connect to my new MacBook Pro. I'm using the external drive for media storage of my video editing projects. Will a 800fw to thunderbolt adapter cable work? I understand that using a USB port connection is not fast enough for video editing. I read somewhere the G Drives don't connect well to MacBook Pro.
thanks
larryI doubt this can be relocated or moved so you might want to just repost in the macbook pro area.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:
