CiscoWorks: How to change casuser name to something else?

Hi,
Due to our company policy, GPO applied on server, casuser is not allowed as a local administrator... Active Directory team says that if we change "casuser" name to any other name as per company policy, then they will be able to make it permanently local administrator.
Are we able to change "casuser" name to anything else...
Also can we use any other service than TASK SCHEDULER, as its also not allowed in GPO. Currently we are unable to make scheduled backups as TASK SCHEDULER is disabled.

to keep things clear, casuser does not need to be a member of the local administrator group it is a member of its own group, named "casusers"; It is just necessary to install LMS as a local administrator so that all necessary settings can be made during installation! But be aware that GPOs can overwrite the necessary rights for casuser (or casusers) and can be responsible for "sudden" problems a week or a month after a successfull and running installation.
casuser can not be renamed.
most of the scheduled jobs are maintened LMS internally and do not need "Task Scheduler" or "at"; the only periodic jobs I know of are logrotsch.bat and backupsch.bat to maintain logfile rotation and the database backup respectively. I would just try to set up these jobs in an alternative scheduler (btw. which one are you using ??). The only consequence I can imaging is that LMS can not report on the status of these jobs...
Both .bat files are only wrappers around the .pl skripts doing the real job.
You should get the permission to enable the task scheduler for a test, setup both jobs in the GUI like you need. When you have done this, open a DOS box, just type "at" and copy the command you see and use it for your own scheduler Then unconfigure the settings in the GUI
Another possibility that comes into my mind is to tweak windows, so that the "at" command points to your own scheduler. You should play with doing this before or after setting up the Job in the GUI (I would start with "after")
But be aware that this is not supported and Cisco TAC can reject any help befor you have reverted these settings.

How to install an older instrument driver (GPIB) LV2009 eval, 23 days remaining!

Still having fun (I think) here trying to "evaluate" LV2009.
I'm sort of happy with the higher level stuff, front pannels, block diagrams, flow control with error signaling etc, so now time to move on and try to talk with the real world.   The Front Panel development UI is a bit of a dog, but I'll live with that.
Anyway...
I have a Marconi 6960 RF power meter (and similar kit) I can use for this "evaluation" and have found a so called driver in the NI developer zone some(i forget)where. It's a zipfile (no problem) with 4 files in. .c .h .fp and .doc    Sadly, the .doc though documents the functions of the driver, gives me no clue as to how to install it in LV2009. It also talks about LabWINDOWS V2.0, and dates from 1997.
(As an asside, most of what I will have to do, will relate to "older" or "Legacy" GPIB or RS232 connected instrumentation, and maybe one or two USB toys. There is no choice, LV is expensive enough if we go this route. But it's not even peanuts compared to the value of some of the instrumentation it will need to work with.)
Looking arround this board, I'm not realy any the wiser as to what to do with it. (This downloaded "driver" code.) It obviously needs compiling, but with what, and then integrating in LV2009, but how?
I found a link in one sort of related message, something about a driver import wizard, but the link is blocked by some spotty IT type this end, so that is of no help.
The inbuilt help from within LV2009 is sufficiently vague, or over complicated as to be of little use too.
What I need, is a simple, put that there, do this, do that type of procedure.
Again, stumped by simple details, and this is the area I will probably be spending most of my LV life in, from what's being muttered about "upstairs" in the big boss's office earlier.
Any help appreciated.

Yes, I found that page (and many others) but the info there is sufficiently vague, or so OTT for someone who does not know their way arround the darker recesses of LV (yet) to figure out.   It tells me a lot, but it does not tell me in sufficient detail *exactly* how to install a driver that someone else has created, or for that matter, how to find out what "Drivers" are installed already.
As you or someone pointed out, that code was also written way back for another system "LabWINDOWS/CVI" (whatever that was) but it shows up when you search for "Drivers for LabVIEW". It is also listed as supported by LV7.0 and LV8.0.   Those IDN pages also do not yet (that I can see) make any mention of LV2009. Is it just me that sees this as somewhat inconsitant and confusing for a new user, when NI are pushing LV2009 at this time?
Someone is now going to tell me that reusing existing older drivers *is* straightforward, but will be vague as to exactly how.
The only "exposure" to LV we've had here in the past/present, is as users of pre-compiled tools and utilities from some of our principles. And it has to be said, all of them are without exception, extreemly buggy, so much so, I personally wouldnt say they were fit for even internal Beta testing, as they don't handle "unexpected events" at all well. And some of these utilities could if they screw up, seriously damage hardware in some instances.
We've also found many many times, that anything using "VISA" IO drivers (that word again) is almost garanteed to be troublesome to get or keep working, especialy as one lab/workshop PC might have tools and programs from several vendors on it, and they must all work indipendantly when needed (not at the same time!) without interference from other vendors code or preferences. For some reason, VISA seems to make that all but imposible.
We have a situation at the moment, where we suspect a "Clash of the VISA's" as we can't reproduce what a customer has reported in the way of bad behaviour of a semi automated test system, but we see other errors relating to the serial IO used, throwing up internal LV runtime error messages, and blank spaces where the *Real meaningfull* comments should be. It's all pre-compiled code, so we have no way of supporting or debugging it, but try tell the end user that, who's test facility is now at a standstill, untill I can call the East coast USA later today (from the UK) not that I expect a constructive reply till sometime tomorrow, at best. By then, there'll be Director to Director phone call's going on!
I've also just been informed, that the workshop PC in question, will not now run something else we need, since we earlier installed the program the user is using (made by the instrument vendor) and all it's baggage, so yet another "Fixit" re-install of VISA (this time from Agilent) is needed to complete another job, and that in turn will break something else. It's a nightmare!
Sorry, but in my book, VISA is a no go for "Serious" multi vendor use. It's too fragile. In our industry (EMC and product safety testing) "Legacy" GPIB rules, almost without oposition. USB and LAN connections may be alternatives where the instrument supports them. With some true RS232 point to point low speed dedicated links where needed (often via passively powered fibre optic convertors too) for some measuring instruments.
But, at this time, all I want to do, is talk/control a simple existing GPIB instrument (a MI 6960, that I know all too well) and I thought (wrongly as it turns out) that I had found a needed "Driver".   If I have to create one from new, I will, one way or another.   But it makes a mockery of the so often quoted aspect of LabVIEW, being quick to construct and deploy a test/trial/control system etc, with an existing vast library of tried and tested instrument/device drivers. From what I see so far, it's anything but, as it's in the same ball park as all the other RAD IDE's etc (Even Delphi!) in that respect. The devil is in the detail, and if that detail as often does not exist, it's a task and a half to create it, and get it right.
Sorry if I ruffle any feathers, but I've been arround RF test & instrumentation systems at the hardware and software level for more years (decades) than I care to admit. Each and every time someone comes up with a "better" way to do something (usualy involving even more computing power!) It's anything but quick and easy, and the end result is in all honesty, not realy different to how it was done, before "enforced newness" was applied.
Regards to All, I've still got the day job to do, so sadly I can't sit in front of this and mess with software all day. Much as I need to, and often would preffer to!

How can I change the BlackBerry Link Network Drive mapping from Z: to something else?

I generally have a mapping to my NFS server on Z:, and my iTunes library has a relative path to Z: for all of my music - the fact that Link is automatically picking Z: as my network sync target for my device does not work for me to sync music, or anything really. I can't figure out how to change this value to something else.
I found the registry key: \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\Device Manager\Device Settings\<DEVICENAME>\VolumeMapping with a default blank REG_SZ - can I use this key at all to manually change drive mappings for my device? If so, what is the key/value pair I need and will this mess up any assumptions taken inside the Link software for synching?

Also, I have a Feature Enhancement Request to go along with this issue: Add a "Change drive map letter" button beside the "Turn on wireless connections to my computer" button in Link, and add the same option in the context menu to the 'Device Manager' for the mapping (which currently just says 'Explore').

I do not know a lot about this subject but since Device Manager is not a Device and the BlackBerry Phone is not recognized as a Device in Disk management unless Mass Storage is turned ON it looks as if by design you cannot change the Drive Letter.
Also if Mass Storage is turned On in the Phone Settings File Manager and BB link will not work but the BB Phone will then be recognized as a Device in Disk Management and the Drive Letter can be changed, this has no effect on the Drive Letters for Device Manager.
Normally to change the Drive Letter and Paths of a Device once the Device is plugged you would go to Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, right click the Device and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths"
Changing the Registry or Uninstalling Device Manager but keeping BB Link or looking for a Utility that can change the Drive Letter such as the one that many XP users had called TweakUI (only worked in XP) or changing the Drive Letter for your Network may be the only way.

About all you can do is wait until it finishes or you get an error message.

How I Can Specify JDeveloper Location to Install BI Beans?

Hi Gurus, as others I am also new in OTN, I downloaded JDeveloper 10.1.3.10 and BI Beans and installing "Custom Option".
I unzipped JDeveloper files on C:\Oracle\JDevStudio\
During installation BI Beans on "Specify JDeveloper Location to Install BI Beans" page giving above path raise an error message "The JDeveloper was found is at your specified location is an unknown version. Please specify a full path to a supported version (10.1.2 or higher) of JDeveloper". Whereas I am using JDevelper (10.1.3.10). How I can solve this problem?

You cannot install it on windows XP. You need to have a server version of windows (2000, 2003). Or, also on linux, but for that you'll need another installation.

Adobe Bridge in Photoshop - How to install Bridge and camera raw? And what is it all about?

Hi everyone! I am actually in love with this adobe photoshop. I used PSCS2 before, but later on upgraded to CS4. But I feel tired in upgrading to CS5.
One time, I found a tutorial in youtube about camera raw, and would really want to use it. But I was wondering how to install the camera raw. I believe camera raw is a plugin? so I downloaded the plugin here, installed it in my PS. I downloaded a file Camera Raw.8bi and paste it on my C drive - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS4\Plug-ins\File Formats.
I now am very confused, how will I open it? I do not have adobe bridge! After I installed the camera raw, I opened my PS. I clicked the file>then browse in bridge. I had an error, it's "error 2 photoshop11 undefined". Which is what I thought, I might have done something wrong with installing it.
My question is, do you still need adobe bridge installed in order to use camera raw?
If yes, how does it work? How am I suppose to open camera raw?
If no, how am I going to open camera raw without bridge?
And also, where will I download adobe bridge? I cannot find one here for CS4, only adobe bridge for CS5. I am wondering, is it okay to install adobe bridge CS5 and use it with my PS CS4?

WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is a set of extensions to HTTP/1.1.
The main difference from FTP as far as I can see is that it allows you to edit documents on a remote web server.
WebDAV was used by the Apple server - MobileMe but is not generally supported by hosting services.
Using WebDAV you can mount a directory locally. This was how iDisk worked on your Mac and you could drag files onto it to upload them to the remote directory.
With WebDAV, a number of users can share a directory which is why its used in local networks but presents security problems when using a remote server.
If you are into file sharing rather than publishing, Dropbox or its new rival SugarSync are more appropriate.

How to install Windows 8 on Mid 09 Macbook Pro (10.8.3)

So i loved the new Windows 8, and even had it installed before bootcamp supported windows 8 on my new iMac, i waited to buy a bigger hard drive and more ram for my mid 09 Macbook Pro. The day i bought the new hardware, Apple released 10.8.3, and an updated bootcamp to support Windows 8! Yay! I got my install disc out (iso file burned to DVD), opened up bootcamp assistant, only to get an error saying apple dropped support for my mid 09 Macbook Pro and Windows 8. Making the install impossible through bootcamp. Do not fret, i have the solution, and EVERYTHING works perfectly. Here we go.
Gather your Windows 8 install disc AND a Windows 7 install disc (you can surely find one by searching the net, use your old one, or borrow a colleagues... we are licensing Windows 8, NOT 7, this is just for my trick to fool bootcamp assistant and no i do not condone piracy)
Inside BootCamp Assistant, the driver download may hang,it did for me, twice..could be heavy usage due to the popular new update...so i recommend downloading it faster, and manually here http://support.apple.com/downloads/#macoscomponents and get 4.1.4586 yes this is for windows 7, ALSO while you are there, download the windows 8 support pack 5.0.5033, as we will need that later as well. As a matter of fact, DO IT THIS WAY and dont bother
That being said and done, in BootCamp Assistant (OSX), only check off Install Windows 7, leaving the download support software unchecked
Partition your hard drive as youd like, this splits up your storage space however you like, keep in mind which OS you plan to run the most, and obviously give that one more room, i.e you do all your Photoshop work, and app development in OSX, and only use Windows for office stuff, you'd want to give yourself more room on the OSX side. I however bought a huge new internal drive to split them basically in half, as i use them both frequently.
This step is where the trick comes. OSX 10.8.3 / BootCamp will advise you there is no support for Windows 8..only 7 with your Mid 09 Macbook Pro if you have put your Windows 8 disc in, upsetting you as it did me...possibly bringing you to this post, thats not FAIR is it? Your 09 MacBook Pro is still JUST AS GOOD as a lot of PC's running Windows 8, why they excluded this model i have no idea...im sure they had reasons, but i dont care at the moment..lol
INSTEAD place a Windows 7 install disc in, and click next. BootCamp Assistant will now partition your drive, make the windows side bootable and restart your MBP.
Let it do its thing, and eventually you will land at the Windows 7 installation interface. We don't really want that, we want Windows 8 right?
Click the "x" to close the installation for Windows 7, it threatens your MBP will restart, and allow it to do so.
**IMPORTANT** Once you hear the beloved Mac chime, quickly press and hold the "option" key.
This brings you to an area where you can select a startup disk. At this point, lets get rid of the trick. Hit your eject button and get rid of the Windows 7 install disc, we are done with it now.
You now, well in my case anyway, should only see your Mac HD, and the Recovery Disk.
Insert your Windows 8 install disc
Now WAIT. Eventually, you should see a new DVD looking icon that says Windows pop up next to the MacHD and Recovery Disk. (depending on what you called your iso, it may something else...not sure, but you cant miss the new entry)
This is where a wired mouse will be needed, or use tab/space/enter to navigate to the new Windows Disc icon and launch it.
You are now in Windows 8's installation interface, cool!
Follow the steps until it asks you where you want to install it. You should see a partition about equal to what you set earlier in BootCamp Assistant, and it SHOULD say Bootcamp right on it. Select this partition. (mine was the last one, the fourth i believe)
OH NO, it says you cant install it to that partition, this is normal. You need to highlight/select this partition, and click format. I cant remember, but i think you have to click "options" to get to a the spot where you can format it. Pretty straight forward. Safety check, obviously make sure you have the Bootcamp partition selected, dont format your Mac OSX partition!
After the quick format is done, Windows 8 installer will then allow you to click "next" and from there the magic happens.
Go through the whole Windows 8 install, and setup how you would like, this takes awhile, and im not covering that, as its a hand in hand walkthrough like any other install.
Once your inside your new Windows 8, you'll see a bunch of things not working, like tap to click on your trackpad, no on screen displays for brigtness, volume, and possibly other stuff. Not cool right?
Grab your USB stick, or Burnt disc that you applied the bootcamp support downloads to in the begining of this tutorial.
FIRST open the Windows 7 Bootcamp install, 4.1.4586, open the folder and find setup.exe and run it (we are in windows 8 now)
It takes a while, but Apple's BootCamp will install a bunch of drivers, etc, and eventually restart your MBP, which is cool, let it do it.
Upon finishing, lets go back to the USB/Burnt Disc where all your support software was saved, and lets get the newly support BootCamp 5.0.5033 opened up.
Big Thanks to a post by ErikVanD i seen on this forum for the next step.
If you want, try and click setup in this latest BootCamp support set, and you will get another sad error claiming x64 is not supported, something awful to that nature. Awww man, this far, only to get let down. Nope. We are going to fix that. And this is where ErikVanD's post pointed me to what we do next.
It was said to navigate in the BootCamp 5.0.5033 folder to something of the effect of BootCamp/Drivers/Apple and run the MSI file "BootCamp" (MSI file will say Windows Installer in its description, and not necessarily MSI for anyone not too savy with Windows) **note - NOT .bootcamp (notice the period in the front) and it should work and install the new Windows 8 support for your MBP...but in my case it didn't, which is why im posting how i fixed this. Your setup may somehow be different, but mine gave me an error say it "needs elevated permissions to run, use setup.exe instead. We tried that remember! And it gave us the x64 not supported error. Oh man! Blabbing aside, this file needs to be ran as an administrator, which yeah your the only user, but Windows is funny like that. Normally youd just right click, and select run as administrator, but out the box, that option isnt there when you right click, only install, repair, open with etc. Here's the next trick, you need to add a registry file to enable running as an administrator, dont be afraid, this is an old trick, and really easy.
Open notepad in Windows, and create a new doc, call it Add_MSI_run_as_administrator.reg
Paste this following code into the new doc

Or download the file already made from my company server at http://www.theprojectdev.com/public/pub.html **i put this there as a courtesy to help others like me, its just a complete reg file, so either create your own through copy and pasting above or download it. Either way, put it on your desktop.
Now double click the new registry file, and allow/ok it to do its thing.
Once done, you can discard the file from your desktop, or keep, your choice.
Guess What!? Now we can do the impossible! Lets revisit that solution from before by going to the newest BootCamp 5.0.5033, and navigate to BootCamp/drivers/Apple and select that tricky BootCamp MSI file that wouldnt allow us to run, this time RIGHT CLICK it. Because of our new registry entry we placed, we now have an option to "Run as Administrator" Click that option.
WooHoo! We have done what coudnt be done, BootCamp will now walk you through the installer, and add all the great support for Windows 8 on your mid 09 Macbook Pro that they for some reason neglected!
After the update, you will endure yet another restart. From there, most likely using a wired mouse still, navigate to the system tray icon on the bottom right corner of the screen (little up arrow) and click it. It will pop up a little menu, showing system processes/stuff running, click the gray squared diamond (this is bootcamp) and it will bring up the newest BootCamp control panel. From here, you can nav to trackpad/touchpad and set tap to click (finally) and gestures, etc. This control panel has lots of good stuff to make a MBP user feel comfortable in Windows 8. There you go! You did it!
I really, sincerely hope this helps someone, as it really made my day to get this resolved. I want to add that all On Screen Displays will work (your volume/brightness etc) they keyboard backlighting, and so much more, it really works great. I upgraded my hard drive to 1tb, and installed 8gb of PNY RAM from best buy ($40) and it runs Windows 8, AND OSX fantastically.

Everyone im sorry, i made a mistake informing you which BootCamp support drivers to download from Apple. You see I originally downloaded my Windows 7 Support from the BootCamp Assistant, and had the version number completely wrong.
The first BootCamp install packahe you should down load from http://support.apple.com/downloads/#macoscomponents is actually 4.0.4033
That will be your first BootCamp installation in Windows 8 that works. Im so sorry Markeez for wasting your time, my excitement had blinded me last night.
Also be sure to copy both 4.0.4033's folder and the latest 5.0.5033 folders to your Windows 8 desktop as well, dont run them off your USB stick or DVD/C, whatever media you copied them to.
So Markeez, after you download the correct Windows 7 Support Software 4.0.4033, simply click setup.exe and it will run without any trouble.
Then after the inital BootCamp install is complete, your MBP restarted and all is done, you need to perform the "Run as Administrator" trick i posted above. Its real easy. Open notepad, and copy the EXACT code i posted in the tutorial in a fresh new doc, and save the file to your desktop EXACTLY how i posted it Add_MSI_Run_as_administrator.reg
Now close notepad, and double click the newly created registry file, and allow it access to do what it needs. What this does is allows your run the new installer in BootCamp 5.0.5033 as an administrator, which you wont have the option to unless you use this registry file.
Ok after the registry part is done, go inside the latest BootCamp 5.0.5033 folder, to BootCamp/drivers/Apple and find BootCamp --- probanly the ottom most MSI file, and again it will not say MSI on the right side, it will say Windows Installer or something to that degree. Also do NOT confuse it with a similar file in that folder called .bootcamp this is not the one we need.   OK, so now, using a WIRED MOUSE, right click the BootCamp MSI file, and you will now have the option to Run As Administrator, if you did the registry bit. IF YOU DIDNT do the registry bit, you will only see Install, Repair, Uninstall etc. If thats the case, just download the zip from my company site, it contains only a completed copy of that reg file.
Running this file in the Apple folder as an admin is the key to making this work, let me know if you have any further issues, im watching. Also i apologize everyone, but for some reason i cant edit the tutorial to fix my mistake, very sorry about the confusion.

How to install Windows 7/Vista as 2nd OS and retain predesktop environment (service partition)

This is a step-by-step instruction how to install Windows Vista or Windows 7 as a second OS on a Lenovo Thinkpad that originally shipped with Windows XP AND how to retain the access to the Lenovo Service Partition.
I have been searching the internet for instructions like these but could not find anything useful. So I am posting it
here. Maybe this helps other users.
I have tested the procedure below with installation of Windows Vista Ultimate (64bit) and Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit). I believe that the procedure will also work with the 32bit versions of these OSs. I am not totally convinced that this works when the OS to install is Windows XP (64bit or 32bit). XP has a completely different boot sequence compared to Vista or 7. The basic steps would remain the same, but the XP setup is less forgiving when it finds an unknown partition. If somebody wants to try it out, please post your results as a reply to this forum entry.
Never never never try to install an older OS (like Windows 2000 or NT) as a second OS when XP is already installed! This is doomed to fail.
The procedure below does NOT work for Linux installations. I am not a Linux wizard, but any Linux bootmanager I know about is incompatible with the Lenovo Service Partition.
The procedure was tested on a Thinkpad R61 model 8918-B9G. It should work similar on other models.
You definitely need a service partition with Rescue&Recovery version 4. It will NOT work with older versions of R&R or if the service partition is not a type12 partition (see below how to find out about that).
I assume that the harddisk partitions are unmodified, i.e. still have factory settings. This is likely the case if you
never attempted any OS install or recovery action. If this is not the case, the procedure may or may not work.
You also need a bootable CD with a tool that can change the size of your current system partition. I was using gparted live version 0.5.2-9. ( http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ )
Everything you do is at your own risk. I am in no way related to Lenovo, other than being a customer using their
products.
Step 1) Make a full backup of your harddisk. Get yourself recovery CDs for your Thinkpad model if you don't have any. The changes we are about to make can completely screw up your harddrive. A typo is sufficient for that to happen.
Step 2) Power on the system. Check that you can boot into the Service Partition by pressing the Thinkvantage button when the startup screen appears. (Older systems may have a differently named button.) If there is a problem booting the service partition now, it is likely that the rest of this procedure will not fix it.
Step 3) From the service partition choose 'Warmstart' to reboot the system. Reboot Windows XP, logon.
Open a command prompt. CD to the following directory:
\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\BMGR
On a german language system (like mine) it is
\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\Lenovo\BMGR
If you have an older IBM system the directory may be named
\Program Files\Common Files\IBM\BMGR
or something like that. Maybe you need to search around.
In the following, I will call this the "BMGR dir".
Enter the following command:
bmgr32 /info /v
You should get an output similar to this:

The important thing to look for is the 0x12 partition type in the partition table at the bottom. This is the service
partition. If you do not have a 0x12 partition, then you can stop here because the rest of the procedure will not work
for you.
Step 4) Shutdown and boot gparted from CD. Shrink the system partition to the desired size. Do NOT touch the service partition! Do NOT attempt to create another partition! Leave the new white space on the disk untouched! Apply changes and restart the system.
Step 5) Reboot XP. gparted has set the NTFS dirty bit. This will cause XP to run a full CHKDSK. Depending on how much files there are on the partition this may take considerable time. Let CHKDSK run to completion. When CHKDSK finishes, the system will automatically reboot.
Step 6) XP reboots now. Logon. When loading the desktop, XP will show a popup window, stating that system settings have been changed and new devices been discovered and that the system should be rebooted. This is ok. XP actually recognized the shrunk system partition and applied the necessary changes to its own system parameters. Click YES to reboot the system.
Step 7) XP reboots. Logon. Open a command prompt, CD to the BMGR dir and enter:
bmgr32 /info /v
The output you get should be similar to the output you have seen in step 3, except that the partition 0 size column
shows a smaller value.
Step 8) Shutdown, restart. Check that you can still access the service partition by pressing the blue Thinkvantage button when the system startup screen appears.
Step 9) From the predesktop environment choose warmstart. Reboot XP. Logon, logoff, shutdown.
DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!!! If you start the Windows Vista/7 install right after shutting down from the predesktop
environment, the Win Vista/7 setup program will screw up your harddisk! The Lenovo MBR bootmgr reboot takes two steps for completion. The first step is the shutdown and the second step is executed when booting from harddisk. A boot from the Windows CD will skip this second step and disaster finds its way...
Step 10) Insert the Windows Vista/7 DVD and boot it. Start the setup. Choose "Custom (advanced)" install. It will show the partitions on the disk. Select the white space (unallocated). Click on "disk options (advanced)". Click on "New" to create a new partition in the white space. Keep the default size, click "Apply". Click "Format". A popup window appears stating that the partition may hold OEM data. Continue. Click "Next". Installation starts.

Step 11) Win Vista/XP will reboot several times during installation. You will always see the Windows bootmanager with an entry for "Earlier Windows version" and "Windows Vista/7". DO NOT DARE to touch the blue Thinkvantage button on any reboot or press any function keys!
Step 12) When the installation is finished, check that you can successfully reboot Win Vista/7 by selecting it from the Windows bootmanager.
Step 13) Reboot XP by choosing "Earlier Windows version" from the Windows bootmanager. Open a command prompt. CD to the BMGR dir. Enter the following command:
bmgr32 /info /v
The output will now look like this:

startLBA and size will of course differ, depending on the actual partition sizes you have set. Note that Windows setup moved the service partition to entry 2 of the partition table. If you do not see the 0x12 partition then stop here.
Otherwise the following step will likely screw up you harddisk.

bmgr32 /Fbootmgr.bin /m0 /IBM /v
The output will look like this:

So you have actually regained the Lenovo bootmanager. But you are not done yet.
Step 14) Shutdown. Restart the system. DO NOT PRESS THE BLUE THINKVANTAGE BUTTON AT THE SYSTEM STARTUP SCREEN!!! IT DOES NOT WORK YET! When the system startup screen DISAPPEARS, quickly press F11 (maybe several times). The system should now boot the predesktop environment from the service partition.
Step 15) When the predesktop is there, choose "warmstart". When the system startup screen appears, press the blue Thinkvantage button. The system should again boot into the predesktop. The blue Thinkvantage button now works permanently.
Step 16) Check that you can boot Win XP and Win Vista/7 from the Windows bootmanager. You're done!
