I still don't get your problem. ASM is not a database instance,it never mounts a database, so status 'BLOCKED' is absolutely correct. And as long as you don't want to connect remotely to ASM,this is not an issue. There's nothing wrong in the 'lsnrctl status' output.
then i have to start the listener manually everytime You have to start the listener manually, when startup modeof the service is MANUAL.

  • ASM, Listener, Instance status changes to OFFLINE.

    Hi All,
I have completed the installation part...whereby installed Clusterware (no OCFS2), ASM and the RAC database S/w along with the database. The RAC version is Oracle 10.2.0.1. The installation is done on the CentOS operating system.
The crs_stat -t shows all the resources. I am facing the following issue.
    1) After rebooting the server, most of the resources status changes to UNKNOWN. I need to stop all the resources and then need to restart it again (crs_start -all).
    2) The ASM, Listener and Instances resources status changes to OFFLINE after restarting all the resources. This happen regularly. Below is the output.
    [root@rac1 bin]# ./crs_stat -t

If someone can help me with some solution for Point 2, it will be great.

    Your Database started completely, right?
    You found ASM processes, right?
    You can check by:
    srvctl status asm -n <node_name>
    How?
    try to stop/start cluster again...
Or try to start step by step -> nodeapps -> ASM -> database by use srvctl command-line
anyway if you serious about resulting from crs_stat command-line:
You need to unregister from Cluster and add it again.

Finished step 3.6 Post-Oracle RAC Migration Steps
Now ASM listener will not come ONLINE.
When started manually, it terminates, no error message displayed.
    Questions:
1- Is there a log file to gather more information as to why ASM listener dies?
2- Some crs_stat command to get more info?
3- Or is ASM not coming online, since we've not yet finished the note. The next step is to enable autoconfig on db tier.

    A
lsnrctl servicesshould show the location of your logfile, like:
Listener Log File /opt/asmprd/ora/diag/tnslsnr/vsv1h171ps/listener_vsv1h171ps/alert/log.xmlThis is a XML file which might be hard to read. Most of the time there is also a /opt/asmprd/ora/diag/tnslsnr/vsv1h171ps/listener_vsv1h171ps/trace directory, which contains a clear text logfile
Ofcourse change the given directory name here to the ASM installation path of your installation

  • Which listener should be used in a standalone grid infrastructure env?

    gurus:
I installed a 11.2.0.2 standalone grid infrastructure on a linux box and created a database manually. I then used netca to create my listener which created 2 listener files:
    a. under my DB home:
    aml6:/u00/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/network/admin > cat listener.ora
    # listener.ora Network Configuration File: /u00/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/network/admin/listener.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    LISTENER_ETL =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = aml6.lynk.lynksystems.com)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
    ADR_BASE_LISTENER_ETL = /u00/app/oracle
    b. under my grid home:
    aml6:/u00/app/11.2.0/grid/network/admin > cat listener.ora
LISTENER_ETL=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=IPC)(KEY=LISTENER_ETL)))) # line added by Agent
ENABLE_GLOBAL_DYNAMIC_ENDPOINT_LISTENER_ETL=ON # line added by Agent
I observed that the one under my DB home was the one that really got used when I tried to logon to a database.
    Here are my questions:
    1. what is the use for the listener under my DB home?
    2. what is the use for the listener under my grid home?
    3. the grid infrastructure document says that the default home for listener and tnsnames files are grid home, however, it seemed that I have to use the listener under my db home directory.
    4. which listener is the ASM instance use?
Thanks a lot for your help.

    Thanks Levi and Sebastian.
We have separate listeners in DB homes for Stand Alone grids.
Cluster Grids have got the listeners (SCAN..etc) running out of Grid Home. Still, we have exceptions for the Cluster grid for EBS databases where SCAN is not supported yet and still have a separate listeners for the databases.
This OTN doc also describes a listener in the DB home: http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/db/11g/r2/prod/install/gridinstss/gridinstss.htm
    Hi Raj,
In this OBE, the author explains why he is setting a new Listener for ASM.
To Configure EM Database Control to manage ASM, perform the following steps:
To manage the ASM instance in Enterprise Manager Database Control. you must configure the ASM Instance as a target.
When you configure the ASM target, you must provide the port for the ASM listener.
The Grid Infrastructure installs a listener by default on port 1521, and configures the ASM instance to use this listener.
In this tutorial the database is already installed and has a listener configured on port 1521, the Grid Infrastructure places a listener on port 1522 and the ASM instance is registered with the grid listener. Before Install Grid Infrastructure he already had a database running with the Listener configured and running.
To ensure that the service of ASM will be registered in the Listener of same release he set a new Listener using GUI HOME.
This procedure is correct because the Grid Infrastructure (ASM) is the highest release (So, it's necessary configure Listener in same release), to not use a Listener with prior to release of the Grid Infrastructure(ASM) he created new Listener.
He also could deconfigure the Listener of Oracle Home (database) and configure in the GUI Home. It's a matter of choice.
Observing requirement of the paragraph below, we can set listener from anywhere there is no restriction, it is a matter of best practices only.
The release of the listener must be the same as or later than the latest release of all Oracle databases being serviced through the listener.Cheers,

    Hi all,
I'm trying to create a stand by database with the same tools as described above. My configuration is the same.
I've checked in my database and I already got the value 'Intel Pentium' described in the query. I tried the query anyway but, as I was expecting, it didn't solve anything for me.
If somebody could explain a bit on what actually generate this error and what OMS is looking for in MGMT_TARGET_PROPERTIES, it would be great.
If I find anything I'll update this post.

  • Automatic restart services in 10gR2

    Hello all,
I'm more familiar with services in 11g using "srvctl add" command to add services to start istener, database, asm, crs, etc  automatically.
I was researching the web and found that in 10g, some guys are creating a script in /etc/init.d to automate the services to start automatically.
My question is:  command "srvctl add <service_name>" works the same in 10g as in 11g?
I need to automate the services start (asm, listener, crs and database) in 10gR2.
    Thanks in advance.

    BobKodomo wrote:
Can someone that knows "how to" could POLITELY answer these questions ?
    1. Add ASM  service
    In 11g I used with grid11g profile:
    ASM start
    srvctl add asm -d <DG_NAME>
When I try to execute it in 10g I had the following error:
    srvctl add asm -d DGDATA
    PRKO-2002 : Invalid command line option: -d
    2. Adding listener service
In 11g, I was able to run this command:
    srvctl add listener -l LISTENER
But in 10g I had the error:
    srvctl add listener -l LISTENER
    Usage: srvctl <command> <object> [<options>]
What is the right command in 10g? I was able to run the both commands in 11g.
    Thanks in advance.
Well, since you are having trouble with 10g specifically, I will politely point you to the 10g reference at Server Control Utility Reference
where you can see the valid options for the srvctl command under 10g.   I see that '-d' is not listed as a valid option for 'add asm'.  And 'listener' is not a valid option for the 'add' command.  Exactly as the error messages said.

  • ENterprise Manager SNMP Traps

    Hi all,
I have configured the Database Control (not Grid Control) to send SNMP alert in our monitoring system.
I have added notification rules per target (Instance, Cluster, Database, Host, ASM, Listener). For Each notification rule I have added the metrics and specified the SNMP method.
Now, testing the SNMP alert for Tablespace Space Used (%) , I have created a small tablespace datafile and fill it with data, as you can see below.
The issue is that the tablespace alert is not showing in the monitoring system where a previous test I have made to shutdown the database shows the database down alert on the monitoring system. How can I troubleshoot the issue?

  • Is RAC node configuration  when disk array fails on one node .

    Hi ,
We recently had all the filesystem of node 1 of RAC cluster , turned into read only mode. Upon further investigation it was revealed that it was due to disks array failure on node 1 . The database instance on node 2 is up and running fine . The OS team are rebuilding the node 1 from scratch and will restore oracle installable from the backup .
My question is once all files are restored :
Do we need to add the node to the RAC configuration ?
Do we need to do relink of oracle binary files ?
Can the node be brought up directly once all the oracle installables are restored properly or will the oRacle team require to perform addition steps to bring the node into RAC configuration .Thanks,
    Sachin K

    Hi ,
If the restore fails in some way . We will require to first remove and then add the nodes to the node 1 cluster right ? Kindly confirm on the below steps.
In case of such situation below are the steps we plan to follow:
    version ; 10.2.0.5
    Affected node :prd_node1
    Affected instance :PRDB1
    Surviving Node :prd_node2
    Surviving instance: PRDB2
    DB Listener on prd_node1:LISTENER_PRD01
    ASM listener on prd_node1:LISTENER_PRDASM01
    DB Listener on prd_node2:LISTENER_PRD02
    ASM listener on prd_node2:LISTENER_PRDASM02
Login to the surviving node .In our case its prd_node2
    Step 1 - Remove ONS information :
Execute as root the following command to find out the remote port number to be used
    $cat $CRS_HOME/opmn/conf/ons.config
and remove the information pertaining the node to be deleted using
    #$CRS_HOME/bin/racgons remove_config prd_node1:6200
    Step 2 - Remove resources :
In this step, the resources that were defined on this node has to be removed. These resources include (a) Database (b) Instance (c) ASM. A list of this can
be acquired by running crs_stat -t command from any node
The srvctl remove listener command used below is only applicable in 10204 and higher releases including 11.1.0.6. The command will report an error if the
clusterware version is less than 10204. If clusterware version is less than 10204, use netca to remove the listener
    srvctl remove listener -n prd_node1 -l LISTENER_PRD01
    srvctl remove listener -n prd_node1 -l LISTENER_PRDASM01
    srvctl remove instance -d PRDB -i PRDB1
    srvctl remove asm -n prd_node1 -i +ASM1
    Step 3 Execute rootdeletenode.sh :
From the node that you are not deleting execute as root the following command which will help find out the node number of the node that you want to delete
    #$CRS_HOME/bin/olsnodes -n
this number can be passed to the rootdeletenode.sh command which is to be executed as root from any node which is going to remain in the cluster.
    #$CRS_HOME/install/rootdeletenode.sh prd_node1,1
Step 5 Update the Inventory :
From the node which is going to remain in the cluster run the following command as owner of the CRS_HOME. The argument to be passed to the CLUSTER_NODES is a
comma seperated list of node names of the cluster which are going to remain in the cluster. This step needs to be performed from once per home (Clusterware,
    ASM and RDBMS homes).
    ## Example of running runInstaller to update inventory in Clusterware home
    $CRS_HOME/oui/bin/runInstaller -updateNodeList ORACLE_HOME=$ORA_CRS_HOME "CLUSTER_NODES=prd_node2" CRS=TRUE
    ## Optionally enclose the host names with {}
    ## Example of running runInstaller to update inventory in ASM home
    $CRS_HOME/oui/bin/runInstaller -updateNodeList ORACLE_HOME=$ASM_HOME "CLUSTER_NODES=prd_node2"
    ## Optionally enclose the host names with {}
    ## Example of running runInstaller to update inventory in RDBMS home
    $CRS_HOME/oui/bin/runInstaller -updateNodeList ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_HOME "CLUSTER_NODES=prd_node2"
    ## Optionally enclose the host names with {}
We need steps to add the node back into the cluster . Can anyone please help us on this ?
    Thanks,

  • Srvctl issue

    Oracle 11gR1 RHEL 4 64-bit
    Hi All,
I am having a strange problem here. There seems to be a disconnect between the database's status and what srvctl shows. First, let me give you a quick background on the problem. Initially, I had upgraded from 10g to 11g. However, I was having some Java issues (wrong version was on one node, so Oracle Support said to re-install Oracle Clusterware) so I had to re-install Oracle Clusterware after removing it. So I uninstalled CRS a.k.a Oracle Clusterware completely. So I lost both my 10g CRS install as well as the 11g upgraded version. Anyhow, I reinstall CRS 11g and the resources come up (ONS,VIP,GSD) but no other ones show up like ASM, Listener or the database instances eventhough they all existed i.e. ASM instance and database instance. So I started manually creating the services using srvctl. I was able to create them all (listener, ASM and database instances). However, there seems to be a disconnect with srvctl and the database. That is, if the database instances status in CRS show offline, then I can connect to the database. See below:

I guess what I am trying to understand is, obviously, why this is happenning, but also the relationship of SRVCTL and the database (using SQLPLUS) in terms of starting/stopping the database instances. To me it seems like there is a loss of connectivity/relationship between the srvctl resources and the actual database. Maybe it happened when I had to create all the services manually? I don't know. What could be the cause of this and a possible solution?
Could anyone shed any light on this? I would appreciate any help.
    Thank you.

It may be some OCR corruption, You can check the actual defination of resource stored in OCR using 'ocrdump' command. There is no straigh forward answer for your problem.
Review the OCR dump first and see if there is discrepencies related to the cluster resource type 'inst'. Looks like some mismatch in cluster action sccript if cluster is offline it should stop the service (in this case instance) automatically if configured properly.
You can also enable the degugging for that resource using
    crsctl debug log res '<resourcename>:5'
This will produce detailed information about that resource under $CH/log/$HOSTNAME/racg directory.

  • Applying 11gR2 GI PSU with 10gR2 databases

On a Linux-x86-64 cluster I have 11.2.0.1 Clusterware/ASM/Listener running without patches and a RAC database running under the old 10.2.0.4.1 home (PSU 1). I'm thinking of applying the GI PSU 9655006 for 11.2.0.1.2 but I notice it includes the database PSU for 11.2.0.1.2 and I am afraid the patch will attempt to update the 10.2.0.4 home.
Looking at the Readme for the GI PSU I can't find any warnings about applying the patch with 10g databases present. Has anyone tried this? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chucky,
    actually it will not.
Before a patch is installed OPatch checks the inventory if the prerequisites are o.k. and since 10.2 is not a valid prerequisite for an 11.2 patch, it won't install into the DB home.
The reason the patch includes the DB patch is, that the 11.2 GI home includes oracle db executable (for ASM) and that needs to be patched.
However if you still fear that something may go wrong, you can explicitly tell opatch auto to only patch the GI home.
It's in the readme or if you execute opatch auto -h:
    -oh Database/Clusterware home locations
    comma_delimited_list_of_oralcehomes_to_patch

  • Benefit of RAC over single instance

    Dear,
There would be up-gradation of our main system from oracle 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.4. The management wants to stay on single instance as it is now. But Oracle RAC is something that is must for all the critical system I need to present the benefit of RAC over single instance considering the high cost. Can you show me the benefits of RAC that ppl would go for it instead  of single instance????

    Hi,
The Benefits of Oracle Real Application Clusters.
High Availability-Oracle Real Application Clusters 11g provides the foundation for data centre-high availability. It is also
an integral component of Oracle’s Maximum Availability Architecture, which provides best practices to
provide the highest availability for your data center. Oracle Real Application provides the following ke
characteristics essential for a high available data management
Reliability – The Oracle Database is known for its reliability. Oracle Real Application Clusters takes this
a step further by removing the database server as a single point of failure. If an instance fails, the
remaining instances in the server pool remain open and active. Oracle Clusterware monitors all Oracle
processes and immediately restarts any failed component.
Recoverability – The Oracle Database includes many features that make it easy to recover from all
types of failures. If an instance fails in an Oracle RAC database, it is recognized by another instance in
the server pool and recovery will start automatically. Fast Application Notification (FAN) and Fast
Connection Failover (FCF) or Transparent Application Failover (TAF) make it easy for applications to
mask component failures from the user.
Error Detection – Oracle Clusterware automatically monitors Oracle RAC databases as well as other
Oracle processes (ASM, listener, etc) and provides fast detection of problems in the environment. It also
automatically recovers from failures often before users noticed that a failure has occurred. Fast
Application Notification (FAN) provides the ability for applications to receive immediate notification of
cluster component failures in order to re-issue the transaction before the failure surfaces.
Continuous Operations – Oracle Real Application Clusters provides continuous service for both
planned and unplanned outages. If a server (or an instance) fails, the database remains open and the
application is able to access data. Most database maintenance operations can be completed without
downtime and are transparent to the user. Many other maintenance tasks can be done in a rolling
fashion so application downtime is minimized or removed. Fast Application Notification and Fast
Connection Failover assist applications in meeting service levels.
Scalability-Oracle Real Application Clusters provides a unique technology for scaling applications. Traditionally,
when database servers ran out of capacity, they were replaced with new and larger servers. As servers
grow in capacity, they are more expensive. For databases using Oracle RAC, there are alternatives for
increasing the capacity. Applications that have traditionally run on large SMP servers can be migrated to
run on pools of small servers. Alternatively, you can maintain the investment in the current hardware and
add a new servers to the pool (or to create a server pool) to increase the capacity. Adding servers to a
server pool with Oracle Clusterware and Oracle RAC does not require an outage and as soon as the new
instances are started, the application can take advantage of the extra capacity. All servers in the server pool
must run the same operating system and the same version of Oracle, but they do not have to be of exactly
the same capacity. Customers today run server pools that fit their needs often using servers of (slightly)
    different characteristics.
