Assign an SMTP server to particular contact/s

I've got a couple of SMTP servers set up in Leopard Mail; one I use for personal correspondence, another for work related mails.
Is there a way to set up Mail so that when sending to, say, a known client, the message is sent using always just the work SMTP?

Well, I've tried that just now and it didn't seem to work that way - unless I misunderstood your post.
I've got four separate mailboxes under Inbox. With some messages, replying to it within an individual mailbox still defaults to an SMTP that isn't for that mailbox. In some messages what you say works, but others still has the problem I described.

  • Goldmine Contact Management and using Verizon as SMTP server

One of our sales reps must use his personal Verizon settings to send his email in Goldmine.  His user name and password are correct and work with Verizon web mail.  When using his Verizon SMTP settings in Goldmine, server keeps rejecting as bad user and password.  Using port 465  SSL and Login type authentication.  Need to contact someone at Verizon, but can't locate anyone who can help me since this is not my account.

For the sake of example, we are going to pretend that we are setting up fictional account "[email protected]" and the password for logging into that account in webmail is "fakepassword" - Again, this is a fictitious account for the sake of an example.
The settings for using Verizon's SMTP (outgoing) server would be:
    Outgoing Server: smtp.verizon.net
    Server Requires Authentication: Yes
    Username: fakeacct
    Password: fakepassword
Requires a Secure Connection (SSL): Yes
    Port: 465
If you are given the option anywhere for Secure Password Authentication (SPA), set it to No, Normal, Plain, etc.
These settings should work unless it is a Verizon/Yahoo account, in which case the SMTP server name is outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net
If all of that is set up and it's still not working, your best bet is to provide a screenshot of the settings (with personal information blocked/removed) and any errors you are getting.

  • Assigning text tone to particular contact doesn't work on my Mac

I have been trying to assign text tones to particular contacts in Yosemite by clicking the drop-down while editing my contacts in the Contacts app and choosing the text tone, but it doesn't seem to work. • Cannot send emails - connection to SMTP server timeout

I cannot send emails from my Thunderbird. Every time I try, an error message shows up saying that the connection to SMTP server has timed out:
    "Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.lineone.net timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator."
I have looked at many different possible solutions and tried them, but nothing seems to be working. I have tried several different ports, failed to send in Safe Mode with Networking and Thunderbird safe mode without add-ons and tried many different settings. I have ensured that the my settings on Thunderbird match the settings that my ISP recommends. My anti-virus software is not affecting it either. Maybe there is something I am missing but I would really appreciate any suggestions!
    Here is some general info:
    Mail provider: lineone
    ISP: BT
    Anti-virus software: AVG
    OS: Windows Vista
    Thunderbird version: 31.5.0

    Hello @shredo,
Firstly, I would suggest reading this support article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-send-messages
If that doesn't help, try some of these things (not sorted in any particular order):
*Test your connection in another network. There might just be some blocked ports in your router or conflict of some sort.
    * Test your smtp settings in another email client (to ensure that they actually work). If it doesn't work, there might be some missmatch with the settings (even though you have ensured that they match), or some restriction by your router or something.
    * Apparently, compacting your thunderbird folders might help with this issue (something to do with too many "deleted", that are still there) - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_Tips_:_Compacting_Folders
    I hope this helps.

  • Apple SMTP server IP not reverse mapped

I have discovered that the SMTP server that Apple is using to reply my outgoing iCloud email (17.111.211.51) does not have a valid reverse hostname associated with it. This causes some of my email to be rejected by other mail servers. I do know that some of Apple SMTP servers are correctly reverse mapped,. but not this particular one.
    i.e.
    host 17.172.220.237
    237.220.172.17.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer st11p02mm-asmtp002.mac.com.
    237.220.172.17.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer st11p02mm-asmtpout002.mac.com.
This seems to be an oversight bt Apple's network administarators. I'm hoping that this message can be forwarded to the appropriate dept.

    Hello.
I'm hoping someone can help with a problem I've been having today.
I have a Gmail account which I use on my Mac (MacBook Pro, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, System 10.6.8), my iPad and my ancient iPhone. Everything has worked perfectly for the last two years until today when it stopped sending e-mail from any device. On my iPad, it tells me that the SMTP server 'does not allow relay'. On my MacBook, it simply refuses to send it and prompts me to choose another SMTP server (which, alas, I don't have).
At any rate, here is a list of things I've already tried:
    1. I tried switching my computer off and on again. This didn't work.
    2. I have deleted the account (from both Mac and iPad) and set it up again. This didn't work.
    3. I have deleted just the SMTP server details and re-entered them (both Mac and iPad). This also didn't work.
    4. I manually changed the SMTP port to 25 and 587. This didn't work.
    5. I have tried to send e-mail from a different WiFi network and from 3G (Mac, iPad and iPhone). This didn't work.
    6. I have tried setting up a completely new Gmail account and using the SMTP server of that account to send messages. Bizarrely, this sort of worked: it allowed me to send a message, but the message showed up from the new account rather than from my primary account. However this is not an ideal solution. I would much prefer having a single e-mail account which both sends and receives.
    7. I also tried a variety of other things, but nothing worked.
I fear the problem may actually be with Gmail, and not with any of the Apple products in question. I spent about an hour trying to contact Google, but I don't think they will get back to me.
If anyone has any brilliant ideas, I would be tremendously grateful.
    All the best.
The issue is with gmail.  There are 10 post already about this in the iphone forum.

  • My e-mails are not sending. "connection to SMTP server timed out." How do I get this working?

As of yesterday, I am receiving e-mails fine; however, unable to send. Everytime I try to send an e-mail, I get "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server (my mail address) timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator.
I received help from lunarpages (they host my domain); however, they were unable to resolve the issue. They suggested something is blocking IP, or need to update Thunderbird, or there's a firewall there...
    Help!!!
My clients are waiting for responses to e-mails!
    Thank you.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]

  • Cannot connect to smtp server

    hi,
i have been using microsoft entourage for mac 2004 for almost a year now and have been receiving and sending email just fine until a few days ago. i checked with my ISP and they said that the problem is not with my e-mail address and to check with entourage help, which turned out to be very little help.
so, now im trying to set up my email address to use the mac mail program, and i get the same type of error- a problem the smtp server... so i have the same problem i had with entourage: i can recieve email, but not send it.
    any ideas?

If you are no longer able to send messages with this account and SMTP server using Entourage (and the settings have not been changed) and the Mail.app is unable to send messages with the same account settings, this indicates there is a problem with the SMTP server settings or there is a temporary problem with the SMTP server.
The connection to the server "smtp.snet.yahoo.com" on port 25 timed out.
This error message indicates there is a problem with the SMTP server settings.
SBC has been known to make changes and not informing their customers beforehand and with both Entourage and the Mail.app not being able to send messages with the same settings, this is a strong indication the problem lies with SBC or the SMTP server settings and not with your Mac.
I would contact SBC technical support again and nicely request to speak with a supervisor or the next level up.

  • How can I control SMTP server list in Mail?

I've seen a lot of discussion about e.g. deleting servers, but it often includes smug replies like "click the delete button" when there is often no such button. I have found a possible 'get around' to this particular problem by changing the server data to something that doesn't exist, save that, then select the server again from the list and hey presto, there is now a Delete button you can use. But again, that is not the full story because if that server is used as the primary server for any other account, you cannot modify the data.
Not only that, but you CANNOT simply swap servers so that e.g. an account uses one of the other servers as its primary server. Unless I'm missing something major here, it is NOT possible to move servers. You can change the data for the server to be exactly the same as another server, but that just means you now have an identical duplicate. Once a server entry has been created, it is an independent data entity.
So I seem to have several problems here.
    1. A server cannot be deleted if it's in use as a primary for any account.
    2. Servers cannot be moved, i.e. swapped between 'Primary' and 'Other'
    3. Simply editing the server data does not 'merge' it with any other entry that may have the exact same data.
    4. When creating an account, you cannot pick the outgoing SMTP server from the list of ones already created. Simply entering the same data as one that already exists may use that existing server, but may create a new duplicate. I have seen both of these occur and once there's a duplicate, you cannot get rid of it.
I want 3 accounts to all use the same 'Primary' server and also have the same 'Other' server. IOW, only 2 actual servers. After the first 2 accounts are created, that's what I have. Somehow they seem to be able to 'share' the same servers. But when I create the third account and enter the same data for its SMTP server as the others use as their primary (i.e. exactly the same process as when creating the second account), for some reason it does NOT use the existing matching server and I now get a third server created. I simply cannot get around this since whatever I do, each of the duplicates is used as a primary and so cannot be deleted. If I could swap them around so that the third account was using another account as its primary, then I could delete the duplicate and all would be well, but as pointed out above, that's not possible.
I'm hoping that I'm simply wrong about all this and it is actually possible to do what I currently believe it impossible. Can anyone explain how to actually control this server list?

i have exactly the same problem using 10.9.4 - did you ever get a reply?

    3. Opened Outlook and tried to manually add a POP3 account by specifying the incoming and outgoing Server details.

  • How to find out about the SMTP Server

    Hi,
I have been trying to configure groupware in the portal - in particular I want to enable the sending of emails through the portal. I already have a how-to-guide that that seems to explain the steps quite well. However, it mentions that I need to know the SMTP Server of the email. Can you tell me how to find out about the SMTP Server? Where do I need to look for the name of it?
    Thank you and regards,

    Hi Katharina,
you need the SMTP server of your company. This means you can't look for it in the portal, but have to ask the responsible person in your company.

  • Mail 5 and SMTP server list

    Hi,
ever since my upgrade to OS X Lion, I've noticed that the usage of the SMTP server list in Mail 5 seems to have changed. In the past, said list contained ALL configured SMTP servers. When configuring e-mail accounts (e.g. MobileMe) you could specify a default SMTP server from the server list and check a checkbox to ONLY use the specified server for outgoing mail of an account.
In Lion the meaning of this server list seems to have changed and I think I have discovered a bug that prevents me from using only a specific SMTP server with an account.
For accounts that are supported by Lion and listed under the "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" Preference Pane, Mail 5 seems to always use a default server setting for outgoing mail. For GMail, this default server seems to use SSL. However, for MobileMe the default server is not the service's SSL SMTP server.
Sending mail on non-SSL ports is a problem for me for two reasons:
    1.) Obviously this a security/privacy issue.
2.) I'm a student and when logged into my universities network I can't send e-mail on default e-mail ports (25). Our servers block any outgoing e-mail on ports other than SSL/TLS ports.
So far this shouldn't be a problem, because you should be able to overwrite Mail's default server by configuring another MobileMe SMTP server with SSL in the server list and checking the checkbox depicted in the below screenshot.
Unfortunately, whenever I select the SSL enabled MobileMe SMTP server, activate the checkbox and save my changes, Mail will revert to the the default SMTP server without SSL immediately. If I delete the default server from the server list, it pops up again after saving the changes. There seem to be just two ways of sending e-mail using a different server than the default one:
    1. Don't check the checkbox and specify the SMTP server for each e-mail you want to send.
    2. Send using the default server. If sending the mail fails (because I am in my university's network), select the SSL SMTP server in the trouble-shooting popup.
Option one is annoying. Option two still bears the security/privacy problem and is annoying, because it takes ages for Mail to accept that a server does not seem to work.
There seems to be no way of fixing this behavior and I have it on both iMac and my Macbook Air. Is this a bug? Do you have any suggestions for a fix?
    Thanks a lot,
    Felix

    Felix,
I agree, I think it is a bug. My wife is experiencing the exact same issue on her MacBook after upgrading to Lion.
I submitted Mail feedback tonight to Apple. I hope they get this fixed pronto. My wife prefers Mail to the web interface or using her iPhone for mail. Thanks for explaining the issue.

  • Finding proper smtp server for outgoing mail

I added my school's e-mail account and i can receive mail just fine. I'm having trouble finding the right server name to send mail from that school address.
Is there any general rule for what a server should be called, or is it specific and i need to find out from the school?

There are not har and fast rules about naming of SMTP servers. Naming convention usually results in 'mail.yourdomain.com' or 'smtp.yourdomain.com' but the naming is just a preference of whoever set up the server. You generally need to ask your mail server administrator for the name and/or access information. There are some definite caveats that are likely going to affect you however --
    - Most mail admins do not allow SMTP access to their servers from off their network unless they've configured/enabled SMTP Authentication or some other way of verifying that you're really who you claim to be. Again, your mail system admin can let you know if they support this and how to configure Mail.
    - It is almost always acceptable to use the SMTP server of your ISP (comcast, bellsouth, etc) regardless of the POP/IMAP account you are checking. You do not need to use your @comcast or @bellsouth email address to send through those servers.
    - When in doubt about server settings, mail server admins would generally be happy with you contacting your local helpdesk or admins to be sure you're using the correct settings.

It's possible that your provider has made a change.
I think STARTTLS usually is used with port 587, instead of the standard SSL port 465.
Could you look up your provider's current SMTP settings to see whether your "Outgoing Server" settings need to be updated? If it's difficult to translate between your provider's help page and Thunderbird's dialog controls, you could provide a link to your provider's help page.
