Assigning a SQL NULL to an SSIS string - A SSIS Flaw ?

Hi,
I fetch a result set with an execute SQL task. It has only one column NullTime varchar. It has three rows, first one is NULL. I want to simply iterate and display the value of these rows. If I do it only by C# script, then there is no problem. The NULL
is displayed as a blank. The same thing can also be done with a foreach loop.
How to do it with foreach - use that loop to read each row and set the value of each row to SSIS string User::STR_WORD. Then, simply display User::STR_WORD with a C# script task.
In the pure C# method, I can even assign the blank value (actually a NULL) to the SSIS string. But with foreach loop method, I get an error because of the NULL value.
The error is -
Error: The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::STR_WORD" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object.
How do I fix this error ? Is script the only alternative to what seems to be a flawed for
loop ?

Hi Blatso,
Can we get some more specific details on your set up? Here is what I have:
You are storing a result set from an Execute SQL task in an object variable. This result set has one column and three records. The first record is NULL, the other two have data. Does that First record have to be a null value? If not try to handle the null
value in your SQL that generates the Result set for example:
COALESCE(ColumnName, 'NullValueWasHere')
What is the data type of the variable "User:STR_WORD". I assume string but i'm not sure. What kind of data are you bringing in from your execute SQL Statement? Double check your variable and make sure it is a string.
((I just tried passing a NULL value from an object variable to a string variable in a For Each Loop and I got the same error. So i'm not sure if there is some trick to getting the Null Value to work, guess I never came across that. I used coalesce to replace
the NULL value and now it works fine.))

    I am trying to convert an SQL server int to SSIS int. When I set it to int 32, i get an error -
    [Execute SQL Task] Error: An error occurred while assigning a value to variable "intMy":
    "The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::intMy" differs from the current variable type.
    Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object.
    when i change it to int16, i get the same error. also, ssis silently changes the int16 to int32. Could this be a bug ? How do you convert an sql server int to an ssis int ?

    Hi blastoSO,
    Is the data type of the target column in the SQL Server table Int or BigInt? I have tested the issue in both SSIS 2008 R2 and SSIS 2012. In SSRS 2008 R2, the Int/BigInt type column value cannot be mapped to an Int16 or Int32 type SSIS variable with the error
    you have encountered, however, in SSIS 2012, everything goes well.
    In SSIS 2008 R2, we can work around this issue by map the result set to a String type SSIS variable (vStr), and then create a new Int16 or Int32 type variable (vInt) which is evaluated as expression and retrieves value from the previous string variable.
    For the expression of the variable vInt, we can set its expression to (DT_UI4)@[User::vStr]. Besides, keep in mind that you need to assign an integer value for the string type variable at design time to make the expression for the variable vInt pass the validation.

  • oms_error Message:[oms] empty or null xml map request string.

    I'm using mapviewer. I create a stored procedure in oracle that uses the utl_http package to make the map request. The omserver response with an error but when i make a map request via internet explorer the server response its ok and show me the correspondent map. This is my pl/sql code it fails in this line:
    UTL_HTTP.SET_HEADER(l_http_req, 'Content-Type', 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded');
         UTL_HTTP.SET_HEADER(l_http_req, 'Content-Lenght', LENGTH(map_request));
         UTL_HTTP.SET_HEADER(l_http_req, 'Host', 'cobogis09');
         UTL_HTTP.SET_HEADER(l_http_req, 'Port', '8888');
    As you can see it tells to me that the map request string is empty but im sending the map request in the next way:
         UTL_HTTP.WRITE_TEXT(l_http_req, '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><map_request datasource="stream" srid="8307" basemap="" width="960" height="768" antialiasing="false" format="GIF_URL" title="Demonstration"></map_request>');
         l_http_resp := utl_http.get_response(l_http_req);
         utl_http.read_text(l_http_resp, l_value);
         response := sys.XMLTYPE.createxml(l_value);
         utl_http.end_response(l_http_resp);

    img_url := response.EXTRACT('/map_response/map_image/map_content/@url').getstringval();
    obviously because the server response its not ok
    the server response is (i get this message in my l_value variable):

  • Garbage Collection facilitation by assigning variables to null

    Hello,
    I understand Garbage Collection (GC) can be facilitated by assigning variables to null. Is this true for all variables?
    I have a class and there are some member variables which are strings. Also i have some methods with some string variables declared and defined inside the method. I am assigning null to class member variables and also the string variables of the method.
    is it correct to assign null and faciliate GC for the string variables declared and defined inside the method?
    Class A {
    String t1;
    public void test() {
    String t2 = "test";
    // processing
    t2 = null; // Will this facilitate GC?
    public static void main (String[] args) {
    test();
    A obj = new A();
    A.t1 = "testclass";
    A.t1 = null; // Will this faciliate GC?
    Thanks, Aravinth

    In fact, the java heap is divided into a space for new allocations, and two survivor spaces. The algorithm for when collection occurs in each space is complex, and tuning GC is an interesting topic all its own. Follow the best advice you have been given ... chillax. The JVM has GC under control.
    <think/> Of course, having said this, you can have memory leaks if you create references that never go out of scope, even if they are no longer used. Avoid this.

  • How to execute an SQL query present in a string inside an ABAP program?

    hello,
    How to execute an SQL query present in a string inside an ABAP program

    Raut,
    You can execute Native SQl statements.
    Ex: To use a Native SQL statement, you must precede it with the EXEC SQL statement, and follow it with the ENDEXEC statement as follows:
    EXEC SQL [PERFORMING <form>].
      <Native SQL statement>
    ENDEXEC.
    There is no period after Native SQL statements. Furthermore, using inverted commas (") or an asterisk (*) at the beginning of a line in a native SQL statement does not introduce a comment as it would in normal ABAP syntax. You need to know whether table and field names are case-sensitive in your chosen database.
    In Native SQL statements, the data is transported between the database table and the ABAP program using host variables. These are declared in the ABAP program, and preceded in the Native SQL statement by a colon (:). You can use elementary structures as host variables. Exceptionally, structures in an INTO clause are treated as though all of their fields were listed individually.
    If the selection in a Native SQL SELECT statement is a table, you can pass it to ABAP line by line using the PERFORMING addition. The program calls a subroutine <form> for each line read. You can process the data further within the subroutine.
    As in Open SQL, after the ENDEXEC statement, SY-DBCNT contains the number of lines processed. In nearly all cases, SY-SUBRC contains the value 0 after the ENDEXEC statement. Cursor operations form an exception: After FETCH, SY-SUBRC is 4 if no more records could be read. This also applies when you read a result set using EXEC SQL PERFORMING.
    EXEC SQL PERFORMING loop_output.
      SELECT connid, cityfrom, cityto
      INTO   :wa
      FROM   spfli
      WHERE  carrid = :c1
    ENDEXEC.

  • Putting a null character in a String?

    Hi,
    I need to send a null character through a nio channel. Specifically, it needs to be decoded from a String into a byte array. Can I append a null character to a String so that getBytes() method will return it? Thanks,
    ranko

    Thanks, I tried that but it doesn't work. I also
    tried appending '\0' and an uninitialized character
    which should by default have a value of a null
    character. I tried creating a String out of a char
    array that has one element containing a null character
    but that did not work either. I guess that since null
    characters end the String, you cannot actually add
    them to the body of the String. Or is there a way?FYI, strings aren't null-terminated in Java.

  • Converting SQL NULL data

    Hi,
    I want to distinguish zero and null from sql.
    JDBC Developers Guide and Reference
    Java represents a SQL NULL datum by the Java value null. Java datatypes fall into
    two categories: primitive types (such as byte, int, float) and object types (class
    instances). The primitive types cannot represent null. Instead, they store the null
    as the value zero (as defined by the JDBC specification). This can lead to ambiguity
    when you try to interpret your results.
    In contrast, Java object types can represent null. The Java language defines an
    object wrapper type corresponding to every primitive type (for example, Integer
    for int, Float for float) that can represent null. The object wrapper types must
    be used as the targets for SQL data to detect SQL NULL without ambiguity.
    How can used?

    You can build two hierarchies under the same dimesion,one for the member of MARKET and another for the member of No Market,using the filter at the same time .

  • How do I automatically backup SQL Agent jobs and SSIS packages on the mirror daily?

    I have seen this question asked before but I could not find a satisfactory answer. What is the best solution to get your SQL Agent jobs/schedules/etc. and your SSIS packages on the mirror server? Here's the details:
    Server A is the principal with 2 DBs mirrored over to server B. Everything is fine and dandy, DBs are synched and all good. In Disaster Recovery testing, we need to bring up server B, which now will serve as the principal. Server A is inaccessible. Now,
    we need all our jobs that are setup in server A to be in server B, ready to go, but disabled. We also need all our SSIS packages properly stored. Yes, we store our packages in the MSDB in server A.
    Now, I can see a few answers coming my way.
    1- Backup the MSDB to server B. When you bring server B up as principal in DR, restore the MSDB. All your jobs,schedules,steps, SSIS packages will be there. Is this possible? Can this be done on server B without rendering it incapable of serving as the principal
    for the mirrored DBs? My fear with this option is that there may be information in the MSDB itself about the mirroring state of the DBs? Or is all that in the Master DB? Have you tried this?
    2- Right click each job, script them out, re-create them on server B... No, thank you very much. :) I am looking for an AUTOMATED, DAILY backup of the jobs and SSIS packages. Not a manual process. Yes, we do change jobs and packages quite often and doing
    the job twice on two servers is not an option.
    3- Use PowerShell.. Really? Are we going back to scripting at the command prompt like that, that fast?
    Since I fear option number 3 will be the only way to go, any hints on scripts you guys have used that you like that does what I need to do?
    Any other options?
    Any help GREATLY appreciated. :-) I can be sarcastic but I am a good guy..

    I would go with option number 3. Once  you have a script simple run it....
    param([string]$serverName,[string]$outputPath)
    function script-SQLJobs([string]$server,[string]$outputfile)
        [reflection.assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo") | Out-Null

        $db = New-Object Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Database
        $scrp = New-Object Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Scripter($srv)
        $scrp.Options.ScriptDrops = $FALSE
        $scrp.Options.WithDependencies = $TRUE
        $jobs = $srv.JobServer.get_Jobs()
        $jobs=$jobs | Where-Object {$_.Name -notlike "sys*"}

    I am new to ORACLE, moving over from MS SQL Server. Is it true that you cannot enter an empty string into a NOT NULL VARCHAR2?
    I am trying to convert data from an existing DB and I NEED to be able to have an empty string as much of the code base is using this to validate data (vs. a NULL). Is there any solution at all for this problem? I really do not want to keep my existing DB running but there is too much time involved converting code.
    Thanks, In Advance

    Bryna,
    In Oracle database, Oracle treats NULL and empty string
    column the same. Therefore, you cannot insert an empty string into a NOT NULL column.
    In OracleDataReader, if you want to find out if the column contains the NULL values, use the OracleDataReader.IsDBNull() function.
    Thanks

  • Oracle 8i Lite: logging to sql plus - uid, password, host string - whats that

    If i install "Oracle 8i Lite" (just locally, not networked). There are two important things : "Navigator", and "SQL Plus". If in navigator, I create a local database called "xxx" (tables under 'system' user). Then if i need to query - i go to SQL Plus. Fine, but how do we log in - what is the "host string" ?.
    The login needs, Userid, Password, Host String. In some docs, it said the userid, password for 'system' account is 'system, manager' respectively. Anyways, now the host string , i had read the 'host string' will be like "@databasename", so I think for me, it will be "@xxx"
    But the way, I'm understing, i cant log, and SQL Plus says something "TNS: could not resolve service name". Maybe i have to something with that tnsnames.ora file....?
    Incase, you could give ANY information, kindly inform.
    Thanks

    Host string usually refers to the host string that is stored in your TNSNAMES.ORA file. You can open TNSNAMES.ORA with a text editor.
    If you get "TNS: could not resolve service name", it's either you have not start the database or your configuration in TNSNAMES.ORA is wrong.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

  • PL/SQL numeric error:character buffer string too small

    I am always getting this error message when I first try to run my package.
    But this always happen on the first time. When I then try to run it for second time, no problem.
    So it can't be due to syntax or logic.
    Could it be due to package state?

    How are they being initialised? Is it just a straight assignment?
    Can you copy + paste the exact error you are getting...
    SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE pkg_Test
      2  IS
    3 pc_TooBig CONSTANT VARCHAR2(1) := 'AB';
      4
      5     PROCEDURE p_test;
