Converting SQL NULL data
Hi,
I want to distinguish zero and null from sql.
JDBC Developers Guide and Reference
Java represents a SQL NULL datum by the Java value null. Java datatypes fall into
two categories: primitive types (such as byte, int, float) and object types (class
instances). The primitive types cannot represent null. Instead, they store the null
as the value zero (as defined by the JDBC specification). This can lead to ambiguity
when you try to interpret your results.
In contrast, Java object types can represent null. The Java language defines an
object wrapper type corresponding to every primitive type (for example, Integer
for int, Float for float) that can represent null. The object wrapper types must
be used as the targets for SQL data to detect SQL NULL without ambiguity.
How can used?
You can build two hierarchies under the same dimesion,one for the member of MARKET and another for the member of No Market,using the filter at the same time .

DB LINK Oracle to SQL Server SQL Server TimeStamp converts to Oracle Date
Hi All,
I have created a DB link between Oracle 10g 10.2.0.5 to SQL server 2005 using Oracle 11g gateway. When I execute a query from Oracle that selects data from SQL server using the DBLINK then the column value of type Timestamp from SQL server gets converted to Date data type in Oracle and it losses the time value.
Is there some way (in gateway configurations or in select query sql ) that the SQL server data type Timestamp gets converted to Oracle's Timestamp?
Please help.
Best Regards!
Irfan
Edited by: irf_mas on Mar 13, 2012 3:23 AMYou're getting the ORA-2070 error as the gateway that you are using is not supporting the to_timestamp function in this context. You need to rewrite the code.
Best would be if you first check out the data format that is sent as a string when you just select the date column - for example:
data_create_dt
Jan 11 2012 1:40PM
Now the easiest way is to make sure the format you are using in your where clause matches the string from the SQL Server:
select * from "data_ms_view"@FREETDS_DG4ODBC_EMGTW_11_2_0_3 where "data_create_dt"<'Jan 11 2012 1:41PM';
which will result in:
data_create_dt
Jan 11 2012 1:40PM
BTW,
it works with all formats the SQL Server understands:
SQL> select * from "data_ms_view"@FREETDS_DG4ODBC_EMGTW_11_2_0_3 where "data_create_dt">'11-JAN-12 01.40.00.000000000 AM';
data_create_dt
Jan 11 2012 1:40PM
Another way using binds:
SQL> variable datum varchar2(26);
SQL> exec select to_char(systimestamp,'MON dd yyyy hh:mi') into :datum from dual;
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> print datum
DATUM
MAR 19 2012 08:29
SQL> select * from "data_ms_view"@FREETDS_DG4ODBC_EMGTW_11_2_0_3 where "data_create_dt" <:datum;
data_create_dt
Jan 11 2012 1:40PM
There are several ways to get a result, just make sure you don't use an unsupported function in your statement. A list of supported functions is found in the manual. -
Import or Convert Visio database diagram for SQL Developer Data Modeling
Hi,
Would you please advise on how it would be possible to convert an existing Visio 2007 ERD diagram for import into SQL Developer Data Modeling?
I have tried to save the model as XML Stencil, Template and Drawing, but could not successfully import it into SQL Developer Data Modeling.
Appreciate your input on this!
Cheers!Those are just drawing formats and don't contain any useful information about the datamodel. If you can generate ddl from the diagram you can import that, but visio is really just a drawing tool with partial data modeling addins.

Hello,
Could anyone please tell me how I can insert a null date into an oracle table dynamically? Here are my codes:
DATA: LV_KEY(10),
LV_DATE TYPE D.
TRY.
EXEC SQL.
INSERT INTO Z_ORACLE_TABLE
( KEY_FIELD, OPTION_DATE )
VALUES
( :LV_KEY, TO_DATE( :LV_DATE, 'YYYYMMDD' ) )
ENDEXEC.
ENDTRY.
Somehow, Oracle gives an error if LV_DATE is initial ('00000000'), saying the date is not between -49xx to ....
I could have done the following but it is kind of dumb:
TRY.
IF :LV_DATE IS INITIAL.
EXEC SQL.
INSERT INTO Z_ORACLE_TABLE
( KEY_FIELD, OPTION_DATE )
VALUES
( :LV_KEY, NULL )
ENDEXEC.
ELSE.
EXEC SQL.
INSERT INTO Z_ORACLE_TABLE
( KEY_FIELD, OPTION_DATE )
VALUES
( :LV_KEY, TO_DATE( :LV_DATE, 'YYYYMMDD' ) )
ENDEXEC.
ENDTRY.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.Hi Sau Tong Calvin,
don't you mess up INITIAL ans NULL values.
In ABAP, every data type has an initial value. As opposed to other programming languages, all variables are set to their initial value before use, numeric fields get 0, TYPE N which is numeric character will take 0 in all places, strings are empty and character fields are space. ABAP date fields are type N technically, so will be '00000000'.
You can store as this using open SQL.
NULL value means there is nothing stored for this field - this may save disk space if only few records have values stored for the field. But it will make problems in a WHERE clause of selection because SPACE matches initial values but not NULL values and opposite.
I don't know too much about native EXEC SQL because I never needed in the last decade. Hopefully you can solve the task using ABAP open SQL.

Displaying Null-date in SQL developer
Hi,
I run into the following problem (with SQL developer Vers. 1.2.0 build 2998).
On a table with a date column and a null date in some rows (the default value is "to_date(1, 'J')" ), SQL developer is showing after a query in the SQL worksheet the date "01/01/4713"
However, when I'm executing the same query in SQL*Plus, the columns with a null-date showing the value "01/01/4712"
How is it possible that SQL-Developer and SQL*Plus showing different dates on the same data?
Any suggestion or explanations for this behavior?
Any help is much appreciated.
TIA
FredThey are both getting the same internal Oracle date format.
They will use different code to translate those bytes into a visible format.
The problem is about year 0 because historically there wasn't one.
The internal date format does permit dates in the year zero, but mostly the SQL interface forbids it.
For example
select to_date('01010000','ddmmyyyy') from dual;
will fail, but
select to_date('01010001','ddmmyyyy')-1 from dual;
will pass
and
select to_char(to_date('01010001','ddmmyyyy')-5,'dd/mon/yyyy') from dual;
produces, well, garbage.
Storing 'dummy' values tends to lead to odd results which is why it is generally frowned upon. Use a null and another column to indicate why a real value isn't appropriate. -
Convert Char to Date in SQL Server

Thanks,
RaviHi,
Try with CAST() and CONVERT() functions. For more information refer use this url : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187928.aspx.
It is more easy to get solution if you can post your query.

I want to convert it to date format as 'dd/mm/yyyy'.
I have to use in select query something like if (A.field1=0, 01/01/2000, A.field1).
How can i achieve this ?to_Date(substr(date1,7,2)||'/'||substr(date1,5,2)||'/'||substr(date1,1,4),'dd/mm/yyyy')

Different LOV behavior between SQL query data model and data template
I have noticed different behavior when using parameters linked to list of values (LOV) of type menu with the multiple selection option enabled and a SQL query data model vs a data template. Here's the example because that first sentence was probably really confusing.
SQL Query:
select
plmc.MonthCode, plmc.ModalityDim, plmc.ModalityName,plmc.RegionDim
from
DataOut.dbo.PatientLabMonthlyCross plmc
where
plmc.MonthCode = 200202
and plmc.RegionDim = 1209
and 1 =
case
when coalesce(:modalityDim,null) is null
then 1
else
case
when plmc.ModalityDim in (:modalityDim)
then 1
else 0
end
end
Putting BI Publisher into debug mode, defining a data model of type SQL Query, defining a parameter called :modalityDim linked to a LOV that allows multiple selections, and selecting a couple of values from the LOV the output of the prepared statement is:
[081607_122647956][][STATEMENT] Sql Query : select
plmc.MonthCode,
plmc.ModalityDim,
plmc.ModalityName,
plmc.RegionDim
from
DataOut.dbo.PatientLabMonthlyCross plmc
where
plmc.MonthCode = 200202
and plmc.RegionDim = 1209
and 1 =
case
when coalesce(?,?,null) is null
then 1
else
case
when plmc.ModalityDim in (?,?)
then 1
else 0
end
end
[081607_122647956][][STATEMENT] 1:6
[081607_122647956][][STATEMENT] 2:7
[081607_122647956][][STATEMENT] 3:6
[081607_122647956][][STATEMENT] 4:7
[081607_122654713][][EVENT] Data Generation Completed...
[081607_122654713][][EVENT] Total Data Generation Time 7.0 seconds
Note how the bind variable :modalityDim was changed into two parameters in the prepared statement.
When I use this same SQL Query in a data template the output is:
[081607_012113018][][STATEMENT] Sql Query : select
plmc.MonthCode,
plmc.ModalityDim,
plmc.ModalityName,
plmc.RegionDim
from
DataOut.dbo.PatientLabMonthlyCross plmc
where
plmc.MonthCode = 200202
and plmc.RegionDim = 1209
and 1 =
case
when coalesce(?,null) is null
then 1
else
case
when plmc.ModalityDim in (?)
then 1
else 0
end
end
[081607_012113018][][STATEMENT] 1:'6','7'
[081607_012113018][][STATEMENT] 2:'6','7'
[081607_012113574][][EXCEPTION] java.sql.SQLException: Syntax error converting the nvarchar value ''6','7'' to a column of data type int.
Note the exception because it is trying to convert the multiple parameter values.
Am I doing something completely wrong here? I really need to use a data template because I will need to link a couple of queries together from different database vendors.
-markThis is for 10.1.3.4 - because in 11g every SQL query is automatially part of a data model.
In 10g SQL query is for simple unrelated SQL queries.
If you need to use advance features such as:
a) multiple SQL queries that are joined in master-detail relation ships
b) before/after report triggers
Then you will need to use the data template, which is an XML description
of the queries, links, and PL/SQL calls.
hope that helps,

Converting varchar2 to date format
I've converted date formats many times, but for some reason I'm getting an invalid number error when trying to convert a varchar2 column. I've tried the to_char and to_date function and I get the same result. The column is a date and it is formatted as DD-MON-YYYY, but I want to change it to MM/DD/YYYY. My query is below:

The column is a date and it is formatted as DD-MON-YYYY,If the column is a DATE, then it has the same format that all DATEs have, which is nothing like 'DD-MON-YYYY'. Formats like that only apply to strings.
Conversely, if it is formatted as 'DD-MON-YYY', then it is a string, not a DATE.
but I want to change it to MM/DD/YYYY. My query is below:
select to_date('fccpdate','MM/DD/YYYY')
from cc_class_scmast_vTO_DATE (x, 'MM/DD/YYYY') tries to convert the string x into a DATE. Let's say it starts by taking the first 2 characters of x, to get the month. The first 2 charcters of 'fccpdate' are 'fc', which is not a valid number (at least not in base 10), let alone a number between 1 and 12, so TO_DATE raises an error.
When I try to_date I get this:
Error starting at line 1 in command:
select TO_DATE('fccpdate', 'DD-MON-YYYY') from cc_class_scmast_v where fccpdate IS NOT NULL
Error report:

I've tried removing the single quotes from my column and that doesn't make a difference. Any help is appreciated.That's a good first step. Literals are enclosed in single-quotes, identifiers (including column names) are not. 'fccpdate' is the literal 8-character string containing 'f', 'c;, another 'c', 'p', 'd', 'a', 't' and 'e'. fccpdate (without single-quotes) can be the name of a column.
If fccpdate is a string, such as '18-JUL-2012', then you can convert it to a DATE using TO_DATE.
TO_DATE (fccpdate, 'DD-MON-YYYY')If you want to display a DATE in a particular format, use
TO_CHAR ( d
, f
)where d is a DATE, and f is the format string. In this case, d might be the TO_DATE expression above
TO_CHAR ( TO_DATE (fccpdate, 'DD-MON-YYYY')
, 'MM/DD/YYYY'
I hope this answers your question.
If not, post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) for all tables involved, and also post the results you want from that data.
Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
Always say which version of Oracle you're using.

Convert Database NULL Values to default
Hi Friends,
I have two doubts. Any help on this is appreciated -
1. Convert Database NULL Values to default / Convert Other NULL values to default ( from File Menu - Report Option ), can any one please tell that Default Values are the values from respective Database or Crystal Reports itself?
2. Can anybody please provide the site - link, document covering details of Crystal Reports performance optimization?
Thanks in advance !!
Regards,
Ashish BHi Ashish,
Here are the few tips to enhance the performance of Crystal Reports.
1. While you are using subreports, always try to use on demand subreport when appropriate.
2. If you are creating linked subreports, try to base the link on an indexed field in the subreport.
3. If you are linking subreports with formula fields, try to keep the formula field in the main report and use a database field in the subreport.
4. Try to create proper indexed field in database, so that the data access will be faster.
5. Donu2019t use multiple data sources in reports. CRYSTAL REPORTS allows this situation, but it degrades performance.
6. Try to create SQL expression fields. Since they are evaluated in database server side, so the performance can be enhanced.
7. Always use server side processing or server side grouping. To do so, choose Database | Perform Grouping On Server from the pull down menu.
8. Donu2019t use Crystal Reports formula languageu2019s built-in functions, such as ToText, in your selection criteria.
9. Donu2019t base record selection on formula fields.
There are a number of factors that affect the processing speed of reports in Crystal Reports. For more information, search for the document u2018Tips to Improving Report Processing Speedu2019 which may improve your reportu2019s performance.
Hope it helps!!

Hi all,
I realize that this may be a little bit out of the scope of this forum, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
I'm trying to figure out how to select a date in the format mm/dd/yyyy from a SQL Server date/time field. I've browsed the internet on this but haven't found any quick/easy way to do this. Can anyone please help me out here?
Thanks!
-Stephen Spalding
Web Developer
GraybarHi Stephen,
You can use the convert function in sql to change the format of the date time field.
select convert(varchar(13),getdate(),101) gives u the current date in mm/dd/yyyy format.
If you want that in java you can use the SimpleDateFormat class to change the format.
import java.text.Format;
import java.text.SimpleDateFormat;
import java.util.Date;
Date currentDate = null;
Format formatter = null;
String date = "";
currentDate = new Date();
formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("MM/dd/yyyy");
date = formatter.format(currentDate);
This should give in the mm/dd/yyyy format.
But both the results will be in String Format and not datetime.
Hope this will be useful to you.

Error converting SQL Server DDL and views to Oracle
I am trying to convert SQL Serve 2008 on windows to Oracle 11g using SQL Developer 3.2.20.09. I am using the jtds-1.2.7 drivers to connect to SQL Server.
I have made several attempts to run the conversion and am getting the tables, indexes, and triggers converted with no issue. However, my Procedures and views are not coming across. All of them are giving similar errors as:
"Failed To Convert Stored Procedure get_compvision > esp3.dbo.get_compvision:unexpected end of subtree: Line 0 Column 0"
When I log into the source SQL Server environment using SQL Developer, I get an empty SQL Editor window with "null" when I try to {right-click -> "Open"} on the Procedure.
Logging into SQL Server Administrator as the same user I can see the source code, so the issue appears to be related to SQL Developer and not my user privleges. I am a dbo alias in SQL Server.
In addition, if I click on a view, I can see the data and metadata, but not the SQL that defines the view. I see tabs for column, data, triggers, and details.
In addition, if I go to the "capture" for my Migration project and drill down to procedures, I can see them listed, but each and every procedure gives me a "/* DDL not accesible */" error. I get teh same results for views, triggers and indexes.
Can someone help me? I have been googling for days!

How do I check for null date entires using custom JScript on a SharePoint NewForm.aspx?
Hi,
I have the below JScript:
/*Function to convert the US Date format to UK date format */
function parseDate(input) {
var parts = input.split('/');
// new Date(year, month [, date [, hours[, minutes[, seconds[, ms]]]]])
return new Date(parts[2], parts[1]-1, parts[0]); // months are 0-based
/*Function to check if end date is before the start date */
function checkDates(){
var sd = parseDate($("input[title='From']").val());
var ed = parseDate($("input[title='Until']").val());
if(sd > ed) {
alert("Please check From and Until Date");
$("input[value$='Save']").attr('disabled', true); //hide save button
else
$("input[value$='Save']").attr('disabled', false); //show save button
The above works fine for checking sd > ed but I can't seem to check for null's, I have attempted the below which doesn't work:
/*Function to convert the US Date format to UK date format */
function parseDate(input) {
var parts = input.split('/');
// new Date(year, month [, date [, hours[, minutes[, seconds[, ms]]]]])
return new Date(parts[2], parts[1]-1, parts[0]); // months are 0-based
/*Function to check if end date is before the start date */
function checkDates(){
var sd = parseDate($("input[title='From']").val());
var ed = parseDate($("input[title='Until']").val());
if( (sd > ed) || (sd == null) || (ed == Null) ) {
alert("Please check From and Until Date");
$("input[value$='Save']").attr('disabled', true); //hide save button
else
$("input[value$='Save']").attr('disabled', false); //show save button
