Assigning place to photo causes iphoto '11 to bomb

I have just upgraded to iphoto '11. No problems installing. Upgrade library. No problems. Then downloaded and installed update. Strange why the guy in the apple store didn't even mention that an update had been released. No problem... untill I tried to assign a place to my photos. The assign places search function insists that i have pressed each key twice, e.g. Brighton becomes 'BB' backspace 'Brr'. The rolling beachball churns until I have to force quit. Have reset keystroke repeat to minimum. No effect.
There seem to be a number of bugs creeping into previous faultless apple software releases, i think they need to improve their quality control.

What updater did you run on iPhoto?  The double letter bug was fixed with the iPhoto 9.1.1 update I believe.  Go to the Apple Downloads page and download The iPhoto 9.1 and 9.11 updaters.  Apply both of them in order. Then try the Location entry again.
If you still freeze up launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new library.  Import a couple of photos into the new library and try assigning a place again.  It it works as intended then your current library is damaged.
If that's the case try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
  Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

How to assign places to photos in iPod touch 4G??

    Thanks!

  • Accessing slideshows (which had missing photos) causes iphoto crash

I have rebuilt the entire library and tried CTRL click and delete. I still can't click or delete about 6 slideshows...any action on or access to these causes iphoto to crash.
I lost photo's about 4 months ago.....found them again...but the slideshows still cause crashes.
    Any advice out there?

    Hi rsgaither.
I gather you imported the photos back in but the data for the slideshows is not reflecting what you have now.
If the rebuild doesn't help then try creating a new library, which will also create new data files. (In essence you are starting all over)
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Mass Deletion of Photos Causes iPhoto '09 to Crash

I have about 75,000 pictures. Yeah, waiting on Faces was fun...
Anyway, I decided to break up my library into two libraries.
When I try to delete about 35,000 photos out of the duplicated library, iPhoto works REALLY hard for about an hour, then the processors (iStat menu) just show idle activity. iPhoto stays exactly as it was, but is neither using the processors or HD.
I force quit and then reopen it. The photos are still in the Trash. Nothing seems to have been done.
I've rebuilt everything on iPhoto startup (except the nice 'From Backup' option).
I've been dwindling it down to see what amount of photos doesn't cause iPhoto to anuerize (yes, I made it verb). So far, deleting 5,544 will still cause the freeze.
Any suggestions other than deleting 100 at a time or keeping it all in one library? It should have taken 15 minutes at the most to get both libraries up and running, not a day-and-counting!
    Anyway, thanks in advance.

Note that I said "when IPLM is updated to '09"
it currently has some functionality with '09 but can not move photos - from the IPLM update page
    iPhoto ‘09 initial compatibility report
Posted on January 27, 2009 by Brian Webster
Well, I’ve had a chance to try out iPhoto ‘09 for a couple hours now, and here are the notes I have so far regarding compatibility with iPhoto Library Manager:
Viewing and switching between existing libraries works fine. iPhoto will prompt you to upgrade your library to the new version when you first open a particular library. Note that after you upgrade a library, you will no longer be able to open it in earlier versions of iPhoto.
New libraries created using the current version of iPhoto Library Manager won’t work the first time you open them in iPhoto. For now, hold down the option key while opening iPhoto and use its interface to create a new library if you need to create one. You can then use the “Add Library” button in iPhoto Library Manager to add the library to iPLM’s library list, after which you can use the library normally. This will be fixed in the upcoming iPLM update.
As expected, advanced functions such as copying albums between libraries and merging do not work and will produce an error message. Rebuilding a library will also not work, although the “Extract Photos” function should still work OK. Trying to use these features won’t result in any harm, they just won’t work. Again, these issues will be fixed in the upcoming iPLM update.
iPod Folders appear to work with no problems with iPhoto ‘09
So, that’s what I have for now, I’ll be continuing to test things out and will post any updates on this page. I’ll then be starting work on updating iPLM to fix any of the issues that come up with iPhoto ‘09. That will be a free update for all users, so if you have purchased or plan on purchasing a copy of iPLM, you will be able to update for free when it is available.

I am having problems adding place location to photos. Using iphoto11. I click on "assign a place" and the google map comes up but no way to create or select a new place for this photo. I could do it fine in iphoto 09.

  • Deleting photos off iphoto causing it to crash

When i try and delete a photo on iphoto, it crashes the application, causing me to force quit. My trash is allready empty so that shouldnt be an issue. Any ideas or help? thanks

It suggests that there is corruption in the main Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto "Assign Place" map is blank - I used to see Google Map, now nothing, why?

I have used "Assign Place" for years and have numerous places identifying where photos have been taken. Today, when I tried to "assign a place" , iPhoto accepted the info, but the map window remained blank (terrain, satellite & hybrid…no difference- just a gray screen.  I ollked at older photos that had an assigned place- same thing gray, blank screen in "assign place".  Why?

What version of iPhoto and system are you running?  If not what's showing in your profile update your profile.

    Select a pic
Click on the i button lower right, and this will open the Info Pane
Note Lower Right it says 'Assign a Place' and type the name of the town/city
iPhoto will search for that location and put a pin there on a map.
Drag the pin to the exact location.

  • How do I place a photo in Illustrator from my iPhoto Library?

I am a graphic designer and I use Illustrator and Photoshop a lot. I don't use iPhoto for most of my photo editing but rather for the organizing it does with my photos in regard to me viewing them.
Since updating to iPhoto 08 the other day I am unable to get into my photos folder and place a photo in Illustrator or open a photo from Photoshop. (I have now figured out how to use Photoshop to edit...so that is not my real issue) Because of this new design to keep people out of the folder so they don't corrupt them, it also seems to keep me out from even placing a photo.
Other than physically making a copy of it and placing it into another folder how can I access these photos? I have tried dragging and dropping the photo from iPhoto to my Illustrator page, I get this message +"QuickTime™ and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture."+
I can do a work around for Photoshop but what about Illustrator? Why can I not just place my photo?
I am sorry if this question is redundant to others being asked in regards to the "no easy access" to the main iPhoto Library but I didn't see any questions specifically asking about Illustrator.
    Thanks.

    Two things
1- When you go to Leopard the access is very easy and more direct
2 - for me I love the fact that I do NOT have to worry about having the latest version of the photo like I used to - now I export the photo (at worst - under Leopard I normally directly access the latest version) and know that it is the current version rather than looking at the original folder and the modified folder trying to remember the photo name (which makes exporting, using and deleting my preferred work flow under Tiger)

I hope your book will be great. Once you finish the book, make a preview and check it carefully, before uploading the book to Apple.
Keep the preview for your records, until you receive the printed copy.
