Associating my CompactRIO to a computer/device name on the network

Hello,
I have a network connecting a router, several computers and a CompactRIO, configured to use DHCP. Therefore the CompactRIO IP address may change. On the computers I will be using a program that I didn't write, that communicates with the CompactRIO (I wrote the CompactRIO side of the code myself). The program can find the CompactRIO either using an IP address, or a computer name, because it's been designed to work from computer to computer. Unfortunately, since I'm using DHCP I cannot set it to use a fixed address.
Therefore, I would like to install a driver, or run a piece of software, or configure my CompactRIO such that it appears as a computer or device wih a name on the network. A name visible in "Network Places" under Windows for instance.
I should mention that installing a DNS server might work, but is really a last resort option for me.
Any suggestion?

Hello Proengin,
First of all don't hesitate next time to post your message on Real-Time Measurement and Control . It will be maybe easier to get an answer.
However, as I understand you're obtaining your cRIO IP address from a DHCP server automatically. Therefore, it's normal that the address isn't fixed. Indeed, each time you'll boot your target, the server will alllocate an IP adress that might be different than the adress previously assigned.
Concerning the second part, you won't be able to make your cRIO appearing as a computer or a device on the network because it's a real-time target and not a Windows device for example.
With real-time targets such as cRIO (or sbRIO, PXI RT,...) you'll be able to check them in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) from "Remote systems" tab.
Hope this information will help !

I understand that the media and ftp server functionality uses/needs some sort of name to broadcast
But what purpose does having the router broadcast its device name on the network?
I would imagine it might be for the printer service
In any case I am not using any of those services,
and I am unble to hide the routers from the network
I would prefer them to not show up in a browse list
The funny thing is, I some how managed to hide them,
not sure how, but after a reboot it reverted back to broadcasting the device name on the network
If I am not using any of the routers services for media, ftp, printing
how can I stop it from showing up on the network?

As time passes, we get see more examples of how Cisco / Linksys is repeatedly forcing things upon us
    There are many great examples

  • Where is the network - workspace - device management's log? what is the name of the network - workspace - device's service?

    Hi guys!
I want to know where can I set up the network -> workspace -> device management's log and get the log and what is the name of the network -> workspace -> device's service? Thank you for your answers.

Forget hotel technical support. All they'll do is refer you to a toll free number to the other side of the globe where somebody will tell you to click a Start button, or something. It's an utter waste of time.
What you describe is a "captive network" and yes, the need to authenticate each and every time you shut down your Mac or let it sleep is a common annoyance. The IT idiots that sold the Internet package to the hotel chain is long gone. Complain to whomever you can find, and perhaps one day they'll address their own incompetence. Until then keep your Mac connected, don't shut it down or let it sleep. Even then you may find yourself logged out from time to time, which you might not even become aware of until web pages stop loading. You can do nothing to fix it, other than to refuse to frequent that hotel chain. Be sure to tell them why.

That's not good! What happens when you attempt to make the connection? Do you receive an error message? What device is the computer making a connection to? Send details please.

  • Airplay Connection issues - An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "x". The network connection failed.

I recently upgraded to a new MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, and got my Airport Express (802.11g) out of the closet and set up an AirPlay network for my speakers.
All worked well for the first while, but recently I've been having an inconsistent problem with this: "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “my network name”. The network connection failed."
Since it came up, more often than not, I can't connect.
I can play without issue from my iPhone, and from my iPad.
I looked around these forums, and found a couple threads dealing with this from 2011, with no clear resolution to them.  No one with Mountain Lion seems to complain about it, though a few people mused about whether Mountain Lion might fix the problem.
I'm running iTunes 10.7(21), and don't recall doing any upgrades to it that might have brought this about, though I can't say for sure.
My Airport Express is updated to firmware version 6.3, which I believe is the last one issued for the 'g' Airport Express.
My wireless network runs off an Airport Extreme 802.11n (Second Generation) with verion 7.6.1 firmware.
My Mac has 10.8.2 on it right now.
Hopefully some of that info might help sort this out - any replies greatly appreciated!

One quick update.  A workaround that was mentioned in one post did seem to work - if music is started via the Remote app it seems to connect fine.
And I'm not sure if I dare upgrade to iTunes 11 given the firestorm of bad impressions I see, including some that relate to Airplay functions...

  • Can anyone tell me how to change the names of the networks I have set up on Airport Express

Can anyone tell me how to change the names of the networks I have set up on Airport Express please? I now work in a UN compound and my network is my own name, would prefer some anonymity so seeking to change the wifi network name that others might see.

    Hi mkl1961,
Happy Holidays!  The article below will explain how to reset your Airport Express and change the network and base station names back to their defaults.
Resetting an AirPort base station FAQ - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT3728
What default settings will my AirPort base station have after a hard or factory default reset?
AirPort base stations are set to request an IP address by DHCP.
AirPort base station passwords are "public."
AirPort base station names revert to "base station xxxxxx," where xxxxxx is the last six digits of the wireless MAC address*.
AirPort base station network names are "Apple Network xxxxxx," where xxxxxx is the last six digits of the wireless MAC address*.
*A MAC (Media Access Control) address, also known as a "network ID," is a unique hardware identification number for a network port.  You can find the wireless and Ethernet network IDs on the printed label on the bottom or side of the device.

  • Duplicate Name on the network

Hi, we recently set up BT Broadband in our new home.  (Previously with Sky).
When I ran the BT installation disk, it said it couldn't see my wireless (very odd), so wouldn't install.  Anyway, so I set up the connection manally and made sure Sky connection info was removed.
It all connects and works fine.  (Also have Xbox, blu-ray, wii, iphones etc all connecting to BT hub no problems at all).
However, now when I boot up the laptop it pops up with a warning triangle saying that there is a duplicate name on the network.  Doesn't appear to cause any issues, but it is a bit concerning.  And hasn't appeared in our previous home when we were on Sky.
Any ideas on how to resolve this?
    Thank you

try running the ip scanners I pointed you to, not sure how it will react is there is an IP conflict since I don't ever have any but it should show you everything on your network.
if when you run it it does not show any issues or duplicated then have a look and see if everything you have on the network is actually showing. If not then check the web admin pages (if they have one) for each device not showing and make sure that their network address is not the same as one that is showing.
At worst you could also try switching everything but router and laptop off totally and then seeing if the message on the laptop goes away

Are you using DHCP to allocate IP addresses via your router or Static IP allocation?
You may have an IP conflict in your network.
Check on your various network configuration parameters in your iPad, PC and WiFi router.

When Disk Utility opens, select your Mac's startup volume from the list of devices. If you never changed its name, the startup volume will be listed as Macintosh HD. Be sure to select the volume name and not the device name, which will usually be the name of the physical drive, for instance, "500 GB WDC WD5."
I think I may have selected the device name. Is this the cause of my problem?
Can I fix this ? Please help?
I live in Auckland in New Zealand, I don't have any apple stores here

Ok, I realized that won't work, I don't think, because you can't enable it on your Mac.
However, if you have another Mac, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode to install. Boot your Mac while holding down the T key. You will see a FireWire symbol on the screen. Then, connect the two with a Firewire cable. Your Mac hard drive will show up on the other. Try to install onto that.
This may not work, depending on the other Mac. If it is similar to yours, it should.
I'm not sure if you can do it the other way. If you put the DVD into the other Mac and boot it into Target Disk Mode, then boot yours holding down the option key, you may be able to select the DVD on the other Mac as the startup.
This very old article seems to indicate it will work: http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0914.html

  • Unable to print to Canon iR-Adv C5045 from MacBook Pro that is connected to Windows computer and shared on the network

I am unable to print to a Canon iR-Adv C5045 from a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.4) that is connected to Windows NT computer and shared on the company network.  I am connected to the network by ethernet.
I was able to add the printer manually by going to Advanced, Windows printer via spoolss, smb://computer name/printer name and used the Canon iR-ADV C5045/5051 driver.
When I print it appears to be printing but nothing comes out.  I checked the completed jobs from the Print Queue and the job is listed.  Checked the print log on the printer and it isn't listed.  Is there a different driver I should be using for this configuration?

You may not have a choice as to what driver you can use. If the ADV C5045 only has the default UFR2 printer kit, then you will have to use the UFR2 driver - which is what you are using now. If you can access the copier, press the Counter Check button on the control panel. Then on the display you will see an entry labelled Check Device Configuration. Select this and scroll down through the pages. You are looking for an entry called PS. If you see it then the Canon does have the optional Postscript printer kit enabled and this will let you use an alternate driver. One suggestion would be to create the printer again using the same setting that you have done already but this time select the Generic Postscript driver included with the OS rather than use the Canon driver. This will help to determine if the driver is the cause.
If there is no PS option you will have to use the UFR2 driver and this could be the problem, as the Canon drivers don't always work well on a Mac via a Windows share. As a test, are you able to create a print queue directly to the Canon rather than via the Windows share? If you can, then this will let you check if the driver currently installed will work, as there can be settings on the copier that can block/stop you from printing. Assuming that you can print to the Canon with a direct connection from the Mac, then we can work on getting the printing via the shared queue. But if it doesn't print directly from the Mac, then it confirms that it may not be the server and more to do with the copier.

  • What is the name of the network?

I'm connected to a router via eathernet and I want to find out the name of the wireless connection from that router. How can I do this?

    Hi,
A Broadband router is a sort of given.
Cable or DLS Modem would be useful to know, Make and model of modem and/or router would be better.
This is the Set up page of my Wifi able Routing modem
This is the drop down for the Airport card in the Menu Bar showing the WiFi Networks my Card can "See".
Of course the Card has to be On
Using the First pic you must of course then match any Encryption you should be using to gain access to the WiFi network you want to access.
You can see by the second pic that Snow Leopard tell you which ones have Encryption active.
Now you say that no device can "see" the Name that you expect.
You will see in the first pic that my Modem is active as a WiFi Access Point and you imply that your is as well. (the tick boxes)
From the sound of things the device you are using is not either Broadcasting it's SSID or it is not working on the WiFi front.
