ASYNC IO when using RMAN

Hi,
I'm seeing async disk io event while doing rman operation (backup, validate backupset) and the rman session is waiting long on this event.
any suggestions / inputs on this.
Thx,
-KarthicK

If SEQ# in V$SESSION or V$SESSION_WAIT was changing, then it was a new occurrence of a wait each time.
You have to look at STATE and WAIT_TIME as well. If STATE is WAITING , then SECONDS_IN_WAIT is the current wait. If STATE is anything else, then WAIT_TIME is the the previous wait.

• Async problem when using FlexUnit4

Hi all,
I have a problem I could use a little help with. I'm trying to change a test to FlexUnit4 (first used FlexUnit 0.9), but when using the Async class I get a "Timeout Occurred before expected event" (from the ExpectAsync.handleAsyncTimeOut function (line 315)).
The function looks like this:
[Test(async)]
public function GetApplicationMenuTest():void
var event:GetApplicationMenuEvent=new GetApplicationMenuEvent(this.loader, applicationId);
var asyncHandler:Function=Async.asyncHandler(this, resultHandler, 500);
this.loader.fireEvent(event, asyncHandler);
The loader.fireEvent(event:MVCEvent, callback:Function) method is a function that will set a busy indicator on the screen and that fires the event. When the event is fired a server call is eventually made, and we wait for a responds. When the responds is received the retrieved data is processed until finally the function this.event.loader.receiveData(resultObject) is called. Where the loader is the same as the function above and the resultObject is the processed responds data.
This receivedata function removes the busy indicator from the screen and calls the the callback:Function as can be seen from the super class of the loader:
public function receiveData(data:Object):void
this.callBackFunction(data);
The callBackFunction is the following function in our test:
private function resultHandler(data:EibDataObject):void
Assert.assertTrue("The session is not ok", data.sessionOK);
Assert.assertTrue("Fault messages have been retrieved", data.messages.length <= 0);
Using this setup described above I get a "Timeout Occurred before expected event". I never had a problem using the FlexUnit 0.9 setup that looked as follows:
public function GetApplicationMenuTest():void
var applicationId:String = "";
var event:GetApplicationMenuEvent = new GetApplicationMenuEvent(this.loader, applicationId);
this.loader.fireEvent(event, addAsync(resultHandler, Model.TIMEOUT));
So the only difference in the test is the callback:Function that is set.
I checked out the code of FlexUnit4 (http://opensource.adobe.com/svn/opensource/flexunit/branches/4.x/FlexUnit4) to debug the problem and I found that the method AsyncHandler.handleEvent(event:Event) would not be entered. When I changed this method to AsyncHandler.handleEvent(data:Object) I saw that the argument passed to this function was not an event but the resultObject described above.
This is offcourse pretty logical because AsyncHandler.handleEvent is the method that is returned as the Function from Async.asyncHandler(...).
What do I need to do to change
public function GetApplicationMenuTest():void
var applicationId:String = "";
var event:GetApplicationMenuEvent = new GetApplicationMenuEvent(this.loader, applicationId);
this.loader.fireEvent(event, addAsync(resultHandler, Model.TIMEOUT));
to FlexUnit 4 in the scenario described above? Hope you guys can help
Greetz,
Rick
Also I have a small question, what is the 'timeout=xxx' statement for in the [Test] metadata when you also provide a timeout to the async method?

A few things for you:
1) The opensource.adobe.com address is always lagging behind. Our active website is www.flexunit.org and our active code development is at github. We just update the adobe site with major release versions.
2) The timeout in the Test metadata: We support multiple simultaneous outstanding events in FlexUnit 4. In other words, you can say, you expect a given object to broadcast event1, followed by event2, followed by event3. The timeout in the Test is an overall timeout for all of the steps, so each is given their own timeout, but in total they should not exceed the number assigned in the Test metadata
3) As you noted the async methods are expecting to handle an event and you are using them with a callback, which is the root of the problem. I clearly missed the fact that the .9 version would allow this use case, so, if you would, I would appreciate if you could file an enhancement request in our project at bugs.adobe.com and I can work on getting this resolved for the next version.
In the meantime, you could use the responder functionality, which seems like it would work fine, albeit not as elegant as I would like. I can't test this out at my current location, but wanted to get you an answer asap, so post back with issues.
[Test(async)]
public function GetApplicationMenuTest():void
var event:GetApplicationMenuEvent=new GetApplicationMenuEvent(this.loader, applicationId);
var responder:Responder = new mx.rpc.Responder( resultHandler, null );
var asyncResponder:IResponder=Async.asyncResponder(this, responder, 500);
this.loader.fireEvent(event, asyncResponder.result );

• R12 Rapidclone when using RMAN

Per note# 406982.1, the cloning steps are:
1. On the target server: run perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack
2. Create the target database control files manually using RMAN
3. Start the target database in open mode
etc..
Step 1 --- is the before I refresh the database from source...?

RMAN duplicate open the database.
..then what?
..run adcfgclone.pl ..
...sorry the note on Rapidclone is not clear ..It is clear :)
1) Run "perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack" command
2) Duplicate the database using RMAN

You can give even
SQL> alter system checkpoint;and do you have any idea at what point you want to recover your database? Even though they are in ACTIVE stauts, when you are taking backup. Still you can apply them how much you want. There will be no lost data. But ensure you haven't opened[resetologs] database.

AshishAshish,
Is it "symantec's netbackup"? I do not know that product and if it has an option to enter your own RMAN scripts. On the other hand, it should be able to create irman scripts according to your backup job definition.

• When to delete archive logs- using rman 10.1.0.5

Hello,
I am using rman to backup my database(10.1.0.5) along with backing up the archivelogs delete input. The retention of the backup is set to 1. I am backing the datafiles and archivelogs to disk /backupdata. I noticed that the /backupdata is filling up with a lot of backup archivelogs. Since the retention of the database is set to 1, does that mean that rman will also clean the archivelogs in /backupdata too? What I am asking is, since the retention is set to 1, does rman automatically determine witch archivelogs in the /backupdata to delete if rman determines that the archivelogs is not needed to satisfied the retention 1 condition??? Thank you in advance.

rman won't automatically purge your backups. Retention policy can be defined to be 1 (what?) redundancy copies or recovery window?
You may have defined, let's say 1 redundant copy, which means you must have at least one backup to consider the other obsolete, and you will keep one redundant copy. The other backups are not automatically deleted, they are just marked obsolete, and you can delete them.
I suggest you to manually purge your backups, as they will fill up your storage. issue, from a recovery manager session:
rman> report obsolete;
rman > delete noprompt obsolete;
rman> report obsolete;
The delete noprompt obsolete will physically purge all backups reported as obsolete by the first command. You can confirm actions from the last command.
I suggest you to perform a periodic task to purge obsolete backups, schedule last command, it can be done once your regular backup ends.
If you have Enterprise manager DB Control console enabled, it can be scheduled using the internal scheduler, and it can be monitored from within EM.

Pl do not post duplicates - Issue in configuring Standby Database from Active database in 11g by RMAN

• Problem While Creating Physical Standby Using RMAN

Hi Guru's
May be this incidence you all face while creating physical standby DB. I try to create Physical standby database Using RMAN Duplicate Command from one server
(pri machine) to Standby Machine.
The steps i followed to create the above are as follows:
Step 1:- Enable Forced Logging
SQL> ALTER DATABASE FORCE LOGGING;
Step 2:- Configure a Standby Redo Log
SQL> ALTER DATABASE ADD STANDBY LOGFILE GROUP 10
2> ('/oracle/dbs/log1c.rdo','/oracle/dbs/log2c.rdo') SIZE 500M;
Step 3:- Set Primary Database Initialization Parameters
SQL> create pfile='?/dbs/pfileorcl.ora' from spfile;
Edit the pfile to add the standby parameters, here shown:
db_unique_name='orcl'
LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG='DG_CONFIG=(orcl,orcldr)'
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2='SERVICE=orcldr LGWR ASYNC VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=orcldr'
*.fal_server=orcldr
*.fal_client=orcl
*.standby_file_management=auto
Step 4:- Enable Archiving
SQL> SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
SQL> STARTUP MOUNT;
SQL> ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG;
SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
Step 5:- Setup tnsnames for standby database
This should be done on primary database by altering tnsnames.ora or using NetCA command, and create it by the name orcldr
orcldr =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = standby-svr)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = orcldr)
Step 6:- Backup database and copy it to standby
This backup script should be run on primary and copied to standby on the same mount point, running this scripts using RMAN, all files under /rman_backup should be copied to /rman_backup on standby server.
$rman target /
RMAN> run
allocate channel c1 type disk;
allocate channel c2 type disk;
backup database format '/rman_backup/%U';
backup archivelog all format '/rman_backup /%U';
backup current controlfile for standby format '/rman_backup/%U';
Step 7:- Standby Database Steps
Installing Oracle Software
This should be same release and patchset with exactly same ORACLE_HOME mount point.
Setting Up listener
Create and start a listener on standby database using NetCA, or creating listener.ora in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = standby-svr)(PORT = 1521))
Step 8:- Set Standby Database Initialization Parameters
Copying the pfile created in primary database and renames it to initorcldr.ora, and changes these parameters:
db_unique_name='orcldr'
LOG_ARCHIVE_CONFIG='DG_CONFIG=(orcldr,orcl)'
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2='SERVICE=orcl LGWR ASYNC VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=orcl'
*.fal_server=orcl
*.fal_client=orcldr
*.LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_STATE_2='ENABLE'
Step 9:- Setup tnsnames for primary database
This should be done on standby database by altering tnsnames.ora or using NetCA command, and create it by the name orcl
orcl =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = primary-svr)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
Step 10:- Copy a Password File
A password file must be created on the Primary and copied over to the Standby site. The sys password must be identical on both sites. Copy orapworcl to $ORACLE_HOME/dbs and rename file to orapworcldr
Step 11:- Create mount points for Oracle
Mount point should be created on standby server with the same convention used in primary, this includes the location for controlfiles, redo logs, datafiles, archive log destination and alert logs.
$ mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/oradata/orcl/
$ mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area/
$ mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/admin/orcl/adump
$ mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/admin/orcl/bdump
$ mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/admin/orcl/cdump
$ mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/admin/orcl/udump
Step 12:- Use RMAN to restore backup and setup standby
Connect to RMAN and execute the following command to create standby database, this should be performed on standby server after copying backup and setting tnsnames.
$ export ORACLE_SID=orcldr
$ rman target sys/tiger@orcl auxiliary sys/tiger@orcldr
RMAN> duplicate target database for standby dorecover;
Here i am getting problem as :
While trying to connect to traget database and auxiliary database i notice that when RMAN is connect to both databases it shows
orcl ( DBID xyz)
orcl (not mounted)
Here in my view the second database must be standby database name or auxiiary db name is standby db name which in my case is orcldr
after this issue i am facing the second issues as :
in command
duplicate target database for standby dorecover;
After modifying the command to
RMAN> duplicate target database to "standby";
rman-05520 database name mismatch
Can u please let me know where i am mistaking

ok for pri:
db_name=orcl
db_unique_name=orcl
for standby:
db_name=orcl
db_unique_name=sbyorcl ( i change orcldr to sbyorcl later)for new testing
but now what i am getting on

• Issue Creating Duplicate Database on Different host using RMAN Backup

HI friends..
I m trying to create a duplicate db on different host ....... 27
i have live production db on ............. 15
its up 24*7.
i know how to create dup db using cold backup..but dont know how to create it using RMAN Backup..
I have googled..but getting issues..
Steps Taken till now
Note- I dont have catalog created on live db..
I already have set the tnsnames.ora on both servers
1) Took full backup plus archivelog plus control file on 15
2) moved it to another host..ie 27
3) now on live db..
I conected to rman target /
so i m now connected to prod db
than i try to conect to rman auxiliary sys/sys@dubpd..
But it gives me insufficient privilages error..
Can you tell me what to do next..Coz unless i get into mount phase on sever 27( new server)..i cannot use the control file from backup).my dupdb is up in nomount phase..but what enxt i can do..to restore the control file and than restore the backup after cataloging them to right path..
Thanks in advance frieds...

Nope ..on live db..
@comand prompt when i type sqlplus sys/sys@dupdb..
its says 0ra-12518...Listener cannot hand off client connection..
My tns name for live server is..*primary* on live server .. whose ip is 15..(lIVE SERVER).
i also have another entery with tns names- standby .on live server .. whose ip is 27..(other server for duplicated db).
now @command prompt..@live server.. i did sqlplus sys/sys@standby
It gives me ORA-12518
Am i missing something..1- It could be a network problem. You may enable tracing on listener (and examine the logs).
2- Add "DIRECT_HANDOFF_TTC_LISTENER=OFF" to listener.ora, then reload the listener
3- You may want to increase "large_pool_size"

• Creation of Logical Standby Database Using RMAN ACTIVE DATABASE COMMAND

Hi All,
I am in confusion how to create logical standby database from primary database using rman active database command.
What i did:-
Create primary database on machine 1 on RHEL 5 with Oracle 11gR2
Create standby database on machine 2 on RHEL 5 With Oracle 11gR2 from primary using RMAN active database command
Trying to create logical standby database on machine 3 on RHEL 5 with Oracle 11gR2 using RMAN active database command from primary.
The point which confuse me is to start the logical standby in nomount mode on machine 3 with which pfile like i create the pfile for standby database do i need to create the pfile for logical standby db.
I done the creation of logical standby database by converting physical standby to logical standby database
I am following the below mentioned doc for the same:
Creating a physical and a logical standby database in a DR environment | Chen Guang's Blog
Kindly guide me how to work over the same or please provide me the steps of the same.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply
I already started the logical standby database with pfile in nomount mode. And successfully completed the duplication of database. by mentioning the DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT parameter.
But i am not able to receive the logs on the above mentioned blog i run the sql command to check the logs but getting "no rows selected"

1. Why did recovery failed 2nd time, but not 1st time and why is RMAN looking for online redo log group_1.257.807150859 in 2nd recovery ?
3. I tried restoring control file from AutoBackup, in that case both 1st and 2nd recovery succeeded.
However for this to work, I always need to keep the AutoBackup feature enabled.
How reliable is control file AutoBackup ? Is there any alternative to using AutoBackup, can I restore control file from snapshot backup only ?
4. If I restore control file from AutoBackup, then from what point of time/SCN does RMAN restores the control file ?
Please help me out in this issue.
Thanks.

Hello experts,
I'm little newbie to RMAN recovery. Please help me in these doubts:
1. If I have datafiles, archive logs & control files backup, but current online REDO logs are lost, then can I perform incomplete database recovery ?yes, if you have backups of everything else
2. Till what maximum time/scn can incomplete database recovery be performed ??Assuming the only thing lost is the redo logs, you can recover to the last scn in the last archivelog.
3. What is role of online REDO logs in incomplete database recovery ? They provide the final redo changes - the ones that have not been written to archivelogs
Are they required for incomplete recovery ?It depends on how much incomplete recovery you need to do.
Think of all of your changes as a constant stream of redo information. As a redolog fills, it is copied to archive, then (eventually) reused. over time, your redo stream is in archivelog_1, continuing into archvivelog_2, then to 3, and eventually, when you get to the last archivelog, into the online redo. A recovery will start with the oldest necessary point in the redo stream and continue forward. Whether or not you need the online redo for a PIT recovery depends on how far forward you need to recover.
But you should take every precaution to prevent loss of online redo logs .. starting with having multiple members in each redo group ... and keeping those multiple members on physically separate disks.

• Status in SXMB_MONI when using BPM?

I've dona a BPM that sends a mail whne a mapping or a transport creats a fault. This is done for async communication and works fine. In SXMB_MONI everything looks great with nice checketflags abd acks that indicats faults. This is done so we dont see the faults when the sender sends wrong contents but the sender gets a mail with the fault. Same with the communication and then the accurate person get a mail if that's down. Still checketflags in SXMB_MONI wich is great because the rigth person get a faster response if something is wrong and the fault get fixed faster.
Now I done the same for a sync communication but here I get the red dots in SXMB_MONI. In the async BPM I used transport acknowledgment to solve the red dots but that option are not availebal for sync communication. Dose anybody know an easy way to solve this problem?
The thing is that we want to use this solutionn for all our webservices and we want an easi implementation for it. Please say that i just missed an easy way to fix this.

In sync u will not find the Acknowledgment option as u will get a response or error in sync case. Ur implementation will change a bit. U have to include an exception branch which will be called in case of error in response. So whenever ur webservice sends an error response it will move to that branch and u may use the send mail option there

• Data Guard: db_file_name_convert/log_file_name_convert when using ASM/OMF

All,
I have a call currently open with Oracle regarding the setting of the parameters db_file_name_convert and log_file_name_convert in a data guard environment. We use ASM / OMF for storage and file naming and my question is basically do these parameters have to be set. The documentation says they do where the file structure is different between PRIMARY and STANDBY.
I have successfully tested failover and switchover without these parameters. I have also added a new tablespace on the PRIMARY and watched it create a new OMF datafile on standby when the logs are switched.
I just can't see a reason for setting them when using ASM / OMF.
I'm hoping someone can enlighten me here because I'm getting nowhere whith support. The following is our Data Guard setup:
PRIMARY
DB_NAME=IBSLIVE
DB_UNIQUE_NAME=IBSLIVE
ASM Disk Groups:
+PRODDATA (Data Files, Control Files, Redo Logs)
+PRODFLASH (Archive Logs, Flashback Logs, RMAN backups)
+PRODLOGS (Multiplexed Control & Redo Logs)
STANDBY
DB_NAME=IBSLIVE
DB_UNIQUE_NAME=IBSDR
ASM Disk Groups:
+DRDATA (Data Files, Control Files, Redo Logs)
+DRFLASH (Archive Logs, Flashback Logs, RMAN backups)
+DRREDO (Multiplexed Control & Redo Logs)
Many Thanks,
Ian.

Ian,
I'm having similar thoughts.
I have created a new instance with files in asm under +datadisk/obosact (this is the smae name as primary)
I then modify the db_unique_name from obosact to obosactdr as is required for standby to work
When I recover (duplicate target database for standby; ) I find that the files are in datadisk/obosactdr not in the datadisk/obosact area
I found this reference http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/pdf/MAA_WP_10g_RACPrimaryRACPhysicalStandby.pdf
4. Connect to the ASM instance on one standby host, and create a directory within the DATA disk group that has the same name as the DB_UNIQUE_NAME of the standby database. For example: SQL> ALTER DISKGROUP data ADD DIRECTORY '+DATA/BOSTON';
This step seems to indicate that the location of the files is determined by the db_unique_name not the db_file_name_convert paramenter
DId you ever resolve the issue?

• Why use RMAN CATALOG ?

Hi,
Anybody tell me why use RMAN CATALOG and what benifits if i have create catalog ?

No we have to configure it. I see. But did this user understand that when you quoted my reply ? We need to understand that a lot of users who post here need help and may not have the level of knowlege you have. So, a response like that adds more problems to the one they already have.
So even if you are using nocatalog, if it is not configured to auto backup and it is not backed up, you can still loose your RMAN repository.
