At&t Confirms 3G Network Voice Outages

An hour ago I received a call from a senior tech support analyst in the Tulsa center -- I have her phone number and name -- and she said in a Voice Mail message that she'd been trying to get in touch with me the past few days but "couldn't get through" to my iPhone and that if I was "still having trouble" with my 3G service to let her know and that they'd put a "trace" on both of my iPhones to find out exactly what was going wrong. I liked that idea a lot.
She told me to make sure I had the latest version of iTunes and that the 2.0.1 software update for the iPhone "solves all the 3G problems." At least now we know one intention of that iPhone update -- at least from at&t's perspective.
Her callback number goes nowhere.
The fact that she was calling me but "couldn't get through" suggests to me there is a problem with the at&t network.
I called the regular at&t service line and found out the Tulsa supervisor that called me had closed my case even though she failed to contact me.
The customer support person sent an email to the Tulsa supervisor explaining that I was still having 3G trouble and that my connectivity was not great even though I'm in a "saturated 3G area."
I also reminded my rep I have a 3G Option Wireless GT Ultra Express modem on at&t that is also having degraded service. Six weeks ago download speeds were 1.2 MB and now, over the last week, speeds have fallen from 600 kbps to 437 kpbs to, right now: 297 kbps. You can't blame the iPhone for those declining at&t 3G modem speeds.
The at&t customer service rep told me there was a widespread 3G network problem with the voice side of 3G right after the introduction of the iPhone. The problem has been slowly remedied since then and that most of the 3G network should now be fine on the voice side but that "pockets of trouble" like mine were still being reported.
The customer service rep emailed the Tulsa supervisor more details of our conversation and promised to stay in touch with me. I asked about IMEI trouble and was told the 3G phones don't have IMEI trouble with legacy phones because the IMEI is "embedded in the phone and it won't work on our system if the IMEI isn't correct."
The rep also told me at&t may need to do a complete "delete and reset" on their side to reinitialize my service. That had to be done by the Tulsa people because it is such a "low-level device event" that needs special authorization to happen.
Never once did at&t suggest the problem was with the iPhone. In fact, the rep I spoke to made it pretty clear the 3G problem was on their end, they knew about it, and they were actively working to restore service.
I was impressed with my latest interaction with at&t and I'll let you know if Tulsa calls me back or if I get any more information in the promised follow-ups from the rep I spoke to today.
When you call at&t to complain about the robustness of your 3G connection -- have they ever blamed your trouble on the iPhone? Or have they sort of hinted the trouble is in their 3G network?

UPDATE:
No calls from at&t today on any of their promised follow ups. No traces set. No delete and reset of my account.
I'm sure they closed my trouble ticket because, as you know from reading this forum, they know they have a 3G saturation problem in lots of places and the solution is going to likely take a long time. I am emboldened to know 3G will only get better as the days pass. Patience is not a virtue; it is a 3G necessity.
I was surprised to get my new at&t bill today and find a $47 credit. I guess they took pity on me.
I'm resigned to living in the netherworld of 3G/EDGEland -- the iPhone 3G is a much better EDGE phone than the first version -- so I can't complain too much about using EDGE.
The 2.0.1 update did seem to make the transition between 3G and EDGE smoother.
I get a -103 average of 3G coverage inside our home -- not great for voice but data is okay -- and I don't get dropped calls in the negotiation down to EDGE for voice so that's okay, too.
I'm also getting spectacular battery life. I turned off WiFi and Push. WiFi would eat my battery in 6 hours and the iPhone was three feet away from my wireless router.
Location is on and I have 3G active and I think the key to getting long battery life is in letting the iPhone decide when to use 3G and EDGE; I've been on 3G most of the day and even at a steady -103 the battery has barely drained in 12 hours and I've been doing mail every 15 minutes and checking the weather and playing a few games. Shockingly good!

  • Wow, a full Digitial Voice outage

    Nice that I tried to make a phone call when the emergency call from the school, that my son was ill, went to voice mail on my Verizon Wireless phone because service is so bad in Massapequa, Long Island, NY.  (I had just moved from Garden City, LI, where Data services were degraded for my Iphone), which makes me really sorry I didn't stick with AT&T as my IPAD2 is AT&T and has 5 bars and quite speedy.  When the verizon tech installed my service, he had to drive a town over with his wireless laptop 4 times to program my Network Termination Unit (NTU)... one was defective.
    I picked up my phone to call the school and see what had happpend with my son, and I had dial tone, but
    calls were not connecting.  I reached Verizon via a borrowed AT&T cell, and the agent was pretty nasty
    when I complained about the inability to dial.  He advised me they have a major outage.  WOW, and no
    one knows???  I don't see it on the support site!  Even the small little ITSP's like Vonage have a "System Status"
    on their webside.  Not Verizon.
    Well, I dropped my Asterisk PBX on my net, powered it up, connect to Liquidity.com, where I have a
    SIP endpoint I normally use if I am on the road and need a land line. I will connect via a soft client
    via SIP.  (I actually get 4 channels in  / 4 channels out for $27.99 a month and I have never had any
    problems, except once where I could not dial a particular 888 number, but they resolved that quickly.
    So I have phone service again!  Via Verizon.  But it is my 35/35 Internet that my PBX is doing SIP
    to Liquidity.com that is getting me phone connectivity. My "Verizon Digital Voice" is still dead!
    You know... old POTS -48VDC just worked.  Even their non-digital pots service over 1310nm
    to their DMS switching facility, just worked.  NOW they are using SIP over IP, and they have
    network issues.
    I have been a network engineer designing low latency fiber and wireless networks for
    30 years.  They don't care to talk to people that know more anout their network than
    they do.  The agent and technical support were pretty rude. "We are using a new SIP
    technology on digital voice!?   NEW????  Like 1985 new???  Hello!  SS7 is old
    (5ESS, NT100)... is old.  SIP is not NEW.  It is "Newer", but not new.
    My 16 year old son obtained a PBX package that allows you to basically become a LEC.
    He pays for a 100Mbs Metro-Ethernet with QOS service, and provides SIP based LEC
    services to about 40 homes in his area.  It is funny.  He has redundant connections, and
    his customer base is growing. The PBX administration allows multiple customers,
    and programming down to each customer level, will bill generation, etc. Made by a
    Romanian company... He has two servers running in load balance mode.
    (He is 16!).... I should support him, but I have been using Liquidy as an ITSP for several
    years.  Maybe he should consult to Verizon, he knows SIP internals quite well...
    I am sure he knows more than the "converted copper guys now called "Multimedia Installers"...

    N/W Issues
    If your WebLogic Servers are part of Cluster and if you see any Multicast related errors or warnings like ... ManagedServer is getting Kicked of of Cluster and then again Joining after some time...or if you see any Multicast Lost Messages more than 2-3 times...it means there may be some N/W Issues ...to test this you can use MulticastTest ot MulticastMonitor Utilities.... Like this u will get some idea abt n/w issues.
    N/W latency
    WebLogic Servers logs/Access Logs ... will never be useful to identify the N/W Latency.

  • How do I confirm What NETWORK a VM is connected to?

    I am just starting out with runbooks and making some progress. I have been able to startup and shutdown VM's on a schedule and it all works well.
    I am now looking at how I can select only VM's that are connected to a specific virtual network. The objects returned by Get-AzureVM do not seem to contain the name of the network they are connected to. I have found that Get-AzureSubnet seems to work but
    I am a little conserned about what happens if I have multiple networks with the same Subnet names? I can't find any information on this.
    Has anyone any ideas?

    Hi,
    Based on my experience, there is no Azure PowerShell cmdlets to achieve that directly.
    You can try the commands below:
    Get-AzureVM -Servicename xxx -Name xxx (to get the internal IP address and cloud service name of the VM)
    Get-AzureSubnet (to get the subnet name of the VM)
    Get-AzureVnetSite (to get the regions and subnets of all the virtual networks)
    Get-AzureService (to get the region of the cloud service)
    After you compare the region of the cloud service which the VM belongs to and the Subnet that VM in, you can know the virtual network of the VM.
    However, if you have virtual networks which are in the same region and has similar address spaces and subnet names, it would be impossible to distinguish that.
    The easiest way to check that is from the Azure management portal. You can check the Dashboard of the Virtual network and the names of the VMs belong
    to the virtual network will be displayed under resources.

    Is it possible to have Messenger Voice streaming transit through 443 ? The install guide states that one can tunnel RTC communication (webconf and messenger) into HTTPS/443 to avoid firewalls problems, is it possible with voice also or do we have so stick with port 3478 ??

    voice chat will try to make a peer-to-peer connection if possible, if not it tries to make a connection to the ocs server and if that fails it tunnels the stuff over http /https ........

  • Network extender outage March 26, 2013

    Was having issues off and on yesterday to wake up at 1am to the GBS magenta and the SYS blinking red.  I finally was able to speak to a tech who said they are getting flooded by calls about the same problem.  There is no specific time for it to be fixed but he is hoping sometime in the morning.

    Yes, just the red flashing system light and where I am I cannot get a call out without the extender. Hopefully this issue is resolved soon!

    In project systems, While confirming the Network with personnel number, the planned cost is calculating based on Activity rate maintained in KP26. However for actual costs, the calculation is from HR I assume. Am I right?
    If it is from HR,  where in HR the time sheet rate is maintained for the personnel number?

    I got the answer.
    FYI
    If the network confirmation is entered with the personnel number, the system is looking for the "Position" in HR master and based on that it is picking the workcenter assigned with this resource. So the cost is from the activity assigned in the workcenter even though the network is confimed with a different work center.

    If your UoM for duration(under scheduling in Internal tab of activity) is day then you wont get actual time field to enter in CN25, If you UoM for duration is Hr then you will see the actual time field.
    But still you will get the option of entering actual time for UoM day in CN27(collective confirmation) but not in CN25.

  • Internet outages in Gaithersburg, MD

    Internet has been down since Sunday morning (7/17).  On the phone troubleshooting for 90 minutes on Sunday, 30 minutes yesterday, now they confirm some type of outage.
    Anyone else having problems?

    If your phone service is completely down but the DSL is remaining online but at a slow rate, it's possible one of the two wire pairs somewhere along the line might have broken. DSL can operate on one wire, however it's distance is severely reduced due to the second cable being broken, which increases the amount of electrical interference that the line regularly receives. Normally that interference doesn't bother DSL, but a wire pair that is out of service will take DSL service out no matter how long the fault is. I've seen DSL circuits fail to sync up with only 30 feet of a single wire running by a flourescent light. It took connecting the second wire to completely eliminate that interference to allow the modem to sync.
    Have you check to verify that your phone services works out at the NID, or no? If it is down at the NID when you connect a wired phone to the test jack, complain to Voice Repair since service outages if it's due to bad wiring should be corrected as soon as possible (meaning no more than 24-48 hours). If it works fine outside, you have an issue inside.

    I have been unable to back up my macbook to my time capsule for some time now. I received the following error message (translated from Swedish) when trying to back up using time machine:
    "The network's volume could not be placed on the desktop. There was a problem with the user name or the password for the network.
    Open system preferences and go to Time Machine. Select the volume for security backup again and state the correct user name and password."
    I have confirmed the network password, and also tried with resetting the password. I have not idea what else to do. Any help is much appreciated.
