Attach 64TB disk(s) to Azure VMs

Each Azure storage account comes with 500 TB of block blob storage capacity. However, this vast storage is not available to be used via an Azure VM.
The best we can do right now is attach 16x 1TB disks (page blobs) to an A4 or bigger VM. This poses few problems:
16TB is way too small for many use cases such as using Azure as backup/DR target
This coupling of storage to RAM/CPU is undesirable and drives enterprise clients to other cloud providers.
When will Microsoft provide us the ability to make VHDX 64TB+ files in Azure block blob storage and attach them to Azure VMs?
Dozens of cloud providers make such functionality available. When will be able to have the same in Azure??

Hi Sam,
Thanks for your posting!
As your known, currently, Azure Disk max size is just u to 1TB. The new feature --Azure File Service max size is up to 5TB (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsazurestorage/archive/2014/05/12/introducing-microsoft-azure-file-service.aspx
). For this issue, I suggest you could contact the Azure Technical support to resolve it. Or you can submit a feature request on the feedback page (http://www.mygreatwindowsazureidea.com/forums/34192-windows-azure-feature-voting.)

Will

  • Azure VMs - WSUS / Windows Updates / Patching

    Hey all
I am planning to deploy some Azure VMs. Can anyone point me in the right direction around patching Azure VMs.
Do I just rely on the Windows Update in control panel for updates or would I install a WSUS server just like I would in my on-premise world? ... or would my on-premise WSUS server be capable of patching Azure VMs?
I read somewhere that MS can sometimes just apply patches that can reboot VMs without any notice - is this correct?
    Thanks
    Karen

    Hi Karen;
    Thank you for your post.
Azure provides patching either via Window Updates via Control Panel, or one can also use a WSUS server for patching. Yes you could either have your on-prem WSUS server for updates (you would need to Create a a Site to Site VPN).
Regarding VM reboots there are two types of maintenance planned and unplanned.
To ensure high availability of your applications/services hosted in Windows Azure Virtual Machines,  we recommend using multiple VMs with availability sets. VMs in the same availability set are placed in different fault
domains and update domains so that planned updates, or unexpected failures, will not impact all the VMs in that availability set. For example, if you have two VMs and configure them to be part of an availability set, when a host is being updated, only
one VM is brought down at a time. This will provide high availability since you have one VM available to serve the user requests during the host update process. Mark Russinovich has posted a great
blog post which explains Windows Azure Host updates in detail. Managing the high availability
    is detailed here.

  • On-premises & Azure VMs with my virtual Network both can have same Subnet?

    Dear All,
May i know Azure support on below scenario.
On-Premises & Azure VMs with my virtual Network both can have same Subnet?
    Examples:
On-premises VMs and Azure VMs using same network subnet(192.168.191.0/24).
*On-Premises VMs = The VMs host at my own Data Center.
    Thanks.

    Greetings!
You cannot configure 2 networks with the same subnet and join them. While connecting via VPN, the packet may not even hit the Gateway of a network to get routed to the other. Also, the destination IP may or may not be present on a computer within the
same network. If it is present, the destination might turn to be undesirable, and if not, the packet might be broadcasted and dropped when nobody acknowledges it in the same subnet.
    Hope it clarifies.
    Thank you,
    Arvind

  • Maximum disk size for azure site recovery

    Hi everyone,
I am looking into Azure Site Recovery, and I can't seem to find the maximum disk size I would be able to replicate into Azure.  I have read some articles saying that 1TB is the maximum size, and some people have said that it is 64TB!! I have a File
Server that I would like to protect which is 4TB in size, and if the limit is 1TB I think it is very limiting...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks.

    Hello Robert,
The current size limits for a VM replicating to Azure are :
For an OS VHD (the vhd that has the OS Installation) : 127 GB
For a Data VHD  (<1 TB)
Is the size of your file server running on a single 4 TB volume?
    Anoop KV
    Hi Anoop,
Our File Server is currently running on a single 4TB volume.  Do I have any options with regards to replicating this VM to Azure using Site Recovery?
    Many thanks.

  • Dynamic VHD attached to disk management increases in size

When attaching a dynamic VHD to the disk management, the size of the VHD gets increased by some 32 MB, why does this happen ? What information does the disk management writes to the VHD. When attaching the VHD in read only mode, the Size remains the same.
VHD Spec : The VHD is created using a utility.
The VHD has a Block Size of 524288 Bytes.
    Thanks,
    Sajith

The block allocation table adds to the size of a dynamic disk, an expanded dynamic disk will show larger than a fixed disk of the same usable space because of this.  In addition there is a hard drive header and footer almost like a header and footer
on a word document, it is always present on a dynamic disk which adds space compared to a fixed disk.
See this Microsoft document for additional information:

  • Dynamic Disk Support in Azure Pack

Is Dynamic Disk supported to be added into a VM that is part of a cloud through Windows Azure Pack?

what do you mean by dynamic disk ?
Do you mean dynamically expanding VHDs ?
If you mean that than i confirm you that you can use either dynamic or fixed VHDs types (VHD and VHDx)
Fixed VHDs limitation is only in Microsoft Azure and not in Windows Azure Pack (only VHD)

  • Performance of WRT610N (v1) with attached USB disk

Greetings, I've had my WRT610N for a while now and have had no complaints on performance.  Over this past weekend, however, I attached a USB disk to it (cheaper than adding a NAS).  I can mount it without problem on my Vista box, but it seems that when the disk is being accessed (read or write), I get severe performance degradation on my network connection.  Severe enough to render the network unusable.
Is this to be expected?  Is there a setting in the firmware that will prioritize network activity over disk activity?
The PCs in question are wired and the router is running the latest firmware (1.00.03.15).  The disk (previously formatted on my computer) is NTFS.  If there are any other pertinent pieces of information, please let me know.
    Thanks.

Try reducing the MTU size to 1300 on the router's GUI and check if the problem resolve...If not then, try upgrading/reflashing the router's firmware and reconfigure it from the scratch....

  • Physical Disk Management for Azure

I'm currently trying to troubleshoot one of my clients Azure environments. I find that the IOPS are significantly slower than my local servers. Is there any information about what kind of physical infrastructure Microsoft is providing for Azure / is there
a way to get hardware isolation?

    Hello,
Have you seen the following article?
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/dn197896.aspx
As you can read on the above article, the greater the quantity of disks the greater the IOPS you will get. 8 disks x 500 IOPS = 4000 IOPS.
How much IOPS you have on local server? Match that amount to the quantity of disks as explained in the article.
    Hope this helps.

  • Migration Assistant Does Not See Attached External Disk

I just purchased a MacBook Air to replace an aging MacBook Pro.  Both are running the latest Mountain Lion (10.8.3).  I want to move my files from the MBP to the MBA using Migration Assistant.  I first tried doing this over wi-fi, but when I learned it would take more than 99 hours, I chose to cancel the operation.
So I connected a new Seagate HD to the MBP and configured Time Machine to back up to it.  I let Time Machine run all day, creating hourly updates after the initial backup.  I then disconnected the drive, attached it to the MBA and rebooted.  I ran Migration Assistant and chose to migrate from a Time Machine backup.  However, Migration Assistant does not see the disk.  Yet the disk is mounted on the desktop, I can read and write to it, and I can see the Time Machine backups.  Only Migration Assistant seems unable to recognize the disk.
This isn't the first time I've had problems with MA (see my posting history).  When it works, it's terrific - my new computer has all the settings and preferences as the old.  My applications are all registered and operational.  So I'm very frustrated that I can't get it to work with my new MBA.  It really does diminish the experience of getting a new computer.  That, plus I don't want to spend days and weeks moving things over manually, re-installing, etc.
C'mon, Apple.  Why is Migration Assistant so difficult?  I'd chalk it up to user error, but this many times?

So, finally after fourten hours of unattended "migration," I let it continue overnight and in the morning found that the time remaining had not moved a minute.  I canceled MA and found that not one iota of data had transferred.
As far as I'm concerned, Migration Assistant ranks lower on the Apple success list than Open Doc, Newton, Pink and Taligent.
Now I have to manually install software I want to use on the MBA, apply licenses, and all the other stuff I would expect from Windows.
    NOT happy.

  • Azure VMs no longer see themselves via public virtual IP

At around 4:00 PM (PST) on 4/20/2015, our Azure VM instances could no longer reach themselves via their virtual public IP.  This is a major problem for our web server as we also run a mail server on the same machine.  The web applications can no
longer send mail using the mail server's domain name.  We have made no changes to our networking configuration, endpoints, or firewall.  I'm assuming this is a Microsoft issue.
The machines are reachable from outside via the virtual public IP, as well as from the other VM instances on the same virtual network.
I've never run into anything like this.  Any ideas?
    Thank you.

    OVM Server:      3.2.3-521
    OVM Manager: 3.2.3-521
