Attachements not included in search within Apple Mail

Hi
I have a problem with the search within Mail: my attachments seem not to be included within searches. When I search for terms within an attachment, I get no results. I tried with PDFs, DOCs, RTFs and ZIPped documents.
By the way: if there happens to be some expert out there: what kinds of attachments are searched within mail (e.g. a DOC in a ZIP archive)?
My system is quite new and setup still standard (at least the spotlight preferences).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil

Hi,
It is caused by the deprecated features and components in Outlook 2013:
Outlook search via the Windows Shell
Outlook 2013 will no longer surface search results for mail and calendar items in Windows Explorer (or via the start menu).  Users can still utilize all of Outlook's search functionality from within the app itself.

  • Advanced Search in Apple Mail with Logical Expressions (Attibutes)

We need to be able to search in Apple Mail, currently version 3.6 (936), with advanced expressions such as the junk mail flag.
We want to search only within mail flagged as junk with a specific domain, such as a domain.com. Users are not using Junk Mail moving to junk folders yet. All junk is in the inbox until they train the rules.
Logically speaking this would look something like, FLAG:JUNK FROM:Yahoo.com. I have been unable to find the attribute for flag. It would also be helpful if there was a listing of all attributes that can be searched within mail. This type of list is available through various sources for Spotlight.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Many thanks for the kind reply. I finally installed Thunderbird and so far everything is good.  Time Machine  would, were I using the laptop in a more traditional setting, help resolve this issue. However I am prepping for a year + back pack trip to South America and elsewhere and the MacBook Pro is going along.  What I have done is install Time Machine Editor (since Time Machine is parsimonious about daily updates) and update now once a week. Better than nothing and given what my schedule on the road may be like its a better fit than once a day. One would think Apple would make Time Machine  more controllable particularly in the versions of OSX that are installed in laptops.....
In any case this is my first MacBook Pro and my first Apple computer but I am a long time Linux/Unix user so feel right at home with OSX. In spite of the mail problem, this is without a doubt  the best laptop I ve ever used....and I ve been using them since they were suitcases
Regards and many thanks for the kind read and reply.

  • Gmail server not connecting in OS X Apple Mail

I'm not super tech-savvy, so I will try to explain my problem the best I can (and if you can answer, please keep them simple - thank you!). When using Gmail through Apple Mail on my mac, it often pops up an error message when I go to send an email (something along the lines of can't connect to the server, choose a new one or edit SMTP list). I have googled the proper setup for Gmail numerous times and have used all of those settings so I don't know where I'm going wrong. For reference, I've attached some screenshots of my current Gmail settings within Apple Mail (I've been playing with the "use custom port" option to no avail). Please help me and thank you in advance!

Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
    Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:

Maybe this page can help you construct complex searches in Mail:

I noticed this line in the page:

I think you would probably have to create an HTML page with anchors and then "share" that via e-mail. While HTML does support this, and Apple Mail supports HTML e-mail, such a thing was never intended. Modern e-mail is big hack-job. It is unlikely that such an e-mail message would really work in practice the way you expect.

  • I am not being able to attach a pdf file to my apple mail after upgrading to os X mountain lion

Hi, I was easily able to attach pdf files to my apple mail.  infact I could just open a pdf file and then send it as attachment in the email earlier. but after downloading and upgrading to os X Mountain lion, I am neither being able to attach and send pdf files in my apple mail, nor can I send PDF file as an attachment.
Is there any issue with OS X Mountain Lion.

    Hi, Thanks for the response.
I compose an Email, now I wish to attach a pdf file, I select attach, navigate. select the file, then click on attach.
It shows as attached in the body of my Email ( either as an icon, or the first page of file).
When I send it to the receiver ,  it is not present as attachment in the receiver's email.
whereas the same file when I attach and send through gmail, it goes properly.
    Issue no.2
I open a PDF file.  I go to file > attach to Email > on the right hand side, appears a menu where I click on the attach link,  and I get this message
The SendMail doesn't know how to talk to your default mail client.  Please select a different mail application to use.

  • Received email attachment not included when viewed in Mail on iMac

Email attachment not visible on iMac Mail

We cannot possible know what's wrong with it. But we can offer suggestions that might help.
Try resetting the iPad - its like rebooting a computer.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    This might help as well.
You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again

  • Email attachment not included in forwarded message - no error message given

A coworker of mine was trying to forward a large 25.6MB pdf over the AT&T network.  She downloaded entire message before hitting forward and selected "include attachments" when given the option.  She could see the icon for the attachment at the bottom of the forwarded message, but the recipient doesn't receive the attachment and it is not reflected in the sent email.  There is no warning or error message given.  She could forward this from her desktop account, so it doesn't seem to be a server based limit on attachments..
This is an exchange server email account and an iphone 5.
    Any ideas?

I too am experiencing this behavior, however, for some reason that I do not know, the attachments appear ok one day and then they appear embedded. This is becoming detrimental to my work!
Is anyone looking into this at Apple?

    Title:
Mac Mail att htm issue in outlook
    Question:
I'm using mac original mail software. I did set my HTML style template. The software is best ever.
And works good when I send email to outlook users on PC. However if I attach PDF for example, it does go through and outlook users get it, however when they open message all they see.
    - attached PDF
    - and att00001.htm file which has inside email text
Not everybody gets idea to open it and thy think it is empty email. The same email will be sent to apple user everything looks properly. Why email text is converting into the htm file? It happens only if i attach something to my message, if I don't then email text is not being converted to htm attachment.
I think there are a lot of user that know this issue, did anybody find a solution yet?
    Thank you
    jhyiesla:
I don't think there is anything you can really do about it.
I think that it's how the receivers program is going to interpret it.
For example, I sent an email to my Outlook account from my Mac with just an attachment; no text. I looked at the email in Outlook 2000 and I see the attachment as an item in the body text section of the email. When I look at that same email in Outlook 2003 the attachment shows in the attachment area under the subject line and the body text area is blank.
Then I sent another one with an attachment and some text in the body of the email. In Outlook 2000 I see the text in the text area and the attachment as well as a attxxx file in an area at the bottom of the email. The att file was empty. In Outlook 2003 that same email as the attachment and the empty att file in the attachment area at the top and under the subject line and in the body text area of the email is the text that I typed.
Although Mac Mail uses standard protocols, which is why you can send an email to a Windows PC, it just does some different things. In the WIndows world Outlook and Outlook Express also handle some things differently.
    Goldblum:
    Thank you for your reply
This issue makes mail.app useless, do you have any recommendations?
Other client which are as good as the mail.app or would be nice to know what is forcing to convert body text to attachment? I could reduce beautiness of my email template by taking out header (jpg) or not using rich text. What exactly is forcing outlook to convert body to attxxxxx.htm file?
    jhyiesla:
I truly don't know the answer to that question. Sometimes similar things happen coming the other way. I'll get emails in to my Mac Mail that have jpg files and I'll see the actual pictures in the body of the email.
I happen to also have Office 2008 for the Mac installed and when I sent my self a message and looked at it in Outlook 2000 and XP, the email looked "normal" in all instances. The attachment was marked as an attachment, text was where it should be and no att file.
There are other email clients that would probably work on the Mac like Thunderbird... but I'm guessing that you'd have a similar thing as happens with mac mail. Still it might be worth the download to test it out.
    Goldblum:
I used entourage and same HTML template for email and have no problems. It is just so that entourage is as any other MS product "broken" out of the box but did good job and same message is not being converted to HTML attachment when it goes to outlook on PC. I will continue researching internet because it has to be solved. I can't send a message to client without comment to attached invoice. This is so not professional. I will play more with settings of mail.app to see what else can be done to avoid conversion.
    jhyiesla:
Entourage probably works well with Outlook because they're both MS products and MS is going to have somewhat similar looks to all their Office products... although there is quite a bit of difference between Entourage and Outlook.
Here's a link that may help you on your search:
    http://email.about.com/od/macemailclients/tp/free.htm

As mentioned, Outlook is not email standards compliant. It probably never will be based on Microsoft's history. However, I think there are various issues involved in the problems people have. I often send emails from home to my Outlook account at work. I have never experienced any of the problems that I've seen posted anywhere regarding Mail and Outlook.
My conclusion is that there are issues with certain Exchange Server configurations and/or issues with your own ISP mail server causing the issues.
I do have my system set up to Always send windows friendly attachments (from what I've read, this really is 'send Outlook friendly attachments'), and always put attachments at the end. Prior to the 'always put attachments at the end,' I wasn't having any issues, either. However, I read that that setting helped with other email clients, so I use it.
The obvious question is, "well, how is your exchange server configured." I would love to provide the answer to that question; however, I work for a DoD organization, so actually tracking down the person that knows the answer to that question will take somewhere between five years and never. With my 20+ years experience with the DoD, I'm leaning towards the never end of the spectrum. The other half of the equation is, "I'm using cox as my ISP."

  • HT201320 Does my email service provider have to provide the ability for me to create an IMAP email account in order for me to create Sub-folders within Apple Mail?

Hi, Apple Mail provides a function to create sub-folders within my mailbox so that I can group emails of similar subjects or from the same sender. My service provider only provides POP email protocol and the New Folder button does not appear in my Apple Mail account for that service provider. Icloud provides the opportunity for the iPad user to select between POP and IMAP. I can select IMAP and the New Folder button appears allowing me to create sub-folders within the icloud email account. Does this mean I cannot create sub-folders in my email account unless my service provider provides customers with the option of creating an IMAP email account?
This appears to be a problem for quite a few Apple Mail users, but service providers appear reticent to provide a response other than 'use Microsoft Exchange / Hotmail, Google GMail, or some other third party email service provider'. This is why I have chosen icloud as my email service provider. It is Apple and therefore Apple supports it. I have been a Telstra customer for over 15 years and they informed me today, strongly, that they support their own products and services, not Apple products, even though Telstra sell them. When I asked the Telstra Customer Support Manager whether they support Telstra customers, I was informed 'no, because the Telstra customer is not a Telstra product or service'. I have since cancelled my Telstra email account and am in the process of cancelling all of my Telstra services.

    Apple Sceptic wrote:

Yes. That is what it means. You need an IMAP account in order to create sub folders on the iPad.

  • Can't do search in Apple Mail

I have installed the update to fix Mail problems in Mavericks but still cannot do a search in Mail so cannot easily find specific messages.

What finally worked was to not use iCloud at all.
I've had 3 mailboxes, all gmail and none of them worked with the searchfield in Apple Mail, only in Spotlight. All fixes have been tried, envelope index reset, spotlight and all. No luck.
Only a complete zero-erase of the drive and a clean install of Mavericks made the search work and when I activated iCloud only that icloud mailbox was being searched nothing else.
So I did another zero-erase and clean install and setup the 3 google accounts directly. Never did I activate iCloud or made any part of it active. Search kept on working, after all updates, Office 2011 install and updates. Everything works fine, just not with iCloud.
This iCloud account does contain signatures which install themselves when you enable iCloud, so my guess is that those signatures or settings for Apple Mail cause some sort of malfunction and will prohibit Apple Mail from showing any other results than iCloud from that moment on.
Of course iCloud is pretty great, but in this case it does something with Apple Mail and limits searchresults...
