ATV2 home sharing problem

I have atv2 with latest firmware and I'm using  windows 7 all current updates with atvast antivirus with windows firewall itunes 10.7. When I try to play a video from my itunes video library atv asks me to turn on home sharing and it is already on. So I have to go to my computer turn home sharing off and then back on. When the movie is over and I want to play another movie I have to do the same turn off home sharing and turn it on again. Any help would be great.
Thanks,

Is your computer going to sleep by chance?  It might not be turning Home Sharing on and off.  It might be that you are waking the the computer up when you go over to it.  If your computer go to sleep mode and does not "Wake On Lan" then AppleTV can not connect to iTunes.  Ever since Lion the "Wake On Lan" interupt has not been working reliably.

Home Sharing is designed to work on your local network not across the internet/cloud.
Stuff is accessed under the Computers column where your local iTunes library on a local computer would appear.
Home Sharing would share your iTunes content (i.e. stuff stored in itunes on the computer, not in the cloud) with AppleTV or an iPad etc on the SAME network.
AppleTV2 will not be able to see itunes content on the work computer over the internet.  It's not designed to.  if the work computer was on the home network it would.
iCloud is in it's infancy and is not a mature product - iTunes TV Show purchases appear on AppleTV, but currently music does not unless you are subscribed to iTunes Match. I find this rather odd to be honest, along with the inability to buy music on AppleTV2.  Movies purchased in iTunes are not authorised for iCloud viewing currently either.
Maybe it has something to do with iTunes Match 'getting in the way' - i think they assume you'll use that whereas you really want to be able to access Purchased music from the cloud without subscribing to itunes Match which is overkill for some.

  • IPhone Home Sharing problems

Here is my home sharing problem.  I have 3 devices, a MacBook Air, a PC running Windows 7, and an iPhone 4.  All software is up to date.  ITunes is installed on both computers, and the exact same Apple ID and password have been entered for home sharing on all devices.  The iPhone's music library will NOT show up in any of the Home Sharing folders in the other computers.  However, the Mac and PC libraries DO show up in the iPhone, so the password is correctly entered.  All computers have been activated and reactivated, restarted, iTunes reinstalled, my router has been reset, firmware up to date.  Music from the other computers can be played through Home Sharing on the iPhone, but the iPhone library will not show up in the other computers.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!
    - Cole

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Home sharing problems ATV2, Itunes 10.6.3.25

    This is the situation
Apple TV shows up GRAYED OUT in Airplay speakers list
ATV2 does not show up as an option in iOS remote (iPhone 4)
Home Sharing IS enabled both in iTunes and Apple TV
network appears to be fine-- can get all other content availble through ATV2, including music via Match

Same thing here except I'm not running server software on the Mac Mini. The Apple support person said that iTunes is the same, server or not. He recommeded setting sleep to never, but I get the same connection problems. I also automatically restart the Mini and relaunch iTunes on startup every morning at 6 AM. And, as with your experience, the only temporary solution is to quit and restart iTunes at the time that I want to connect. Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad all have the same connection problem. My only hope at this point is 10.8. I have to say, 10.7 has never behaved better than a beta release. I hope they took a little more time with Mountain Lion.
Sorry I don't have a solution. I wanted to add my name to the list and hope someone out there has some insight to share.

  • ATV2 Home Sharing Failure after Upgrade to 4.2.1

I have 3 ATV2s in my house. All 3 were working fine and able to stream from either my MBPro or iMac with no difficulties. Since upgrading one of my ATV2s to the newest software/firmware version 4.2.1, it is no longer able to log into my iMac library to stream. However, It still works with my MBPro. The other 2 ATV2s, which I did not upgrade (fortunately) to the latest ATV2 software version, continue to work flawlessly as they have all along logging into either library. When the upgraded ATV2 tries to log into my iMac library, it fails and generates a screen that says it is unable to do so and asks to verify that iTunes is open and it is on the same network.
Any ideas regarding what has caused this and how it can/will be corrected? Apple needs to take a close look at this.

I have the same problem. the unique solution is to put Poweroff to make a reboot in force of the appleTv.
i lost my homesharing after a inactivity.
if you shutdown tour computer, the homesharing don t apparears.
the home sharing is visible betweteen computers.
i am sur that it s a bug important of the network connexion. AppleTv think that the port was open, but I was closed.
I was a problem of Tcp/Ip connect. AppleTv don t work well the interconnectivity client and server. i hope that bug was resolve in a short Time by apple.

  • HOME SHARING PROBLEMS, PLEASE HELP

I'm trying to use home sharing between my laptop and desktop. I have no idea what the problem is. I am able to view my laptop's library from my desktop, but it doesn't work vice versa. The computers have different OS's, could that be the problem? According to the troubleshooting, everything should be working fine. Please help.

Try turning Home Share off then on on the MacBook Pro and then check Remote App to see if now appears and you can connect - for me it works but eventually I will have to repeat the process to get it working again.
The four digit code method still works.

  • Itunes - Home Sharing Problems

Ok, i got a new dell about a week ago, i had all of my music and itunes files on a mac and i wanted to transfer the music to the new computer, i did that and got maybe 30 songs over their but it said the iphone was synced on the mac so i had to erase the contents if i wanted to copy music from the dell. so i went back to the mac, transferred the purchases from the iphone to the computer then was gonna import those from home sharing onto the dell, only problem is the home sharing tab on the side bar wont show either computer?
so i made sure we were on the same wifi - it was
made sure the home sharing was on, on each computer- it was
then made sure we were logged onto the same itunes account - it was
after i got frustrated with that i decided to check, i took the dell laptop into the room where apple tv was and what do you know, i could play the files on the dell on the apple tv. then i tried using the remote app on the iphone on the mac (since the computers a desktop, i couldn't move it) the remote controlled the mac fine ( the remote works over home sharing)
    please help
    sincerely, a apple customer

what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my MBP's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
if you then click on the house icon, it will change to this and the shared library will load. at that point, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting the content and clicking on import.
if the icon looks like this , home sharing has not been set up correctly.
in order for home sharing to work
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.
if none of the above makes a difference, try turning home sharing off on all computers, then turning it back on.
these reads will be useful: one and two.

  • Home sharing problems since Apple TV update

    Hello everyone;
I have a Apple TV 2, an iPhone 4S, an iPad 2 and a Macbook pro 17" on the same iCloud account. Syncing of data between the computer and two iOS devices has been rock solid. Kudos on this system architecture, it is exactly what I have come to expect from Apple.
I recently purchased the Apple TV2 - but am now past the warranty period - to stream music and videos to the stereo from my Macs, either the iPad or computer mostly. It has been an excellent digital sound source, since most of my music is encoded full quality.
For the past two years the performance of this system has been flawless. I have the Remote app for my iPad, which is an awesome way to control an Apple TV for music playing, since you can build the 'Up Next' menu really easily, and having the iPad keyboard for inputting passwords and search items in the youtube browser is very handy.
About three months ago my Apple TV requested an update. When it was done my home sharing network was not working, would drop out, would shut off suddenly and disconnect my devices. I searched the forums and all I could find was the suggestion to make sure iTunes and both iOS devices had the latest updates. Sounded a bit cliche, but reasonable, so that was done. Still no joy with the network. Could not get it to connect.
Found another link that recommended updating the firmware on the modem. Tried that, and voila, the home sharing was back. Didn't last though, the next time my Apple TV went to sleep, it was gone again. I realized the modem rebooting may have been what did it, so I tried it again, and voila, the home sharing was back… and stopped again after a while.
Now I have to reboot the router every time I want to connect and it doesn't last. This is a pain in the arse that disrupts everyone on it, and is flatly incompetence on the part of Apple to release an update that screws up the main reason anyone would buy their product. The Apple TV is half a device without streaming. It should be said that Netflix and the internet are perfect on the Apple TV throughout this whole ordeal, so obviously there's no problem with the internet, the wireless, or the hardware. It plays music and video perfectly through whatever source is available. It just won't home share with the rest of my stuff. Literally wile I typed this my iPad just lost its connection to the Apple TV while the remote app was shuffling my music in the background.
So this is my rant. I've been a happy Apple consumer and advocate since my first Powerbook 140 bought in 1991. It's been great to watch the evolution of this company, and I'm always impressed with the user experience they provide, until now. Purchasing an Apple TV was a no-brainer for me, since everything else was seamless, and originally that's exactly what it was until this update ruined it.
I tried to contact Apple for help, or to find a tech note that would lead me to the solution, and was told I'd have to pay for the call. They did this, not me, so why do I have to pay them to fix their mistake? Does a company have the right to ruin a product you've already purchased, then ask for money to help you fix it? That is a strange business practice.
If there's something I need to configure or reset, so be it, but where can someone find that out? Literally in 10 minutes of what should be an innocuous update, I have lost my music box through no fault or mistake of my own.
If there is someone from the Apple tech support community or genius bar on this forum I invite you to support your product and let me know if there's a solution to the problem Apple created. They've made their own product look like crap. This is very un-mac.

I had variations of all the issues described after my firmware update to  Apple TV software 7.0.2(6915) And all my iOS devices to 8.0.2.  Had Home Sharing turned on on all devices and Apple TV.  Initially AirPlay icon disappeared completely from Control Center but mysteriously appeared overnight.  Prior to that I tried all standard Apple Support advice I can find including resetting my Apple TV which was really frustrating especially when it did not solve the issue.  Even after AirPlay icon appeared this morning, I am not able to AirPlay my home screen from Control Center  -  every time I select AirPlay and turned on Mirroring, it reverted back to my iPhone.  Even Remote App did not work though Home Sharing was turned on.
Then  I tired this out of the blues - went to my iPhone 6 Photo Stream and selected a video clip I took and then flip up Control Center and then tried AirPlay and mirroring again to Apple TV and then everything started to work!  All  my other devices started working again as well. Remote App is able to connect and pair with AppleTV.  Seems like Apple TV needed a jolt after firmware upgrade from some media app like Photo Stream.  Very strange.
Hope this helps others on this thread.  Most important of all, if there are any Apple support personals or engineers reading this, I hope this might help in troubleshooting this annoying bug and provide an important fix.
Don't mean to vent but I am a long time Apple fan since Mac Classic days and pretty much have everything Apple from computers, tablets, phones, to AirPort Extreme. I have always been bragging to my friends and family on how seamless and trouble free Apple products are but you can imagine how embarass I was when I had friends over for Thanksgiving and I was touting Apple TV/AirPlay until this happened under my very nose. This gave some an opportunity to brag about the competition.  Apple please do us proud again  - we still want to brag about you.

  • How to escalate ATV Home Sharing Problems to Apple?

I too am one of the many people that is having issues with Home Sharing between my AppleTV and iTunes.  I am a relatively technically-savvy user, and I am unable to determine why this problem exists.
I have a mac mini that does nothing except serve iTunes to the home.  The machine was purchased within the last year and a half, never goes to sleep, and is not connected to a display.  The entire house is wired with Cat-5, so I have a direct connection between all of the machines in the house, and all devices like the Apple TV units that we own.  The AppleTV is set to never sleep as well, so the working connection should remain in place.
The issue is that we have Home Sharing turned on in iTunes on the Mac Mini, and on the Apple TVs (mostly 3's, but a couple of 2's).  After a period of time (couple of hours let's say) the connection breaks.  When we go to the AppleTV and try to connect to the library, it shows as "loading" for an indefinite period.  The only way to resolve the problem is to remotely access the iTunes library from another machine and double-click a file (like a movie for instance) and then the hanging-state on the ATV goes away and the files are available for play.  Couple of hours later - same issue arises.
The problem is not at the computer level IMHO, b/c I setup another iTunes library on my Mac Pro to test, and the same issue arises.
The only thing that has changed in the last few months is software on the AppleTV.  2 versions ago, this issue arose and I began to research the problem, but a software update came from Apple and the issue went away.  Since the most recent update - the problem appears to be back.
I have tried all options I could find - resetting my ID, setting the units to not go to sleep, researching and changes ipv6 settings, etc, and nothing keeps the connection in place.
I am an Apple supporter, and have clearly bought into the ecosystem.  What I expect for my money is that the basics work consistently.  An established connection between new devices that are directly connected should always work.  Wondering what should be done to engage with Apple to advise of this issue that I and many other users seem to be having.

    Hi Winston,
I appreciate your response.  I will engage Apple via the link you provided.
If I were the only person having this issue I would tend to agree with you, but the same issue appears in a number of threads on the front page of this board.  In addition, if I never had this working well, then it could be a user error issue.  I haven't changed anything about my network recently - nothing.  No new routers, no new settings, no new devices, nothing.  Literally, I had this working well for like a year, then suddenly it wasn't (and coincidentally after an update).  Then, suddenly it was working perfectly - after an update - and now suddenly it isn't - after an update.  The only change in the whole chain is the software update, so tough to imagine its a network problem.  In addition, I have a Western Digital Live device on the same network accessing my NAS, and it's working perfectly.
I'll use the link you provided.  Thanks again.

  • Home Sharing Problem: "You do not have permission to access the requested resource"

This problem has been posted numerous times here with not one single answer that I can find. Not only does it take about fifteen minutes for Home Sharing to load on my iPad, once it does load I get the "You do not have permission to access the requested resource" when I try to play any video. I've tried resetting everything. Even home videos won't play via Home Sharing. Is there a known bug that someone can tell me about? Or is Home Sharing on iPad just broken.
Possibly related: videos that play on my iPhone on Facebook won't play on my iPad. The iPad is newer and more powerful, you think it would be the other way around. I have never used a jail break on anything. I have never installed any kind of security software.
iPhone 4, iPad 3, mid-2010 27" iMac, Airport Extreme all on the same network with the same iCloud ID.

I have been having the same issues on all my iPads / iPhones and can't come up with much info either.
I just seemed to fix it by quitting the app on the device, changing my wifi network to the 5Ghz band and retrying. Loads quick and plays every time (for the last 5 minutes at least)
I did read that there is a bug, in that if you close down the app after you have watched the video(s) you won't get the "permission" error. Seems to be working.
Not super helpful but I feel your pain.

  • IOS Remote and Home Sharing problems with iTunes 10.6.3

I'm having a problem with Home Sharing and the iOS Remote app accessing iTunes since the 10.6.3 update. I have the following:
2011 Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.4 and iTunes 10.6.3
    IPhone 4 running iOS 5.1
    iPad 2 running iOS 5.1.1
    Latest model Apple TV
The Remote app on both the iPhone and iPad are unable to connect to the iTunes library on the Mini (the app will just sit there trying to connect but never make a connection). The Apple TV is showing the same behaviour: when I go into 'Computers' it tries to connect to my library without success.
    I've tried a few things:
    1) Turning off and re-enabling Home Sharing on the Mac Mini
    2) Deleting my library in the iOS app and then re-adding it
In both cases this seemed to work at first, but then after a while I was unable to connect again.
I have since discovered that if I quit and restart iTunes on the Mac this seems to resolve the issue on all of the other devices. But again this is a short term fix and after a while they are once again unable to connect.
The Mac Mini is always on and is set to not sleep (although I have to enter the password again after an hour).
At first I thought this might be time related, and that if the Mac had been idle for a while and the drives were 'sleeping' then the issue would occur. However, if I have left the Mac for several hours and then go back to it and login and start something playing in iTunes the other 3 devices still cannot connect even though iTunes is active and reading from the drive. As soon as I restart iTunes they can all see the library again for a while.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    thanks
    Mark

  • ITunes, iPad, Remote app Home Sharing Problems. Please help!

So I have my 13" Macbook Pro with the latest version of iTunes installed (10.5.2)
I also have a 32GB Wifi iPad 2 with iOS (5.0.1) with the Remote app installed.
I am so frustrate with this stupid Home Sharing. I followed the directions the app gave me beginning with turning on Home Sharing on iTunes on my MacBook with my account. I then used the same account to turn on Home Sharing on my iPad from the Remote app. I wait a bit, and wait some more, and yet my iTunes library isn't shown in my Remote app like it is in my iPhone.
I've tried to find the answer to my problem via Google and these Apple Support Communities, but with no fix.
I wish you could just connect your device to the computer and punch in the 4-digit code like they used to have you do.
    Please help! Thanks in advance.

Try turning Home Share off then on on the MacBook Pro and then check Remote App to see if now appears and you can connect - for me it works but eventually I will have to repeat the process to get it working again.
The four digit code method still works.

  • HOME SHARING PROBLEM

    Hi,
I just bought an apple tv.  I have an IMAC running on 10.5.8 and i have Clear Wireless Rover puck (here is a link to specs:http://www.clear.com/support/download/clear-spots/rover-puck-by-clear).
I currently have my wife and my IPHONE 3g, one IPAD2, and our HD tv that's connects to the wireless connection, along with my IMAC.  I haven't had any problems playing videos or connecting to the internet at all.
I originally set up the Apple TV, but it said "make sure Home Sharing is turned on" which when I check my IMAC it was.  I have the latest version of ITUNES.  The homesharing function will work and then disconnect after 30-40 minutes.  I finally got fed up and took it to the MAC store, all they did was replace the apple tv saying it might just be defective.  Now the new APPLE TV they gave me connected immediately to the home sharing, but as soon as I get out of one movie and try to play another it will stay buffering.  Sometimes if I just go back to the main screen it will again say to make sure home sharing is turned on.  Sometimes I restart everything and it will find the computer, but then others it will not.  I have no control and it's really fustrating and dissappointing.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I just want to be able to play movies from my library on my tv.

    Leo,
Glad it worked and it isn't temporary. It will continue to work the way its supposed to.
As for the port forwarding rule, your routers configuration is different than mine but yes adding an inbound filter rule is what we were looking for here. Since you are not able to give your apple tv a static ip address, you may run into a problem when the DHCP lease runs out and apple tv goes to get a new lease. People have reported that they have lost their connection to iTunes when this happens. Hopefully you can find where the duration of lease is and set it to 24 hours or a week instead of 1 hour like some people have also found.
At your internet ports, the range should be only for that particular port. For instance, port number 123, the range should be from 123 to 123. You really do not want to open any more ports than are necessary. This could lead to you being more exposed to worms, viruses, etc. These ports are ports that are used specifically by Apple and others. Ideally, you shouldn't have to use port forwarding at all but Apple changed something with their firmware for the latest version for Apple TV that has caused people to have to utilize this feature on their router.
Correct in typing in the ip address assigned to your apple tv. Local port should be 123, the same as the range. At the next screen, port 123 is TCP and not UDP. There is a difference and these need to be specific. Follow my previous post for which ports should be TCP or UDP.
Again, glad that it is working for you. It was really frustrating trying to figure out what needed to be done to make the apple tv work again. It is equally frustrating when I still see people posting the same issues I was having and not knowing what to do. I'm trying to get the word out as best as I can because once it is working correctly, it's really a nice piece of equipment.

  • Home sharing problem with music between iTunes and Apple TV

    iTunes 10.5.2.11
    Apple TV2 running 4.4.4 (3330)
    Windows 7 pc
    WI FI connection
Apple TV is losing its connection to iTunes on my windows 7 pc after streaming EXACTLY TWO SONGS.   I've never had this problem until the last update of iTunes to 10.5.2.11 and Apple TV 4.4.4.  Home sharing is on in both iTunes and apple TV.  I launch my computer from apple TV and open the music folders, select an album/playlist or even shuffle (doesn't matter what I do).  Apple TV will play two songs and then lose its home sharing connection to my iTunes songs.  TheBuffering icon continues to spin as it looks for the next song on the playlist, but the \song never starts playing.  If I sue the apple TV remote to return to the main menu, it is apparent that my computer is no longer visible to apple tv.
The only temporary "fix" (which again only works for EXACTLY TWO SONGS) is to re-start home sharing on my pc or apple tv.   Obviously, you can't listen to music by continuously turning on/off home sharing on eiter device.  Doesn't matter which device I choose to restart home Sharing.
I've spent considerable time troubleshooting this issue.  It is NOT a router issue, nor is it a signal quality issue.  I'm able to stream feature-length movies from iTunes to apple TV without issue.  It's only music files.  The cynic in me thinks its apple wanting me to spend $25 to put my music in its iCloud service.
Other troubleshooting that I've tried.  None successful.
    Uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes.
Tried a fresh install of iTunes on a brand new windows 7 maching
    Restored my apple TV.
    disconnected / re-connected outlook.

bump to Apple.  Many people are having this issue and no fix yet!
