ATV3 not using optical audio with mirroring
MacBook Pro to the Apple TV mirroring works fine for video but not audio. The audio is from the TV speakers with mirroring but the ATV is connected to my amp and speakers via the optical audio output on the ATV3. The ATV outputs to the amp / tuner / receiver all day for the radio app in the ATV but with mirroring it sends audio to the worthless TV speakers. Any idea how to convince the ATV to send the audio to the amp with mirroring on?
So I guess MP3/AAC files are not configured to use all 5 speakers?
Yes, this is the case. They are probably just stereo files (two audio channels). It depends on your receiver/speakers just how a stereo file plays through, there may be a setting to make stereo files come through all the speakers anyway. But, the audio coming out of your Mac is just going to be stereo with those kinds of files, your audio system may be able to handle the channels differently.

I can not use CanaScan N670U with my Macbook Pro. I download Canoscan toolbox 4.1 from Cannon websit. It still keep saying "The scanner plug-in was not found". Please help
There is a solution (I'm running Snow Leopard on a Core2Duo iMac, but this problem arose when I was running Leopard on a G4 PowerBook too).
Problem:
You download the OS X driver for the scanner from Canon's site. I already had the CanoScan Toolbox (4.1) stored on an external drive.
You unzip the driver and run the VISE installer. After a search it finds your copy of Photoshop (and maybe even the CanoScan Toolbox), and you click to install on that/those location(s).
You get a couple of error messages, which you click through.
You restart your computer and try to run the scanner but you get an error that the driver is wrong or missing and the process will abort.
Solution:
BEFORE you restart, and with the installer package still open -
1. Copy the Into_CFMSupport_Login & Into_CMPrefs folders to
Applications : Canon Utilities
Applications : Canoscan Toolbox
and remove the prefix Into_ from each folder
2. Check whether the installer placed N067U_Library.shlb into the top level (not User level)
Library : CFMSupport
and if it didn't, move it there yourself
THEN restart, and try again. It worked for me (via Photoshop), but whether it will work for everyone, I don't know. -
I could not use my Mac with projector. The projector does not show my power point, just the wallpaper picture. What should Idi, where can I setting it?

Using onboard audio with SB Live card installed
Is it possible (or even wise) to use onboard audio with a SB Live Value card installed. I need to keep the SB Live card as I still have a couple of gameport devices, but I'd like to take advantage of the onboard audio (or should that be free myself from the disdavantages of the SB Live).
I guess the key issue is diabling the SB Live sound but still keeping the gameport active. Is this do-able or am I just opening a can of worms ?Could well be a can of worms.
I can only say that I have had both installed on my K7n420 NF1 and was able to switch back and forth, all I did was set what sound controller I wanted to be used in the sound device config in the windows sound control panel.
Try it and see....but I am a bit pessimistic as far as it doing what you expect. -
ATV3 6.0 Optical audio distortion
Like many others, the audio is distorted streamed from iTunes via Home Sharing through the ATV3 to my receiver using Optical out. Both Wireless and Ethernet are the same distortion. All types of stream eg MP3 & WAV.
Optical cable, ATV3 are brand new.
I updated the software first time I turned it on to 6.0. I have turned Sound Effects Off, Dolby Off, Output to Auto from 16 bit.
Is there any fix from Apple?
Many thanks for any help. Thanks for your question.
I am only using it for audio playback. So I have not used HDMI for audio and will not be.
I have read of several others having exactly the same issue with distorted audio on Optical Out. But so far noone seems to have got to the cause or cure, apart from suggesting the things I mentioned that I have tried to no effect.
Very frustrating. -
Can I use Optical Audio alongside a speakerless monitor to play audio through speakers?
I have an Apple TV 3 and so far I am relatively pleased. However.. I have no sound, this just about renders my Apple TV useless. Is it possible to use the Optical Audio cable to play sound from films, music etc. while still having the Apple TV connected to the Monitor via HDMI? Do you have any suggestions as to what speakers would be good? (looking at around £50 - £100) I was thinking of getting some of the Bose Companion 2 monitor speakers and then using a DAC to play audio from the Apple TV to the speakers. Would this work? If not, does anybody have any other suggestions?
P.S. I can't plug speakers into my monitor for some absurd, annoying reason unbeknown to societyMy ATV is connected to the tv with hdmi
My optical is connected to my stereo
I mute my tv and only play out of the stereo -
How important is using optical audio, since no surround?
I'm out of optical inputs on my A/V receiver. How important is using the digital optical audio output, since there is no surround sound on the Apple TV?
Is using analog audio cables that bad, since the content on Apple TV is stereo to begin with?
Thanks for the help.I don't think the issue will be surround sound since surround sound isn't supported by the tv, although as capaho points out there are some files floating around out there that appear to work with the tv, however as far as I know these are all test files and there isn't actually any content as such available.
The issue for you will be one of quality, which of course means different things to different people. Personally I can only tell the difference between analogue and digital sound on some tunes and my personal taste in music does not always include those tunes (more of a Rolling Stones listener than Debussy) , so I'm quite happy to use analogue audio for my set up. Whether you are happy to do so will be one of personal taste. -
Does anyone use Optical Audio out to connect studio monitors?
I am planning to snatch a Mac Mini as my studio upgrade. I am also planning on buying some studio monitors (as opposed to just regular speakers). I was wondering what people use to get great, accurate results for under $600. The Mini can achieve optical audio out, apparently. Are there studio monitors that use digital, optical audio as a means to connect? How do fellow Logic home studio users have their audio out set up?
Scroto Saggins wrote:
well, optical is digital (right?), so wouldnt it be the only way to get the best, uncolored sound out of a Mac? what other (better) options are there? I started this topic because I dont really notice studio monitors that use optical, and I am wondering why? Whats the downside?
Because the ones that do, are way over the budget of most people on this forum.
I have this pair :
http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/General/Product.aspx?PId=28&MId=5
They retail at around 1500 per pair. They are not the most expensive ones out there, rather the less expensive ones with digital inputs.

Problems with audio with mirroring
Trying out Apple TV. It has worked well with streaming from iTunes and my iPad, but cannot get audio if mirroring with my Fall 2011 MBP with Mountain Lion. Have a surround sound with a Denon AVR 559 Reciever. Talked with Apple Care and I get audio from the TV if just using the HDMI cable. The TV does not have a digital audio port to test it. Since the digiltal audio works fine with iTunes and the IPad there seems to something in the way the audio mirrors or the fact that I am getting no seperate Audio output on mirroring as compared to streaming. Apple TV shows up as a Sound output option but does not ler me select it. Once it works with the TV and not the receiver cannot get any further help from Apple Care. Different Audio output from Streaming vs. Mirroring? Bug? Any Ideal?
Yes I have had that pain for days but visiting the VLC forum shows its a common problem.
Try reverting to v 2.0.8 which I just have and all becomes audible. Phew
Best of luck -
Unable to Use Onboard Audio with Nvidia GPU since Linux 3.4
I am currently stuck using linux 3.3.8-1 along with nvidia 295.49-1, because I don't know how to workaround the kernel disabling MSI for snd-hda-intel. This module is used by both the Nvidia HDMI audio and the ALC880 onboard audio. Previously, I have been able to disable HDMI audio to be able to use the onboard audio, but now I don't know what to do. I have attempted to use "options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1" when modprobing on boot, which gets rid of the "hda_intel: Disabling MSI" message but it hasn't given me a working onboard audio output.
I have also used the following command along with enable_msi=1 (found here: http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Document … HOWTO.txt) in my rc.local
echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:00\:1b.0/msi_bus
Of course, it is my assumption that the kernel disabling MSI is the cause of the problem, but it might be something else. Please let me know if any additional logs would be helpful.

When should I use "Optical Audio"?
Hello,
I have the new (3rd Gen) Apple TV connected wirelessly to my home theater and HDTV. I have the HDMI cable connected to my surround-sound receiver. I was under the impression that the HDMI cable carries both sound AND audio. If this is the case, I'm trying to figure out what the Optical Audio input is for? I went ahead and purchased an Optical Audio cable and connected it to my surround sound receiver.
My question is this: Do I need to have that Optical Audio cable connected, or should I disconnect it and just use the HDMI connection? I looked in the AppleTV manual and it does not describe why you would connect this, and I'm scratching my head trying to understand this.
Thanks much! Some old receivers didn't handle digital audio over HDMI very well - the only reason I can think of using the port.
If it worked without the optical before, you don't need it now! -
How can I reach my iCloud notes using a PC with WinXP.?
Last week I was on the road and needed to reach some info I wrote on a Note using my iPhone to my iCloud... I left my iPhone at Home and Only had access to an old internet access PC with Windows XP but was not sure how to reach my iCloud notes... I tried the iCloud site but asking me to setup iCloud on that PC.. The PC had a limited user account so basically I was not able to install anything on it...
Please let me know... :-)Can you clarify how you intend to setup the AirPort Express?
Obviously, if you plan to connect the AirPort Express to a modem, the Ethernet port on the Express will be utilized for the Internet connection, so no other Ethernet ports will be available.
If this is the case, you will need to look into obtaining a router with 3-4 Ethernet ports to allow both your AirPort Express and computer to connect. -
Why not use Bridge CS4 with PsCS3?
I will post this on both the Bridge and Ps User-to-User forums as it applies to both.
I have PsCS3 and PsCS4 installed side by side in the default folders assigned by Adobe but have shifted my Bridge CS4 Cache (containing all the thumbnails and previews) from C:Documents and Settings\etc to a subfolder within My Documents, which I had previously moved to my F: drive - my main data drive.
I have found Bridge CS4 to be much more stable than Bridge CS3. Additionally, Bridge CS4 has certain features which make it more attractive and easier to use than Bridge CS3. I want to use Bridge CS4 in conjunction with PsCS3 until Adobe has sorted out the problems with PsCS4 - which at the moment is simply unuseable on my rather old and humble system.
On my system, I seem to be able to use Bridge CS4 with PsCS3 without any problems detected so far. I even have things set up such that any JPEG, TIFF or PSD file double clicked within Bridge CS4 or within Windows Explorer (Win XP Pro SP3) automatically opens the file in PsCS3 and not PsCS4 (provided, of course, that PsCS4 is not itself already running). Furthermore, even with PsCS3 running beside Bridge CS4, from within Bridge CS4 I can open any RAW, JPEG or TIFF file in Camera Raw 5.1 and use its new features (Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter, extra vignetting capabilities, etcetera) which were not available in the last release of Camera Raw (4.6 I think) associated with PsCS3. The only problem comes when trying to open edits made in Camera Raw 5.1 in PsCS3 using the "Open Image" button in ACR - it does nothing/won't work, this is, it won't open the image with the ACR adjustments in PsCS3. That's not a big deal for me - as I am currently not doing any work within ACR (any version) and if I needed to I could simply save the ACR edits and then open the files in PsCS4, save the files as PSDs and then open them in PsCS3 to finalise them there.
Has anyone else had a similar experience, or does anyone else know of any reason(s) why I should not continue to use this workflow, at least in the short term?I've been away. Thanks John, Bart and Buko for your responses. Think you misunderstood my post Bart, but it does not matter now. John got the correct message. Buko: of course CS3 cannot use ACR 5.x - that was implicit in my post.

Why not use "new" operator with strings
why we not use new when declaring a String .because in java String are treated as objects. we use new operator for creating an object in java .
and same problem wiht array when we declare array as well as initialize .here we are alse not using new for array
whyStrings aren't just treated as objects, Strings are Objects.
As for why not using new for Strings, you can, if you want.:
String str = "this is a string";
and
String str = new String("this is a string");
do the same thing (nitty-gritty low level details about literals aside). Use whatever you like, but isn't it simpler not to type new String(...) since you still need to type the actual string?
As for arrays, you can use new:
int[] ints = new int[10];
or
int[] ints = { 0, 1, 2, 3, ..., 9 };
But the difference here is you are creating an empty array in the first one, the second creates and fills the array with the specified values. But which to you often depends on what you are doing.
