Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor - recording audio from optical digital in - sound drops

Hi guys
I've had an audigy 2 zs video editor for a couple of months now and it's greatly improved my audio output from my computer.
But the other day I started trying to record vinyl onto my computer directly.
In the past I've always used my hifi cd recorder deck, then ripped the audio off the cd.
So I have my turntable connected to my amp, and I use my minidisc deck as a DAC, then record using an optical from my minidisc DAC, to the optical input on the front of the audigy.
So I fire up the creative smart recorder software and start messing with the levels.
I also use a free bit of software from

called meterV which gives me a larger and more prominent read out of the level.
I then fine tune the output level on my DAC.
I have the stereo line out sockets on my audigy connected to an input on my hifi amplifier for listening to digital music etc.
So I start the vinyl and the sound starts coming through my DAC into my soundcard, the level readings start going, and the sound comes out of my hifi speakers.
My amp's switched to the audigy input - not the turntable
The problem is... every 30 seconds or so, the sound cuts out for 2-3 seconds and then resumes.
But the sound doesn't drop off on the level meters, or on the actual recording (recording 44.khz, 6bit wav file).
Only on the stereo line out of the audigy.
I ran the following test to see if the sound also cut out on the optical and coax outputs...
Whilst recording from the optical input, I've also tried recording to a minidisc portable from the optical out at the same time.
And the sound cuts out the same as when listening to the stereo line outs.
So the sound cuts off on the line out, the optical out, and also the coax out.
But this only happens when recording from the optical input.
When recording from the stereo line in - the sound doesn't cut out on any output!!!
The input selected in creative smart recorder is SPDIF.
This problem happens when smart recorder isn't even running - if I'm just listening to the line outs the sound cuts out.
But if I'm just playing back an MP3 or any sound, and there's nothing coming into the inputs, then playback is fine!!
So it's not a connection issue!
It doesn't seem to be triggered by sound frequencies - it seems to happen every 30-40 seconds no matter what is being recorded (it does the same thing when playing a CD so it's not just when using a turntable)
I've tried restarting the computer several times.
All the connections are properly seated.
I've had task manager loaded whilst this is happening to check CPU usage, and nothing - it just continues in a fairly straight line as normal. No spikes in CPU usage (I would have thought it unlikely that the video editor would be affected by such things anyway being an external box).
There is nothing else connected to USB - other than an internal memory card reader attached to a motherboard USB header.
And a wireless adaptor also connected to the motherboard - but the problem still happens when the wireless adaptor is disabled.
There's also nothing else connected to the USB ports on the Video Editor box.
Machine spec:
Shuttle SN4G2-v3
AMD Athlon XP 3000+
GB memory
80GB IDE HDD, 2 x external Lacie FireWire 250GB dri'ves
LG dual layer dvd/rw/ram
Win XP Pro SP2
I've not upgraded firmware or drivers - just used the installation from the CD.
What confuses me is why this only happens when recording from the optical input, and it affects all outputs but the recording and the level monitor show no trace of the temporary loss in sound!
So the audigy is receiving the sound, but it just drops off the outputs for some reason!
Any ideas?

I've read on other forums (head-fi) that the audigy cards do not run at 44.kHz nati'vely so the sound has to be downsampled.
Is that skipping an artefact of that downsampling process?
Will having that set at 48kHz, but recording to a 44.kHz 6bit wav file theoretically reduce the quality of the recording - compared to having it set at 44.kHz and recording a wav at 44.kHz?
On the SPDIF tab the input sample rate is shown as 44.kHz - as that's what is output by the DAC in my minidisc deck.
But when I changed the sampling rate on the PCI/USB tab, the SPDIF output sampling rate also changed to 48kHz.
This means if I wanted to record from the optical output, whilst also recording to the computer, and that device only supported 44.kHz - I can't do that?
You listed some main reasons to the truth, why Creative SB cards are not very popular on serious use (DAW). I.e. need for resampling. X-Fi's in creation mode are (least said to be) the only ones not resample everything.
There is a setting for "Bit-Accurate-Recording" (digital modes only) --> have you tried if that works on your recordings?

Is it possible to build a sound recorder
with ActionScript? I know that you can
do it with a Flash Media Server. But that

AFIAK not possible without a media server. But you can use
the open source media server "red5". Its free and can do everything
(at least thats what the developers say) the Flash Media Server can
do.

Can I make professional sounding recording with Logic in an untreated room?

I have a small bedroom-recording studio. Since starting with Logic over a year ago I have been amazed at how much you can really do with this program. I would really like to start producing my songs at level that competes with the sound quality of what most people purchase on Itunes and professional albums. However, I don't have the space or money to record and mix in an acoustically treated room. It's my little 10x12 bedroom in California after all, and I also have to keep everything else I own in the same space.
Some people argue that an acoustically treated room is the most important thing in getting a truly great sounding record, BUT my question/argument is that IT IS possible to get a pro recording without elaborate foam set-ups and bass traps, etc. Here are my thoughts and please feel free to agree or disagree and prove me wrong—also note, I am NOT talking about mastering, just getting quality recordings and mixes before the mastering stage (that I would pay a pro to take care of anyway).
I have good monitors for my setup (Event ASP6s and have had a few professional recording artists I know comment on how good they sound). I listen to music all the time on these speakers and know them very well. When I record my own music I frequently A/B my recordings (as I am recording AND mixing) with music from CDs to match the sound quality. I focus on both total recordings and specific instruments when doing this A/B strategy. I also mix at low volume levels.
My thinking is this: If I'm able match (or at least come close to matching) the sound of my instruments and mixes to a commercial recording using my speakers and Logic, then the room should not matter. The speakers are reflecting the sound of a pro recording, regardless of how the room is treated, and I am in turn emulating this sound with my own music. Thus, my music should translate well on other systems, as the pro recordings obviously would do so.
I realize that quality mics, preamps, mixing skills etc. are important for creating a professional, accurate sounding project as well, but the fact that I am unable to record in a properly treated room has always bothered me and I’m not going to be able to change this situation any time soon.
I’m curious about everyone’s opinion on this. This is a great forum and there are a lot of knowledgeable people here. This is the age of the “Home Studio” and most people with home studios don’t have quality rooms, so this is an important subject. Thanks for any feedback.

Jack, I'm in a similar boat here in Seattle. I just finished recording and mixing a few songs for demo'ing purposes and was pretty happy with what I achieved, but let's just say there was a lot of learning involved with the process.
In my limited experience, when you're working in a small untreated boxy room, you're fighting a different big problem at each stage of the recording process. When you're recording, you have to deal with comb filtering and flutter echoes (if you're recording mic'd acoustic instruments), and when mixing room modes and bass-response issues. There are various ways of addressing flutter echo, which boil down to creatively using dispersion and absorption techniques and playing around with mic placement. If you close-mic everything, you can get rid of some but not all flutter problems, but then you have to wrestle with having an exaggerated low end on all of your tracks, and you lose a lot of the open, airy quality of the instruments you're recording.
My "studio" has a couple of large bookcases along one wall, so I typically recorded the guitar in M-S stereo facing the bookcases (to get some dispersion) and set up a couple of homebrewed O-C 703 panels a few feet to each side to kill off the echoes. I also set a panel up on the wall behind me to further dampen things. It seemed to work pretty well. Mixing was a whole 'nother matter. No matter how much I A/B'd I did a bunch of mixes that wound up sounding truly awful when trialled on other systems. I went through a lot of CD-R's before finally winding up with something that wasn't actively cringeworthy (at least in terms of audio quality).
Since your setup is based on an MBP and a portable FW interface, one thing you might try is recording acoustic instruments in a larger room elsewhere in your apartment, or maybe at a friend's. Or maybe rent / borrow a church for a day.

Audigy 2 ZS Output Sound bleeding into input(m

Hi,
I'm having trouble with the Audigy 2 ZS in Windows x64 with
SBA2_WEB64_LB_2_03_0004.exe &
AudCon_PCApp_LB__20_23.exe
installed.
The problem is when sound is being send to the Audigy output port (head phones) it's also being sent to my mic (input port). I can physically disconnect the mic from the Audigy 2 ZS card and I still get a duplicate output into the input port. Even if I mute the mic in the sound control panel.
Example, If I play a MP3 in winamp and start recording using Windows sound recorder, it will record the output prefectly without anything connected to the back of the card.
The real issue is the feedback people are getting when trying to talk to me using Vent or Teamspeak. Anything they say, it echos right back to them.
CMSS on or off doesn't make a difference.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd like to hear them? I'm thinking it might be a bad card but didn't want to send it back until I tried everything.

The problem was with the Sound recording device being "select"ed on the Wave instead of the Microphone. Even though the Microphone was working, it was still also sending the output or the Wave along with it.

IdeaCentre B520 - sound recording too low, sound on Skype too low

Hi
When I speak on Skype or use Sound Recorder to record my voice (using internal microphone), the sound is very low.
I think I have turned up every possible Microphone and Audio setting on the system to its highest.
My IdeaCentre B520 is very new and I haven't installed anything else on it other than Skype.
OS is Windows 7 x64.
I used the Lenovo automatic check for drivers and it said all drivers up to date.
I haven't had a system with an internal microphone before, I literally just talk (loudly) at the monitor, I presume there isn't anything else I need to do?!

This is not good to know that you are encountering the issue with your new desktop.
Please make sure that the Audio driver version is 6.0.1.6294, if it is not then you may download it from the mentioned below web link.

If the version of the driver is same then you can try the settings.
1. Right-click the icon of the speakers icon at the notification area, and then click “Sounds
2. Click the tab “Recording”, and then click “Microphone” à select “Properties”.
3. Select the tab “Listen”, and then check “Listen to this device”. Apply it, and the function will be enabled.

Missing sound recording

I understand that if you (1) copy a region from one GB file, (2) paste it into another GB file, and (3) delete the former file, then (4) the region will become blank in the latter file. I also thought that (4) could be avoided by archiving the latter file before deleting the former file. But I just did that and the region is now blank. So what did I do wrong or what do I still need to do?

No sound recorded on the internal microphone after SoundMAX driver update (Windows XP)

My internal microphone is not picking up sound after I upgraded my SoundMAX driver (available from the Lenovo website here) to version 5.10.1.571.* It looks like this was a problem before and was supposedly fixed in 5.10.1.5520 which is included in the version I have.
I have tested the audio through the Control Panel utility, i.e., Sounds and Audio Devices Properties - Voice - Test hardware. No dice: my voice could not be detected. I also tested via the Windows XP sound recorder utility, i.e., Accessories - Entertainment - Sound Recorder. Same result: silence.
In the Control Panel's Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, I have verified that the Default device for Audio and Voice (playback and recording) all are set to "SoundMAX HD Audio." The SoundMAX software that ships with this laptop (also called "control panel") is very scaled back. There doesn't appear to be anything interesting there to adjust.

Ok So let me give you the specs on my computer first,?Windows xp home editionAbit IN9 32 MAX Mobo2 Gigs corsair xms ram2 8800ultra sli gpusLogitech?z-5300 SpeakersSound blaster audigy 2 zs platinum sound card2 Samsung 500 gig HD?I dont believe that my problem is the same as is in the crackling sound thread. So here is my dilema. Up untill about 4 days ago everything was working fine with my sound system. I have the Logitech speakershooked up to my audigy 2 zs along with my xbox 360 in the optical in on the front plate. So like i said about 4 days ago i started playing a movie on my computer and i have the ac3 codec installed on my computer with comunity codec pack and i know that you could say that those 2 things could be my problem i know enough to know that that probably isnt. So when i played the movie and when to the ac3 codec and turned on dolby decoding so that i would decode it to all my speakers everything worked fine. Then when i turned on spdif decoding my center speaker?started to crackle so i figured it was just becuase i was useing spdif and dolby decoding at the same time. so i turned that off and then went to go play my xbox 360 in which i have pluged into the optical in part on the front plate. Everything had always worked fine for that i have dolby digital decodeing on for the audigy. So i started to play a game i realized that i center speaker was crackling on there too. So i started to realize that no matter what i did the center speaker was crackling. I even changed out the center and sub stereo jack on the card for the front left and right and then they started to crackle in that spot. So i dont know what the hell is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated i was thinking of restoring my computer but i dont know whether that is necessary. I also dont want to have to go out and by the x-fi elite pro tomarrow unless I absolutely have to.Message Edited by TasteOfChaos on 0-0-20080:02 PM

I am brand new to this message system but I am so desperate for help I thought I would try it. After reading lots of comments I find that my problem may be more the rule than the exception. I have an Audigy @ Platinum card and all I ever get from it is crackling and popping. I have been around and around with Creative support but nothing they tell me results in a fix. I am so disgusted at this point that I am ready to just trash the whole thing. I have gone through the BIOS and checked so many settings its a shame. Still crackling and popping. I NEED SPECIFIC ANSWERS FROM SOMEBODY...not just the generic flip the wingle wangle to port xyz and move this to that. here has got to be an answer to this maddening problem. The other thing is that now I can't get my MIDI keyboard to play back. I must have turned something off in the set up process but now I have no idea what to do.
If anyone has any solid answers for me PLEASE come forward with them before I kill someone!

According to my analysis, for Digital Signatures: Adobe has changed the behavior around digital signatures and SharePoint-hosted PDF files. Now, when digitally signing a SharePoint-hosted PDF file, it will be saved directly to SharePoint if that PDF file
is already checked out. If not, the user will be prompted to check it out. When digitally signing a SharePoint-hosted PDF file in Acrobat X, Version 10.0, the user would be prompted to save that file locally and would then need to upload it separately to SharePoint
as a new version.

Sound Recorder activated automatically in WhatsApp

I was very suprised when recently a friend of mein noted that he has received a 22 minute voice recording message over WhatsApp. I found out that the integrated Sound Recorder had recorded a message acitivating and sending it out without my knowledge. Is there any kind of shortcut or combination of buttons on my Mobile or Whatsapp itself that could activate the Sound Recorder without me doing this on purpose? Normally it takes at least four clicks zu start the recording of the Sound Recorder in WhatsApp: Attachment / Audio / Soundrecorder / Start Recording

Sounds strange. Haven't used whatsapp myself so I'm not fully sure how the app works, but if you have the sound recording key active on the keyboard you're using you might have accidentally pressed it and recorded a message.

Sound recorder playback volume low ?

I have a dv6000 notebook , for the first time ever I tried recording sound using windows movie maker to add ''narration'' but the playback volume is very low .
I tried the windows '' sound recorder '' and got the same result .
I've been through all the standard adjustments and settings and have gone into ' control panel ' and adjusted 'levels' and everything else with no success .
When I record a video using the sound on my camera the volume is fine - it's just the mic sound that is low whether I use an external mic or the built in ones .

I have the same issue and I see no responses to your inquiry.. This Windows help menu leaves much to be desired. Im sure I will one day figure out how to work this version that I had no clue I was buying bc it should come with a warning label.. its completely different and agonizing and great help menu lovely.. Im sorry to be so negative wish I could help.. Ill sit here all night till I figure it out and then post an option on how to adjust the recording volume.. Unreal..

Look at the JavaSound Demo (http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/sound/samples/JavaSoundDemo/)
You must run it as a standalone app (java -jar JavaSoundDemo.jar) or modify your policy files, and thats tedious.
In the app, there are several tabs and select the one of capture / playback.
