Audio capture delayed with Java Sound and JWS

Hi.
I am experiencing quite a strange problem with Java Sound in my Java Web Start application. I am acquiring sound from the microphone through Java Sound, using a code which looks like this:
==============================
AudioFormat audioFormat = new AudioFormat(11025, 8, 1, true, false);
// Get a TargetDataLine from the appropriate mixer
DataLine.Info dataLineInfo = new DataLine.Info(TargetDataLine.class, audioFormat);
TargetDataLine targetDataLine = (TargetDataLine) AudioSystem.getLine(dataLineInfo);
// Prepare the line for use
targetDataLine.open(audioFormat);
targetDataLine.start();
targetDataLine.addLineListener(myLineListener);
// Build an input stream from the line
AudioInputStream audioInStream = new AudioInputStream(targetDataLine);
// Create the output file
File outputFile = new File("C:\\MySampleAudioFile.wav");
// Start the actual audio file-writing operation
AudioFileFormat.Type targetFileFormatType = AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE;
AudioSystem.write(audioInStream, targetFileFormatType, outputFile);
==============================
This code is executed in an independent thread. As you can see from the code reported above, I add a LineListener to my TargetDataLine.
The problem is that in my JWS application several seconds (about 5-6 seconds) elapse from the call to AudioSystem.write() and the reception of the START LineEvent on my LineListener. This delay only occurs when my JWS application is downloaded from my public internet website, while it is not present when I test my JWS application on my local LAN server.
It looks like the call to AudioSystem.write() causes some kind of network connection to the remote web server of the JWS app, and this operation takes some time. In fact, if I download my JWS app to my client from the public web server, then I disable all network connections on my client, then the START event is received immediately after the call to AudioSystem.write()... This is STRANGE, isn't it???
Do you believe the call to AudioSystem.write(), or any other Java Sound call, may cause a network connection to the server from which the JWS application has been downloaded?
A final addition to the above picture: I also have a "Java Applet" version of this application, which is exactly identical to the JWS version and uses the same exact code to do audio acquisition from the microphone. But, in this case the delay is not present, even when running the applet from the public web server!
Any help / suggestion would be highly appreciated.
Best regards,
Marco.

  • Does anyone know of a mini sterio with surround sound and optical input in Mac Mini form factor?

    Does anyone know of a mini sterio with surround sound and optical input in Mac Mini form factor?
    I use a Mini as the family media center and would like to have 5.1 or 7.1 sound for films but don't want a huge piece of eletronic equipment (I have one of those, but it isn't hooked up because it doesn't fit on the bookshelf). Years ago I used a PC and still use the Creative Audigy speaker system (Jimmy rigged to the Mini) that I ran from the PC. The Audigy PCI sound card obviously doesn't work on the Mini, so I just have two chanel plus sub. That has been fine since I switched to the Mini in 2007, but am updating to a new Mini in the summer and would like to upgrade my sound as well.
    I also wouldn't be opposed to a USB soundcard that can drive the speakers. In fact, my wife would prefer smaller and less visible, ergo USB card hidden in the back.
    Suggestions?

    Hello John, I figured it was a signal issue. All the speakers fire and the sound is great. I was running the speakers thru a Dell PC with a Creative X-Fi Elite Pro, THX Certified, 7.1 soundcard using a fiber optic from the Mac Pro to the Z906's, it worked great until the Dell died!!! When I bought the soundcard from Creative I also bought the GigaWorks S750, THX Certified, 700 watt, 7.1 speaker system, used the speakers for 11 years and then the woofer/amp said "I QUIT" Creative quit making the speaker system and the sound card. The satellite speakers from the Creative GigaWorks speaker system still sound great (rated at 78 watt each) and are a little better speaker than the one's that came with the Z906 and the wattage from the 906 is sufficient to drive the satellites without any distortion. Thank you for addressing my issue, you confirmed what I suspected all along, just needed to hear it from someone with the same setup.
    One last question, I purchased a Diamond Multimedia USB Soundcard, can't use the fiber optic(not supported by Mac) but the green, tan and black RCA's plug in and produces adequetly. When you plug your 906's into the Mac Pro using the fiber optic how do you set your speaker configuration? When I plug into the mac pro with fiber optic the 'Audio Midi Setup' does not seem to see the 5.1 configuration. Any thoughts there?

  • Reports of 17.0.0.169 with garbled sound and vid on rtmp streaming w/jwplayer?

    Hello Adobe,
    I run a website that uses live streaming rtmp to the jwplayer6 video player.  Starting today, some viewers who downloaded Adobe Flash player 17.0.0.169 are getting very garbled sound and video that speeds up/slows down.  This is happening on a number of users on various platforms: Win 7, Win 8.1, Linux and various browsers; Firefox, Safari, Opera, and IE (reported so far).  Some folks are reporting it happens only on Firefox and not Chrome.  Thoughts?  How to proceed?  We are telling our users, unfortunately, uninstall the latest version of Flash and rollback.

    Hi Jeromie,
    I'm and end user getting disastrous garbling and speeding via Ustream Streams.One broadcaster I watch was able to almost elimate the issue by reducing the quality of the outgoing content I believe.  It would be beneficial if you contacted Ustream yourself so they can notify their subscribers of a work around.

    Hi Simon,
    I'm really sorry to hear that your event may be impacted.  I'd highly recommend that you reach out to Ustream.  We would be more than happy to share technical details with them on how to configure the streams to work around the issue.  We will have a public beta available for download before your event at http://www.adobe.com/go/flashplayerbeta/, but realize that this is a sub-optimal solution.
    Ustream employees can send me a private message via the forums (just click my name), and I'll be more than happy to put them in contact with an engineer that can offer guidance.
    Thanks,
    Jeromie

    Ars ther any significant changes to set roles in 11g?When I eval'd 11g, I did not notice any changes in setting my roles. I did notice a significant difference in Java. I cannot remember the JDK version change from 10g to 11g. We ended up settling back to 10g for other reasons.

  • Capturing audio through applet using Java Sound

    hi fellows i need ur help.
    I am working on a voice project to Capture & Play the sound using java sound API instead of JMF. I can capture , play and transmit the sound through application. It works pretty fine but when i convert it to the applet, it is not working.
    I got the full system permissions and also signed the applet for Internet Explorer. Also i packed the
    javax.sound.midi.*
    javax.sound.sampled.*
    classes in the signed cab.
    After doing all this i am getting the AudioFormat not supported exception. I changed the format and used all the combinations but still getting this error

  • Problem with Java 5 and Oracle 10g JDBC driver

    Hi All,
    Currently we upgrade our web application to Java 5 and Oracle 10.2 JDBC driver. And we encountered a bug, when the user entered the information through UI and data didn't store into database (Oracle 9i). The problem is that this bug is not happend so often maybe once a day and this did not happen before we upgraded to Java 5 and Oracle 10.2 JDBC driver. Does anyone encounter the same problem ? Is this Java 5 problem or Oracle JDBC driver problem ?
    Thanks,

    sounds like a database problem...
    Are you using a driver version that's supported for your database engine?
    What else did you change? We once ran into a major bug in our application that had for 5 years been masked by performance problems in our hardware and infrastructure.
    Once those were resolved the bug showed itself and caused tens of thousands of records to be erroneously inserted into our database every day.
    It's certainly NOT a problem with your JVM (if it's a decent one, like the Sun implementation).
    So it's either your database, your driver, your network (dropping packets???), or your application.
    The upgrade may just have exposed something that was already there.

  • How to record sound with Java Sound?

    I just want to record a clip of sound and save it to a WAV file. I exhausted the web but didn't find a tutorial. Would someone be kind enough to give me a tutorial or a sample code? The simpler the better. Thanks.

    Here's the code I used to record and play sound. Hope the length do not confound you.
    import javax.sound.sampled.*;
    import java.io.*;
    // The audio format you want to record/play
    AudioFormat.Encoding encoding = AudioFormat.Encoding.PCM_SIGNED;
    int sampleRate = 44100;
    byte sampleSizeInBits = 16;
    int channels = 2;
    int frameSize = 4;
    int frameRate = 44100;
    boolean bigEndian = false;
    int bytesPerSecond = frameSize * frameRate;
    AudioFormat format = new AudioFormat(encoding, sampleRate, sampleSizeInBits, channels, frameSize, frameRate, bigEndian);
    //TO RECORD:
    //Get the line for recording
    try {
      targetLine = AudioSystem.getTargetDataLine(format);
    catch (LineUnavailableException e) {
      showMessage("Unable to get a recording line");
    // The formula might be a bit hard :)
    float timeQuantum = 0.1F;
    int bufferQuantum = frameSize * (int)(frameRate * timeQuantum);
    float maxTime = 10F;
    int maxQuantums = (int)(maxTime / timeQuantum);
    int bufferCapacity = bufferQuantum * maxQuantums;
    byte[] buffer = new byte[bufferCapacity]; // the array to hold the recorded sound
    int bufferLength = 0;
    //The following has to repeated every time you record a new piece of sound
    targetLine.open(format);
    targetLine.start();
    AudioInputStream in = new AudioInputStream(targetLine);
    bufferLength = 0;
    for (int i = 0; i < maxQuantums; i++) { //record up to bufferQuantum * maxQuantums bytes
      int len = in.read(buffer, bufferQuantum * i, bufferQuantum);
      if (len < bufferQuantum) break; // the recording may be interrupted
      bufferLength += len;
    targetLine.stop();
    targetLine.close();
    //Save the recorded sound into a file
    AudioInputStream stream = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(new ByteArrayInputStream(buffer, 0, bufferLength));
    AudioFileFormat.Type fileType = AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE;
    File file = new File(...); // your file name
    AudioSystem.write(stream, fileType, file);
    //TO PLAY:
    //Get the line for playing
    try {
      sourceLine = AudioSystem.getSourceDataLine(format);
    catch (LineUnavailableException e) {
      showMessage("Unable to get a playback line");
    //The following has to repeated every time you play a new piece of sound
    sourceLine.open(format);
    sourceLine.start();
    int quantums = bufferLength / bufferQuantum;
    for (int i = 0; i < quantums; i++) {
      sourceLine.write(buffer, bufferQuantum * i, bufferQuantum);
    sourceLine.drain(); //Drain the line to make sure all the sound you feed it is played
    sourceLine.stop();
    sourceLine.close();
    //Or, if you want to play a file:
    File audioFile = new File(...);//
    AudioInputStream in = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(audioFile);
    sourceDataLine.open(format);
    sourceDataLine.start();
    while(true) {
      if(in.read(buffer,0,bufferQuantum) == -1) break; // read a bit of sound from the file
      sourceDataLine.write(buffer,0,buffer.length); // and play it
    sourceDataLine.drain();
    sourceDataLine.stop();
    sourceDataLine.close();You may also do this to record sound directly into a file:
    targetLine.open(format);
    targetLine.start();
    AudioInputStream in = new AudioInputStream(targetLine);
    AudioFileFormat.Type fileType = AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE;
    File file = new File(...); // your file name
    new Thread() {public void run() {AudioSystem.write(stream, fileType, file);}}.start(); //Run this in a separate thread
    //When you want to stop recording, run the following: (usually triggered by a button or sth)
    targetLine.stop();
    targetLine.close();Edited by: Maigo on Jun 26, 2008 7:44 AM

  • Audio gets delayed with Plugin - Help please!

    I have a simple setup. Several external MIDI modules and an M-Audio Audiophile 192 PCI card in the G5. MIDI synth audio is mixed with the 192 audio externally on an analogue mixer.
    All is well until I add a Linear Phase EQ plugin into the Main audio output in LP. Suddenly all the Audio is delayed slightly compared with the MIDI! If I bypass the plugin it's fine again. I thought there was a setting somewhere to compensate for this but darned if I can find it. Anyone?
    I'm using LP 7.2

    Go to Preferences ->Audio...->General
    There you can change settings for Plug-in delay compensation.
    If you want to play live, use Chanel EQ instead.
    Also don't use the AdLimiter live.

  • Audio problem only with some application and with games

    Hi,
    Some days my ipad2 presents this problem: audio is ok with itunes and when I look a video on youtube but it not work when I use some app (for example, Sky Go, app for cinema to look trailer) or with games.
    What should I do?
    Thanks

    If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
    System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
    Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
    If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
    If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
    If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
    This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Problem with java, ASCII and Linux

    Hi Friends,
    I has a Linux RedHat 9.0 with a jre1.5.0_04 (rpm package of Sun).
    I has a problem with ASCII , for example :
    import java.io.*;
    public class HolaMundo
    public static void main (String[] args)
    System.out.println("Hol Mndo");
    this programs runs ok on my windows jdk so it prints "Hol Mndo", but when i run the same HolaMundo.class program on my linux redhat it prints "Hol Mndo"
    I think the problem is with the ASCII table that uses the linux version of jre, but i dont know how to solve this problem. I need a Spanish-European ASCII table on my application but i think it is working with a US-ASCII table.
    Then i has installed a kaffe 1.0 (rpm) java machie on this linux and this solve the problem but i has another problems of compatibility with this old version of java kaffe.
    Do you know whats happening?
    Thanks in advance.

    The problem doesn't have to do anything with Java or Linux as far as i can see. It's more likely a problem with Windows XP and IE. Be assured that normally downloading the Linux JDK in windows is not a problem.

  • Spotlight starts indexing after every restart and there is a scrolling delay with both mouse and track pad.

    I had to restart my MBP three time, two after it crashed. Every time Spotlight starts to index the content on my Mac
    which takes two hour. Then there is a delay when I start scrolling, both with the mouse and with the track pad.
    I also notised that after changing the icons with Candybar they still appear unchanged in Launchpad, which makes
    it confusing. Launchpad isn't consitent when putting the apps in aphabetic order, but jumble up some of the apps.
    i don't get back the wab sites after restart as i was to believe I would.
    As Jobs sez; And more thing.
    Well one more might OK, there are more bugs then that, but I to tired to tell them all.
    I have never found so many bug in such a short time (only in two hours with Lion now) with any other OS and I have worked with Macs since -91.
    God help us.

    Hi, me again, more data.
    I have found that some plugins are accessing the internet without my permission.
    And when I went into the plug in menu via the addons options through the Tool Menu option, I found the plug ins there.
    BUT I never installed those plugins, and now they are there and they are accessing the Internet. Here are two images to show the plug ins disabled and yet another image showing them still accessing the Internet even when disabled.
    I then removed them from the system (I did back them up first, just in case).
