Audio Input on Dell Mini 10v
The audio input on my Dell Mini 10v doesn't work. These seems to be a known problem - in Ubuntu, they applied a patch to get it working in Karmic: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/394793
I confirmed by booting Ubuntu from USB that audio is working.
Does anyone know how I can get this to work in Arch? This stuff is really over my head. The input device shows up in alsa, but not audio is there. This patch is needed to set the input level apparently.
Thanks!
Bump - someone must be able to point me in the right direction, I know there's a lot of smart kernel type people around here . . .

Wireless problems on Dell Mini 10v
The computer is a Dell Mini 10v.
I've followed the wiki post on the 10v, but it is out of date as the kernel does provide support for the Broadcom 4312. Installing broadcom_wl is not necessary.

I've been getting crazy errors that seem to be related to my inability to properly configure wpa_supplicant. My system does connect to wpa and wpa2 encrypted connections from boot, but I'm unable to connect to them manually without getting.

Well thats it i have made the move and i am now a proud owner of a new mac mini but i have a problem i cant to connect my four track recorder to my mac so as i can record all my music to disk, is there a way around this maybe somekind of usb conector, grrr i'd hate to get rid of my mac just for that reason but its really important to me.
Oh and are there any good free anti virus programs out there for mac....connect my four track recorder to my mac so
as i can record all my music to disk, is there a way

Yes, there are many products you would buy. Some connect
to the USB others to the Firewire ports. the low end starts at $30 for an "iMic" but if you want professional quality
audio and it sound like yu might if you own a four track mixer then you'd be looking at spending about what you'd expect to spend for another piece of professional audio gear. Actually it's not that bad. $170 will get you a quality audio device with XLR inputs and all that conects the firewire. There guys have a good selection of gear www.m-audio.com
As for anti-virus software. First you need to find a virus. So for there ain't none. So while there are a lot of companies trying to take your money and will sell you software the stack of virus profiles that the software uses is pretty thin. The trick with Mac OS X is to make a logon account for yourself that is NOT an administraitor account and use that account for day to day use. The normal protection offered by non-admin acount will keep you pretty safe
grrr i'd
hate to get rid of my mac just for that reason but
its really important to me.

Dell mini 10v Issue during install process.
When I attempt to build the b43 firmware from makepkg, it says "==> ERROR: Cannot fing the strip binary required for object file stripping." Please keep in mind that I am using the install usb because I can't connect to the internet. The fwcutter is installed as well. Thank you for reading.
The live media unfortunately does not include all of base-devel. You need the binutils package, which has /usr/bin/strip. The live media is really meant to be used with internet access, but I see your dilemma here.
You obviously have internet access on something though, so why not download the package itself (or look in /var/cache/pacman/pkg if you installed base-devel on the on-disk system) and install it into the live media with pacman -U. -
I have a Dell Mini 10V which has the dreaded Poulsbo aka Intel GMA500 chipset. I have been running the latest drivers with no issues for normal operation. I decided to try the HDMI output and found that it causes the screen of the mini to go to a terminal window (crashed Openbox) and flickers where the screen can not be read. The only recovery that I have found is a hard reboot.
I wanted to know if anyone has successfully connected a TV or monitor to their Dell Mini? What happens if you put the 4GB (2X2GB) back in? I'm thinking since the video adapter uses hardware RAM, that the new RAM is causing the issue. Just a hunch.

Digital audio input via mini jack/toslink from ADA converter, monitored via USB audio output to amplifier... is this do-able? I know digital audio input should be okay but how do I monitor it, apart from using the internal speakers?
You can output audio thru HDMI, with appropriate adapter.
You can use additional cheap external usb audio for monitoring. -
It says that the mac mini has "optical digital audio input/audio line in" (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=br owse&mco=9BF2D40D&node=home/desktop/mac_mini), but i've tried two microphones now and neither work.
Both work fine on my PC.
I've checked the audio in volume and it's turned up to max.
How do I get audio input to work on my mac? Do I have to buy an apadter? It says in the specs that it supports both analog AND digital input...
latest intel modelWelcome to Apple Discussions!
As an alternative to a pre-amp to bring the mic up to a compatible line-level signal, you might want to look at something like a Griffin iMic (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/) which would resolve the problem via USB. -
Mac Mini USB Webcam Audio Input
I purchased a Mac Mini a couple of months ago and set it up with HDMI to HDMI connection to my Samsung TV. I then purchased a Logitech webcam V-UBU48 and connected that to the USB on the Mac Mini. All was fine and I used Skype on this combination with no problems for a couple of weeks, using the webcam as both Audio and Video input device. Sound output was via the TV.
I then went on leave for a couple of weeks and on return set everything up again as it had been before. This time there is no audio input from the webcam and changing settings in Skype preferences or Midi utility does not seem to have any effect, The webcam is recognised as "Unknown USB Audio Device", but doesnt seem to work. So far as the Mac is concerned the video side recognises it as a Logitech Webcam and still works perfectly. Sound output via the TV is also still fine.
Since my return the only change that I can identify is the latest Snow Leopard upgrade to 10.6.4
The other issue is the volume control on the bar at the top of the screen is grayed out and does not function any longer.
Can anyone help identify the issue here. Thanks in advanceThanks for the suggestions. A few hours after posting my issue I switched everything on and all was as before. I could control the audio input level in system preferences and use the webcam for skype calls as before, using it as the audio and video input device.
Now I have swithched the machine on again and it seems to have reverted back to the same problem as described in my original posting......very frustrating. Nothing registering on the sound input levels in system preferences. Tried restarting several times without success.
The Midi settings for the "Unknown USB Audio Device" i.e. Webcam are as follows:
Source Default (Grayed out)
Format 48000 Hz 1 ch 16 bit
M Channel volume slider is at the mid point, Value 0.49, dB 18.28, Mute and Thru both unchecked
I Channel slider grayed out and all else blank.
Since everything started working again I haven't touched these settings so I assume that they are the same with or without the issue.
I know issues that occur randomly such as this are least likely to find a solution but further suggestions welcome. -
How can the optical digital audio input be enabled on the 2011 Mac mini?
I am trying to record signals output from my audio receiver's digital SPDIF output. I have a TOSLINK optical cable between the receiver's output and my MAC mini's audio input (via the TOSLINK to 3.5mm optical adapter). Does this digital optical input need to be enabled through the OS?
Also, make sure it is showing up in System Preferences->Sound->
Input as optical.
Also, make sure it is plugged ALL the way in. I know on
my 2011 Mini, even with just analog plugs, it is a very
snug fit and often it feels like I have pushed in all the way
when in fact it isn't and needs an addition pretty firm push. -
Does anyone know of a mini sterio with surround sound and optical input in Mac Mini form factor?
I use a Mini as the family media center and would like to have 5.1 or 7.1 sound for films but don't want a huge piece of eletronic equipment (I have one of those, but it isn't hooked up because it doesn't fit on the bookshelf). Years ago I used a PC and still use the Creative Audigy speaker system (Jimmy rigged to the Mini) that I ran from the PC. The Audigy PCI sound card obviously doesn't work on the Mini, so I just have two chanel plus sub. That has been fine since I switched to the Mini in 2007, but am updating to a new Mini in the summer and would like to upgrade my sound as well.
I also wouldn't be opposed to a USB soundcard that can drive the speakers. In fact, my wife would prefer smaller and less visible, ergo USB card hidden in the back.
Suggestions?Hello John, I figured it was a signal issue. All the speakers fire and the sound is great. I was running the speakers thru a Dell PC with a Creative X-Fi Elite Pro, THX Certified, 7.1 soundcard using a fiber optic from the Mac Pro to the Z906's, it worked great until the Dell died!!! When I bought the soundcard from Creative I also bought the GigaWorks S750, THX Certified, 700 watt, 7.1 speaker system, used the speakers for 11 years and then the woofer/amp said "I QUIT" Creative quit making the speaker system and the sound card. The satellite speakers from the Creative GigaWorks speaker system still sound great (rated at 78 watt each) and are a little better speaker than the one's that came with the Z906 and the wattage from the 906 is sufficient to drive the satellites without any distortion. Thank you for addressing my issue, you confirmed what I suspected all along, just needed to hear it from someone with the same setup.
One last question, I purchased a Diamond Multimedia USB Soundcard, can't use the fiber optic(not supported by Mac) but the green, tan and black RCA's plug in and produces adequetly. When you plug your 906's into the Mac Pro using the fiber optic how do you set your speaker configuration? When I plug into the mac pro with fiber optic the 'Audio Midi Setup' does not seem to see the 5.1 configuration. Any thoughts there?

Combined audio & video from iMac mini DVI & headphone ports to HDMI to TV
I presently have my iMac connected to my Sony Bravia tv so that the video goes from the mini DVI port through a converter to HDMI to a 25 foot cable, a HDMI coupler and another 25 foot cable to the TV. The video quality is good since I use 24 AWG cables. The audio goes from the headphone port through a 50 foot 3.5 mm cable to a converter to RCA stereo cables to the tv. The audio quality is not very good with this setup and I would like to send the audio over the HDMI cable with the video so that I would have only a single cable over the 50 foot run and could use a HDMI wall plate for a neater installation. I am wondering whether anyone has tried this somewhat expensive solution to my kind of problem, and whether it worked. Atlona DVI + Digital Audio to HDMI Converter. Model: AT-DVID-HDMI
Not sure if it would work. The audio input is described as +audio (SPDIF) input+ which is not analog or the Toslink optical digital. SPDIF is a digital format, so you would need another converter. And since the video input is full DVI, you'd need a different adapter for the iMac's video output.
Considering the complexity, additional adapters, rather long travel length, and $199 price for the Atlona device, depending on what you want to show on the HDTV, you may want to consider an Apple TV. The older 40GB version is $149 at the Apple +Special Deals+ page. You can then stream your content wirelessly, and not have to worry about any cabling. But obviously, an Apple TV does not stream everything that that iMac can play, so it would only work if what you want to show is stuff you can play in iTunes. Plus you may want to see what Apple introduces at the 1/27 special event.
The iMac's audio output port doubles as an optical digital port, with a Toslink adapter, so if the Sony Bravia has optical digital input, you may be able to run a Toslink cable. I believe 50 feet is too long, so you would need some type repeater at the midway point. -
Crashing when I try to specify audio input
Hey all. My name is William.
I am having trouble with Premiere. I started using it a few days ago and it is working great; however, I now want to record a voice-over. I haven't recorded audio in Premiere before, so I searched the help database. It told me I would need to specify the audio input, which sounded reasonable to me, so I went into Settings -> Audio Hardware and selected "Built in input/Built-in output" and it had the spinning wheel of death for a few moments (I'm on a Mac) and then crashed. I had turned off my error dialog boxes before due to a previous problem with Photoshop frequently thinking it had crashed when in fact I had quit it, so I have no way to report the problem other than here.
I have also tried setting the option to "System default input/output" and it still crashes.

I have trashed my preferences (hold down option right?) What's clearing the media cache? My mac mini is early 2010, 2.26 ghz intel core 2 duo, 4gb 1067 mhz ddr3 ram. Currently on 10.6.2 but am updating to 10.6.4 as I speak.
You can clear your preferences by holding down a modifer (I want to say shift-alt) when launching Premiere Pro or you can do this http://blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/2009/11/having_weird_behavior_with_an.html
As for media cache - you'll find it in your preferences.
your system should run Premiere Pro fine, but it won't fly as you can probably imagine. Let me know how you make out.

Audio Inputs no longer work after upgrade to 10.4.10
Anyone else having trouble with audio inputs after upgrading to 10.4.10? Here's my deal:
MacPro dual 2.66, 4GB RAM, running 10.4.10 as of this morning.
Upgraded to 10.4.10 today and the mic on my Plantronics USB headset quit working. 'Phones still work. Here's what I did:
1. Tried multiple audio input devices. None work.
2. Tried all USB ports, problem persists.
3. Tried the 1/8" audio input, problem persists.
4. Zapped PRAM, problem persists.
5. Called AppleCare and they had me do an Archive and Install on the system software, which installed 10.4.7 and the problem went away. Then, at their suggestion, I let Software Update reinstall 10.4.10 and the problem came back.
6. Rebooted the system from a 2nd internal drive running 10.4.9 and the problem went away.
Seems pretty clear to me that this issue is with the OS, yet Apple's support staff insists the problem is "with the data on my boot drive". Thing is, the data on the "problem" boot drive consists of exactly the same applications on the other drives, and only those applications. There ** is no ** data on the boot drive other than the OS and some applications. Yet the other drive I can boot from that runs 10.4.9 and doesn't cause audio input issues contains all sorts of junk.
So, to reiterate, I'm booting from a clean boot drive with nothing but OS 10.4.10 and some pro applications on it and the audio input won't work. I boot from into any other Mac OS on this drive or any other and all is well. Yet this problem is supposedly with my data?
Is anyone else out there seeing issues like this?I used a UVC-compliant USB Logitech camera (the
Fusion) driverless
under OS X 10.4.9.
FWIW, none of these devices are actually driverless. They rely on drivers either supplied separately by some company (not necessarily the vendor of the product) or bundled into the OS. Usually, the bundled drivers are based on open standards like UVC mentioned in the link. Apple writes a lot of the bundled driver code itself but some of it comes from outside sources like LSI or Intel.
An unfortunate fact of life is that open standards are not always as well defined as they ideally should be. Another is that certain companies sometimes set their own standards that aren't quite compatible with open ones, sometimes to implement real or imagined improvements on an open standard, sometimes to gain a marketing advantage.
The good news is that the market usually -- eventually -- favors the open standard. The bad news is that it often takes some time for this to happen, leaving users -- particularly Mac users, who still represent a smaller market force than those using Windows -- without a solution for an uncomfortably long period of time.
Your best or only recourse for now may be to downgrade to 10.4.9 until this gets resolved, but you should also take into account that not all users are having these problems so it may be something other than the update itself that is causing the problem. I just video chatted with a colleague using an Intel Mac mini who is having no problems whatsoever -- we are both puzzled why he is unaffected while others are.
Sorry this couldn't be of more help. -
Why doesn't my audio input work?
I have a Macbook with OS X and have never been able to get an external microphone to produce sound on the computer. I was using an old pair of headphones but the brand new pair I bought also do not produce any sound. They are the basic headphones with a mic attached and plug into the Macbook using two mini-plugs in the two audio ports (one for input, one for output). I can hear sounds in the headphones just fine. But I'm only able to talk if I use the internal microphone on the Macbook, which is inconvenient as it picks up too much background noise. I'd rather use the external mic.
When I got into my preferences > sound > input, there are two choices there:
Internal microphone -- type: Built-In
Line In -- type: Audio Line-in Port
I select the second option and nothing works. Am I missing something here?Well, FWIW, I did a lot of searching on here and it seems that this type of basic, unpowered mic will not work with my Macbook Pro (OS 10.7.5) and that any audio input has to be powered in some way -- a cd player for example that provides a powered signal into a pair of headphones or into the computer. I bought one of those very basic $15 headsets with microphone from Wal-Mart. Two different brands failed to produce any sound. (though the sound OUTPUT to the headphones works just fine)
Oddly enough, I did call Apple Tech Support and they were confused and unaware of why the headset' mic shouldn't work just fine. So apparently, this is not a "known" issue. So I'm just going to pay a little more and go buy a Bluetooth or USB headset. -
I am wanting to use regular audio speakers with traditional audio input jacks to serve as output speakers on my Macbook Pro Retina display laptop. What type of cable would I need to connect?
