Audio pops/clicks when using external speakers

Here's the problem -- When my Mac plays a sound and it had not played any sounds for a while, it always pops (or clicks, same thing, just a matter of magnitude). There is no pop if there was sound recently, like in the last 3 minutes or so.
My iMac is an aluminum 20" model purchased in May 2008. I have external speakers playing audio. I don't think the pop happens when it's just the internal speakers.
Is there an audio driver update? The Software Update menu doesn't find anything newer to install for me. The pop is very irritating and I consider this Mac to be broken with respect to audio output.

Finally, a workaround. From another thread I learned that this is an old issue. The Mac shuts off the audio output electronics after some period of inactivity. When it reactivates, an audible pop happens. It's an old issue that Apple for some stupid reason doesn't care to solve. For a company that espouses fluid, integrated user experience, it is incredible that Apple could allow such a glaring audio defect to persist through so many generations of products. Surely they must realize many users will be connecting external amplified speaker systems to the analog audio out port. Doesn't anyone at Apple test the computers against the variety of input loads the audio output circuitry will be interfaced to? I understand that Apple has no control over the variety input impedances and DC biases their audio output electronics will see. But I think the popping could be avoided if they just employed a simpler scheme where the audio electronics do shut off. They are too smart for their own good.
That said, the hack that is so far working for me is this freeware utility KeepSoundAwake that plays an inaudible sound periodically. I would much rather see a solution in the firmware.

  • When using external speakers, they won't unmute

I am using a U530 Touch with Realtek HD Audio driver version 6.0.1.7535 and Windows 10 build 10240. When using external speakers, everything works fine, except when I mute speakers they will not unmute without unplugging the 3.5 mm speaker jack and plugging it back in to the unit. Using the laptop's internal speakers does not produce the same proplem (mute/unmute works fine). I have looked at every setting and find nothing, nor have I seen this problem reported in the forums. HELP!!!

Firstly how do I know if this is a 1st or 2nd generation shuffle? Bought in May at Palo Alto Store but there doesn't seem to be anything on the packaging to tell me.
1st Gen shuffle was white, plastic, and shaped like a chewing gum package.
2nd Gen shuffle is aluminum, with a spring clip on the back and comes in silve and assorted colors...
When the shuffle is connected to the external speakers(bought at the same
time) it only plays about 5 songs and then stops.
Does it play through the earphones after this happens? Does it still have power or is the battery depleted after it stops playing?
What Brand & model are the speakers?

  • Audio pops/clicks when changing angles in multicam clips

I am having problems with audio pops/clicks when working with angle switching in multicam clips. it always occurs when i utilize any of the "audio enhancements" features, such as the loudness or background noise removal features. Switching angles results in audible audio pops. The only way to get rid of them is to disable the audio enhancements. This occurs regardless of the audio source. Is this a known bug that is being addressed? I rely heavily on the audio editing features in my work and am hoping this will be resolved in an update soon. Thanks for any help-

Hi Brad, thanks for the reply!
That sounds like a good workaround. What I have been doing in the meantime is create a new compound clip after I finish all of my cuts, and then apply the audio edits to the new contiguous audio clip in the compound clip.
What is really strange and frustrating is that all of my new audio bugginess really began when I could no longer detach audio from my multicam clips in 10.0.9... After doing many searches here, it seems that in this most recent update of FCPX this is no longer a 'feature'... I don't know why they changed this, but in older updates of FCPX you could detach audio from original clips, compound clips, or multicam clips with no problems. I would routinely create and edit all of the angle cuts in my multicam clips in the timeline, and then if I wanted to, be able to detach the audio and do more edits if needed. Thankfully I can still apply edits to compound audio clips, but it would sure be nice if I could just correct/enhance audio without ugly-sounding artifacts in multicam edits. Thanks again-

  • Macbook Chirps and clicks when using external monitor

My mid 2010 Macbook Pro makes chirping and clicking noises from the hard drive however it only happens when I have my external monitor hooked up. Any one have any idea why? It is different from the Motion sensor click. I've found all over the net that others are experiancing this issue (not connected to external monitor) however haven't I haven't seen a conclusion.  Any ideas?
    Thanks
Here is a video I just recorded of it  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZAc9o3Z4Dc

    Hello everyone!
I found this topic which took my attention as I've been having the same issue for some time..
Please excuse my bad english, I'm italian... but I'll try to point everything up the best I can.
Every time I hooked up my macbook pro 13" mid 2010 to the external monitor/TV. I started to hear my hard disk chirping and clicking...
That was worrying me a lot, thinking my hard disk was going to abandon me soon....
But I finally came to a solution!!
Well.. not really a solution, but certainly a workaround.
In my case my Mac is lying on the side of a 46" Led TV which I use also as a monitor for it, hooked up via HDMI cable and HDMI-MiniDV out Hama adapter. I was using a wifi connection.
Then I thought "could it be the wifi antenna disturbing the hard disk when the mac is closed?"
I connected my mac via LAN cable to the router, turned off the wifi, and... my Mac is now quiet as a frozen lake (and a lot faster too)!! ;D
Please let me know if that works for you too.
    Cheers!

  • Can I use external speakers with the iPad when using Facetime?

Can I use external speakers with the iPad when using Facetime?  How do I do that?

They have to be either plugged in via headphone jack or the dock port at the bottom. If you can. I've used it on apple tv, but that's it. I don't know if the others work, but I don't see why not. Try plugging in speakers in the headphone jack. You will get an answer :)

With TSM adware removal tool I was able to remove unknown software that was making ads pop up when using Safari. So the y don't pop up anymore. The problem now is that when I open safari It is still downloading websites and after awhile it freezes the browser. I have to constantly go to Safari Preferences to remove them and then the browser will start working again. What can I do to stop this?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Audigy 2 Value randomly pops/clicks when the computer is just idling.

EAudigy 2 Value randomly pops/clicks when the computer is just idling.; I can't figure out why the I hear random popping and clicking when I'm doing absolutely nothing to the computer. Typing this right now doesn't seem to cause any popping. It usually happens when I'm not really doing anything to my computer. This was happening with Creative's drivers and software so I switched to kX drivers, but that didn't help. When I first got my computer (Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe) and got the Audigy 2, I had no problem with Creative's software/drivers at the time, no popping had occur until I installed an SATA HD. PCI latency tool helped at the time. Then I had to go through a reformat and after the reinstallation of Windows XP, the popping started occuring randomly. After my motherboard supposely didn't want to POST anymore, I bought another one which was the Epox. And same problem occured even though I reformat and reinstalled windows.
Right now, the only thing I could think of that the SATA HD and Sound Blaster cards don't mix well together. But none of these are sharing resources. I did not want to try decrease any hardware acceleration at the moment, will there be any difference in sound or performance if I lower the acceleration?
    Here are my current specs,
    Windows XP Pro SP3
    Amd AthlonXP 2600+ @ 2.2ghz
    GB DDR Ram
    ATI x800 xt AIW
    Epox 8RDA3+ Pro
Running Sata HD and IDE, SATA is the master dri've.
    Some other info,
The sound card is not shared by any IRQ
PCI Latency Tool didn't help when I tried to set the latency from 32 to 64
    Bios is updated
    Nforce2 drivers are updated
    Klite codec pack 4.5.3 installed
kX drivers used instead of Creatives?
    Onboard sound is disabled
Dxdiag did not find any problems

Can I get audio through iPhone when using apple tv?

What do you mean exactly? Are you wanting to output the audio to your iPhone while say watching a video on your Apple TV?  If so, I'm afraid it's not possible.  However, you should post this in the Apple TV forums for a better confirmation on then.  There are some prettty knowledgable people who hang out there.

  • ORA-15072 when using external redenacy?

    Hello -
I am getting ORA-15072 (command required at least one failure groups) when using external redundancy. I am using asmlib on Linux, and I have a feeling that it it a multipathing issue. Here are the output from some of my commands:

Why would I be getting ORA-15072 with external redundancy (using asmlib)?
    Thanks in andvance!

The header status is showing as "unknown"... Could this be part of the issue?

  • Click/Tick/Hiss sound before audio comes on when using headphone jack.

This started happening yesterday on my 1.5 week old macbook. Whenever an audio source comes through after a period of silence, say on IM without any music from iTunes playing or when you just start playing a song in iTunes, there is a short but very distinct ticking sound that happens before the audio is played. At first I ignored it but after a while, it got really annoying; especially when you're typing in an IM conversation and the tick happens on every send and reply. Is anyone else having this problem? Should I call up applecare/visit my local apple retail store?
It happens on both battery and AC. I've already tried resetting the PMU. I don't think it happens when using the macbook speakers, but I can't say for certain since the freqeuency response on them are pretty bad. And this also happens when I boot into Windows using bootcamp.
P.S. If it turns out that this is a defect, since this is a custom build to order machine, should I call applecare to get it taken care of or would I be fine if I went to the apple store that's 20 mins away?

I just tested using my headphones. I can hear a very short, soft, single tick sound when I click to start playing a track in iTunes. I've never noticed it before. But I don't do IM a lot.
Unless you're hearing something more dramatic, I think you would have a hard time convincing someone in an Apple Store that it's a defect worth fixing.
What about visiting an Apple Store, take your headphones, and try them on floor samples to see if they all do it? If not, you could make a case.

  • Crackling/popping/garbled when using USB audio iPod iOS 6.16

I know several people are having this issue.  iPod touch with iOS 6.16, when using the USB cable plugged in to Ford Sync or other stereo head units with USB connectivity, I hear a random popping/crackling/garbled sound.  The iPod does this on 2 different vehicles so I know it is not the stereo it self.  I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado that I added the IS-GM655 adapter to install a USB and AUX port.  Also I have a Ford Van that has the SYNC system in it.
When the iPod is plugged in to the stereo via the USB port, I get random popping or crackling like a CD skipping from the audio. When the iPod is connected via the AUX headphone jack, I don't seem to hear any popping or crackling.  I have tried cleaning the port on the bottom of the iPod with rubbing alcohol and it seemed to help a little, but I still noticed the popping/crackling/garbled sound coming from the USB connectivity. Also, Bluetooth and WI-FI are off, I even tried airplane mode and different USB cables, still get same symptoms.
Any fixes for this yet, it appears from all of the other threads I have read and googled, there are SEVERAL other people experiencing this issue and nothing has fixed it??
The only thing I use the iPod for is music, there are no other apps installed on it currently.

Hey Relentless85, Have you tried a "Cline Free" dryer sheet? ! OK, done messing around. It's static electricity, why I have no idea. In my Toyota, I have this issue, The other half's Toyota-- no issue! (go figure) It's always worse in the winter, and only with one adapter. As long as you don't touch the iPod, move it or look at it for to long, your OK. But do any one of the listed activities, you know use the iPod-- it clicks and pops likes a bowl of Rice Crispy's. This helped me, it's going to sound stupid and shouldn't work but it does help. Get yourself a grounding tether, the wrist strap with the wire, the thing you wear when working on computer's, anyway place the strap on your iPod, so it touches the metal back, and the other end attach to some part of your vehicles frame, not to any of the wiring! It shouldn't work but it does for me. The garbled sound, does it it sound like the feedback noise from cassette tapes? (Maybe your not old enough for that...) or over metered sound? A distortion or rumble? Try turning off the EQ feature on your iPod or put it on FLAT, or reduce the volume output level from your iPod to about 80% - 85%. It could be the iPod is sending a frequency that exceeds your car stereo's range, (over metering. On analog tape you did this to boast the bass, but the same practice in digital format causes distortions). About the only other thing to try is Resetting or Restoring, but I don't think it will help in this case. If the tether ground helps, it static, if not-- then you cleared out one thing to check. Hope this helps, Good luck. Cheers.

  • Recordings Using External Speakers

Hi, I currently have the new generation of 13 inch MacBook Pro. I have bought Logitech external speakers which I plug into my 3.5mm headphone jack. But when I do this I am unable to record any sound whilst using any software such as Quick Time. If I unplug my Logitech speakers and record via my internal microphone then it works.
Basically I want to DJ using my MacBook Pro. I have a USB external sound card for my headphones to be plugged into whilst using Virtual DJ Limited Edition. The version of Virtual DJ I have you can't record directly from that software.
Is there anyway that I can record sound coming through my external Logitech speakers?
I am new to Mac so please be patient with me. Any help would be appreciated a lot.
    Thanks

Presumably your Logitech speakers have a built-in microphone?  If so, make sure to select it in:
System Preferences > Sound > Input
Or, in QuickTime Player, create a new Audio recording and click the downward-pointing arrow on the far-right of the recording window that appears.
If you're doing this and still experiencing problems, you may need to provide further details.
    HTH.

  • Audio not coming out both external speakers on Lenovo Horizon All-in-one

I have just received my Lenovo Horizon 27 inch all-in-one pc and I've noticed a problem with the audio.  When I plug in my external speakers I only get audio out of the left channel.  I noticed another person with the same problem posted to the forums some time back but the Lenovo tech never got back to him with a solution so I'm really hoping I'll have better luck.
The sound comes out propperly when headphones are plugged in but my speakers only output a single chanel of audio.  The speakers work fine on other PCs.  As was suggested in the other thread, I compared the headphone jack and the speaker jack and they are identical.  Same number of stripes, same length, and I believe the same girth.
Here's the url for the other post I mentioned: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaCentre-Desktops-Home-Servers/Horizon-27-sound-issue/m-p/1475392/high...
I also can't seem to find where the number is to call for support so if someone could help me with that I'd be very appreciative.
    Thanks,
    Charles
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Okay, so I called Lenovo support and as always, they were polite but their solution was that it was a software issue and I needed to restore my computer, so not very good advice but often given by every tech support.  It's like cutting off your hand because you have a cuiticle.
Anyway, so in all the sitting and waiting I had a thought come back about when I used to manage a computer store that sold Macs.  Apple, when they released the Macbook Air, tried to squeeze so much into the tiny case that there were a million problems with the device one of which was that some headphones and speakers worked fine (namely ones made by Apple, go figure) and others wouldn't work at all.  It was a design flaw related to have very low tollerances for minor differences in the headphone jacks length et al.
So I used an extension audio cable with my speakers and it works fine now.  So the answer is that there is a design flaw in the Lenovo Horizion related to the effort to squeeze so much into the thin device which lowers the devices tollerance for variations in the size and shape of the headphone plug.  I hope this helps someone else since the solution is simple and if it had been in a database it would have saved a lot of time for me and the techs.  Not complaining, just wanting to put this information out there for others who might be experiencing the same sort of problems.

  • Use external speakers ASWELL AS built in

Is there a way for me to play sound on my laptop with the built in audio aswell as external speakers??
I need an answer today.... THANKS!!!!!

I think a lot of folsk would like to be able to do that - but sadly I think this is a case where Apple's elegant design does not leave the user enough options. It is great that the system can detect when an external audio device is conected - but the user should still have the option of deciding what to do when that is the case --- feedback to Apple is a good idea --- you might try searching over at Mac OS X hints web site. maybe there is some prefs file that can be edited using tetminal

  • Yoga 13 - On-screen Keyboard Randomly Popping Up When Using Physical Keyboard?

While in laptop mode, and typing on the built-in physical keyboard or a keyboard attached via USB, the on-screen keyboard will randomly pop up, taking away focus (particularly noticeable when using extended desktop on an external display) and eating up half of the screen real estate.  As soon as I press the next key on the physical board, the on-screen keyboard minimizes itself.  Sometimes it will pop up when I'm not even touching the laptop!
Anyone else experience this and/or know how to stop it?  It's the only thing about this machine that drives me absolutely nuts.  It seems to be random.  I can't pin it down and haven't found any similar reports via Google search.
    Thanks in advance.

Disabling "OnScreen Keyboard (Lenovo Transition)" stopped it.  The solution is good enough for me, as I don't need the keyboard to pop up on its own anyway.  It'll pop up when I tap in a text-entry box, and that's all that matters.
Attempts to calibrate the screen were unsucecssful.  I can't say whether or not a screen calibration will stop the random pop-up issue because every time I calibrated the screen, it broke the right-side screen swipe that reveals the Charms Menu.  Resetting the screen calibration was the only way I could find to restore the right-side swipe function. This is quite unfortunate because, regardless of the fact that it broke my Charms swipe, my touchpoints were FAR more accurate after the calibration than before.
So now I have another problem.  I can't calibrate my screen for optimum accuracy without losing the convenience of the right-side swipe.
    Any ideas?
