Audio Skipping, Stuttering, Ticking

Every now and then my MacBook produces a very frustrating error: all audio output begins to skip or stutter. For example, I'll be watching a video, and there will start to be a subtle "tick tick tick" in the background, which will then grow into a "CHK CHK CHK" and then all audio will "skip" by that same rhythm, continuing it's progress on the timeline in the background, but interrupted by short bursts of silence/fuzz at intervals of about 2 per second.
Once this happens, ALL system audio is affected, no matter what the source (iTunes, VLC movie files, or even system "beeps").
The only thing that seems to work is restarting, but sometimes that only buys me a few minutes of clear audio playback before the skipping begins again.
This problem happens at seemingly random times, whether there is one program open or many. Sometimes it will not happen for days, other times it will occur within minutes of powering on.
Any help?

I had the same problem. For me it occurs when the 'compressord' process (part of QMaster I think) becomes unresponsive.
Open up your Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder) and see if any processes have hung.
I am now trying to figure out why compressord hangs at odd times, and why it impacts the audio stream.

  • Audugy 2 Platinum Spdif Optical out audio skips/stutters/static/pop/interfere

I have the Audigy Dolby 5. working, blue light from the sony receiver, but when the dvd plays with powerdvd, the picture is fine, but the audio skips and stutters. It works fine when I am decoding via the audigy and analog,?and I have tried powerdvd and windvd and they both have the same issue with spdif, so the issue is with the Optical out and some kind of interference.
    Is there anything?I can do?
Any input would be appreciated, thank you.

  • Audio skipping/stuttering over lightning - car stereo

    Hi,
I've recently bought an iPhone 6 (64GB, currently running iOS 8.1.1) as well as a new car stereo (Sony CDX-DAB500) which has a USB port. When playing music (or any audio) from the iPhone over the lightning/USB connection, it quite often pauses, stutters or skips for around a second each time before resuming. it can happen up to 4 or 5 times during each song. The problem happens when playing through the built in music or podcast app. I'm using the standard lightning cable that ships with the iPhone.
Any ideas why this could be occurring and/or how I could go about fixing it? it's a minor issue but it's getting increasingly annoying.
    Thanks
    James

    - Contact the car sypstem manufacturer/go to their support site
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
It could be that the iOS update caused the problem.

  • Audio Skipping/Stuttering

In the last few days i have begun to experince skipping of audio tracks, but only in Itunes, the songs work fine in any other media player and my Ipod.
The skipping is accompanied by a CPU Spike ranging from 20%-90% and only occurs when Bitcomet is open.
I have no idea what the problem could be, does anyone have any ideas? Ive always used these programs together and its only just begun to happen..
    Windows XP Pro (With SP2)
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS (Latest Drivers)
    Itunes 6.0.4.2 (Latest)
    Bitcomet 0.64 (Latest)

Well, the first question that comes to mind, since you're torrent downloading, is, have you run a spyware/malware/virus program recently?
And if you're 'sharing' stuff (people d/l from you) then that could cause issues as well . . . causing your computer to get 'too busy' (the spikes) for iTunes to function... Just because it's 'always worked' doesn't mean it will continue to if people are downloading from you, and the more you have that you're sharing (as I understand torrents) the more you have people downloading. And I'm not EVEN going to get into the legality of most things available as torrents....
I'm assuming there's no issue when the torrent software is off?
Also, have you asked around in the torrent software's forums, if they have one?
Just my thoughts, at any rate.

  • Apogee Duet FireWire skipping/stuttering audio

I've bought Apogee Duet FireWire back in 2011 when I had another macbook pro and I believe it was OS X Lion powered. The problem started since I updated to Mountain Lion and next upgrades were the same. There was a time when it was not very clean if the drivers at the official apogee's site are fresh enough. But now I have OS X Yosemite and fresh drivers that claim to be for this system. As to hardware, since Apogee had only FW400 wire, later I bought FW800 wire, and then FW800<->ThunderBolt adapter. So now I use this connection: Duet -> FW400/FW800 wire -> FW800/ThunderBolt adaptor -> MacBook Pro. The audio is working normal in 80% of time, but otherwise there are stutterings of the sound. Is there a way to get rid of this problem? Thank you.

I just started having problems with my Duet this afternoon and found this thread so I thought I'd give a shout out to you guys to see if you have any ideas before talking with the company....
I've had my Apogee Duet since about feb and never had any problems until this afternoon. For some reason the Duet doesn't seem to want to interface with my computer at all anymore. When plugged in, the lights light up on the Duet however under system profiler I get the "unable to list firewire devices" error msg. Under the Sound tab in preferences, the Duet is not listed as an available I/O. In the Apple Midi Setup or whatever it's called in utilities, the icon for the Duet is still there but it doesn't show it as online. I can still press the big button and the little green light cycles through input 1/input 2 yada yada yada, but the computer doesn't seem to see it. When I open up Maestro, both the control and mixer screens are completely blank. I've tried resetting the unit (holding button down for 5 seconds), using different firewire cords, and finally uninstalling and reinstalling the Maestro software (using the Duet software - May 2008 link on apogees site) and none of these things solve the problem. I haven't had a chance to plug in another FW400 device into my Macbook Pro to see if it's a problem with the port, but I get the same result with the Duet on my MBP and my G5 PPC tower, which leads me to believe it's a problem with the unit. Also, since it's bus-powered, the lights wouldn't light up if the ports on the computer were fried, right?? Has this happened to anyone else?? Any ideas on how to fix it before calling up Apogee?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • ITunes skips, stutters, jerky when I minimze

Okay here is the deal. I use to have iTunes 4.9 and it worked fine. When I went to update my iTunes to 6.0 it messed up my computer big time. So I uninstalled 6.0 and installed 4.9. That didn't work. I couldn't go back to the way it was. The problem is when iTunes is open and I try to play music it play fine. However when I go to minimize the program it starts to skip, stutters, plays jerky whatever, it doesn't play like it did on 4.9. It also bogs down my computer. I have over a gig or RAM. So I went to try my other audio player music match and the problem is even worse. I never had this problem before I installed iTunes 6.0. My mouse now disappears randomly when I have too many programs open and iTunes is not open. What ever iTunes did is conflicting with my other programs even when I restart and never open up iTunes.
I am running windows XP home edition SP2.
System Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz
    DirectX version: 9.0 or better
Graphics Card Processor: GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X
    Video BIOS version 4.28.20.05.02
    ForceWare version: 81.85
I have Safe mode (waveOut only) checked in QuickTime 7.0.3.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and nothing has change. If anything things got worse. My mouse is even jerky at times.
    PLEASE HELP!

    hi Michael!
hmmmm. let's try running your XP "Input Devices" troubleshooter. easiest way to find it is to do a Help and Support Search on "list of troubleshooters", and scroll down the list until you see the relevant link.
    keep us posted.

  • Skipping/stuttering in itunes may in fact be a bigger problem..?

so, i've been over in the itunes forum for the last couple weeks digging around for a fix to an issue i've had with that app since upgrading to 7.6 for movie rentals.
specifically, it's SEVERE skipping & stuttering of audio & video files in itunes, irrespective of whether they've been purchased on ITMS or ripped from my personal collection.
i think there may be a connection, though, with QT, since i upgraded that to 7.4 at the same time. well, fast forward to tonight when i clicked on a link to go to youtube to check out something a buddy sent me...guess what? skipping video and audio for every single youtube video i selected. have gone to other streaming media sites and...voila! same thing.
it's apparent that the playback issue is a large one, or at least bigger than itunes for me...so was interested in whether anyone here has been experiencing something similar.
    this didn't exist before "leopard + QT 7.4 + itunes 7.6"
btw, the update to itunes 7.6.1 did not alleviate the issue.

agreed. could've written that better. was attempting to demonstrate the pervasiveness of the problem...
    affected media:
    - video & audio in itunes (m4p & m4v)
    - video & audio in quicktime (mpeg)
    - video & audio in both safari & firefox (flash)
    hoping someone's got a suggestion...

  • Audio Skipping in iTunes

I have been experiencing this problem for quite some time now. When I listen to music files either purchased from iTunes or directly uploaded from a CD onto iTunes, the audio skips. It is as if a second has been taken out of the song -- for instance, a song may jump from 22 to 24 seconds. It is never in the same place, and the number of times it happens per song varies.
This problem does not occur with files downloaded from other sources and played on iTunes. It only happens with the ones that are encoded by iTunes as AAC audio files.
Does anyone know if there is some type of troubleshooting I can perform to see if my computer is having a problem playing AAC audio files?? I am extremely perplexed by this, and no one has been able to help me thus far. Please someone help!

    Hi,
I have a similar problem with music files 'stuttering' or 'jittering' and it's particularly noticeable during quieter tracks. Almost sounds like crackles or pops in the background.
The interesting thing is that I played the same problematic files on the same machine using Windows Media Player and they were rock steady perfect!? Suggests to me an issue with the iTunes software. I was similarly tempted to reinstall iTunes and the audio drivers, but I see this didn't help another friend here with the same problem.
Th eproblem has come about since I transferred all music to my new computer running Windows 7 64 bit and wonder if there is an issue with the latest iTunes 64 bit version software??
    Any thoughts/advice please? Regards.

  • ITunes skipping/stuttering!

All of a sudden yesterday out of the blue iTunes (7.6.1) starts stuttering/skipping .... sounds "scratchy" "pops" like an old vinyl recording ... on every track always. It makes listening to my music library impossible, useless.
I did a search - nothing posted since December and no real solution.
I am using Tiger 10.4.11 on MacBook Pro Intel. I don't have the problem when playing iTunes on Mac mini. How to get rid of this!!!
Same thing happening when playing music samples at iTunes Store and also during podcasts.

I posted a reply Mar 26 to a similar discussion (labeled 'Audio Skip'), following up on post that connected this problem to a USB port on a MacBook. I was having this problem on a new iMac current with all software updates, with no obvious pattern for the skipping other than it happened every time I ran iTunes.
Thinking the USB port might be the problem I first switched the sound from my external harman/kardon speakers to the internal speakers and ran iTunes for over three hours. There was no skipping. I then switched back to external speakers but plugged into a different USB port on the back of the iMac. Several hours of play later I've had no skipping. Other devices plugged into the originally-used USB port are exhibiting no problems so don't think the port is 'bad'.
I'm not a hardware person so don't know why this seems to be working, but the skipping problems seems like a bug to me. I've not changed back to the original configuration to see if the problem returns.

  • Video and audio skipping in PowerDVD 8

    Hi,
I have an issue when I try to play DVD's in PowerDVD 8. Exactly every 5 seconds the video and audio skip, or jump/become choppy and I cannot watch a movie. I have been researching and trying to figure out what is happening but have no idea. Could it be the X-fi I have installed the latest beta drivers to no avail.
Anybody have this problem or have any ideas on how to fix it's I have updated all drivers/firmware for everything and still can't make it go, sigh.
    I have the following specs:
    Intel x38BT mobo
    X-Fi Fatalitly champ.
    4GB DDR3 RAM
    9800 GTX
    ASUS 8x dvd-rom
    E8500 CPU
    Win Vista 32-bit
    Thanks

    Try this utility:
    http://www.thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml
    and post results.
Gigabyte Boards at least with x48 chipset have an audio latency bug that is only fixed via a beta bios update. I have no idea if this also might affect your board...

  • Audio skips after rendering

Does anyone know how to correct audio that skips after rendering? The video is fine and the audio matches up to the video but the audio skips as though it is going in and out. The movie is about 2 hours long and the first few clips were fine but now it is becoming a problem. I rendered both the video and audio at the same time then I went back and rendered only.....mixdown to see if I could get it to work......no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Tammy,
If we've dropped a bit of time for this part of the edit, you now have time for more fun aspects of it.
While I will casually monitor my Meters, I spend much more time with a good set of noise-canceling headphones, listening critically. The Meters are basically to point up potential issues. With Audio, if you have not invested in a really good set of headphones, do yourself a big favor, and sneak 'em into the budget.
Glad that you got things toned down.
Now, let's go on to Lesson 02 - The Audio Mixer. Unlike adding Keyframes to a Clip, when your cutting is done, you can apply Track Keyframes to attenuate (also Pan, etc.) you Audio Tracks to suit. One would just change the Send in that Track to Write, or Touch, and "ride the gain" with the slider, as is required. I probably do most of my Audio editing there, than addressing the individual Clips. First thing that I have done is cut back a bit on the frequency of the Track Keyframes in Edit>Preferences, as I find the default to add too many (and you can go in and adjust these by hand, if you need to "smooth" things out a bit.). One caution: do this when you are satisfied with the cuts, Clip placement, etc., as these Keyframes are applied to the Track. If you were to remove a Clip, and replace it, those Keyframes would apply to that new Clip, whether you want them to, or not. This trips some folk up, if they do the Audio Mixer thing too soon in the editing. Wait until you are "in love" with your Timeline otherwise. It's like scoring a Project. One does that as about the very last step, or much work will be repeated, and that is not fun.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • ATV2 Video pixelated and audio skipping

I don't think this is the same as the flickering issue or the frame dropping issue discussed by others. Thus, the new thread.
When streaming videos (movies or TV shows) from itunes to the ATV2 the picture will get pixelated with the missing portions turning green. The video will continue but the audio skips (exactly like a needle on a record player skipping back). If I exit the video to the menu then resume, the video plays fine for awhile until the problem arises again. To give you an example of the frequency, it happened about a dozen times during one 40 minute episode.
All software is updated to the latest versions and all hardware has been restarted. Content is encoded using handbrake using the ATV2 preset and then passed through MetaX for tags. The setup is as follows: stored on DROBO->firewire->iMac->802.11n(5Ghz)->Airport Extreme->ethernet->ATV2.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks!

Haven't been able to see a pattern yet. I can watch a recently encoded movie (1-2hrs) without it happening once, but like I mentioned, it happened 12 times during a single 40 minute tv show. Both were encoded using same version of handbrake and ATV2 preset.
How do these two files compare in terms of total average data rate?

  • Only half of some iTunes Matched songs on my iPhone will play, then audio skips to next song in playlist!

Several (maybe 5%) of iTunes Matched songs on my iPhone do this... at EXACTLY 1/2 way through the song.
EXAMPLE: At 2:25 of a 4:50 long song (Shania Twain - From This Moment) the next song in playlist (Taylor Swift - Tim McGraw) starts as the audio skips to beginning of next song in playlist.  Oddly, Shania's attractive album artwork and title stays up while Taylor's tune plays (?)
When the timeline for the first Shania song hits the end, the artwork slides to Taylor Swift's CD Cover art and the timer slider adjusts to near the end of that song.
When I play same songs on the same playlist on iTunes (also downloaded from iTunes Match) this does not occur.
Does anyone else see this happen or are there any suggestions?
    THANKS
    geo

Hey Guys, from my late model iPhone 4, I am also seeing my iTunes Match songs terminate playing very abruptly ...some won't play at all ...others skip to the next track after 10 seconds.
I checked the source files on my iMAC, and they are 100 percent perfect.
Tried deleting them, recreating them, signing out and then back into iTunes with Match On & Off, etc ...still no resolution to these problems.
Maybe the MATCH product is crashing under it's own weight now?   It used to be good, but now I am not so sure anymore.
Please post if you have any solution or suggestions.
    Thanks!
    Pat

  • Audio skips when streaming from the internet (pandora/grooveshark).

I'm using airport extreme, wired connection, to a macbook pro (2011) and mac pro (2009). audio skips on both devices when streaming from pandora or grooveshark. problem has persisted through system upgrades, clean installs etc... Problem persists through different web browsers (Firefox/chrome/safari)
Ironicaly, Itunes radio does not skip, neither does netflix.
I have seen COUNTLESS posts regarding this problem from many different APPLE users. I would love to see apple address this problem...

Your first step is to determine if there is an issue with this specific movie or if it's a universal problem.  Does ANYTHING from the MBP provide both sound and video?
Another thought is DRM coding but that should affect both video and audio.  If the movie has DRM coding and your television does not, then the movie won't play.  I'm not an expert but I don't think that that's your problem because you do get the video.

  • Audio skips back few seconds while video freezes

    Hi,
We are running FMS 4.0 to stream on-demand MBR videos using the OSMF player. We have noticed that occasionally during playback the video freezes, while the audio skips back a few seconds and starts playing. Once the audio catches up, the video unfreezes and resumes normal playback.
Any ideas on what might be causing this and how to debug?
    Thanks.

I looked at the logs and it does look like there was switching going on when this issue occured.
Could you expand a bit more on what you mean by "switching issue" and "exact same timelines" ?
Also, how could I go about verifying that the different bitrate streams have the same "timelines"?
    Thanks,
