Auto reconnect to network drives & servers

I have an old G4 machine squirrelled away that I use as a secondary backup drive. I have it set to come on between 4 and 5pm each day and schedule Retrospect backup for the same time on my MacPro (because TM can only handle one disk location!). I have to manually logon to the G4 machine through the Finder to get the drive to appear and the backup to start.
Is there a way in OSX to get the drive to reconnect automatically when the G4 machine wakes up?

We had the students set up with PHDs prior to this year, but with some class realignment that occurred, even if the students were assigned the same computer number in each class (laptops are in carts where each computer is numbered 1-27), a student could potentially have a mobile account on 28 different laptops and each laptop could potentially have hundreds of mobile accounts on them. Someone suggested a script to remove the mobile account at logout, but the initial login with PHDs seems to be very slow and we don't want that long initial login all year long.
About half of the laptops are 800 Mhz iBook G4s and the other half are 2.0 Ghz Macbooks.

  • Could not reconnect all network drives

    I have several drives mapped on different Windows 7 boxes in my office.  Just about every time I boot up one of these systems I receive the message "Could not reconnect all network drives" in the system tray.
    I should note that merely clicking the drive inside Windows Explorer will restore the connection.  I store the server logon credentials in Control Panel / Credential Manager then just map the network paths to drive letters.  I'm pretty sure the
    problem doesn't stem from any credentials type of problem though, because I have the exact same situation when connecting to only open shares.  I have noticed that a couple applications will restore the connection themselves when trying to access information
    on a share.  Most applications however will give an error and time out trying to access the shares unless I go and manually click each drive letter in Explorer.  For instance if I place Firefox bookmarks on a share and open Firefox, Firefox will
    display no bookmarks until I click the drive in Explorer and reopen Firefox.
    One thing I can do to fix the problem is hard code my IP address. I never receive the message if a computer has fixed IP address.  My router hands out IPs on the LAN dynamically, so I switch it to another router and tried a using a Linux based dhcp-server
    as well.  Neither fixed the problem.
    I'm a long time user of batch files and realize I could place use one as a band aid for this issue, but I don't want to go that route.

    According to the research, the mapped drive lost issue may be caused by the several possible reasons:
    Possible reason1. The problematic client doesn't reconnect to the target share at logon.
    Please follow the steps to re-configure the mapped driver on the client and then check if the issue will re-occur.
    Steps:
    a. Open "My Computer"
    b. Click on "Tools" and then select "Map Network Driver"
    c. input the \\ipaddressofserver\sharename to give the path of the share
    d. Check "Reconnect at logon"
    e. Drive gets mapped
    f. Double click on the drive to check.
    Possible Reason 2. Antivirus software or Windows Firewall may block the SMB protocol on clients.
    Please check if there is any Antivirus software and the Windows Firewall is enabled on the problematic client. If so, please disable them to check if the issue can be resolved.
    Possible Reason3. Fast Logon Optimization is enabled on the clients. 
    The fast logon feature may affect the display and drive letter assignment of a mapped network drive. As a result, the drive may have been mapped; however, the user on client cannot see it in Windows Explorer. He may recognize it as a failed network drive mapping.
    This is the reason why we usually suggest you to disable fast logon on the clients via a GPO, and please check if the mapped network drive will be occur under this circumstance.
    Please also configure the following group policy setting to disable Fast Logon Optimization to see if the issue still exists on the problematic clients.
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon\Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon
    When this policy is enabled, a Windows XP client behaves in the same manner as a Windows 2000 client at both system startup and at user logon.
    Please note: As this is a computer configuration, please run "Gpupdate /force" and then reboot the problematic clients to make it take into effect.

    If the issue still exists on the problematic clients, please also try adding the following registry subkey on the problematic client to check it works.
    Steps:
    a. Click Start, click Run, type REGEDIT, and then click OK.
    b. Locate and click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache
    c. Click Edit, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    d. Type SilentForcedAutoReconnect , and then press ENTER to name the value.
    e. Double-click SilentForcedAutoReconnect .
    f. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

  • Impossible to reconnect all network drives

    H there,
    On my Windows 8, I have defined 3 network drive (from my NAS), and although I am checking the box to save the credentials (which are different on the NAS and on Windows), at each reboot of the laptop it tells me it can not reconnect all network drives, and
    I see a red cross on the map.
    How can I solve this, As I am SURE the remote drivs are available ( and when I click the "disconnected drive", it ask for th elogin and PW, I enter it and it works ... but I need to do that manually all the time)

  • How to set up and auto-mirror a networked drive?

    So here's the situation.  I currently have a MBP Retina 15 (max spec'd), and there are some design processes that still run a little slow for my liking.  Given that I spend about half my working life at a desk plugged into a monitor anyway, I figured I'd get a Mac Pro to use when I'm in the office.
    What I need help with is how to:
    -Set up an external networked drive so that I can open and save all my projects to the same place regardless of which machine I'm working on.  I spend 90% of my laptop working time at home on the same network.
    -Have the networked drive auto-back up to another external storage device so that in case of HD failure.  Basically I want to save a file, and have it expeditiously (ideally instantly, but the sooner the better) back up to the secondary HD. 
    Somebody at the Apple Store suggested using a USB HD plugged into Airport Extreme, and that would work, I suppose, but
    1) I'd really prefer something plugged in to the Mac Pro to speed up the data transfer at least one one machine.
    2) There's only 1 USB port on the Airport Extreme.  So if we were to go this way, the back up mechanism would need to be built in to the drive -- some sort of double external HD that auto-mirrors.
    Any suggestions?

  • Auto import from network drive

    Lightroom tells me the watched folder for the auto import function cannot be a network drive. I am using a laptop tethered to a camera, which then is accessible via the network. I want to auto import from this laptop into Lightroom.
    Is this not possible?

    That's the way I have to do it today, but sometimes the laptop is too far away to have a good wi-fi connection. I want to be able to continue to take pictures while tethered to the laptop without stopping. Better to have Lightroom watch, and when the laptop comes back in wi-fi range, then to auto import.
    What is your auto import workflow?

    Is there any error message throwed when you reconnect the mapped drive? Can you directly access the UNC path of the mapped drive? What VPN programs do you use? Please check if the VPN client connect correctly.

    How did you map the network drive? Manually via GUI? Command? GPP? If you're using one of the above solutions, then try other solutions as a alternative way to check the result.
    According to your description, If Windows remains unable to reconnect mapped Network Drive at login, then I would suggest you created a batch file with net use command, use it as an logon script, this provides an alternate way to reconnect drives on
    a re-logon.

    net use x: \\server_name\shared_directory_name

  • One user can not map a network drive

                       Hi,
    A costumer of mine is trying to map a network drive for an existing user that has always had access to the NSS6000 Network Storage Device. This still works for all other users except this one. It looks like an authentication failure. They connect thru CFIS (which means it's using the active directory).
    So far i have troubleshooted the following and ran out of options half an hour ago.
    I rebooted the NAS. No luck.
    I made a different folder and gave the user access. And tried to connect to that. No luck. (to confirm its not related to the folder security)
    I tried to map the drive on a different computer. No luck. (to confirm its not a local computer problem)
    I tried to map the drive to another folder on a different server, this worked fine. (to confirm credentials are correct).
    I tried to remove the user on the NSS600 and tried to update it. The user reappeared instantly in the user list on the NAS. No luck.
    I fear the user table the NSS keeps is corrupted. And i can't find a way to force the NAS to recreate it based on current folder security or active directory users.
    Please help, as i am in no mood to reconfigure the entire NAS.

  • Network drives randomly disconnecting, unable to reconnect

    I have been having an issue with network drives randomly disconnecting. When I try and reconnect using the Connect to Server dialog, the share is greyed out. My current workaround has been to open up terminal and run umount /Volume/Share_Name, and I am able to connect again afterwards. This is happening multiple times a day, and across multiple servers. I have poked around the forums and seen some people with similar issues, but the solution of connecting with cifs:// instead of smb:// has not made any difference.

What many don't realise is that many 3rd party developers stray from the 802.11 series specifications in an attampt to boost speed and get one up on their competitors. For instance D-Link, amongst others, use a short preamble setting by default in some of their routers to improve performance. However, this is non-standard and when it comes across wireless network adapters that don't support this then you have problems. They assume that their network adapters are being used for "maximum speed and compatibility". Whether Apple should or should not support a short preamble is another subject altogether.
    However, I do agree with you in that Apple should put more work into their Airport software.

    If you are looking to actually integrate what you have on the external one terabyte hard drive with the 2 TB hard drive you're using inside the Mac the best move for you if you want access to that data when using the Mac Pro server is going into utilities click on the top bar where it says go fall that down to the utilities told them that folder quickly once you are there you will see migration assistant click on that you will be asked to type your admin password to that.   • Network Drive Reconnect after Network reconnects?

    I use hamachi to mount a network drive on my home server (which I back up files to, etc.) on my OSX 10.8.1 MBP.
    The problem is that I'm constantly having to connect / reconnect to the wireless network at work (just because of how much I move around between locations at work), which means I'm constantly having issues crop up due to the fact that even though I don't have a wireless connection yet my computer is trying to reconnect to the network drive.
    So the basic series of events should be:
    Establish wireless connection -> establish connection to server -> mount drive
    Is there any way to make sure that this happens in this order rather than the computer trying to do it all at once and throwing me errors?
    If that's not possible, is there at least a way to have the computer periodically check and try to mount the network drive (right now, after the first attempt if it can't it gives up, says something along the line of "can't find network location" and I have to manually mount it)?
    I already have it set up so that the drive mounts automatically upon login (Accounts -> Login Items, etc.), but that seems to only apply after a system reboot.

    I find it best to NOT Automount them at all, but have a quick & easy Dynamic Mount system by first deleting those Login Items, then...
    What I would do is, once you get the Icons mounted on the Desktop, is to drag them them to the Dock between Applications & Trash, or if you have many and just want a neat Popup Menu, then create a New Folder on the Desktop, drag those Mounted Icons to that Folder, (once there you can even rename them to whatever you wish), then drag that Folder to the Dock between Applications & Trash.
    And of course I'd have 3 New Locations in Locations...
    One called Hpme, one called Work, and one called All Off...

  • Auto-mount network drive?

    Hi all,
    I have a Mac Pro running Leopard and a 1TB Buffalo Terastation on my home network. I am able to access with the Terastation from the Mac by going though Finder. To do so, I have to click on the name of the TS on the left side of Finder and then click on the "share" folder in the next column. This mounts the network share as /volumes/share.
    This is OK but I currently have my iTunes library on the Buffalo TS. However, if my iPod is already docked before I power up the Mac, iTunes can't find its library because the share isn't mounted. I have to manually make Leopard mount the share by the procedure in the above paragraph.
    Is there a way I can get the Mac to auto-mount the network share like I can under Windows or Linux? Since MacOS X is Linux based, can I use the Linux method for auto-mount the share by editing a fstab file?
    Any info will be appreciated. I've tried searching and have tried a few tips but haven't got it working yet.

    I'm not sure if this solution works or not, to be honest.
    I've added my mounted sharepoint to my login items aswell as editing the file you described:
    MacProBU:/MacProBU x url net, automounted,url==afp://admin:admin@"AFP on Tolton2TB.afpovertcp.tcp.local/MacProBU" 0 0
    MacProBU is the name of the Sharepoint and drive, once it is mounted.
    AFP on Tolton2TB.afpovertcp.tcp.local/MacProBU is the location of my sharepoint when I 'Get Info' on my mounted drive.
    My Network drive now seems to mount and be ready to use at login, however a Finder window now opens every time, showing my the contents of the Share.
    Not too much of a problem, but a bit annoying.
    I've read tons of articles about auto-mounting shares, AFP and SMB etc drives
    All seem a bit mis-matched with no idea what's going on. And a lot are complaining about the removal of NetInfo in leopard.

  • Map Network Drive to Time Capsule from WinXP Home with reconnect at logon

    I bridged my TimeCapsule on a wired home network. TC provides wireless(n/g) for a Macbook & Dell Laptop, print server, and storage. MAC & PC's all access internet; The Mac & PC's were able to find a reasonable driver for the printer (not a generic); and visibility to the TC and even Mac<-->PC (all on the same WINS Workgroup; file sharing/AFP/SMB turned on) working OK.
    I want to have a single drive letter mapped to a TC folder during a PC login. Using Windows Map Network Drive... I can supply \\server\share as my \\[mytimecapsulename]\[path to folder] and then I use "connect as different user" and supply the username/password as specified in the AirPort Utility setup for TC. Then I click Reconnect at Logon, and Finish. Windows is "happy" and the connection is made, applications on the PC that need the folder have access to the folder according the permissions on the TC. Sweet.
    Until, logoff and logon, and XP burps "not able to establish all network connections". Exploring MyComputer shows the Mapped Drive (but disconnected), double-click I'm prompted for username/password; enter it and I'm runnning.
    This seems to be a workaround, and I'd like to have the reconnect work seamlessly.

    I want to test my understanding. The TC password and the Windows login passwords should be the same. If there are more than one Windows users, then both of their passwords should be the same as the TC password?
    My understanding of "connect using different user name" is that I supply a username that the TC understands, i.e. the username/password set up in AirPort utility, and I would not supply any of the Windows accounts/passwords. This has worked for me. I supply the time-capsule-username/password not my Windows username and the Map Network Drive makes the connection. But it doesn't make the Reconnet at logon.
    So it sounds like what I should try is to change the timecapsule password to match the Windows account password of the windows user attempting to connect to the TC. Which means I'm limited to one password even if there are more than one Windows users attempting to connect.
    Sound about right? I'll try it out and let you know 6-12 hrs.

  • After ejecting my drive it auto reconnects

    Hi,
    I have had this problem with Snow Leopard and Lion.
    When I connect my cellphone (HTC WM6.5) everything works fine but when I eject the device it auto-reconnects before I get the chance to pull the cable, giving me a faulty removal error.
    Ok it's not a major issue but I'm just wondering why.
    Anyone some ideas besides it's Bill Gates to blame?

    You can check by selecting the iPod Touch from under devices.  This will bring you to the iPod's Summary tab.  On this screen, check to see if the Sync over Wi-Fi option is enabled.
    How exactly are you ejecting the device?

  • Network drive keeps droping

    Hello everyone,
    It's been a while (few months) since I've gone back to using my MAC a lot more than once a week. Now I'm using it almost every day. Recently, I've tried to connect to another PC's hard drive as a network drive. No problems in connecting but after a few minutes even with activity on the drive, a message pops up alerting me to the fact that the network drive has lost the connection. I can easily reconnect but it only takes a few minutes and then drops the connection again. I have full access to the drive/files and folders and it behaves like one would expect a network drive to behave except it keeps dropping it's connection.
    Any help would be appreciated,

    I have this problem with some of my Mac's in our company.  We are on OS X 10.9.4 and it seams to happen mostly with AFP shares to a Mac Server.  But I have also seen it with SMB shares on Windows servers.
