AutoCAD in LabVIEW

Hello all,
I have an electron storage ring which I need to bakeout to 250 degrees Celsius. I have written a user interface to control all of my heaters and thermocouples. Now I need to make a schematic of the ring for a user to be able to easily click on a part of the ring and read/write to that section. This is essential because we need to keep a relatively low temperature differential between different zones of the ring. Any ideas on how to link an AutoCAD drawing of the ring to a control system on my front panel with controls?
Cheers,
KC

It may be possible to (at the very least) display the ring on the front panel using a 3D picture control. If you can export your Autocad model to an ASCII STL file, you can convert and display it.
For a 2D drawing, you could create custom booleans and make the images transparent. If you place those over the ring/picture control in specific locations, that would allow you to use events based on what part of the ring the user clicks on (i.e. what transparent control the user clicks).

  • How can I import an Autocad drawing in LabView ?

Hi, I am new in this forum and have just started to use LabView and the DSC module. My question is: Is it possible to import an Autocad drawing in LabView and use it as a background picture with dynamic I/O tags on top of it, e.g. to import a picture of an office and then place status info of temp, light level, doors open/closed etc. on top of the background picture. If anybody has got some example code they would like to share, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
LVDSC supports the BMP and WMF file formats for images. If you can somehow convert your Autocad drawing into any of these formats, using them in your VIs is easy.
In the Tools>>Datalogging & Supervisory Control menu, you'll find an Image Navigator. This image navigator will allow you to import your images and copies them to Clipboard which you can later paste onto your front panels.
If you can't convert or 'save as' your Autocad drawing to a BMP/WMF format, as a last resort, you can take a screen dump (hit Alt+PrintScrn) and save it as either of these formats.
    Hope this helps.
    Rgds,

  • Printing the Autocad drawing by Labview

My application should found the Autocad drawing and send it to one of the network printers/plotters. Is it possible to send the Autocad drawing to printer/plotter by Labview application?

Not really an answer, but some ideas:
If by an Autocad drawing you mean an Autocad DWG file than the general answer will be negative (in any case the solution will not be easy). DWG is not a "printable" (directly) file, it contains many objects/views, etc. From the formal point of view, this is proprietary Autodesk file format with documentation unavailable for users (I'm not sure that trying to decode it will be a good solution as this at least will take awfull amount of your programming time).
If you run on Windows platform and autocad is installed on the same computer than there is a little hope that it is possible to do using automation approach (DDE, ActiveX). LabView have those abilities, the only question rests - I don't know if Autodesk supplies such kind
of services as working with autocad drawing trough DDE/Activex. To make it clear, it's better to contact AutoDesk specialists now.

  • Convert an autocad file to co-ordinates

    Hi,
How to convert an autocad dwg or dxf file to txt file containing co-ordinates, using labview.
    Regards,
    Giridhar Rajan
    Automation Engineer, Design

    Mumbai, India

    Hello,
I think you have a couple options – neither of which is
likely to be easy.  One option is to find
some other program which does that for you (you mention needing to use LabVIEW,
but you might be able to call a third party program to do it for you).  Another option is to see if autocad has an
automation server and make calls to autocad to extract each object’s coordinates
and write those to file (you’ll have to check up on the documentation of
autocad about this).  The other option is
to convert the files to some sort of image file using non-NI software (such as
autocad or a conversion program) and use the image VIs
to discover where various objects are and convert those.  This will likely not be easy either though….  I think your best bet is going to be finding
some way to make calls to autocad to get the coordinates of all the objects in
the file using ActiveX (if it is capable of that).
Sorry I don’t have more info for you – best of luck though!

  • Stl files and labview

    Ok here we go
Purpose: 3d micro/nanofabrication of collagen matrixes via multiphoton excitation.
What this means: A laser is driven by two mirrors attached to galvanometers and controlled by labview. When the laser passes over the collage (several times) it becomes crosslinked. The result is a potential micro scale cell scaffold that has potential in tissue engineering.
The goal: As of now we have limited capabilities for creating 3d structures. Lines rectangles and circles are easy enough but anything larger..or deeper requires the movement of an xyz stage which is also controlled by labview. The goal is to be able to be able to simply create an object in autocad (or a similar product) output the file to labview and run the galvanometers, which incidentally, move according to how much voltage is passed through them.
Ideas: Let's say we wanted to create a sphere. The laser only has one plane of focus so to create a 3d object requires slicing. Divide the sphere up into several hundred slices, which, when stacked loosely resemble a jagged sphere. Slicing can be done in a program called Magics RP. This is where the .stl file comes in. From magics rp we should be able to get an .stl file that describes the coordinates of these slices (in ascii or binary format) and from here transfer the job over to labview.
Problem: NO IDEA how to go about doing that last step. Does labview have anything built in to handle .stl files?? Any advice appreciated.

    Hi Jimbo2,
The only mechanisms for creating 3D plots in LabVIEW are using the 3D Surface Graph, 3D Parametric Graph, and 3D Curve Graph. I don't know if these graphs will fit your application, you could probably better determine that than myself. Also, to my knowledge there is nothing inherent to LabVIEW to directly handle .stl files. However, you might be able to find a 3rd party program that will display .stl files. If the 3rd party package has an ActiveX control, you can embed it into the front panel of your VI using an ActiveX Container and call methods and properties to the control using the property nodes and invoke nodes in the ActiveX palette in LabVIEW.
I hope this gives you a couple of ideas,
    Travis H.

  • Labview + scripting + HPGL , DXF , EDIF , CIF

    Hi everyone,
I need to incorporate scripting functions in my labview application.
Did anyone interface LV with the VBscript OCX or another programming

Where can I find an example parser that would support loops and
    function definitions (any language)?
Did anyone write a "compiler"/import utility for the following file

    Hi,
you should try the Tcl - Software at http://www.scriptics.com/. With
this interpreting language you have the choice to access static
variables that are defined anywhere in your dlls and extend the
functionality of the script language by writing extensions in C. We
implemented TCL in a automotive test stand environment and are moving
more and more functionality to this language. It's so powerful and
    flexible...
....and it's public. You can adapt the source to your special
    requirements, if you want.

  • Number of LabVIEW users

Does anyone know how many users there are that actually program with LabVIEW? I go to the seminars we have in this area and it is rare to find an actual user, mostly people who are interested in getting information. I also have seen many people who are impressed with the software, buy a copy, and never use it. It seems to be a side job for most users. If you check the web job postings, there are very few jobs that mention it, and if they do, it is usually in a list of other desirable experience. I guess my concern is why should you invest the time and effort to learn and become proficient at LabVIEW, and then not have any job prospects if you should leave your current job. I already have invested a lot of time to learn the software, but I am not su
re I should invest any more of my time in something that is not very widely used. I would be interested in other peoples opinions.

    eh,
LV is a TOOL for engineers and technicians. Most of us are primarily ME's or EE's or some other E. trying to get a job done. The job is not to write LV programs, but to examine or control some system.
This is the beauty of LV, it make us better engineers and technicians, it does not waste our time on trivial stuff like syntax.
This is not to say that some very excellent programmers have not pushed and pushed LV so that it is now a very useful programming tool. But, the primary point of LV is not the progamming itself.
Most employers want someone who can solve real problems first and use software second. (I see the same thinking with CAD software. Learning Pro/E or AutoCAD is all well and good, but what can you DO? I
t is relatively easy to gain proficiency with CAD compared to gaining proficiency as an engineer.)
I don't know your skills set so this is a general comment, not directed at you particularly. If you want to educate your self well, get an applied physics, or mechanical or electrical engineering degree. Then you will know better how the universe works and can usefully apply LabVIEW.
If you are a degreed engineer, by all means LV will be a great skill to learn. It will open doors to some very rewarding and interesting work opportunities. If you are not degreed, consider that a first goal.
