Autofs / automount question

does anyone know how to set up autofs such that one can automount a filesystem over the network that is exported by another machine?  i've read the arch wiki on autofs and it is either outdated or just does not really explain how to do this. --  i cannot even start the autofs daemon or run automount by hand (fails, but nothing is logged to illuminate the issue even when i try to force logging):
root % . /etc/rc.d/autofs start
:: Starting autofs daemon                 [FAIL]
root %
or,
/etc/autofs % automount -v ./auto.master
automount: test mount forbidden or incorrect kernel protocol version, kernel protocol version 5.00 or above required.
/etc/autofs %
technically i am not a new user but i definitely feel like one now.
i have all the necessary packages installed, as far as I can tell.  i am running the HAL daemon on startup, but i don't really think that should have anything to do with this.  i have written an auto.master file, privileges are all set to 0644.  the directory i refer to in the file exists and is empty.
any help would be greatly appreciated...

At my work we use autofs and ldap.  I'm gonna try to remember how we set this up.  You need to install a couple packages, autofs on the computer you want to mount to, and a nfs-server on the computer you want to mount from.
Server.
Packages :: nfs-server
Files needing editing
/etc/auto.master  (user data and mount point)
/etc/exports  (/path/to/shared/folder and pcs (hostnames) which are allowed to mount)
I'm not quite sure, but you probably have to add the user to /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow
Client
packages:
autofs
Files to be edited
/etc/auto.master
The auto.master files should be the same on both pcs.  I don't know why you can't start autofs though.

  • Automount question

    I'm a newbie to Lion Server, so this may be obvious to some, but how to I get volumes to Automount on my clients?
    I have a few volumes setup as SharePoints in the Server.app, and a bring a few MacBookPro's to work each day. I'd like them to automount the network volumes once they connect to the network, but have not figured out how to do this.
    Many thanks!

    You're saying 'automounts' but this is usually done to support something like network home directories. What you're probably refering to is called a network mount.
    You can include network mounts as part of a configuration profile that you push to devices.
    However, your mileage may vary with this feature. I've found it to be buggy in Lion but I did eventually get it to work.

  • Hal automount question

    I new to arch and so far i like it!
    I am dealing wuth hal to automount my other partitions, i when i use nautilus i have listed at list 8 partitions/devices wich HAL mount.
    How can i configure this, to only mount what i want? for example i have sabayon linux installed in one partion and i don't want hal to mount this, but at the same time, i want my mp4 player or my dvd device automounted.
    PD: In this case is better if i use fstab?
    thanks ain advance! and thanks for this great OS

    TSP, I ended up trying this "outdated" tip and it worked.
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL
    As root, create a file named 90-user-methods.fdi in /etc/hal/fdi/policy. Then paste the following in
    <xml>
    <deviceinfo>
    <device>
    <match>
    <merge>true</merge>
    <match>
    <merge>false</merge>
    <merge>true</merge>
    </match>
    </match>
    </device>
    </deviceinfo>
    Then restart HAL, /etc/rc.d/hal restart.
    Cheers.

  • Automount/autofs problem with xffm

    I am setting up arch with xfce4.
    Xfce4 is working ok.
    Tried to install autofs/automount.
    Followed the instructions on the wiki to the letter!
    Have come up, however, with a weird problem.
    None of the /media directories come up in xffm (cdrom, floppy or usbstick) whether as root or normal user.
    They come up fine in a terminal (either as root or user) but not in xffm.
    They only come up in xffm if I am currently at the same directory in a terminal window.
    This is independent of whether xffm is run as root or normal user.
    Seems very weird to a newbie to arch.
    Can anyone tell me what is going on?
    Peter

    It appears that autofs only works properly with the command line and not graphical file managers.
    I tried loading and using nautilus as well but got exactly the same behaviour.
    automount only works in a graphical environment after the removable media has been recognised from the command line.
    This might just be a problem with the xfce winodw manager.
    Has anybody got automount working directly from a graphical file manager?

  • Automount SMB volumes in Leopard (autofs)

    Can someone give a brief example on how to automount SMB volumes in Leopard using the new autofs automounter? I have heard that /etc/fstab is no longer support in 10.5, correct? I ned the mounts to show up in the Finder. I dont care if the mount point is /Servers or not as long as I can see the volumes in Finder.
    Im a tad confused. According to automount, /etc/fstab is still available, but doesnt exist.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks VK
    I currently push out all my SMB volumes to my Mac desktops via MCX and Open Directory. MCX basically sets the SMB volumes as Login Items as you suggested (but of course it automounts then for all my users based on computer and user/group policies which is great for centrally manging hundreds of computers). Example: users in the "Managers" group get a MCX login item for the "Managers" SMB volume, so they mount the "Mangers" share when they log into their Macs. If they are off the LAN/domain, then the Finder displays an error after x minutes attempting to connect. This works fine, but it gets clunky for users with laptops. When the laptop users aren't on the network (i.e.; on the road, etc) they get Finder errors when the login items fail ("the login item cant be found"). I cant figure out a way to suppress the Finder errors for the laptop users so my next workaround is to figure out a better way to dynamically mount the volumes and avoid the Finder from throwing login item errors that annoy my users.
    Id love to figure out a way to tie autofs and OD together so that the Macs will mount the proper SMB volumes by simply reading OD groups and mounting the volumes as needed. Example: Users in the "Managers" group automount the "Managers" SMB share at login (if the domain can be reached and the Mac is on the LAN). Likewise, members in the IT group will automount the "IT Dept" SMB share at login , etc. This assumes the users have the proper memberships and permissions and that the Macs are able to query DS and find the SMB server etc.
    Any ideas?

  • Problem with automount

    Hi,
    Sorry for putting hp-ux related question. But no choice. I have configure hp-ux ldap client with solaris9 ds 5.2. i have created directories for automount on same solaris.this is configuration i have done in hp-ux11.0. thanking you,

    You probably already realized this, but the /etc/auto_master has an invalid entry:
    /home siroe:/ldap/& -nobrowse
    That line should be in your /etc/auto_home file and the following should be in /etc/auto_master:
    /home /etc/auto_home
    Also, check that siroe:/ldap is a valid directory and shared out in /etc/dfs/dfstab. See the manpages for dfstab and share.

  • Autofs direct mapping not working

    Hi there,
    I'm currently migrating from Gentoo and hit a problem. I'm trying to use an autofs feature called 'Direct mapping'. It allows one to use map one directory to a specific server. Combined with ghosting, one can use this to do a on demand bind setup. This is useful if the target is not always available (like an encrypted disk that is not active).
    Relevant auto.master snippet:
    /etc/autofs/auto.bind_1 \
    -fstype=auto,--timeout=5 \
    defaults,nodev,noexec,nomand,nosuid,noiversion,\
    noatime,bind
    and the full contents of auto.bind_1:
    /home/gedeeld/secure :/home/secure/gedeeld
    /opt/32bit_chroot/home/secure/ronald :/home/secure/ronald
    Automounter just won't list it:
    [root@Alpha autofs]# automount -f -v
    Starting automounter version 5.0.7, master map auto.master
    using kernel protocol version 5.02
    syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ]
    mounted indirect on /var/autofs/cifs with timeout 5, freq 2 seconds
    ghosting enabled
    mounted indirect on /var/autofs/dev with timeout 10, freq 3 seconds
    ghosting enabled
    This exact same configuration file used to work with autofs on Gentoo. I'm at deads end why it's not working under Arch. Autofs documentation is sparse, especially with respect to 'Direct mapping'.

  • How do I make nfs automounted volumes visible in Finder?

    Well, when you add a component, it's size is 0,0 and it is located at the top left corner (0,0 point of its parent container). When you call pack(), the components are resized, and their placement is set.
    So what you did wrong is that you're trying to repaint the panel1 - therefore panel2 never appears, since its dimension is 0,0.
    THere's a solution though. Call the validate method of the container you add the component to - that is, jPanel1.validate() instead of its repaint method. Then panel1 will resize the components it contains. Then its not necessary to call the repaint, it'll be done automatically, because the container's graphics area is not valid any more after the validation.
    private void jButton1ActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
         // Add your handling code here:
         JPanel2 p = new JPanel2();
         jPanel1.add(p);
         // jPanel1.repaint();
         jPanel1.validate();
    }

  • HOW-TO: Integrating Snow Leopard w/LDAP & Automounter

    I just finished a week-long personal project where I figured out how to get my three Snow Leopard Macs at home to authenticate against an Ubuntu 9.10 Linux LDAP server (running slapd 2.4.18). It also uses autofs/automounter to automatically mount each user's home directory to when the login to an LDAP account.
    There's not a lot of documentation about how to do this out there, so I thought I'd post it here in order to give back to the community:
    http://www.backupcentral.com/content/view/306/47/

    Is there a way to do this for Macs connected to a PC network? How do I get the Mac to mount a Win shared folder automatically using the username and password of the person logging in tot he Mac. Also, is there a way to invisibly hide the volume (without disconnecting it)from prying eyes on the Mac? I know it can be done thru the Finder->Preferences->Connected Servers but this isn't a foolproof view of hiding it because the user can still always turn this feature on again and can also "see" the volume mounted on the sidebar.
    On the PC side "hiding" shared volumes from public/user view was possible while being able to retain access if you knew the exact "path" the hidden server/folder/file.

  • How delete map -static on

    Hi guys,
    I need your help....
    I don't have a good experience with MAC
    My iMac (21.5 pollici, Metà 2011) 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3  Yosemite
    I have a NAS storage (network connection) that I shared through a NFS connection (NFS manager) that now I can't manage for software restrictions.
    In meantime even I changed the network range (new fibre router).
    With the mount command I have this result:
    computer-2:~ Stefano$ mount
    /dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
    devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
    map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
    map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    map -static on /Nas_public (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    map -static on /Nas_backup2 (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    map -static on /Nas_vivi1 (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    map -static on /Nas_cri (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    /dev/disk1s2 on /Volumes/Senza titolo (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)
    computer-2:~ Stefano$
    How can I delete the entries relative the NAS? I checked in fstab.hd file, but it is empty!!!
    Moreover how can I mount the NAS with the new IP range?
    What is the correct string ??
    Thank you in advance

  • Boot drive not found (folder with blinking ?, etc)

    Ok, I'll give some background. I may be misquoting some of the error messages, but I'll try to be as close as possible...
    This is on a Early 2011 15" MBP running 10.9.1. Harddrive has been replaced with an SSD.
    I was running low on space so I deleted a bunch of stuff - all form my home folder. Noticed that the free space wasn't there and I figured, hey, Filevault, so I rebooted to give it a chance. No problem,rebooted and there was a lot more disk space. For some reason I then decided it'd be a good idea to run Disk Utility and do a Verify on the disk. That's when the problems started.
    Verify told me I should run a repair, so I did. Repair told me it can't repair the disk right now, but that I should reboot, hold down CMD+R and use the Disk Utility from THERE to do the repair.
    So I did. Rebooted, CMD+R, Recovery, Disk Utility, Repair.
    The Repair in there told me "Live File System Repair is not supported" or something to that effect.
    So I figured I'd reboot and google that.
    Only after that, I get the flashing question-mark folder.
    So I figure it just forgot where the startup disk is. I power off and power back on while holding Option.
    And the only option it gives me is "Internet Recovery".
    I tried a whole bunch of times. Nothing. Eventually I went into Internet Recovery, ran THAT Disk Utility. That sees my drive just fine. I can double-click and enter the password tolet it access it, and I was even able to run the repair then! (it found a couple of very minor things). I ran repair permissions, too, just for good measure.
    When I quit recovery it told me I might want ot choose a startup disk. Perfect! And the only one offered is my drive (even has it custom icon). I choose that and recovery tells me it's "About to boot 10.9.1 from Mr. Harddrive".
    ...and then I get the flashing questionmark again, and Option-boot does not show that drive. Oh, I tried resetting the PROM at some point, too.
    Right now I've got that machine booted from an external drive which happens to have OS X on it. I can fully access the system drive, all the data is intact, no problems at all. But I'd still like to, you know, be able to boot from it.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Here you go; the drive that I can't get too boot is /dev/disk3 (Mr SSD) but it looks like it's showing up as /dev/disk0 too?... I have no other 256GB drives in the system. I'm not sure why it's showing up like that and with slightly different sizes (maybe filevault?)

  • External Hard Disc won't mount - Partition Map error.  Can't repair with Disk Utility

    Happy New Year all and thanks in advance for any support/advise.
    I have some important data on an external drive that does not seem to want to mount.  The drive is a 500 GB Seagate connected via USB.  I am currently on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Yosemity 10.10.1
    What I've tried:
    Multiple computers - connected the drive to various apple computers with the same result.
    New enclosure:  I have removed the actual HD from the enclosure and connected it using a new one.
    Disk Utility:  Verifying Disc reports the following error:  'Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found.'  Screenshot below:
    I have searched this and other forums and run a few commands in Terminal that seem relevant to the issue, but am out of my depth in terms of interpreting the results.  Thank again for your attention!!!
    Commands run in Terminal:
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
    mount
    diskutil info disk1

    Select the disk1s1 volume under the main drive entry, then click on the Mount icon in the Disk Utility toolbar if it goes active and see if a volume then mounts on your Desktop. If it does not, then you need to reformat the drive. And, you cannot access the volume in order to copy your data somewhere else. If you are willing to spend money on the problem, then you can always try using a software recovery utility:
    General File Recovery
    If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
    The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine

    I have a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2 Yosemite. My external hard drive no longer appears on my screen or in Time Machine. I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering  "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount"  and "diskutil info disk2."  Then I entered the command "sudo got show disk1."   I am sure I have made the problem worse. Can you give me some help?  Thank you. blelambert

    racergirl,
    have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference with the heat?

  • I can't write to my Drobo

    I have a new iMac (like this):
    I am trying to connect the Drobo that I used to use with my Windows Computer.  It has 4 drives @ 3TB each, and the whole drive is over half full, so I am not terribly interested in the cost that it would take to "back up" that whole disk pack.  It took some shenanigans (reboots of both the drive and the computer; disconnections, and reconnections; fiddling around with MAC Disk Utility) to get it to show up in Finder at all.  I still have issues with it unmounting and needing to remount it, but that's not my main issue.
    THE REAL PROBLEM:
    Though I can get the Drobo to show up in finder, and I can read from it, I can't write to it.  Based on some earlier searching I tried this terminal command, which helped it to show up in finder, but didn't seem to affect it's being read-only:
    new-host-3:~ davidholcomb$ getfileinfo /Volumes/Drobo
    directory: "/Volumes/Drobo"
    attributes: avbstclinmedz
    created: 12/10/2012 19:06:46
    modified: 09/11/2014 03:37:07
    Looking at another thread (partition map check failed because no slices were found), which I wandered into because I was getting this error in Disk Utility upon running Verify Disk because I got a failure when I tried to "mount" the drive in Disk Utility:
    This thread suggested I try a couple additional Terminal Commands, which I will post the results of here:

    Can anyone help me with a next step to make this drive read/writeable?

    Turns out that the Drobo needs to be plugged straight into computer. I had it via hub. Though it has worked for the past couple weeks in this configuration, the new update pushed it over the edge, I guess. Plugged in directly and working fine.
