Automate combining PDF files based on a text list of URL's

I'm wondering how I could automate the combination of PDF files into one, using a list a URL's in a text file (one URL per line, each pointing to a PDF file).
I need to periodically rebuild a combination of PDF files, with the URL's staying the same, but the files behind getting updated. I'm not a Javascript developer, so I'm doing that "manually" by copying and pasting each URL into the "Combine Files" window, but it would be great if I could get Acrobat to read them off a text file.
Thanks!
Corrected typo

I have developed a script that can do just that, but with locally saved PDF
files:

  • Automatically merging PDF files based on conditions

    Hello
I need to be able to setup a job with some basic parameters to automatically merge multiple PDF’s.
For the following group of files:
    1_a.pdf
    1_b.pdf
    2_a.pdf
    2_b.pdf
    3_a.pdf
    3_b.pdf
I need to be able to append the pages in the "_b" files to the start of the "_a" files using the number at the start as the match identifier.
I think the safest method would be to output a new "_c" file and maintain the original files.
I can see functionality to manually do this or merge a group of files into 1 but I need to automate this to deal with larger volumes.
Do I need additional software?  Any suggestions on how to do this?
    Appreciate any help.
    Cheers

You're looking for a PDF Parser or PDF miner tool (PDFminer) as a starting framework, and you'll almost certainly be writing custom code around that as parsing a text file that's effectively free-form and originating from multiple different sources almost always (always?) involves writing customized processing code and an on-going series of tweaks as the suppliers of the PDF change their ticket formats.  (Even apparently-simple details such as the time and date formats, for instance, can vary by geography and language and by supplier, and can derail common processing.)
In some cases that I can envision, it'd be entirely possible that the data you're after is actually located in an embedded image and not in text that can be parsed.
The best approach is to get folks to send you JSON or XML or some other format intended for interchange, and avoid the whole mess that is parsing or mining a printer-oriented format.
The other obvious option is to use something like Amazon's Mechanical Turk or some other explicitly outsourced help.  Depending on how often the formats change and how many of these PDF files you're dealing with and how varied the formats are, sometimes throwing staff at the problem can be the most cost-effective approach.

  • Automatically renaming pdf files based on excel data

I am creating pdf certificates using variable data from excel files with InDesign.  This creates a multipage pdf file with a different persons name on each page.  Then end result needs to be individual pdf files named for each person.  I can extract the single pages out of the main pdf ending up with however many files all named the same thing besides a number at the end of the common file name.  Question:  Is there a automated process of renaming the individual files using the data from the excel file?

  • Combined pdf files with garbage fonts

I need help with creating a combined pdf document.  I start with word 2013, and use the styles to create a linked table of contents.  Then Save As to a pdf.  I deselect the Options to allow the links to work in the pdf format.  Then I add other pdf's created from word, excel or AutoCAD.  Finally I add outside pdf's from other sources (i.e. manuals) to complete the combined pdf.  Some, not all of my AutoCAD pdf's will have text changes, boxes or the letter L, basically gibberish.  I did recently change computers from a desktop to a laptop.  Running windows 8 and upgraded Acrobat Pro from X to XI.  This is extremely frustrating as it just recently seemed to start doing this.  I work for a manufacturing firm and have created combined pdf files to distribute to customers, vendors, etc. on a regular basis, and this just started.  I don't know how to fix it.  Please help

  • Print Series of PDF Files Based on Table of Contents PDF

    Hello,
Background: Procedure "manual" that is composed of a table of contents PDF (TOC). Each entry in the TOC has a link to a seperate PDF file. When a user (in Reader) selects a link, the appropriate section of the manual opens, i.e. the correct PDF file opens. They can then print that particular file.
My question: Is there a script that would allow my user to print all of the manual, that is, all of the PDF files linked to the TOC, in the same order, using a menu or button on the TOC PDF?
    Thanks,
    Tom

You'll need CR XI or a third party solution.

  • Merge and Combine PDF files in a numerical order

    Greetings!
I'm using Adobe Acrobat to create a photo LookBook or an eBook. I'm importing and merging straight from .JPEG's and Acrobat work's great. The JPEG's are sorted by capture date, renamed and numbered as such: "10_File.Name.jpg". However, once I attempt to merge over 100 files I noticed that the numerical order of the file names is wrong. You'll notice in the example below that when viewed by name, the three digit numbers begin after 10. Well, in this example it's twelve. This affects to page order of the combined .PDF file. How can I maintain consistent name order to avoid assembling the finished ebook by implementing two workflow steps. Meaning the first step to combine the double digit numbers, then the second step to combine the three digit numbers. What can I do to resolve this issue?
    Greatly appreciated!

    Try it with a leading zero ( 003_, 007_, 008_, 010_, 011_, and 012_ ).
    Be well...

  • Size of pages in combined pdf files

How can I keep the combined pdf files from changing sizes in the newly created pdf. If the combining tool doesn't allow me to save the original pdf file size, it's of very little use to me. Can someone help me ?

You are saying that the PDF pages change size when combined? Ok, what were the sizes before and after? You can check the exact size by holding the mouse at the extreme bottom left of the page until the size appears.

  • The function to combine pdf files and the function to add bookmarks stopped working in 10.x

We had VBA scripts in Access 2003 running with Acrobat 7.0 standard version to combine pdf files and to add bookmarks. The scripts worked fine. Now we installed 10.x and the functions stopped working. Does anyone share the same experience?
In the scripts, we just call the OLE object with the code like:
        Set acroOrigPdfDoc = CreateObject("AcroExch.PDDoc")
        Set acroNewPdfDoc = CreateObject("AcroExch.PDDoc")
Then we have the call "acroOrigPdfDoc.InsertPages" and "acroOrigPdfDoc.Save" to save the combined pdf files. All these functions work fine under 7.x. Under 10.x, they stopped working without any error messages.
    Can anyone help me?

  • How can I get a monthly subscription for combining PDF files

How can I get a monthly subscription for combining PDF files. I have been able to subscribe in the past, but now all I see is annual subscription. I do not need an annual subscription because I do not use it often enough.

    Hi paige1186,
The Adobe PDF Pack subscription, which allows you to combine PDF, is only available at an annual rate of $89.99. We do offer month-to-month subscriptions of Acrobat Pro and Standard, but I think you'd actually come out ahead with the annual PDF Pack subscription, if you planned on combining files more than 3-4 times throughout the year.

  • Combine PDF-files using Indesign?

    Hi,
Is it possible to combine, lets say 15, PDF-files using Indesign and some scripting magic?
I know it's easily done in Acrobat Pro, but I'd like to skip that step and make it even easier for my colleagues.
Any hints, tips or links are much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Thomas

All you have to do in Acrobat is drag one file after another onto the same window, correct? Then save?
You can combine PDF files with InDesign, but then you'd get an InDesign file, so you have to export as a new PDF again. Sure, a script can do that for you, but it still sounds like it would take more time, and *definitely* not as easy as the straightforward drag-drop-save steps in Acrobat Pro.

  • Combine PDF Files Toolbar Button/Shortcut - Windows 7

Hello is there a way to add a button to the windows folder toolbar (see pic below) or a keyboard shortcut to quickly combine pdf files without having to right click and select the option? I would love to save a step since I have to do this quite often. Thank you!

You would need to edit the Windows Registry in several ways to add that functionality.  You can look this up on the web on the how-to portion.  There are also third party utilities that supposedly make this easier to do too.

  • Combine PDF files programmatically

Is there a way to combine pdf files from the command line on Windows by passing arguments in to an executable?  I have Acrobat XI Pro.

Not out of the box, no, Acrobat doesn't support that functionality.   You could, however, write a command line program that would call on Acrobat to do the work, however.  You could also write a program inside of Acrobat to do this, either as a plugin or via JavaScript.
