Automated saving of converted (CS in CS5) documents

Hi,
We are currently migrating our studio users (about 60 users) from an InDesign CS workflow to a CS5 workflow. We have a number of custom written workflow integration plug-ins that were written for us by an external developer in C++, the functionality of which we're trying to replicate using a combination of VBScript, ExtendScript and the APID toolkit. My current stumbling block is with the conversion and saving of documents. We present our users with a list of InDesign documents that are available for them to work on within our intranet. Clicking any of these links opens the corresponding file within their version of InDesign. These documents are currently CS documents. Opening them in CS results in the tab indicating that the document is "Converted" and choosing Save presents the user with a Save As dialog box. We'd like to avoid this.
As far as I can see I have two options:
1) Find a way that saves the document without any user interaction
2) Pre process the files so that a script runs over the all the files in preperation for the new workflow.
I haven't tried it yet but I believe that option 2 is going to present me with the same problems as option 1 and I won't be able to save the document. Does anyone know how to automate the conversion of documents from CS to CS5 in either of the ways I've suggested?
We have a lot of flexibility and would be happy to investigate alternative solutions.

You have 17 options to save as in Open Office, one of which is .doc files, yes it needs to be saved manually.
You may be able to default to DOC, but have not tried same.
Since Open Office is 99% same as Word, I use it, or Word, either one. Open Office is a bit less buggy than Word 11'

Saving to previous versions from CS5

Checked out the launch this morning and am definitely interested in stepping up to CS5 from CS3. However, I often need to exchange native files with vendors who I'm sure won't upgrade. Is it going to be possible to save or export back to CS3 from CS5 or will I need CS4 as a step in-between??

We won't go to CS5 if Adobe has decided not to do away with this workflow obstacle. The .inx system where a CS5 document has to be saved as an exchange document, which has to be opened in CS4 and saved as an exchange doc, which has to be opened in CS3 and saved as an exchange doc in order to open in CS2 is nuts. No reason to upgrade anyone if it means more of that.

Illustrator CS5 document opening with pdf prompt in CS4

When opening a Illustrator CS5 document in CS4 I am getting the following dialog box. The CS5 document consists of 9 artboards in this example, and when loaded in CS4, only allows you to choose one at a time as in the image, and only shows one in the opened document for editing. What have I done wrong when I saved it? I didn't save it as a CS4 document. I want it to open as normal so that all the artboards in view, and are editable.

That's an oximoron as in mutually exclusive. Artboards work differently between CS5 and CS4 and as Scott already mentioned, unless you save down to the old version, there is no way to retain all data editably.

Pour des raisons de retrard nouvelle formule et nouveau système éditorial, j'ai des gabarits en ID CS5. Mon système éditorial actuel n'accepte que la CS2. J'ai 3 numéros (hebdos) à sortir dans ces conditions. Ensuite : nouveau système éditorial intégrant CS5.
Comment je peux convertir mes gab CS5 en gab CS2. Je ne connais pas les extensions manquantes et je ne trouve nulle part cette question.
Y a-t-il une autre solution ?

Dans InDesign CS5, choisissez FICHIER -> EXPORTER -> INDESIGN MARKUP (IDML)
Ensuite, ouvrez le document en CS4 (oui, il faut une version CS4) pour l'exporter à nouveau au format INDESIGN CS3 INTERCHANGE (INX)
Sauf erreur de ma part, je ne peux pas tester n'ayant plus CS2, vous pourrez ensuite ouvrir votre document.
Je sais, cette méthode est assez longue et compliquée, surtout si vous avez beaucoup de documents.
Vous risquez par ailleurs de perdre des éléments de vos documents utilisant les fonctions apparues dans les dernières versions (texte conditionnel, références croisées...).
C'est la seule solution que je connais pour ouvrir un document InDesign dans une version antérieure à moins qu'il existe des extentions de Markzware par exemple.
Si quelqu'un à une autre solution, je suis preneur moi aussi. Merci !
Peut-être que la solution la plus simple serait de mettre à jour votre votre version de CS2.... Oui, je sais...

I am converting a InDesign CS 3 document to InDesign CS5 (end result will be InDesign CS6), this document uses hyperlinks to TOC and the Index.
I have tried steps below but when I open from any conversion below in InDesign CS5 it opens without the hyperlinks.
1. Open InDesign CS3 .indd directly in InDesign CS5 hyperlinks have disappeared.
2. Export InDesign CS3 to .inx / Open .inx in InDesign CS5 hyperlinks have disappeared.
3. Export InDesign CS3 to .inx / Open .inx in InDesign CS4 / Export CS4 to .idml / Open .idml in InDesign CS5 hyperlinks have disappeared.
4. Export InDesign CS3 to .inx / Open .inx in InDesign CS4 / Export CS4 to .idml / Open .idml in InDesign CS4 / Export CS4 to .idml / Open .idml in InDesign CS5 hyperlinks have disappeared.
I just don't understand in CS3 & CS4 hyperlinks are showing but when I open the converted files in CS5 the hyperlinks disappear.

Solution:
Opened converted InDesign CS4 .idml in InDesign CS6 and all hyperlinks are OK.
Now I need another script for "updatedcrossrefs" for InDesign CS6.

That extension identifies the most current Excel file format, a format that can be opened by Numbers '09 (and by Numbers '08).
A check with Numbers '09 shows it capable of opening .xlsx files when right-clicked (and Numbers chose as the application to open, when double-clicked (if Numbers has been set as the default application to open this type of file, or when dragged to the Numbers icon in the dock.
I see two possibilities for Numbers inability to open it and the message you receive:
1. The file is not actually an Excel file, and the sender has added the .xlsx extension to the filename manually.
2. The file is an Excel file, but has somehow been corrupted.
Have you tried opening the file with a different application? The open source Office suites, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice and NeoOffice can also open .xlsx files. If they're unable to open this one, that would point toward the file itself being faulty. You can download these applications from their rspective websites, linked in the names above. All request a donation to support future development, but only Neo requires one to have been made recently, and that only for the current release (which won't be necessary to open .xlsx files).

The general idea is that you colour correct photographs once, archive, and convert with or without colour changes. The archived photograph is unchanged - or we would be colour correcting the same photographs again and again and again.
If you have a photograph with a corrected exposure, you can open the photograph in the Apple ColorSync Utility, apply a colour space conversion to a grayscale appearance using the preinstalled ICC profile, save the photograph under another name, and place that in your pagination.
If you have a paginated document with corrected exposures, and any such non-scalable bitmap or scalable spline graphics as you have chosen to add, you can render the pagination as a whole to PDF through the same ICC profile, carrying out the same colour space conversion on any and all objects.
Caveat: If you intend the pagination for certain processes, in particular offset lithography, then you are probably expected not to render the type to grayscale, but rather to render it to single ink solid black. No software can determine what printing process you intend, you have to understand a bit about printing, and how to set up general colour space conversions in software. Ask your prepress provider, and if the answer is not prompt and proficient, pick another provider.

CS5 InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format

I'll be working in InDesign CS5 with no problems then at some point I'll double click on an InDesign file and a window comes up and says - InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format. Sometimes when this happens I have to completely reboot my whole system before I can get InDesign to function correctly. Is this a flaw with CS5? Did not happen with previous versions. It doesn't always happen but I can't figure out what causes it. Would appreciate anyones help. I'm getting to really HATE InDesign!!

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, but I did just switch over to another workstation using Time Machine. The previous system was Leopard. This one is running Snow Leopard.
I'm not sure how to parse this. When you say "switch over to another workstaiton using Time Machine" do you mean, "started using another machine that happens to be using Time Machine for backups and is also running 10.6 instead of 10.5"?
Or do you mean, "Used the Time Machine program to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6?" If you mean the second one, well, I can't say I am surprised that things are messed up. And that would make your problem rather different than the other posters, which is good reason for you to have started your own thread (and thus your own solution)....
I'm a little bit leary of getting in and changing things in Terminal, without understanding what I am changing. Plus this is a workstation at work, so if I screw something up, that is not a good things, and I don't have time to spend a day fixing things back up again, with the way our workload is.
Well, you can find a lot of marginal documentation about lsregister and Launch Services, but I wonder whether your understood the ramifications of messing with Time Machine (or maybe I have misinterpretted you!). I'd be surprised if you found another way to fix this, other than uninstall/reinstall.

I'm new, hope it's the right place to post and get some insight.
Does anyone know that Adober Acrobat X Standard support WordPerfect 9 PDF conversion? We would like to convert multiple WP 9 documents into 1 PDF file. However, I did not see such option available from the selection list... that is when I try to convert/select multiple documents, the list does not give me the WordPerfect as the source file type... Any suggestion is welcome.

Corel's WP has not been and is not supported by Acrobat.
Back in the day Corel used an in-house routine to create PDF.
A few years ago a news release discussed Corel using a Nuance routine.
Current news release speaks to Corel's PDF Fusion.
So, yes PDF can created out of WP; just not with Acrobat.
To learn what PDF creation or post-processing features Corel has or does not have you'll want to visit Corel's web space.
If you want amped up PDF manipulation / post-processing you'll want to consider Acrobat Pro.

How can I force Indesign cs5 to open cs5 documents when both cs5 and cs6 is installed?

We are using Indesign with cs5-specific plugins. Due to that we have both cs5 and cs 6 installed on our workstations. Trying to assign cs5 documents (INDD) to cs5, windows refuses to let us choose indesign.exe (cs5). How can we force cs5 to be the chosen application for .indd?

I'm sorry that your PDF conversion is working. Can you please tell me if you're getting a specific error message? Knowing that can help pinpoint the cause of the conversion failure. However, here are a couple of things that you could try:
Clear your browser cache (steps to do this vary by browser).
If you're using a work computer, check with your IT team to confirm if you have firewall/proxy settings that restrict the ability to upload files to the Internet.
Try another web browser. A list of supported browsers for accessing the ExportPDF service is available here: http://www.adobe.com/acom/systemreqs/.
Also, note that there is a 100MB file size limit, so if your publisher file is larger than that, it won't upload to ExportPDF.

EPS files placed in InDesign can't be saved in Photoshop until the ID document is saved

I'm wondering if there's a way around this problem.
When mounting an EPS images in InDesign that image can't be saved in Photoshop until the InDesign document has been saved.
Is there a workaround for this problem?
It doesn't happen with TIFF files, for example.

What Bob means here is that when Photoshop opens an EPS it instantly rasterises it. Whereas you can save an eps with vector shapes, vector masks and type and it outputs as vector, once it's reopened in Photoshop it's completely rasterised by default.
The preferred format would be a PDF as this would retain the vector shapes, masks, type for both editing and output.
A psd will output everything as raster at the native file resolution, although you can open the PSD file and edit the vector elements.
If the original EPS from the OP has no vector elements and is just a raster document, then it won't do any harm opening it in Photoshop.
EPS won't support layers though.
Whereas PSD and PDF (version 6 and above) do support layers.
