Automatic clean of Recent Folders list in Finder's "Go" menu: how I did it

Hi everybody. I just would like to share with you the trick I have found to automatically clean the "Recent Folders" list in Finder's "Go" menu.
It costed me some work but eventually it worked.
I wanted it to run at shutdown. If it were executed at startup it would need an extra command (killall Finder) to work properly.
This is how I got it:
Open the terminal and do the followings:
cd /etc/
sudo nano rc.shutdown.local
insert your sudo password
into the nano editor write the following lines:
#!/bin/bash
cd /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/
defaults delete /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder FXRecentFolders
chown YourUserName:YourGroup com.apple.finder.plist
Close (ctrl+x) and save (y and return)
And now some explanations.
the first instruction (#!/bin/bash) is just needed if you have an empty or not-existing rc.shutdown.localfile otherwise it should be just there.
YourUserName is obviously the name of your user whose Finder's preference file you want to edit.
YourGroup is the group your user belongs to. Usually it is 'staff'.
the chown is needed because all this commands are executed by the script as root. So the "defaults delete" command changes the ownership of the com.apple.finder.plist to root:wheel, resulting in the loss of your Finder's preferences at reboot.
For the same reason the "defaults" command specify the exact path to the domain to be edited (without the .plist part as usual).
The rc.shutdown.local does not need to be set as executable. It works as it is created by nano but please remember to reboot twice after any change in order to see the effects.
I hope it could be clear enough and somehow useful.
Please feel free to add comment, questions or improvement suggestion.
Thanks
Bye

Alright I have windows 7 and I tried downloading the new iPhone software at least 8 times now and each time the download completes, but then promps me that the connection has timed out. I am certain that it is not my internet connection because I have used several different networks. I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to change my internet options if that is the problem. I turned off all of my firewalls since I could not find a way to allow itunes to pass through the firewall even though it seems to be allowed. Thanks to anyone that can help.

  • Recent items list in Finder?

After a file has been deleted I know that it still appears in the recent items list in Finder... But if I were to click on that file nothing happens...not even a message to say something to the extent of the file is missing or deleted. I am new to Mac Computers and I am running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. So I was wondering if this is the norm?

AFAIK, it's the norm. Recent documents only displays ones previously opened, not their current status or whether they still exist.

  • My recent items list appears again after restart. How do I delete it for good?

When I turn on the computer, the recent items list still displays the documents and applications I worked with a few days ago. I delete it, and after restarting the computer, it displays the same list again (not a new list, but the exact same items over and over again).  Any tips?

Select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  If this is a current 4th (or 3rd) gen iPod shuffle, you should be able to see the contents of the shuffle by type, intented under the shuffle's name (still in the sidebar).  Select Music or Audiobooks (not sure where those items from the library will be listed).  The items will be listed to the right, for each category.  Find the items, select, and delete.
It's on page 20 of the manual
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_4thgen_User_Guide.pdf
NOTE:  If this is an 1st or 2nd gen iPod shuffle, select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  Over to the right, go to the Contents tab, where the items are listed.  Select and delete them from this list.
I find it more convenient to make a playlist in iTunes with things I want to put on the shuffle.  I then set up automatic syncing (or use autofill) to have iTunes load the shuffle from that playlist, automatically.

  • Recent Places list under Save As...

When I do a Save or Save As..... the Mac window usually defaults to a folder location for placing the file. Maybe the last folder I was in. When you click on the Folder pop-down window you see the path to the current folder.. .But you also see a list of folders and locations called RECENT PLACES. Can someone help with this? I am frequently saving emails and word docs back and forth to different locations. But when I do so, my Recent Places list does NOT show the recent folders I've been to. It presents some folders, all right, but I cannot figure how it has selected those. (If you type "Recent Places" into the Mac's built-in HELP search window, it produces no text!) How do you control this feature -- set default folders, control how many recent places are shown, and in what order? (the kinds of things we used to do with Boomerang!) I found a November 2005 post here where someone suggested removing some "Launch Service" pref files that are supposedly in the Caches folder. Not on my mac they aren't. Help anyone? A tech note somewhere on this OS feature?

    Hi, David.
You wrote: "I am frequently saving emails and word docs back and forth to different locations. But when I do so, my Recent Places list does NOT show the recent folders I've been to."How this list is handled appears to be a function of the given application, not a System-wide function.
For example, in one application I use, the list under Recent Places shows folders into which I've recently saved documents edited in that application. In the case of TextEdit, I can't determine exactly what logic it's using to populate Recent Places.
As you note, it's undocumented in Mac Help. The only documentation I've found for this is in the Apple Human Interface Guidelines, in the section concerning "Dialogs," where it is defined for both the Open and Save dialogs as:"...the five most recent folders the user opened or saved documents to..."and where it is further qualified by"Note: Recent Places (in the Where pop-up menu of a Save dialog) does not record folders selected in Choose dialogs."This may explain the behavior I've observed in TextEdit where the Recent Places are not folders in which I saved TextEdit documents, but other folders where the Save dialog was used in other applications. This list also differs from the Finder > Go > Recent Folders list.
Since the behavior can be customized at the application level (per the developer documentation) this would also appear to explain why, in some applications, I see a list of Recent Places that is specific to that application.
You wrote: "How do you control this feature -- set default folders, control how many recent places are shown, and in what order?"Bottom line: it does not appear to be something you can tailor. "Recent Places" either:
    - Works in an application-specific way, defined by the developer through customization of the dialogs and coding.
    - Is built, by default, based on other locations from which/to which you've opened/saved files using the Open/Save dialogs.
If you want to create a set of locations that will work across the Open and Save dialogs in all applications that use such, add those folders to your Finder Sidebar. You can then select them from the Sidebar that appears in the Open and Save dialogs.
    Good luck!

  • [Your Music] Remove items in the 'Recently Played' list permanently

Current implementation (refer to image 1):Items in "Recently Played" list are hideable via the menu button. However, these items come back when you reconnect the device to the Internet (or log into Spotify). In addition, items that are hidden cannot be unhidden until reconnection to the Internet or relogin of Spotify. Proposed implementation (refer to image 2):Replace "Hide" funciton with a "Remove" function.Removes the item permanently (across all devices that is logged into the same account).
"Hide" function can remain as long as there is an option to unhide these items instead of reappearing after reconnecting to the Internet or relogging into Spotify. Additional idea:Remove all Played History, does the same as removing an item, but to all items.

Updated: 2015-07-14Marked as new idea and edited the title slightly to make it easier to find via search. ;)

  • Strange device in list in Find my iphone app

I have just found strange device in list in Find my iphone app, how can this happen? Whom can I contact to check this?

    Hi Bucknamc,
I would recommend doing one of two things:
    1) As Gail suggested, go to Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone, and turn it on. If you are going to do this, you should also go to Settings > General > Restrictions on your child's phone, and select "Don't allow changes to accounts." This will ensure your child does not enable other iCloud functions, which would cause your data to appear on each other's devices.
    2) This is a better solution, in my opinion, since it does not involve sharing an Apple ID. If your child has their own Apple ID (you can create one at http://appleid.apple.com), you can download the Find my Friends app and add them on there. There is also a setting in the Restrictions menu to prevent Find my Friends from being turned off. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8

  • Options for Go - Recent folders in Finder

Is there a way of setting the default value to zero, or disable the Recent Folders menu under the Go menu in Finder?
    Richard

Clarification -- is there a way of automatically making no folders appear in the Recent Folders menu, so that I don't have to hit Clear Menu - i.e. clearing the menu happens automatically. It's not a big deal really, but I just wondered.
    Thanks,

  • Listing recent folders

I recently upgraded to a Mac Book Pro from a Power Book G4. When I looked for saved files using various software (Photoshop, MS Word and others) on my Powerbook I would get a list of the 10 most recent FOLDERS. Now with my Mac Book Pro I only get a list of 5 most recent FOLDERS. I have looked in the preferences on the software programs to see where to change this, but they don't have a way to do this that I could find (I can change the number of recent files, but not folders). I'm guessing since it works the same on all software that it is some setting on my Mac Book Pro, but when I look through the system preferences I could not find anything to change this. How do I set it so my Mac list 10 previous folders and not 5?
    Thanks!
    Pat

I tried that and it did not work. It only had documents, applications and servers listed. It did not have folders. The documents, applications and servers all were set to 20. I messed with them to see it would have any affect on the folder number and it did not. Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Pat

  • Finder Recent Folders

Just started making the most out of my computer this week by using terminal. I was wondering if there was a way (prefrences or terminal) to eliminate Finder's (menubar>) Go> Recent Folders option.

System Preferences > General > Number of recent items:  set to none.
You might have to go back to Finder > Go Recent Folder and select clear list.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • How can I get more than 5 items in my Recent Projects list?

After a rather horrendous incident with trying to do a series of videos all in one project using bins and shared media and a savefile that got *WAYYY* out of hand (20 minutes to load the file)- which I believe was tied to importing media from another .proj file, I have switched to a more modular approach with anywhere from 2-5 projects in each project and now a collection of around 15-25 projects on the go. Most of these are "work on a chapter, then change to another project while waiting for footage for another project" and several of them share pieces including multicam segments and sync'd audio.
Rather than importing from another project, I am using Control-C, switch to a different project file, then paste in. This isn't the most "Adobe Professional" style way of doing things, but considering that I lost several hours to trying to recover from the last project, even when I only needed to spend 20 minutes pumping out a rough cut, I'm not going back to that method until my next computer upgrade and until I begrudgingly switch to CC in around 1-1.5 year's time.
So the issue that I'm faced with is that I'm often using the Open Recent Project flyout and having 5 projects on that list is just not enough to be remotely useful.
In MS Office, the list is quite long and even in photoshop, I can get 10. That's enough for my Photoshop, but I switch projects using the Recent Projects list in Premiere a LOT more often. I could just use my explorer windows to jump around, but given that I have 5-6 explorer windows open per project most of which are folders crammed with footage, PSD stills and peak files, plus other non-video things I'm working on right now, that's really not the simplest way to navigate at a glance.
How can I get 10, 20 or 25 items in that flyout list instead of mucking about with 5?
I run Adobe Production Premium CS6.

I see a lot of people not reading the circumstances of what I said.
I did mention that currently I use the "explorer" method and it's kind of clumsy. Although I liked the idea of using shortcuts. I had thought about moving the files, but didn't think about shortcuts... considering everything on my desktop is a shortcut, I'm really not sure why I didn't think of that.
But I did mention that I almost always have anywhere from 12-15 windows open at any given time in my explorer. I am involved with management of 4 different companies right now, two of which are in startup mode. Videos are important for me, but not my only duty. These windows only go down when I shut down my computer, which happens on average once every 4 months. It is not a problem on a reasonably capable system.
Still, for a project of currently 23 files (just got increased to 28 and expected to rise to 32-35), and because I have had project files go sour on me, I keep some hierarchy and because I don't have 100% creative control over all my projects, I also occasionally have to do re-overs ie when a specific style of writ is nixed by a boss or customer. Those 23 project files also have version iterations.
So navigating 'at a glance' through a file explorer isn't always the most practical.
In the end, I'll probably try to find some time to re-organize my file structure using shortcuts.
Still, given the number of 'recent files' can be modified or is larger than 5 in: Windows Start Menu, Recent documents, Adobe PDF recent documents, Adobe Photoshop, All Office suite programs...
It's just weird that there's only 5 for a program intended for the kind of people that work on projects somewhat larger in scope than "hey, we took the dog to the park the other day".
@Jerry Klaimon - not sure what version of Premiere you're using, I'm using CS6 with Production Premium CS6. Recent files only shows 5. Photoshop shows 9. For my current workload, I'd probably want 10-12 and it would be nice if they could go to 20 or more IMHO. Look at History states. History states default to 20. I usually set this to 35 whenever I set up any user's computer. It's easy to choose what suits me from the preferences menu. I don't see why they wouldn't have the same idea for 'recent files'
@anyone who thinks I'm stupid - please feel free to insult me. A forum scuffle is often a great way to get the attention of moderators who might be in a position to pass this idea on to someone who could do something about it. I'm also anal, stubborn, holier-than-thou and not-as-smart-as-i-think-i-am if you want some ideas to get started .
@Steven Gotz - you are quite correct that asking is important. Probably a smarter thing to do before pestering the devs with feature requests is to thoroughly check to see if it is in fact already existing. Adobe products are famous for having features that nobody knows about. Most of the questions I have that Google or Lynda.com didn't answer have been answered here in the forums. Then once I've seen that a few hundred pairs of eyes sharper than mine have also come up with nothing, then perhaps it might be worthwhile sending in a feature request. In this case, I will probably toss a feature request in later, but I'll probably just use your idea of keeping a master project folder with shortcuts.
@MarkMapes - I do not have a problem loading files. Project files load just fine for me. But I have one project file that has a problem that loads a HUGE amount of RAM and takes nearly 20 minutes to open. It even takes almost 8 minutes to close it. It was acting as my master file with everything nested in sequences and I needed to spend a whole afternoon to pull those sequences out using copy-paste because bringing them in via Import Sequence brought the problem into the new file. I would file that under "glitched save files" rather than "slow loading".
@Jon-M-Spear - good idea too - although I did cringe a bit at the suggestion of putting things on the desktop. I have bad habits and I work very hard to try to make other people who have worse habits in this company to try to get them to not keep anything on the desktop. In fact, it's probably my favorite thing about Windows 7 that you can have a clear or nearly totally clear desktop.
    Thanks for your comments folks.
