Automatic connection to wireless before login?

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me how to make my Mac Mini (old PowerPC version) connect to a wireless network at startup, before the user is required to log in? It is running OS X 10.5.8 with a standard configuration.
I have tried playing with the network settings, but it does not seem to associate itself with the wireless network until after a user account has logged in. (Once I do log in, though, wireless association happens quickly and normally.)
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Ugh! I was hoping to avoid having to do some UNIX hacking, but since no one else has piped up, I figured out a semi-reasonable way to do it.
In /Library/LaunchDaemons, create a file called "com.example.airport.plist" and place the following in it:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/
PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Debug</key>
<false/>
<key>Label</key>
<string>com.example.airport</string>
<key>KeepAlive</key>
<false/>
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>/Users/YOURUSERNAMEHERE/bin/join-wifi.sh</string>
</array>
<key>RunAtLoad</key>
<true/>
</dict>
</plist>
This tells it to run the script /Users/YOURUSERNAMEHERE/bin/join-wifi.sh at start-up. Obviously, replace YOURUSERNAMEHERE with your OS X username so that this corresponds to a folder off your home directory.
Then, in your home directory, make sure that you have a "bin" folder for storing scripts. Create a file therein called join-wifi.sh that contains this:
#!/bin/bash
networksetup -setairportpower en1 on
networksetup -setairportnetwork en1 your-network-name-goes-here 'your-WPA-key-goes-here'
In this last file, replace the your-network-name-goes-here with the name of the wireless network, and replace your-WPA-key-goes-here with your wireless network's password.
The next time you reboot, it should join the wireless network automatically.
That did it for me, but I sure wish there were a more elegant solution!

  • HT4772 Is there a way to connect to 802.1X wirelessly before login?

    Users need to query AD before login but can not do so because it can't connect to the network until you've logged in.

    It depends on your wireless infrastructure. I have done this with a lion server running radius with Airport basestations.
    The key is setting up pre-shared keys between the basestations and the laptops. If you have Airports and a lion server I would look into the radius set-up.
    Otherwise I would look into pre-sharing keys with your existing wireless infrastructure.

  • T60 does not automatically connect to wireless profile at bootup any more

    Probably my rose-colored-glasses mistake again.
    I let the ThinkVantage system updater install most of the latest updates last night including the
    wireless adapter software.  Now, when I boot up, my PC no longer automatically connects to
    my wireless profile.  The radio is on and it is obvious it knows the network is there because it
    is highlighted in the Access Connections menu with a Connect option.
    It connects just fine when click Connect.
    It will still automatically switch between ethernet and wireless when I plug and unplug the
    ethernet cable even if I have specifically disconnected from the wireless connection before
    plugging in the ethernet cable.  It also automatically connects when I log off Windows and log back on.
    Is there a setting some place that controls whether it should automatically connect to a
    wireless profile at bootup?
    I love the brain-dead online FAQ about this exact problem.
    It says to click the Connect button if it happens.
    Well, duh!  What do I do to make it automatically connect like it used to?
    I tried unchecking the "allow computer to turn off the radio" setting as other suggested.
    But, my problem is not the radio being off.
    Thanks

    Hi sashton,
    When troubleshooting Wi-Fi connectivity issues, I find the following resource has the most relevant information:
    Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
    Furthermore, you may want to avoid giving your network a common name. While the following article (and excerpt) refer to iOS devices, the same applies for your Mac:
    Avoid giving your wireless network a common name (SSID)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4450
    If you were to give your wireless network a common name (SSID), users of your network who use iOS devices [sic] and are away from your network would run the risk of joining a different network with the same name. Having joined the unexpected network, they would be exposed to potential data theft.
    Because of this security issue, Apple maintains a list of common or ambiguous SSIDs, including the default SSID for many commercially available access points, as well as the SSIDs "wireless" and "default". If your network's name is on the list, any iOS device [sic] that joins the network stores the access point's BSSID and associates it with the network's SSID. Subsequently, it will only auto-join the network if the access point's BSSID matches the information the device has stored. This avoids joining a different network with the same name.
    Therefore, you may want to refer to the following article when configuring your Wi-Fi router:

  • PC will not automatically connect to wireless network on startup...

    Hi all - I have a WRTG54 wirless router with the latest firmware.  Windows XP Home SP2.  I have a mixed network with two wired PCs and one wireless.  The wireless PC will not automatically connect to the network. To connect to the network i have to go to the wireless network properties box and check "let windows automatically configure network"  Once I do this the wirelss PC connects with no problem.  Unfortunatley, whenever i turn the PC off and turn it back on the "let windows automatically configure network" is unchecked and i have to go through the process of checking it again.  I uninstalled the wireless adapter and reinstalled the drivers only and then ran the windows wireless setup wizard but the problem persists.  Any help on this would be much appreciated.!!!! Thanks!!

    First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
    Do not let "Windows automatically configure your network".  Instead do the following:
    Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings).  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  It should connect automatically.  If you still have trouble, in the computer, temporarily disable your software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see if that helps.
    Some users have reported improved wireless connections by switching to WPA  ( = WPA with TKIP)  encryption.

  • 10.6.7 fails automatic connection to wireless

    Since the 10.6.7 update on my early 2010 MacBook Pro, I have had unreliable networking.  I move between home and work, wireless and wired.  The wireless configuration is saved, and it previously quickly and automatically connected.  Now, at each site when I first connect to the network, it doesn't make a connection and on wireless it doesn't automatically connect.  I have to repeatedly disconnect and reconnect wireless or unplug and replug in the wire.
    This latest time on the wire, I tried four times, and it still would not connect.  So, I tried turning wireless off and on, and the wired then connected.  Before, I only tried unplug/replug the wire, and that worked.
    I've looked at the networking configuration, and the IP address and DNS are correct.  But, I cannot connect to the network.  No web browsing, no email.
    It looks like 10.6.7 introduced a fault in networking related to connecting wirelessly.
    Has anyone else seen this?  Any insights?
    Thanks,
    ==Leonard

    It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu.
    3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    5) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".  Note that the fix this step implements may be temporary.
    6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( _not_ <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
    These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try.  Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.  If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.

  • Macbook no longer automatically connects to wireless

    Hi There - I have a macbook (That I love). Just in the past few weeks since the last OS update I've had problems with my airport. Usually when you open your computer from sleep it automatically connects back to your wireless network. Mine no longer does. i have checked all my wireless settings and my WEP password is still there. If I click on airport and select my network I connect, but it doesn't do it automatically. I have seen a number of other people with the same problem....is anyone else having this issue? How do you solve it?
    Here's some other references I found:

    I am having the same issue here. I have followed the suggested fixes, to no avail. Here's a run down of my symptoms, attempted fixes, and the "fix."
    when coming out of sleep, my wireless connection no longer works. i can connect to a neighbors, but when i attempt to switch back to mine, nada. airport status shows it is connected with full reception. no internet. no network connect. i got nada.
    rebooted the router. nada. rebooted the cable modem. nada. rebooted modem, then the router. nada. (d-link DI-624. also had the Linksys WRTXXX)
    attempted this fix: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482 nada
    in order to establish a connection, i go through the following:
    - when the macbook comes out of sleep, i open safari and get the network diagnostic screen prompt.
    - i turn off airport, shut down safari, then turn airport back on.
    - reopen safari and get the network diagnostic prompt.
    - go get a cup of coffee, nature break, etc.
    - come back and my internet start up page is USUALLY waiting on me.
    the problem with this, is that the connection is usually DROPPED five to ten minutes into the connection and everything above is REPEATED.
    my solution? as much as i hate to say it, use the PC. it doesn't have this problem. Apple needs to address this issue with a firmware upgrade NOW.

  • Automatic connection to wireless network

    In FreeBSD I had my wireless connections set up in wpa_supplicant.conf and in rc.conf I had someting like: ifconfig_ath0="WPA DHCP". Nothing else. It would automatically connect to the first available network (according to the settings in wpa_supplicant.conf). I believe it also automatically switched over to another network, as I moved arround with my laptop.
    In Arch I tried the same thing, but I don't think it understood wlan0="wpa dhcp" in rc.conf, because it didn't work. It surprises me that it doesn't seem to be as simple as that.
    I have two questions:
    1) Is there a way to set this up as simple as in FreeBSD - without installation of netcfg or anythink like that - just using wpa_supplicant?
    2) With netcfg I have a long waiting time while wireless profiles fail at boot - one after another. Can I have netcfg do it faster - perhaps by having it do a scan and NOT try to connect to networks that aren't even in the scan results?

    1) Briefly, no. More specifically, you will need netcfg, wicd, networkmanager, or some other similar utility to automate wpa connections. I'm not familiar with FreeBSD, but based on the information provided, I'm absolutely certain that it is using scripting similar to netcfg. The only difference seems to be that they provide it by default, whereas Arch allows the users to install it or not as required.

  • Connect to wireless before logging in

    where I work, we have 16 Macbooks running 10.5.4 that students use, and we are having issues getting them to connect to the wireless easily. It's a windows network, and we are able to get the macs to connect to AD if wired; however, we want to have them connect to a WPA2 connection that we have set up for them. Is there a way to be able to have it connect to the wireless before a student logs in? Would this be just using a system profile?

    were you able to resolve this issue? i am having a similar issue. it appears that the wireless connection is dropped on logoff. however, there is a setting "Disconnect from wireless networks when logging out" and i do NOT have this checked. so you would assume that the macbook would remain connected on logout.
    this keeps me from being able to log into the active directory domain using the wireless network. like you i have no problem logging in to a wired connection.

  • Automatically connecting to wireless router at startup

    Hi,
    I am trying to setup my mac so that it will connect to my wireless router automatically at startup. I have 3 users set up and the first user that logs in needs to authenticate with the admin password in order to connect to the wireless router. For obvious reason, I don't want to give the password away.
    Thanks.

    My bookpro won't auto login to my wireless network at work. The first time it asked me if I want to make the network one of my favorites I said no. Now I have to use the wireless pull down menu to log in.
    It does not ask me for password information -- it is in my keychain.
    How do I make this an automatic sign-in (not having to use pull down menu)?

  • Automatically connect to Wireless

    I have a network profile setup in ReadyCom 4.0 for my home wireless network, however everytime I reboot, I must go into the ReadyCom software and choose to connect using the profile.  What is the easiest way of making my ideapad always connect to my home wireless network automatically after startup.  I'm running Vista Home Premium.

    Easiest way is uninstalling readycomm and using Vista built-in WiFi network manager.

  • Automatically Connects to Server on login

    When we log in to the Student account of some of our school MacBooks they automatically go to the 'Authenticate to Kerberos' box you would normally see after having clicked 'Connect' in 'Connect to Server'. They are trying to log in as particular students. Does anyone know how we can stop this?

    1. If the problem occurs with a particular user each time you log in no matter which Mac-book, he most likely has a link to the server in his start-up items.
    2. If it happens on a Group of units that are on the same "Computer List" or the Users are all members of the same login group, You most likely have an auto mount setting in WGM.
    3. The only other place to look that I can think of is a Login hook that may have been setup, but that seems out of the realm of what you describing.

  • Automatically connecting a WEP encrypted Airport Extreme network

    My Powerbook when it turns on has no trouble connecting to my WEP encrypted Airport Extreme network. My iMac G5 on the other hand requires a manual connection to the network. This even though my Apple menu -> System preferences -> network -> configure -> Airport has "by default join a specific network" with username and password selected.
    Why does the Powerbook automatically connect when the iMac does not? Both are sitting side by side?

    Well a variant of that article did work. I called AppleCare. They had me while I was still not connected, create a new location, Configure my airport settings, and lo and behold, preferred networks was there, I was able to edit my password for my WEP connection, hit Apply Now, restart, and Change All keychain passwords, and my network automatically connected on the next login.
    Thank you.

    DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO create a login script, where to place it,

    bind them to a certain wireless?
    We want to strictly do this through our Mac os x server snow leopard.

    can you help me create a script with this information.
    You led me to the right direction.  I will be using mac os x server and doing login script.
    here is what i typed up so far but i don't know how to make the file. I know the command to run throgh shell but do not know how to make the file run so when i put it in login script it will place this wireless setting on all computers.
    They are ging to be using this information:

    /usr/sbin/networksetup -setairportnetwork Airport atams F3fd+mi7yV

    I did this on terminal and it worked.  so how can i know deploy this to all laptops that are directly plugged in.

  • Connecting to wireless Networks automatically upon boot

    Hi there all,
    I have a G4 Laptop with a Airport wirless card in it. I have successfully connected to my wireless network in my home, but I was wanting to automate this process upon booting OSX. So what I want to know is how can I config OSX so everytime it boots, it will automatically connected to my wireless network(without manually doing it)
    Thanks for the help!
    jlfutari

    Hello jlfutari. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    So what I want to know is how can I config OSX so everytime it boots, it will automatically connected to my wireless network(without manually doing it)
    First, create a new Location with your Wi-Fi as the "Preferred Network."
    Create a new network Location w/Preferred Network
    o System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    o Location: New Location...
    o Name your new location: <enter a location name>
    o Click "OK"
    o Click on the "AirPort" tab to select it.
    o By default, join: Preferred networks
    o Select a "preferred" network from the list, or click "+" to add a new one.
    o Click "Options..."
    o If no preferred networks are found: Ask before joining an open network.
    o Click "OK"
    o Click "Apply Now"
    Second, setup AirPort to default to the "Preferred Network."
    System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    o Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    o Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
    Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    o By default, join: Preferred networks
