Check the AD manual first then hit their Web site to learn how it is supposed to work.
There is an automatic duck forum on creativecow.net, I think.
I don't think you access anything. If it's properly installed, FCP simply uses AD when confronted with an OMF file. But I'm totally guessing, I don't have one of those things. There are some AD users here but, truly, this is the FCP forum.

  • Free Automatic Duck .AAF export plug-in not compatible w/After Effects 6.5?

    Greetings,
There is a free export/import module for FCP that Automatic Duck produces for Apple that lets you export your time line as an AAF sequence. As most of you know, the AAF sequence can be imported in to After Effects and other programs that support AAF, and all of the cuts are in place exactly where they are in the exported FCP sequence. For those of you who do not know the plug-in can be found at the following address, " http://images.apple.com/movies/us/downloads/AutomaticDuckAAF.dmg.sit "
There is still an issue when importing a FCP produced AAF sequence into After Effects 6.5. Does any one know of a go around or solution to this problem?
I spend extensive time searching the film/video web community to find the answer, to no avail!!! I do not believe I am doing anything out of skew to cause the problem, but I will explain the steps that I am taking. First, I take a sequence in FCP that is CUTS ONLY, and with the sequence (timeline) itself active or selected (and not in the browser window) I go to the "file" menu -> "export" -> "Automatic Duck AAF". I save the sequence and it is parsed by the plug-in. Then in After Effect 6.5, I import the AAF sequence. Every-time, every way I have tried, I get an error in After effects that says, " After Effects: AEGF Plugin AAF: Error during parsing: Invalid document structure (5027 12) " and "Error occurred while creating project"
I really need a solution to this problem, because I have a cut that all green screen and of course is is not consistent. Exporting a QT reference is going to be a pain, so I need to get this working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I own approximately half of Automatic Duck.

    October 28, 2011
If you missed our mail last month you should check it out as it got a lot of people talking. Today we have a follow-up.
Our web site has relaunched* and while the overall look of the site is similar there is a dramatic difference in how we are distributing our plug-ins.
Starting today Pro Import AE, Pro Import FCP and Pro Export FCP (both versions, for FCP7 and FCPX) are available at no charge. You read this right. Free.
We are unable to provide support at the same level as we have over the years, but we didn't want these plug-ins to go away while they remain useful. So if you can make use of these plug-ins in your projects, enjoy!
Thank you to all of our users, working with you for the last 10 1/2 years was a truly wonderful experience.

I don't have anything to add to my original reply - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1433512. Which bit didn't you understand? And no, you don't need a folder for kaleidoscopes - you just put it in the filters folder as I originally told you.
    And here's a kaleidoscoped sunflower

  • Avid to FCP 5 with Automatic Duck Pro Import

Hi, I just successfully imported a full movie project into FCP 5 from Avid using Automatic Duck. Everything went pretty well but after the batch capture I began reconnecting my files and
ran into a couple of problems.
I should say that Automatic Duck is AWESOME. It saved me a month of work.
Here is the problem: As I said when I reconnect most of the time it is fine. But there have been some instances when I reconnect a clip and it actually shortens the length of the offline clip in the timeline. This is a serious problem because sometimes it cuts off dialogue that I need. A less frequent problem but no less annoying is when I reconnect and the clip is attached to a wrong scene all together.
I can only assume that it is the transfer of information between Avid and FCP project files. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks a lot for the help.

Direct your problem to Automatic Duck. Wes Plate who posted earlier in this thread is Automatic Duck. They (or he) will help. I had a problem with my installation and I got an answer almost immediately. Oh, the problem I was having. My client gave me the receipt number not the serial number. Please post back with the resolution of your problem.
It is a fantastic product. My client bought the export component so we could get all our audio automation info out to ProTools. A quick look at the error log showed me exactly where the problems were (nested material). I fixed the nests, rexported and it was perfect. This is a very rare occurence with software.

  • Automatic Duck import - can't work out which codec

Hi all - my first post here.
I've got some footage from an Avid project that I want to put into AE CS3. I don't know what the original footage was shot on.
I just bought Automatic Duck Pro Import AE in order to be able to work on this project.
Chosing 'Automatic Duck Pro Import AE' from AE's Import option, I then select a .omf file, but the .mov file that is created only shows as blank white.
I presumed that this was a missing codec, so I checked out GSpot, which tells me, when I import this .omf file, that the codec is DV/DVC. (Name: DV (SMPTE 314M)). Under 'Status', it says "Codec Status Undetermined".
Googling "DV/DVC", I *think* this is Panasonic. Can anyone confirm this?
I've installed pdvcodec.dll, but the .movs still show as just white.
Quicktime 7 Pro plays the same .movs back as a blank black screen.
Where do I go from here? Any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot.

I'm tearing out my hair here...
Thanks for your suggestions, but I'm still stuck.
C:\Windows\System32 doesn't seem to have any of the Avid codecs in it. Indeed, I've done a search of the entire C drive for "avid", and aside from a few other things related to Avid, and some photos of a friend called David, it's turning up nothing!
I re-downloaded, and re-installed the Avid Codec pack LE.
    Still nothing.
I'm running XP 64bit, by the way.
Do you know the filenames of the .dll files (is it .dll I'm looking for?) that I'm expecting to find installed from the Avid Codec LE?
That way I could hunt them down. My googling turns up nothing helpful about the path or the fielnames of these codecs.
    Thanks again.

  • Is this a proper forum to ask about Automatic Duck?

If it's not, please ignore.  On the other hand, here's my question.  I am a Final Cut editor with limited After Effects experience.  I am producing and editing a show that started out with interviews against a regular backdrop (XDCAM).  This became a green screen (replaced with white).  Six years ago I did a green show using Final Cut.  I thought it turned out okay (NTSC)  But since then I've learned it should be done in After Effects.
Yesterday I learned that with Automatic Duck I could import things between the two programs. I haven't download it yet.  I need to learn this process fairly quickly.
Here's the main question.  When I think of importing media into After Effects from FCP, I think of creating individual quicktime files fom longer original files.  When I'm  workiing in Final Cut, I'm importing long files into the browser.  And then choosing in and out points of these large finals to create all the points in a sequence.  So do you have manually creat short media clips in FCP?  Or not?  Is this what Automatic Duck does?  Is AE working with short clips of special media files?  Or does it also reference longer files (I don't see how the latter could be possible.)
Could anyone comment on the importing and exporting?

In FCP, export an XML of your sequence, or the portion of the sequence you want to import into AE to do  the work there.
In AE, after installing Automatic Duck's Pro Import, you import the XML. which will automatically find and link the media called for by your XML, then postiton the clips correctly in a comp.
Since Automatic Duck has made the download free, it's a no-brainer to have this on your edit system.
Note - although Automatic Duck stopped development at AE 5.5, it's working well on CS6 for me.

  • Automatic Duck Pro Import

    Hi everyone,
    So, general workflow question:
I need to capture media at offline quality (DVCPRO HD, thinking of using Mr. Ross' process of DV/NTSC for offline) and then need to recapture at full 720p24 HD for the online. The offline editorial is being conducted by a different company using Avid. I will use Automatic Duck to import the omf file, but the confusion is occuring at the recapture.
I don't use capture now, I don't like it and I've heard/read nothing but bad things about it. I am doing the capturing for the company because I will have the deck. If I do a batch capture, that will take quite a bit of time to do, if I do a capture now, I can't recapture (correct?). What is the best option?
Should I have the company create a batch list for me to use and then batch capture off of that? If I did use capture now, is it possible to recapture what I need by highlighting the clips in the timeline and capturing only that media?
    Any help is MUCH appreciated!
    Thanks In Advance!
    ~Athen

If you are going to be onlining a show, you would never use Capture Now. That is only for offline capture. You will be batch capturing. And yes, it takes time. This is why when we online shows it takes 2-3 days. One day just to capture. That is the nature of the beast, and part of the online cost that you pass down to the client. If they are used to the offline/online workflow, they are used to this time.
If you capture now it will not reconnect the media. You must batch capture.

  • Exporting OMF files using Automatic Duck

So I downloaded the (now free) automatic duck Pro Export FCP in order to export an OMF from FCPX, and I have a couple questions....
First, has anyone here had any experience with using this method to export and work with OMF files? I know it's a fairly new addition to FCP X, but how well does it work? Many glitches? How well does automatic duck do at creating omfs? Was the transition to Pro Tools pretty seamless?
Second, I tried exporting an OMF of my sequence and about 3/4ths of the way through, automatic duck crashed and the file was corrupted as a result. I tried again two more times with the same result. Has anyone else encountered this? Any ideas of what could be causing the crash and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Automatic Duck no longer works at all with FCPX- I believe it broke several versions back. And since the developer was hired by Adobe it was abandoned. In order to get a mix into ProTools you'll need X2Pro:

  • Automatic Duck and Field Dominance

    Hello,
Here I go again with the field dominance issue:
I am trying to import a sequence from FCP into After Effects using Automatic Duck xml import plug-in. (Highly recommend this for all FCP users who finish in AE!)
When I import the xml into AE, even if I have assigned FIELD DOMINANCE: NONE to both clips and sequence in FCP5, the footage get interpreted as LOWER FIELDS in AE.
It makes a huge difference, but I can't figure out how to import the footage into AE so that the footage can be interpreted as frames rather than fields
    Thanks in advance.

You need to edit or ignore AE's interpretation rules.txt file, it is installed near the After Effects application. The user guide used to explain this, this information must have made its way out of the use guide.
I recommend you force AE to ignore the interpretation rules file. Rename it with the ¬ character in front of the name (¬ is Option-L), any file or folder whose name starts with ¬ is ignored by AE.

  • Automatic Duck at NAB?

    Wes, you going to NAB?
    HA! Of course you are.
Small discount available for Automatic Duck? I'm gonna need it...
Hmmm...although maybe before April 24....Guess I will have to get it before then.
    Shane

Filling a need left by the host application is something that all plug-ins do, not just ours.
Different users have different expectations about what should be in the app, some expect high-quality titling abillity, some expect the ability to capture HDV, some expect volume rubber bands in their OMF exports, etc.
Developers (Apple included) have limited resources in terms of time and talent, so they cannot do every feature that every user wants, they have to prioritize. Since Boris made and still makes such great titling plug-is for FCP it probably didn't make sense for Apple to reinvent that wheel, so they licensed a titler from Boris. Before HDV support was built-in to FCP you had to buy a plug-in in order to use HDV. Clearly this was a vital improvement to make in the application, so Apple was wise to invest their resources to add the feature. Would Apple sell more units of Final Cut if its OMF export included volume information? I suspect that it would not contribute to dramatically more sales, no. The OMF export that is built-in meets the needs of many users, for those who are more advanced and require their volume decisions to go into the OMF, a reasonably-priced option exists.

  • Error (bug) collecting projects linked to AAF footage (via CC's integrated Automatic Duck)

    Hi.
I think this might be a bug. Every time we try to collect a project that has imported media, ingested from an AAF (with embedded media) via AE CC's integrated Automatic Duck (or what used to be Automatic Duck before Adobe bought it and integrated it into AE natively) script, we get an error such as this:
... and the project won't collect. The errors that pop up are always referring to Quicktimes that are pulled from the AAF via the script. If we manually relink each and every one of these media files, the project collects fine -- but not unless we go that extra step.
So, everytime we have to collect a project, we have to collect the project as "project only" and then manually hunt down every media file and relink it to the collected project.
Any one out there experience something similar?
We are using Mac workstations on OSX 10.9.2 with AE CC 12.2.1.5. Our media is storage on a NAS shared via AFP/SMB. Importing AAF's (with embedded media) into AE is such an a great way for offline Avid workflow, but this little bit of weirdness does put a kink in that awesomeness.

Just a another little detail. The file path that comes up in the error is the destination of the where the collection process is trying to dump the media, not the source.

  • Problems Rendering AAF imported Sequence(with Automatic duck) from Avid in CS5

    Hey
so I'm encountering some troubls with rendering out my whole Project. Everything from export in Avid to import in AE worked perfectly so now im working with the Quicktime ref files created by the Duck(Codec DNxHD 120). I was able to do all my compositing and even render ot some short sequences to show my Client.
But now I'm ready to render out my complete Sequence and it always gets to about 30-36 seconds and then says there is something wrong with the quicktime ref file. But if I just render that one image everything is fine....
Has anyone else encountered this kind of Problem and has some usefull advice?
    Thanks in Advance
    Stephan

Consolidate your media files in Avid to be in the same location and/ or even a single mixdown clip and re-export the references.

  • Are Automatic Duck's (now) free products likely to sway any more pros towards FCP X  .  .  .  .

.  .  .  .   .  or are there still too many omissions and problems with the new app?
    http://www.automaticduck.com/products/download/index.html
Shane announced it a couple of weeks ago but there was no real follow up, so do  I take it that the free offer was too little, too late?

Well, most of the Duck products are for apps OTHER than FCX.  Getting sequences and media from FCP to Avid...FCP to Smoke and After Effects.  Avid to Legacy FCP. ONE to get from FCX out to something else.  Nothing there go get INTO FCX.
The new app still lacks many many tools I need to get work done.  Besides that, it reinvented editing when editing didn't need to be reinvented.  I use apps that allow me to cut quickly, ones that I have known for years. I have no reason to try to spend months figuring out a whole new editing paradigm...especially when that tool lacks features I need.
    Pointeless.
