Automatic Timezone Weirdness

Hi, my application is going to be accessed globally, across multiple timezones, and up until now I've not enabled automatic timezone support, and just clarified all my date labels saying "Date (GMT-6)", as my database is GMT-6.
All my date fields have always been "timestamp with local timezone", and they've all displayed as say "19-JAN-2011 04:56 -06:00" (I'm using sysdate to update the time), and it's all worked solid and consistently, so long as you don't mind working out your local time using the offset displayed. In the database for that value, it stores "19-JAN-11 04.56.00.000000 AM" - ie. the local time to the DB.
However, wanting to tidy up the app for the users, I've attempted to use automatic timezone support in my version - 4.0.2.
It's my understanding that as I'm already using timestamp with local tz fields, all I should need to do is enable automatic timezone support, and it should work out the offset automatically, and display local times to my users. If I do this, all my timestamps set before I made the change display in the correct local time (ie. the time above is now shown as 19-JAN-2011 10:56 +00:00), but any subsequent times written display as the the GMT-6 time, but with a +00:00 timezone offset shown, and in the database are now stored with a -12 hours offset.
I am in +00:00, my database is in -06:00, and so it looks like something somewhere applying the offset twice, and storing the time in the DB as -12:00, when it should be stored as -06:00 still, so it displays through the GUI correctly.
Timezones confuse me at the best of times, can anyone help??

This gets very strange - I've faked/changed my timezone to run some tests, and I've made subsequent timestamps a minute or two between each other, with different timezones, and can see the following dates/times stored in the DB:
19-JAN-11 05.29.02.000000 AM     -06:00 test
19-JAN-11 05.29.35.000000 AM     another -06:00 test
19-JAN-11 06.30.48.000000 AM     -07:00 test
18-JAN-11 11.32.04.000000 PM     GMT (+00:00) test
19-JAN-11 07.34.34.000000 AM     -08:00 test
Through the interface, if I'm on the same timezone as the database (-06:00), I see the times displayed as above. If I am on +00:00, I see the times above, but +6 hours. Very confusing, though I'm open to the possibility it's me being stupid... :)
EDIT: On reading that, I get the impression the calculating and displaying of the offset and time is all working, it's the storing which isn't - ie. I'd expect to see all the times in the backend database showing in the same timezone, local to the DB, which they do when I don't have automatic timezone enabled.
From the looks of it, it's applying the difference in offset to -06:00, the wrong way - ie. when UTC/GMT, 6 hours ahead of -06:00, it's subtracting that offset from the -06:00 time and storing that, making it -12:00 time in the DB. When in -07:00 timezone, (1 hour behind -06:00), it's adding that offset onto the -06:00 time and storing that.

  • Automatic synching weirdness

A while after switching from automatic synching to manual updating of my iPod, I started to get the 'cannot read or write to the disk' error messages when I tried to go back to automatic updating. But not at first, only when I got to about 5gigs worth of music transferred to it.
I tried various advice online, including up Updated, reset, everything in sight. Took it to my local Apple shop. Still did it on automatic. However, I've just switched to manual after it reached the 5gig limit, and the iPod is happy to be written to. What's going on? I'd love to switch it back to automatic, but I seem to have lost that facility for ever.

  • Automatic timezone for Cancun Mexico

For somereason we dont fully understand, the governor of Quintana Roo (state were Cancun is) in Mexico changed the timezone for us. For decades we have been in -06:00 GMT with daylight savings time changes.
Since Feb 1st. The whole state changed to -05:00 GMT without daylight saving time. For owners of Apple gadgets we have to change from Cancun time, to Miami time, then (when daylight savings started) to Dallas time to try to catch with the correct time.
Can somebody change the record at the time servers for the new setting?
    Thanks!

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner. They will need to change their servers.

  • My mac keeps automatically downloading weird files

every 30 seconds or so my mac will download files with extension names like 73982ad.html and other 5 digit number combos followed by "ad". Is this a virus? How do I make it stop? I delete the files as soon as I see them, but I'm worried it's something bigger.

Both of those sites are on a list of known malware distributors.  They are extremely untrustworthy sites.  However, that does not necessarily mean that there is malware involved.
Do these files continue to appear when you don't have any web browser open?  If yes, there's some other software downloading them, which could be (but is not necessarily) malware.
If no, do those files start appearing as soon as you open a web browser?  Or do they only start appearing after you have visited a particular site?
Also, note that your e-mail account could be hacked without malware being involved.  That often happens with accounts on popular servers (Yahoo, Hotmail, GMail, etc) when you have a very weak account password.
To rule out malware in all these cases, just download a copy of ClamXav and run a scan of your entire hard drive.  (Note that ClamXav is the only AV software I recommend on a Mac.)  For more information about Mac malware, see my Mac Virus Guide*.

  • Timezone not working correctly

Hi I'am having problems with the automatic timezone function. First I went on vacantion an the phone did not change my timezone. This caused problems cause th hub tried to connect to my gmail account but the time did not match with my zone causing google to report possbile hijacker activity on my account and locked it down till new activation. So this is really bad and irritating if you cross timezone borders frequently. All this happened on 10.1.0.273. When ariving home I got a message that there was a bb10 update so I did the update to 10.1.0.2354 and now I have it on manual time zone all the time. cause when I switch it to automatic or ask it will try to put the kuala lumpur time zone, but I'm in the netherlands so this is really wrong.
Situation details: always used my dutch sim card form my provider. did use wifi overthere but nog 3g/2g. Now here in the Netherlands I'm back using 3g on my providers network. I rebooted my phone a couple of times, with and with out wifi. But even after a couple of days it still thinks it is in kuala lumpur . please help fix this and fix the timezone problem. Not so technical people will all have big problems with gmail abroad if this isn't fixed.
on crackberry there are reports of other people with non function timezone so it seems there is a bigger issue.

Apparently this is a problem with the iPhone 3.1 OS not working with Ford Sync. I have a Ford Fusion and I have had problems ever since updating my iPhone to 3.0.
    From Ford:
If your device has been updated to Apple firmware version 3.1 (or greater), then you will experience an INDEXING concern which may limit functionality of the device with SYNC, including longer indexing times (e.g., 30 minutes). Note: Earlier versions of the iPhone firmware are not affected. The Ford SYNC Team is aware and has been in communication with the Apple team regarding the concern. We will post an updated response once more information is known. We appreciate your patience and would like to offer the following recommendations for continued usage of SYNC and your device:
-Use the AutoPlay feature. SYNC will still playback content on the device that is on the "Now Playing" list of the device. Media control will be limited to the Play, Pause, Next and Previous Track.
-If the device supports Bluetooth Audio, connect to the device with SYNC BT Audio/Media Stream. Media control will be limited to Play, Pause, but can also be controlled directly on the device.
-Use the Line In input to connect to the device headphone audio jack. The media will need to be controlled on the device directly.
-Transfer unprotected contents to a USB flash drive. SYNC supports playback with full media control of iTunes formatted unprotected media.
-Allow some additional time for the device to index.
If you have any additional questions, you may also contact our SYNC Support team via chat, e-mail, or phone. Thanks.

  • Timezone issue

    Hi,
I am based in Sydney, Australia and have the database with APEX runing here and Database timezone set to AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time).
Now, In one of the fields in my form, which links to a timestamp with local timezone column, 23/11/2010 (23rd November 2010) comes up as 22/11/2010, a day earlier when page is rendered.
If I query that particular row, I get the correct value in SQL developer and SQL Plus.
I have set Automatic Timezone on for the application which was supposed to extract users timezone in browser but no luck.
Anyone ran into this problem? Any suggestions appreciated.
    My settings:

  • Q10 Notifications do not correctly follow timezone

Hi, I'm on model SQN100-3 version 10.1.0.273 on Exchange infrastructure with no BES.  When I travel between timezones, the notifications get all messed up.  For example, if I create a calendar entry for 1pm EDT while in EDT it creates it in the calendar fine.  If I stay in EDT, the notifications happens appropriately.  If I travel to MDT after creating the calendar entry but before the notification time, when I get to the new timezone, the Q10 adjust to the new timezone and all calendar entries reflect the appropriate times (as they should).  Unfortunately my notification comes two hours late.  It seems the notification system is not correctly managing the timezone changes.  The opposite is true.  If I create a calendar entry while in MDT and then travel to EDT, the calendar adjusts, but the notification comes 2 hours early.
I travel every week and notifications are consistently wrong.  This week I will try manually setting the timezone instead of using the automatic timezone setting to see if the symptoms persist.  I expect they will.

    Hi adventureboy,
Sorry to hear you're experiencing an issue with your Calendar notifications.
If you create the appointment using your local device Calendar (as apposed to your Exchange one) does the same notification issue occur?
When you are creating the Calendar appointment, are you manually changing the Time Zone to reflect the time or using the device Time Zone to create the appointment?
    Thanks!

  • How can I tell Apple to store my MAC-address of my Wifi Router in there location DB?

    Hello
Recently I bought a new Wifi Router and when I use the Maps App it tells that my ipad is located in China (Shangai)
When I also want to use the automatic timezone feature in the preferences app it indicates that my ipad is in China (Shangai)
I have already searched for a number of discussions (in and out the Apple Support) and their I found that the problem is in a location DB managed by Apple (crowd-sourced database). It seems that my Wifi Router is registered with a wrong location. :-(
    my questions :
.- is the somebody that can give me a procedure (certified by Apple) how I can update this location DB?
.- How can I store my Wifi Router MAC address with the correct location in this DB?
    Already thanks in advance

  • Calendar events off by 1 hour on iPhone and iPad

Since Sydney went into daylight savings time this week, events entered on my Mac appear 1 hour later on my iPhone, and events entered on my iPhone appear 1 hour earlier on my Mac.
Clock on Mac and iPhone both agree on the time.
Time zone on Mac (System Preferences>Date & Time) set to automatic timezone which is correctly displayed as Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).
Time zone on iPhone (Settings>general>Date & Time) set to auto and currently displays "Sydney".
Time zone support on iPhone (Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars) set to 'on' and time zone displayed as "Sydney"
Interestingly, the same problem also affects my iPad, and affects both my iCloud calendar events and my Google Calendar events.
Any ideas about what I should do?
    Thanks,

  • Messages and FaceTime just won't activate on my iPad Air all of a sudden; tried a LOT of solutions

About two weeks ago, my iPad Air was spontaneously signed out of Messages and FaceTime when I was using it to browse the web while on the bus, connected via Personal Hotspot on my iPhone. Since then, I haven’t been able to sign in to either Messages or FaceTime. I can still sign in to my iCloud account as normal for other things like contact and bookmark syncing. It’s just Messages and FaceTime that refuse to activate.
The error messages I receive vary between the following:
“An error occurred during activation. Try again."
“Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."
“Verification failed - The connection to iCloud timed out."
“Unable to contact the iMessage server. Try again."
This iPad Air is a replacement from Apple (quite possibly a refurbished one) that I received in November 2014, after the previous model developed a malfunctioning touchscreen in one corner. It’s worth mentioning that my iPhone and Mac are completely unaffected by any issues, and can also be signed in and out of Messages and FaceTime without a hitch.
I’ve tried an awful lot of things in an attempt to get Messages and FaceTime to sign in successfully on the iPad Air, none of which have worked, and many of which I have tried multiple times.[1]
Things I have tried in an attempt to activate Messages and FaceTime
connecting to different wifi in multiple locations (work and home) and Personal Hotspot from iPhone
signing into Messages and FaceTime with different Apple IDs (these won’t activate Messages and FaceTime either)
    wiping iPad with normal restore
    wiping iPad with DFU restore
resetting network settings (both after fresh install and after backup restore)
restoring from an October 2014 backup (still have to sign into Messages and FaceTime, still don’t work)
turning off the automatic timezone setting and setting the date and time manually, even though it was correct anyway
deselecting phone number and @me.com so purely using @icloud.com to sign in
running the activation process through VPN connections via London and New York
changing DNS on wifi to 8.8.8.8
updating to iOS 8.2 beta 4
I would love to hear from anybody who can provide the solution as to why Messages and FaceTime just won’t activate. Apple won't provide free support on this as the iPad is now out of warranty.

  • Windows 7 gadgets are not working anymore. Strange problem.

    Hello
I'm having a strange problem with windows 7 Gadgets, I describe it as follows:
    1. Drag and drop a gadget to any part of the windows 7 desktop.
This problem happens with all the gadgets, so you can drag and drop the gadget you prefer.
    2. Automatically, something weird happen. You will see TWO COPIES OF THE SAME GADGET PLACED IN THE DESKTOP! One of those copies, is showing the controls to close it, etc. the other copy, doesn't show any controls at all and it is glued to the desktop, you cannot
    move it.
    3. This happens with all the gadgets you drag and drop to the desktop, all them are duplicated, appearing 2 times.
    4. When you restart, windows 7 doesn't remember the gadget, so the gadget will not be there anymore and will disappear.
    5. The Fix it 50617 and Fix it 50618 DON'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
    6. I did all these steps, and also don't solve the problem.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2515657
    7. I tried other solution people is talking about in forums, registering the following DLL
        regsvr32 msxml3.dll
        regsvr32 scrrun.dll
        regsvr32 jscript.dll
    ALSO DON'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
    8. Restoring the system to the last point, ALSO DONT WORK. The last point was created in November 16th, 2011 and I tried to restore the system to that point and also don't solve the problem.
I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO.
    How may I solve this?
    I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits
    Thanks

    SOLUTION FOUND
This problem is caused by a certain gadget that is presenting incompatibility problems with Windows 7 gadgets, and it's affecting the behaviour of the other gadgets.
    SOLUTION TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
    1. Uninstall ALL, ALL gadgets in your windows 7, except those that comes by default with windows 7: Clock, Calendar, Money, Puzzle, Presentation (pictures), RSS News
    2. To uninstall a gadget press with the right button of the mouse over the desktop, select in the menu Gadgets, then click over the gadget you want to uninstall to select it, then press with the right button of the mouse and select uninstall. Do this for
all the gadgets, except those coming by default with windows 7
    3. When the task be finished, restart your computer
    4. Now you will see all the gadgets are behaving perfectly, and you can install also new gadgets without problems.
Try to avoid to install gadgets that could show a weird behaviour or incompatibility problems.

  • Timestamp of videos not consistent with photos - appear out of order - bug or user error?

We just returned from Hawaii and, of course, we have a mix of photos and videos.  However, subsequent photos and videos taken about the same time, which should have timestamps minutes apart, have timestamps that differ by 4 hours.  As I dig into this deeper, it seems all the videos have timestamps 4 hours from what they should be(my view).  At a minimum, I believe the photo and video timestamp should be set per a consistent definition.
I am determining this after I imported the pictures into iPhoto.  I have done the import several times and the results are consisent.
    Example:
    IMG_0233.JPG - April 6, 2013 6:14:46 PM
    IMG_0234.MOV - April 6, 2013 11:15:08 PM <----This should be 6:15:46 PM
Tried to verify the timestamp of the video and photo while the picture is on the iPhone…had to buy iPhoto for IOS for $5. The photo timestamp is the same as stated in iPhoto(IOW, IMG_0233.JPG is 6:14), but the video timestamp is just April 6, 2013…no exact time. Guess I wasted $5.
    Computer Data:Mac Mini 2.3Ghz Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory - OS X 10.8.3
    Iphoto 11 9.4.3
    Phone Data:
    iPhone 5
    iOS 6.1.3
Date & Time preference:  'Set Automatically'=ON
Travel Timezone where pics taken: Hawaii - GMT-10
Home Timezone: Chicago - normally GMT-6(4 hour difference from Hawaii), but right now Chicago is GMT-5 due to daylight savings.
My theory is that there is a bug that sets the video timestamp to the 'home timezone', potentially only when 'automatic timezone is set.
This seems easily fixed by doing a batch change to adjust the timestamp on all videos
Any other explanations?  I am hoping I am doing something wrong.

    2 things...
    1) my opening paragraph says 4 hours, but it should be 5. DOH
    2) i just imported a bunch of pictures and videos from an android phone.  Same issues.  The Android photos seem to be perfectly aligned with the photos from the iphone 5, but the videos are 5 hours off the mark(later).  Of course, I want to view the pictures with the time in Hawaii, not Central Time, so the videos are definitely in the wrong from an intuitive standpoint...as I see it.
2013-04-09 11.14.25.jpg - Taken at 11:14am in Hawaii.  This data is per the file as it sits in dropbox and viewed by my mac mini Finder.  Android puts the file on drop box from the phone, and I imported to iphoto from dropbox.  Despite the filename indicating 11:14am, finder says the file was created at 4:14pm.  However, iPhoto, correctly puts a timestamp of 11:14am and picture is where I expect it from a time standpoint at 11:14am.
2013-04-09 11.15.05.mp4 - Taken at 11:15am in Hawaii.  This was imported into iPhoto via dropbox at the same time, but it is showing up in iPhoto at 4:15pm, throwing off the sorting.
So, now I believe I have an iPhoto issue and probably brought this question to the wrong forum?
I have fixed the problem by doing a 'adjust time and date' to all videos, both from iphone and android, to be 5 hours earlier in time.  Now everything lines up, but I am scratching my head why this isn't done consisently between photo and video in iPhoto, and why I have not run into this before.....

One case has been presented in more than one occasion. It is as follows:
The accounts of Level 5 of the Plan of Accounts overnight changed to level 2 staying active. The origin of this event is unknown, it speaks in other posts that the case has been reported to SAP but without a definite answer about the why it happens and how to fix it.

  • A Verizon cellphone tower in my area is feeding multiple Verizon Customers / Devices with the incorrect time (one hour behind) when we are in range of this tower

A Verizon cellphone tower in my area is feeding multiple Verizon Customers / Devices with the incorrect time (one hour behind) when we are in range of this tower (in this specific area).   Our phones show the correct time in other areas.   Is there a way to fix or report this?

The zip code that this is occurring in is: 87102
    Specifically when I am at
    1001 Woodward Pl NE
    Albuquerque, NM 87102
Upon further investigation, it is happening to anyone with a Verizon handset, regardless of specific device.  I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and my co-worker has a Motorola Droid Turbo and we are both having the issue.  Anyone on a different carrier (T-Mobile, AT&T) is fine, and is not experiencing this issue.
It actually looks like the cell tower is feeding us the correct time, but its like it forgot daylight savings happened.  So it is feeding us the incorrect time zone/day light savings information.
When I goto Settings -> Date and Time on my Android device,  I have both "Automatic date and time" and "Automatic time zone" checked.
the "Automatic timezone" it is pulling from the Verizon cell tower is "Mountain -7".   It is correct that we are in the "Mountain" timezone, but we are currently "Mountain -6" (also known as day light savings).   So the Cell Tower things it MST when it should be MST DST
When I uncheck "Automatic time zone" and select my own, suddenly it lets me select "Mountain -6" and doesn't even give me the option of "Mountain -7".
So in conclusion, some cell tower in the area of zip code 87102 forgot that daylight savings ever happened, and is telling cellphones they are in the "Mountain -7" timezone, instead of the correct current timezone of "Mountain -6 DST"
Edit: Oh, sorry, and to answer your question, it began happening about 3 weeks ago.  We started noticing around March 25th, maybe a little after that.
