Is it possible to set itunes to automatically search for new media at certain intervals and add any new files from the selected folders to the itunes library
At present iTunes doesn't have that functionality. You can leave feedback at this link and suggest that option is added in a future update: Apple Product Feedback

I upgraded my version on iTunes and now when I connect my iPod, it automatically checks for new music and updates the iPod. This was a preference setting on the last version, how do I make this version not automatically update new music to my iPod?

Hi all, sorry if this is in the wrong place.
I have all my nedia on an external hard drive called Neals Media. When I burn cd's all my tracks go into this folder (along with videos).
What I am wondering is, is there any way of iTunes adding any tracks that I drop into Neals Media automatically into the iTunes library without me having to drag them over manually?
I tried using a script but it did not work. I really miss my watch folders from Media Player.
I have a macbook which I use for music which is streamed to an Airport Express.
ThanksiTunes doesn't support folder watching at present. I've seen a few scripts mentioned in different posts so you might be able to track one down that works for you. Folder watching comes up frequently in the forum, if it's something you'd like to see added to a future version you can leave feedback/feature requests at this link: Apple Product Feedback

Itunes wont automatically update music library from audio cd
PLEASE help if you can...
I insert an audio cd. Itunes asks me if I would like to import it, I click yes. Import appears to occur. However, the songs do not appear in my music library. According to the apple support pages it should.
I then click import CD (bottom right) to try again, importing appears to occur again, but still no tunes in my library. I have tried everything I can think of. That is why Im now here!!
What am I doing wrong?
Emma....to add to the last part... When adding to the iTunes library,- I need iTunes to make a quick-scan to verify that media I am adding isn't already in there,- preventing duplicates that make remedial tasks of removing* duplicates so annoying and unproductive...

What will happen to the organization of library if I removed the songs from windows explorer?
Background: I found it easier to identify duplicated songs in windows explorer as the songs will be renamed .... 1.mp3, thus enabling me to remove the duplicated songs; unlike in iTunes where I know the trick of showing duplicate songs, but you don't know which one is the one with 1 at the end of the file name.
Will iTunes automatically update the library without all the deleted songs, or will it indicate 'missing location' songs? Any fast ways to clear this 'missing location' songs by highlighting them all and delete all at one go?
Thanks.One way is to use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to check for dead tracks on start up.
Another option is with a set of Lost & Found playlists.
Lost & Found
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You can delete them all with a Ctrl-A to select them and Shift-Delete to remove them.
You can then delete the Lost & Found playlists.

Automatic Update wiped my library
Two weeks ago, the day before due to fly to UK I accepted an automatic update. Later that day I went into itunes to play music and found my entire library wiped clean, empty! Searched my hardrive for missing files but could find none. Then tried looking in windows media player and found about 20 tracks. Talk about stressed! thats over 900 tracks gone AWOL including those purchased from itunes store. When I go into itunes now, no purchases listed. I do not have the time to spend hours and hours to find solution. Can anybody HELP!
The library in iTunes may be empty but installing update does not delete the media files. Add the files to your library again.

Ipod will not update from library after transfer from one PC to another?!?
I recently transfered my itunes library from one PC to another using the ipod hard drive and according to the directions listed on this site. All went smooth and roughly 12GB of music transferred. After all music was successfully transfered to the library on the new PC I reconnected my ipod via USB hub and the dialog box popped up asking if I now want to associate my ipod with this new computer. I replied Yes.
As expected the program then deleted all 3000 songs off of my ipod and was supposed to then upload all the songs from my library (all songs were checked) back onto my ipod. For some reason all that happens is it says "update complete" and no songs transfer. I now have 3000+ songs in my library and ZERO on my ipod! I've checked all the default settings to be sure it is set to automatically update, all songs are checked and the box is checked to update checked songs, etc. I've shut down and restarted my PC and even tried several different USB hubs. Also, if relevant, when I connect my ipod the computer itunes recognizes it and it shows up on the itunes screen, but just for a few seconds. After it says it has successfully updated my ipod (I wish...) the little tab which shows "Chris' ipod" then disappears and itunes acts like it doesn't even know a device is connected.
I'm lost - I'd really appreciate any feedback anyone can provide. Thank you in advance!

In iTunes Preferences, did you update the iTunes Library to the new location? In other words, are you pointing to the correct location on the new harddrive for your iTunes Library?

Installed itunes on another computer and need to turn off automatic update
I have itunes on my desktop at home and it is set to manually update my songs on my ipod (I have more songs on my 80GB ipod video than on my desktop). I am now traveling with a laptop and just installed itunes on my laptop. itunes won't let you turn off the automatic update setting until you plug your ipod into your computer. I am afraid to plug my laptop into my computer because it will automatically update the music (wipe out all my music on my ipod). Can I somehow turn off automatic update (switch to manual) before I plug my ipod into my laptop? Also, I know there is software that allows you to move the music from the ipod to the laptop, but I don't want to move all that music to the laptop. I want to continue updating my ipod manually on my laptop. Please help. Thanks in advance.

If you set the iPod to be manually managed on one computer, that setting will follow the iPod to any other computer you connect it to. However, even if you don't have the iPod set that way, when you connect the iPod to a foreign library, you'll receive an message in iTunes when it recognizes the iPod that the iPod is synced with another library, and you can click 'Cancel' and still get to the iPod's Summary page to put it into manual mode, without it changing any content on the iPod. If it makes you feel better, you can also click Edit and go to Preferences, click the Syncing tab, and select the option to "Disable automatic syncing for iPods & iPhones" prior to connecting your iPod.

Hi all,
I was getting messages that my Aperture Library was full, so made an appointment at my closest Mac store, but have to wait 2 days. They advise you to update saoftware before coming in, so I updated to Aperture 5.3.1. When I open it, I'm asked to update my library. When I select that option, I'm told that my library is full. Now I can't access my library at all. What should I do to access my library? Do I have to uninstall 5.3.1 and reinstall an older version?
Another problem I have recently encountered ... all the up and down scrollers on various screens have disappeared. They reappear fleetingly when I use my up and down arrowa, but I can't always catch them. How do I get my scrollers back?Thank you so much for your patient guidance and screen captures.

My external hard drive is properly formatted for Aperture, so I am currently copying my Aperture library to it. That will take hours since it is copying 101 GB.

I understand that I need to clean some space on my internal hard drive and reformat the Aperture library to get back in operation.
You need to upgrade the Aperture library to be used with Aperture 3.5.1. That will happen automatically, when you first double click the copied lirary to open it in Aperture.
I'll also need to back up my external drive with a new external drive if I make space on my internal drive by removing some photos from there and store them on my current external drive.
What do you use for backup? If you are using TimeMachine it is better to have only the Time Machine backup on the Time Machine drive . In that case would I put the Aperture library and other data on a new drive and keep the old drive for backup. -
Office 365 x64 Click-to-Run Not Automatically Updating from Network Share
We are piloting Office 365 x64 and pointing the clients to a network share (see config file below) for updates. When we subsequently download the updates to the share the clients will not automatically install them. If we manually do so from
within an app (File > Account > Update Options > Update Now) it works fine. The ACL and Sharing permissions allow Everyone and Domain Computers read-only access (in addition to some other ancillary accounts). I've tried manually running
the Office Automatic Updates from Task Scheduler and left the box running overnight. I've rebooted, logged back on, closed and opened the app several times. Nothing happens, just always sits at the current version.
Anyone have any ideas?

It seems when the install finished it added an extra Office\Data to the path. My path should be \\hsbswpush02\GPsoftware\o365\Office\Data\15.0.4551.1005
but it shows
\\hsbswpush02\GPsoftware\o365\Office\Data\Office\Data15.0.4551.1005
If I edit the path and delete the extra Office\Data Office 365 ProPlus updates from my network location. I cannot figure out why it is adding the extra Office\Data to the path.
My config file looks like this:

have you tried omitting the \Office\Data element, from the Updates element ?

Remote.app (version 2): Does it still work in iOS7 or will I be automatically updated to version 3?
That is basically the main question I've come to ask (with some side commentary in parenthesis below).
After trying out iTunes Remote App version 3, I saw that it scrambles playlists (such as Recently Purchased), which makes my playlists worthless. For example, using Remote.app, it's no longer possible to simply play the songs you bought over the last week at the iTunes Store using the Recenlhy Purchased Playlist. Since I buy a lot of music through the iTunes Store, I naturally want to listen to what I just paid for, just as I could using Remote.app version 2.
But it's not just the Recenly Purchased playlist, it's all my playlists. Through the last decade, day in and day out, I've carefully orgnized hundreds of playlists that I've very crafted, song by song like old mix tape casettes.
They payoff for this work has been enormous. Since starting with mp2 in 1995, then mp3 and continuing through to the thousands of dollars I've spent purchasing songs through the iTunes Store and tens of thousands on iPods, iPhones, iPads, and computers—I've been able to make music match whatever mood or music was juuust right for the moment, making for great moments and memories with friends and families. For some artists, I always want to hear their latest songs first or I want to to hear top rates songs first. Other lists are about creating a particular mood for just about any occasion. I can even shift the mood in the room with the right music list. It's really been fantastic the memories and moments I've been able to set the tone with the right song, and most of this has been not the song itself, but the flow of music I've created by orgnizing music lists. That's a lot of work I've invested. So the order of the songs matters a lot to me, especially the very first song that starts that list. That's the song I want to hear first, not somewhere in the middle.
As of Remote.app version 3, these carefully crafted songlists are scrambled, making the App worthless. When I first noticed this I couldn't believe it, must be a bug. Nope, no bug, by design I found out. It's like when Lucy pulls the football away. It's mean spirited to take back features you've sold and promoted and people have grown to rely on in the workflow of their lives. So I downgraded back to Remote.app version 2.
((Actually, they're not really technically scrambled, they're actually presented in alphabertical order, which I think is really the same thing to me. Think about it: listening to an artists work alphabetically by title is really the most random and completely scrambled way to listen to their music. Or if you don't want to listen to them alphabetically, you can have them shuffled. Those are now the only two choices. Either way, the lists are jumbled, and like iTunes 11, several of the most powerful features have been taken away. In this case the exact thing that's missing is that the iTunes Remote no longer reflects the sort order of iTunes playlists.
I don't know if this is a quiet, update-by-update shift away from our playlists and towards iTunes Radio or not, but I would think so. Why else would you make it less powerful. To quote Merlin Mann Apple tends to "fire a warning shot" feature wise before taking something away. The Finder has gotten less and less powerful in finding files and folders by their name and size through the last decade.
I'm now noticing the same thing with iTunes, it's becoming more difficult to find the currently playing song. In iTunes 10, Go to Current Song would open the folder containing the list of the currently playing song, highlight and move that list to the top of the left column and then highlight that song. In iTunes 11, Go to Current Song will only highlight the folder that contains that song and nothing more. At that point you're on your own to hunt town the currently playing song. This feature has been broken—on purpose I suspect.))
SO—I don't want to be forced into Remote.app version 3 and have my playlists scrambled on my iPhone and iPad. Is there anyone who knows the answer from first hand experience?
If customer loyalty is as important to Apple as it should be taking away features in iTunes and Remote app will only drive old customers away.

DavidI like that I would be able to maintain my iPhoto library data for Faces and Places in Aperture, but am concerned that when the iPhoto library is "upgraded" for Aperture, and I decide I don't really need that program, the upgraded library won't work with iPhoto anymore.
The iPhoto library isn't changed in any way by Aperture. Aperture will import the Library and you can choose to copy the files to the Aperture Library or reference them within iPhoto. As long as you don't delete files from the iPhoto Library via Aperture (which you could do if you choose to Reference) there is no impact on iPhoto
Will I still be able to use iPhoto to access and organize my library, or will it be forever converted for use with Aperture?
They are completely different libraries.
Recently, iPhoto bugs make Events show up multiple times in iTunes when syncing for iPhone and iPad.
Fixed in the 9.1.3 update.

Like iphoto, Aperture can use the "single file library" or it can use a Referenced Library (just like iphoto can). Note that using a Referenced Library offers not a whit more in terms of features or capabilities. It's file storage plain and simple. Nothing more.
No you won't see the "same struggles iPhoto users have been seeing..." because Aperture is an entirely different allication.

Vista - Updating iTunes Library Error, Freeze, Blue Screen - Work Around?!
I may have a solution & partial root cause for the "Update iTunes Library" freeze / blue screen issue.
Details:
- I've been running Windows Vista since its release.
- iTunes worked fine under Vista since my XP->Vista clean install.
- I updated to iTunes version 7.1.1.5 a month ago and the problem started.
- After installation, iTunes tried to update the Library and after a minute or two, it hung and then went to a blue screen. I restarted iTunes MANY times over the month and tried to re-install it - nothing worked.
Solution? (for me anyway)
Recall that when you log into Vista, even if you're the only user, you DO NOT have administrator privilages. You are only granted those AFTER a request and authorization (I think this is where iTunes hangs). Now, this solution might be a stretch, but iTunes worked after I stumbled across this. I took two steps and am not sure which or if the combination worked...
- I was working with system commands that required administrator authorization. So the system prompted me, as it does everything, and I was granted them. Was this key? I don't know.
- I also copied the iTunes Library to my Desktop, started iTunes and let it create a new, blank, iTunes Library. I closed iTunes and copied my old iTunes Library file back from the Dekstop.
When I restarted iTunes, it started to update the iTunes Library and this time it completed successfully.
Not taking anything for granted, I did a shutdown/restart to make sure it was clean.
- I did run into a blue screen AGAIN at shutdown. But this time it rebooted clean and iTunes has been running perfectly for 3 days.

How do I delete iTunes 12?
I want to use iTunes 11 to access an older Library on its own Hard Disk Drive.
iTunes 12 installed itself, and the moment I opened it with one of my music Libraries, it updated the Library on that disks (and took forever—I have 27,000 tracks). (I thought I had automatic updates turned off. They are now! It has been listed at the App Store before this, but for some reason, this time it just installed at a Restart though I believe I never clicked on its Update button.)
I tried deleting 12, but it complains it is part of Mac OS! (I didn't really know this.)
I tried changing 12's permissions via Get Info, so I could Read & Write to the application. Nada. I also tried adding myself, and doing the same. Nothing.
And I tried to install iTunes 11.4 for OS X 10.6 after downloading it, but the install complained I had a newer version, and then quit.
It seems I am stuck with iTunes 12, and have no other options.
Sometimes Apple software *****. Whatever happened to Easy?

S.If you have a Time Machine backup or a clone from before the time you updated, you may be able to restore from there. The iTunes 11.4 download works only for Snow Leopard.

If that library is an .xml file you can move it to your desktop and in iTunes you can choose Import Playlist and select the Library.xml file. That will give you all the playlists on the old library. -
I've just had to reinstall the operating system on my Mac and lost my itunes library. When I plug my ipod in it automatically starts to update the library which will wipe out the contents of my ipod. I've seen in a few places that if I hold down the apple and alt keys while I plug in the ipod then it stops the automatic update. This doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know of another way to stop the auto update?
I am wondering wheter there are more hints in the dialog boxes in such dangerous situations.
I had checked manually updating, though connected to my second iMac, and it asked me whether I want to connect to this »strange« machine, I clicked yes, and the songs where away, lost.
Today I read, that music labels wants more money from musicstore, and I am sure there are hard confrontations. Though the matter that I may not poss two or more Computers to store songs in iTunes ? ??????? is strange. Sure, every thing has its reason.

However, I spent alot of time putting music into my ipod manually and stuff. And when I click on automatic it says that it is going to REPLACE CURRENT CONTENT WITH STUFF IN LIBRARY. WHile that "might" help my one video to get on the iPod I think it might undo my work at getting my music how it is.
So are we saying the only way to get videos you paid for within itunes to the iPod is by enabling automatic updates? Cause right now I go to preferences and all the video selections are greyed out. What the heck?

This simply means everything on the iPod willbe deleted and replaced with what is in your current iTunes library.
Since it is your library and your iPod, nothing is going to be replaced as everything is already in your library and in your iTunes.
This message pops up when you have it set to Manual update and change it back to Auto or when you connect it to a new computer for the first time.
Again, since you already have the songs/videos on your iPod and in iTunes, not much will be different.
