Automatically download mail attachments to desktop?

I'm trying to figure out how to use Mail's Rules to, as soon as it receives a mail matching specific criteria, to automatically copy any attachments from that to the desktop, then delete the e-mail.
How can I do this?

Paste this in a Script Editor window, then save it as a script, probably in your Library/Scripts/Applications/Mail folder, so that it is also available in the script menu when you are in Mail.

  • Mail 4.5 (1084) is not automatically downloading larger attachments.

Mail 4.5 (1084) is not automatically downloading larger attachments (i.e. a 2 MB file) without the user clicking on the SAVE button or the attachment icon (white square with down arrow).
    Before download:
The problem is that if the user accidentally deletes the message before downloading the attachment, and then views that message in the trash OR moves the message from the trash back to inbox, the attachment is lost and message appears garbled up.
This is not a problem if user clicks SAVE or clicks attachment icon itself before deleting it - message and attachment will be readable in trash and when restored to inbox.
    Question:
Is there a way to force Mail to download all attachment regardless of size without requiring user interaction?
    Thank you
    ig

Actually smaller attachments are downloaded automatically, or perhaps it depends on attachment type?
Try the same with say 2MB .PPT file .. email the file to yourself. It will come through as "click to download" icon (see image above). Trash the message (before SAVE or clicking on attachment), now try opening it in the trash or pulling it back to inbox and then open it. Attachment is gone and you get garbage - clearly extra data is there but is non-readable.
Not a big issue for a single user - potentially very big issue for an admin supporting large number of end-users, some of which are recent Outlook transplants.
Btw, I'm using IMAP server and I have enabled "Store deleted messages on the server"

  • I don't want Mac Mail to automatically download mail when I open that application

I don't want Mac Mail to automatically download mail when I open that application. Is there a way to stop that? I can't find it in preferences. I have Check for new messages: Manually.
Also, don't want Mail to automatically download on my iPhone 4S and iPad 3.
    Thanks

    Hi ctconnor;
Since there are no virus for OS X, I seriously doubt that is what is causing your problem here.
My suggestion open System Preferences then Accounts followed by Login Items. Once there deselect Microsnot Word.

  • Is there a way to remove downloaded mail attachments from my iphone 5?

I get a lot of large files attached to emails.  They download when I view them on the phone.  Is there a way to delete those downloaded attachments without deleting the entire email?  I'm having a storage problem.

I don't text that much and most of the people I do text with have iPhones and iMessage. I refuse to pay for unlimited texting, which is the only plan available. I just tell people to text through Facebook, etc. if they do not have an iPhone. Thanks for the replies.

  • Why does Reader XI download email attachments to my Download folder before I am able to print them?

After last update my Reader XI automatically downloads email attachments (.pdf) to my Downloads folder. I then have to open that file in order to print it.  Before, the attachment would open in Reader and I could print from that direct.

Windows 8, Firefox email client.  What happens is that I click on attachment links in emails, which are .pdf files.  Instead of a menu allowing opening of the file with Reader, the file gets automatically downloaded to my Downloads folder.  I then have to open that folder, click on the file name... then Reader opens and I can view the file as well as print it from the Reader menu.

I've been searching the web to try and find out whether there's any way of stopping automatic downloading of attachments to emails (as opposed to embedded images) on a Z10, if you're using a POP email account.
So far I'm drawing a blank.

  • How can I automatically open Mail.app message attachments after downloading

The subject says it all, I think.
    My wish #1
Automatically Opening Mail.app message attachments after downloading
    My Wish #2
At least having the Finder automatically default to the folder I just downloaded to after completing the download.
Is this an option in Leopard, at least?

Very clever. But unfortunately that doesn't seem to work in Tiger.
Then again, I stil presume that when you do that, a ile is still downloaded and appears somewhere on your hard drive. If you "save as" the file opened by preview, you probably still need to go back to the place where the file was saved and delete it.
Then again again, if Preview is peeking into a Word or Excel attachment, it may not actually be "downloading it" first?? Strange. If it was a jpg file attachment, on the other hand, it seems more likely that some sort of file would be downloaded to the hard drive as a result of that drag and drop of the paper clip.
I did find that drag and drop capability interesting, though. Even in Tiger.
Oh well. I have to start looking at scripts.
When I downloaded that Automator application that was supposed to "close all open applications", I was surprised that it didn't work. Says it works with TIger. ???
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/
Was I supposed to import it into Automator as an "action" and save it as an Automator application and then open Automator and click "run" for that action each time I wanted to use it? Seams a bit cumbersome.

  • Default mail client does not automatically download attachments when they are over 130Kb

    Hi @ll,
default mail client on Ipad does not automatically download attachments when they are over 130Kb
Do you know if is possible to change this setting?

We have this problem as well. Unfortunately after years of only supporting IE and finally rewriting our site to be standards compliant we are going to have to force users back to IE because of this issue. It's not feasible for us to walk users through changing the default viewer. The default should stay Adobe (if installed) until a more robust native version is available. I understand you want to promote free and open tools but if they don't work, it's just not good enough.

    Ho to all

He wants that ALL email's attachment are downloaded without click on it ( if they are big...)

I want XServe back in production.... :-((

    Rob,
Is your friend using a POP mail account?
In Mail>Prefreences>Accounts>Advanced he should uncheck "Prompt me to skip messages..."

To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to prevent the automatic downloading of the SD version when you buy an HD show.
You can, if you wish, suggest that the ability to prevent the SD version from downloading through the iTunes feedback page. But since the SD version is needed for use on iPods and there at least at present is no mechanism for someone to download the SD version at a later time should they decide they need it, Apple may just continue to force the downloading of both versions. If they get enough feedback on the issue, though, they may figure something out.
    Regards.

  • IPhone mail automatically downloads attachments when checking inbox, help ?

Phone consuming massive amounts of data. Noticed when going to inbox attachements are fully downloaded before opening individual mail. Can't turn this off. Apple UK says this is normal. I can't beleive this. I have received mail On a handset for 10 yrs and every model prompted me to download attachments. Never used more than 100mb in a month. With iPhone I'm now using over 50mb per day. This is outrageous as email on the move is a necessity for me however I like to choose what I receive. Feels like I have bought an inkjet printer that takes rippoff cartridges. I've turned off push mail , set download remote images to off, set preview to 2 lines but did not help. If I go to inbox for a few seconds then exit, a while later I hear the message indicator sound , check my inbox again and there are my new messages with full attachments downloaded and waiting. When I open an individual message the attachment opens instantly , proving that it has already been downloaded. Is this normal?if so, please apple release a feature allowing me to choose to receive attachments or not

Thnx for your assistance. You won't beleive this. Option 1 didn't work so before I went the clear device route I had a look at one of my associates iPhone. Turns out it does the same thing. We then checked another handset and same problem. Turns out both of them have been querying Vodacom because of massive data bills since they moved to iPhone. They didn't realize it was their mail attachments causing it until I pointed it out. The're milking us.
Those screenshots you sent , are they from a 3gs running os 3.1.3?
I cannot beleive Apple or Vodacom hasn't picked this up. Under these circumstances it makes the device unusable as a business tool for those who require access to email over mobile networks unless your prepared to throw huge money at a feature other manufacturers provide controls for. (no wonder blackberry has taken the business market here).

  • Mail attachments aren't being downloaded to Downloads folder?

Whenever I click on an attachment I receive on Mail, I want it to automatically download onto my Downloads folder. However, when I click on an attachment, it opens, but it doesn't appear in my Downloads folder. It only saves onto the hidden "Mail Downloads" folder that you can find by going into your Mac's Library. This is especially irritating when I open an attached word document, edit and save it, close the window, and then attempt to resend the edited attachment through email only to find that it's not in my downloads folder and that the "Mail Downloads" folder only has the original copy (without edits).
Under "Mail Preferences -> General -> Downloads folder:" I have it set to my actual Downloads folder so I don't understand what could be wrong. Anyone know what could be wrong? Thanks for the help!
P.S. I know that I can "Save As" the file and put it into my downloads folder, but that's a lot of unnecessary work when I'm downloading multiple attachments.

Select the photo(s) in the email body, Control (right) - click , and select Save to Downloads Folder from the contextual menu:

  • All photos being automatically downloaded by Mail

I've noticed that Mail seems to automatically download all photos that have been sent as attachments to my laptop - is there a way to stop this?

if your email account is POP then that's how it should be and there is no way around that. if it's IMAP then you can disable this in Mail preferences->accounts->advanced options->keep copies of messages for offline viewing.
also note that there is an option in mail preferences->viewing to disable downloading of images in html messages but this is a different matter.

    Fashion,
We need a little more info plz. With Safari, normally when you click on an attachment, like a .wmv, the file automatically downloads. What email program are you using...eg mail.app or web mail? Where do you have you 'download to' pref set?
