Automatically reposition layers/files in a grid by name

I've got about a hundred sets of sliced up pictures. Sliced up into roughly 80 pieces. They've been cut up in a grid fashion and then named logically & numerically by column and row. And saved to individual jpgs.
Simple enough, I can just reposition them in the one file. But that is EXTREMELY time-consuming.
Unfortunately they're not cut up like a panorama shot would be, so Photoshop's photomerge doesn't work. Because there's no overlap in the images.
So, I was wondering if anyone knows of a program or script that I could use that would reposition these images inline and perfect.

Here are some websites that have tutorials on how to use contact sheet.

  • Automatically open raw files in camera raw

PLEASE READ the post before posting a reply as i may have already tried something you think might be the fix.
basics: latest version of all adobe CC 2014 products including bridge 6.1.0
    win8.1
after i've imported raw files (either RW2 or CR2) it USED to be that when i double clicked on a file it automatically opened camera raw and then after my edits and i clicked OPEN IMAGE it would then open in pshop.
now they open in windows image viewer (sic)
    SO
i went to EDIT>PREFERENCES and changed the specific camera files to open in pshop 2014. (as there's nothing that allows 'open in camera raw')
so now when i double click on a file in BRIDGE it opens PHOTOSHOP and THEN goes to Camera Raw 8.6
    BUT...
i want to DOUBLE CLICK and open CAMERA RAW without going into pshop.
yes i know if i right click on the image it offers 'open in camera raw' which works, OR i can Ctrl+R and they open just fine,
but where can i set it so a double click (which is faster) does this automatically?
    thanks in advance.

What kind of TIFFs?  Are they multi-layered, for instance?  ACR will not open layered files.

  • Reordering or Restacking or Repositioning Layers

I'm afraid I don't know the correct terminology for placing a layer in a different position within the middle of the layer stack, so I tried to put all possibilities into the Subject Line. Basically what I am trying to ask is: Does anyone know of a way to reposition a layer other than manually dragging the layer up or down in the Layers palette or using the Arrange command to move a layer all the way to the top or bottom?
For instance, if you have 500 layers, and you want to reposition what I'll call Layer #350 and make it Layer #125, it takes forever dragging the layer down the stack until you run out of room in the Layers palette, using the vertical scroll bar to display more layers, dragging the layer again (and hopefully not dragging so far that it jumps back up to where it was before and where you now have a hard time finding it again), scrolling some more, dragging some more; well, you get the picture. Actually, I do this a lot, and I always wish for a Cut and Paste option. Since you can have something like 8000 layers if you have tons of memory to handle that many layers, moving a layer from the top to somewhere in the middle of 7999 other layers would be an astronomical undertaking if it has to be done by dragging alone.
Any suggestion for a quicker or more elegant way of repositioning layers within the Layers palette would be greatly appreciated.

Chuck - I agree, the A1 really feels good to hold, even though, with an attached zoom lens, it's pretty hefty. Sure not going to put it in your shirt pocket! But I love the bright LED readout and, of course, the WYSIWYG through-the-lens focusing. I never owned a flash for this camera, but photos taken inside with available light were often quite beautiful. And at least I could always see what it was I was trying to photograph no matter how bright the day :)
Malcolm - I've never taken any slides. Certainly is a thought since my scanner is supposed to work with them.
Barbara - Thanks for the pBase tip. I followed your suggestion and searched on "Macros." Of course, I liked photos taken with the Nikon D1x and Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel, but I didn't care for the prices :). However, the Canon PowerShot Pro Series S3 IS 6MP also had some very nice user-provided macro photos on Amazon, the user reviews were highly complimentary, and I saw it priced between $350 and $400. I just got through buying a $400 printer, though, so I'll need to wait a bit before thinking about giving digital photography another shot.
Byron - Following your suggestion to give Butch's instructions another try, I did some more experimenting with Control+Clicking the Layer after Ctrl+A. I created some simple shapes with hard edges and simplified them; and, yes, with those objects, the paste was perfectly matched! I tried it again with the more complicated object I had been experimenting with earlier (a Challenge lion to which I had added a shadow), but that one didn't paste back to the exact same spot. I think the softer edges is what makes the difference. Still, I will keep this technique in mind when I need to move an object with hard edges or when moving an object that is easily moved or doesn't need precise pasting because it's really a fast technique. Thanks again, Byron and Butch, for this great solution!
Juergen -- And I tried out your suggestion of putting a large dot in both the top left corner and the bottom right corner of my complicated lion object layer, and the paste of my lion was right on!! Swiped off the dots with the eraser and it looked perfect :) Thanks so much for this great workaround!
Rita -- And last, but definitely not least, I followed your instructions to create a Duplicate Layer of my lion object layer, clicked on the layer in my original file that would follow my pasted object, and then dragged the duplicate layer from the Layer palette back into the original file. It pasted back in perfectly!! Thanks for adding your equally great workaround :)
TO ALL: Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions, comments, and participation in this topic. I am so pleased that I learned scores of new things and ended up with three great solutions to a problem I had been struggling with for a very long time!! You're a great bunch of people for taking the time to help me out :)

  • Photoshop CS6 program error saving layered files

I recently updated my adobe software and I am still getting issues with saving layered files. I keep gettting program error - only occasionally. Sometimes saving to my desktop works and other times it doesnt. Other coworkers are experiencing same thing ever since they updated. It happens when working on a layered file for any length of time and need to save it out as a layered photoshop file. We are forced to flatten and save as a tif and loose our layers. I think it has something to do with background task but not sure...

Drag the file to your desktop, open the file there, do your edits, save, and then drag back.

  • How to automatically open csv files in Excel on imac

I am migrating back from Google Chrome to firefox and would like to have the browser automatically open csv files to Excel on my mac desktop. The step to have them saved in the download folder and then go in an open it in Excel adds an unnecessary action. In the earlier versions of Firefox on my windows machine this worked as desired. Any help will be appreciated.

The Yahoo Finance server sends the file with the ''Content-Type: application/octet-stream'' header. This is a generic MIME type that doesn't describe the type of file. Therefore you will always see a download prompt, regardless of your download preferences.
    * [https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Web/Security/Securing_your_site/Configuring_server_MIME_types What are MIME types? | MDN]
To get around this issue, install the Force Content-Type add-on.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/force-content-type/
In the Add-ons Manager, Extensions category, click the Options button next to Force Content-Type. Create two rules as follows:
    * URL: '''(.csv)$''' Old Content-Type: '''text/plain''' New Content-Type: '''text/csv'''
    * URL: '''(.csv)$''' Old Content-Type: '''application/octet-stream''' New Content-Type: '''text/csv'''
You should then be able to select what you want to do with CSV files (i.e. open them directly rather than save), and check the "Do this automatically…" option.
    You're welcome.

  • When trying to export data from a program we use, it does not automatically recognize the file format as .xml. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem?

I have tried to uninstall verion 3.6 and reinstall. Also, I re-imaged the workstation, but it still does not work. The OS is Windows 7 32-bit. This same process works automatically on an XP workstation. In fact, the machine I re-imaged was an XP box, but it did not work on this particular machine. Hence, the reason for the new image.

I am exporting the file from TxEIS (in the Firefox web browser) and it does not download properly. Acccording to Firefox documentation, it is supposed to automatically recognize the file extension. I have not experienced this on any other machine within our environment. Other users are performing this same process with no problems. The browers settings are exactly the same as the machines that are working right.

  • JSF error message: Automatic prompting for file download

This is a weird problem. I have a JSF application wherin I popup a new window on a submit button.
The window opens a test.jsf page that redirects the output to a servlet1.
Servlet then based on some parameters does a sendRedirectI() to different servlets out of context.
Now the issue is that when the output is redirected to out of context servlet, that returns a file download.
If in IE browser, if one does not do a setting of "Automatic prompting for file download", this window that I had opened on submit buttton vanishes in a jiffy. If the IE setting is done, it shows the file download correctly.
I would want to show the user some kind of message by which he/she understands that this IE setting has to be done.
    I have tried several ways:
    1. Javascript: window.onbeforeunload on the test.jsf so that when the window unloads i can show some message. But since test.jsf forwards to servlet1, the html page generated does not show my script.
    2. I also tried checking if some windows registry can help me understand the setting.
    3. I tried writing in response object the javascript and then redirecting it to servlet out of context. But I guess sendRedirect() does a new request, so this did not help.
Can anyone help? I am not sure if I am able to explain my problem correctly.
    Yani

Here is the result.I used your code and it worked fine with IE setting Enabled. But when I tried to access the download servlet after opening a new window, it doesnt download the file.

  • Camera Raw edits are permanent in layered file, therefore "destructive"

I use scanned 35mm TIFF files and DNG digital files, converted from Nikon NEF files. I edit in Photoshop CS3. I use adjustment layers in Photoshop to retain the ability to revise as needed (the "nondestructive" route). To date I have used Camera Raw sparingly due to the fact that I cannot effectively change those edits once the file is converted to a layered PSD file. I say "effectively" because I guess it would be possible to reconstruct the file by editing the original DNG file containing the Camera Raw edits and add the layers added in Photoshop (some of the layers would probably not transfer effectively, e.g. spotting layers). However I do not think that that is a viable procedure.
Much is made of the nondestructive nature of Camera Raw edits. However, this appears to me to be illusory since one cannot open the layered file in Camera Raw. Among other books I have read the Fraser/Schewe books on Camera Raw and sharpening. The advice contained in those books are, in part, directly contradictory, i.e. they advise (1) to make all possible edits in Camera Raw since the edits are "nondestructive" and essential to obtaining the best quality file; and (2) always doing sharpening, except for any capture sharpening done in Camera Raw, on a sharpening layer. Well, one cannot accomplish both of these objectives. Once the file is converted to the layered PSD file say goodbye to the opportunity to change the Camera Raw edits.
So my questions are: 1. Have I missed something? Am I wrong about the inability to change the Camera Raw edits after the file is made into a layered PSD? If there is an effective way to do this, how do I do it? 2. What is your workflow for preserving the ability to undo your edits and how do you balance the workflow between Camera Raw and Photoshop? I find it a bit frustrating that the experts write these books, advocating the glory of nondestructive edits but fail to even comment on the fact that that ability disappears the moment a layer is added in Photoshop (an editing step they also insist is absolutely essential).
I will appreciate any assistance you are able to offer.

    Please read carefully:
    1.  NOTHING is "destructive" if you do not save over your original file.
    2.  Bearing in mind #1 above, there is no evil in developing input data into an image in which pixel values are set per the controls in Camera Raw.  That's what Camera Raw does best!
Learning from others is great, but keep in mind sometimes people have an agenda in what they teach and "rules of thumb" like "avoid destructive edits like the plague" are developed to start you off in the right direction.  I'm just saying use your common sense as well.

    Hello all,
if you have not yet solved this on your own, here is my solution: use a format type that has 60000 lines per page for your spool output device.
It all depends on the format type that was used for creating the spool output.
By default (in our system), we have 65 lines per page. And after each page the column headings of the ALV will appear.
    What i did:
create a new format type via transaction SPAD->full administration->device types->format types (copy an existing one)
change"Number of Rows" to 60000 or something applicable
edit the device type of your output device (e.g. LOCL) to contain the newly created format type (via SPAD; Button "Formats" in device type maintenance).
That's it! Be sure to use this format type for your output device in the "Background Print Parameters" window (-> Button "Properties").
    Regards
    Daniel Klein
All other parameters you discussed before didn't do it. All ALV-Settings will be overwritten by the output device settings and its print properties.

  • Sharepoint 2010 is automatically downloading Office2010 files to local machine's Recent Documents, instead of opening from library, off an emailed link.

    Hi-
Please forgive me if this exact question has been asked already (if so I'm not finding it via Google or these forums), but one of my users can't seem to edit documents IN libraries, via links emailed to him.  He clicks on the link and the
file auto-downloads with no Read-only/Edit option pop-up, and he can edit it (without getting the annoying yellow "this is read only from the server, click to edit document" bar up top either), but naturally his changes to these documents
are only being saved on his local machine and not making it back to the library....  Our IT dept gave him a Save As workaround (that, it appears, would make a SECOND file in the library, which is not going to work for our processes), but nobody
else is having this issue....  I'm thinking this is a simple settings change someplace in Sharepoint 2010 or Word 2010 (we have Windows 7), or maybe IE, or it's possible his User profile in our network needs some kind of adjustment...  anyway,
    any/all help appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hi,
    1. For automatically download the files, please check the office software settings. for word file, please open local word > file > options > save > save checked-out files to: > select "the office document cache"
    2. site actions > site settings > site administration > search and offline availablity to change the settings.
    3. Please compare the add-ons from this user's IE setting and the working fine IE setting.

after an automatic update my files are gone. How do I get them back?
Working on a Mac Book Pro OS 10.7.3
Missing files: pictures, photos, documents (written files)
All in the map documents; aliases on the desktop
The desktop was rebuild too, not the same anymore and all aliases gone.

I suspect you didn't back up your data before the update - that would have been your first insurance. At the least, you could have saved your most important documents. I realize you probably don't want to hear that, but it's a good way to avoid problems.
It would be great to get a few answers:
    1. What did you update? Was it a software update, a firmware update, or something else?
    2. Do you use external drives? Or is it just the HD on your MBP?
    3. Why did you "rebuild" the desktop?
Provide as much detail as you can.
